X264 package speed boost

x264 allows you to slightly improve (couple percent) its speed by dynamically optimizing at compile-time. Build using "make fprofiled VIDS="../foo/bar.yuv" to make use of this. Only a few hundred frames are necessary, but the source needs to be raw video or piped out as raw video from mplayer or ffmpeg. In the former case it might be wise to use "normal (gzip, etc.)" compression on the source, since raw video gets very big very fast.
I don't know how this might make its way into Arch packages, but it would definitely be nice A few percent is major when you consider multi-day encodes.
A good source for short, uncompressed videos is http://media.xiph.org/

Doom9, home of x264 devs, is where I get info from I was just building x264 with patches as I usually do, checked out the Arch PKGBUILD, and was surprised to see that the profiling was not enabled. x264 does indeed have a ridiculous amount of handwritten asm, but fprofiling can help - I'd say about 2% for a fairly recent CPU.
Considering a 2 hour video, at 23.976fps (film), if the encoding goes at 30fps (ballpark for a decent CPU with fairly high settings), the 2% boost nets us ~2 minutes faster of an encode.
So, yeah, not too much. I personally say why not, since it only needs to be done during the compile, which is short
Implementations could be:
1.) Add a YUV video to the sources for the PKGBUILD (I like Foreman: http://media.xiph.org/video/derf/y4m/foreman_cif.y4m). Probably mirroring it would be a good idea.
2.) First compress the YUV with bzip2, gzip, or LZMA, and first unzip it in the PKGBUILD. This is probably a better idea, as YUV uncompressed video gets real ridiculous, real fast.
3.) Use a lossless (or lossy) compressor, and add mplayer or ffmpeg to pipe the raw video in to x264 via a named pipe. Probably not nice.

  • Kernel 2.6.32 will boost x264 encode speed BIG TIME for multicore CPUs

It's due to a tweaked scheduler in the 2.6.32 codebase.  I measured a 53 % speed boost comparing 2.6.31-5 to 2.6.32-rc6 on my quad.  See my post over at the handbrake forum here for details and see this page too.
The test encode was a 60 fps 720p (1280x720) encode using the "High Profile" on handbrake snapshot 2907 (which you can get in the AUR here):
    Arch x86_64 (kernel 2.6.31.5): avg 15.99 fps
    Arch x86_64 (kernel 2.6.32-rc6): avg 24.45 fps
Linux (kernel 2.6.31-bfs): avg 24.49 fps
Win XP 64-bit edition: avg 20.41 fps
Linux is 53 % faster w/ the new kernel and 20 % faster than Windows. Can't wait for 2.6.32 to go final!

you'll need to go back to the mainline CPU sched (CFS)
But this bug was noticed in the first place because BFS kicked CFS's ass with x264, so sticking with BFS is fine
@tomd123: It's a general improvement in the scheduler, which should translate to other workloads as well.  x264 got a huge boost, not everything will get such a huge increase in speed.

  • Upload Speed Boost Option for Cable Plans

There have been multiple posts from other Bigpond users requesting higher upload speeds on their cable services on the Whirlpool Technology forums. It seems today with families sharing even a Telstra Ultimate Cable connection at home, doing various tasks such as uploading photographs and videos to social media, performing online backups, using cloud services, online gaming, video conferencing or any other upload intensive applications, it can quickly make an Ultimate cable connection quickly feel no so ultimate with only a 2.4 megabit upload speed. I'm suggesting the thought of providing another speed boost option for those with Telstra Cable services similar to what is already in place but with a higher upload speed (to align with Velocity?) and higher cost per month. This gives your customers the added flexibility of being able to pay for the option should it be needed and can be marketed to the customers appropriately also during signup. From a technological point of view the DOCSIS 3.0 technology used by the Telstra Cable network is more than capable of being up to the task of catering for higher upload speeds. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS I hope this suggestion is of use as I can see clear profitability gains for Telstra. Just by the introduction of a simple new product you will be able to keep more current customers happy and attract more in the process.

+1 to increase it by any amount. But I would be happy to pay an extra $10 per month for at least 10Mbps up. Purely for the benefits of online cloud storage to backup photos etc - a process that is painfully slow with most of the U.S. based cloud backup solutions. I can understand that part of the reasoning might be to prevent users from hosting web or ftp sites and the like, but without a static IP - it is not that feasible anyway (yes I know you can have dynamic dns services etc. but Telstra wouldnt be making it any easier without static IP's). For example: August 21, 2014 - Cogeco Cable Canada Enhances its High Speed Internet Service : The Turbo 20, and Ultimate 55 High Speed Internet package upgrade includes an upload speed increase from up to 2 Mbps to up to 10 Mbps, at no additional cost. The newly launched Ultimate 120 High Speed Internet package offers download speeds of up to 120 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10 Mbps, as well as a monthly data transfer capacity of 425 GB. (Just do a search and replace on a few words in the above paragraph and feel the potential happiness!) I'd like to hear a response from Telstra.

  • Does 802.11n give a speed boost on the iPad?

I did some testing to see if I'd get a speed boost by enabling 802.11n on my Belkin F5D8233-4 router, which supports 802.11n draft specification. I have Verizon FIOS with 25Mbps download/upload. I also have the Verizon router, which only supports 802.11b/g, and I can switch which router I'm connected to in order to compare speeds of 802.11n and 802.11g. All tests were done less than 3 feet from either router.
Bottom line is that the iPad doesn't get any speed boost by using 802.11n, at least by using speedtest.net to do the testing.
The test I used was with the speedtest app for the iPhone. I made the Belkin a pure 11n router, and ran that app from the iPad. So the connection had to be 802.11n. Then I connected the iPad to my Verizon router, which had to be 802.11g, and saw virtually no difference.
I did the same test with a Windows laptop from my job that supports 802.11n. It connected locally to the Belkin router at 72Mbps according to the internal utility. Testing using speedtest.net indicated that using the 802.11n connection on the Belkin was 50% faster than the 802.11g connection on the Verizon router. (About 30Mbps for Belkin/802.11n compared to 20Mbps for Verizon/802.11g for downloads).
But with the iPad, doing the same test (switching from Belkin router to Verizon router), the speed didn't change. It actually seemed a little slower when I was on 802.11n, but repeated tests showed some variability, and the average was about 19Mbps.
I realize that the overall speed for the iPad when I'm in my house will get throttled by the FIOS connection max of 25Mbps (although it's interesting that with my MacMini, and the Windows laptop, when connected via 100baseT, I get 30Mbps from FIOS when they promise 25Mbps!). But I can't get the good results from the iPad using 802.11n that I see with the Windows laptop. I'd like to try a local speedtest using the local LAN. I installed Speedtest MINI on the MacMini, enabling the Mac as a server, and the Windows laptop did 72Mbps on the local LAN. But Speedtest MINI requires Flash in the browser, so I can't do that test on the iPad. And the Speedtest app for iPhone doesn't let you pick a local URL for the server.
So I'm now pretty sure that 802.11n isn't really working right on the iPad with my Belkin router, in terms of delivering increased performance. I've read other posts where people have looked at the transmit rate from the router side, but I really wish I could look at the transmit rate from the iPad (like I do in Mac OS X, or in Windows) to verify.
To be sure, I'd like to run a speedtest on my local LAN from the iPad. Has anyone been able to actually do some kind of test that verifies the speed of an iPad connection on a local LAN, and does that verification from the iPad, and not the router?
And finally, has anyone ever done a test that verifies that 802.11n from an iPad delivers a speed boost compared to 802.11g? Are there specific requirements on the router side that need to be satisfied so that the iPad gets a boost? I've read elsewhere where someone said that you only get the boost if using Apple's Airport Extreme as the router (so that you can't really get 802.11n on a non-Apple router), and I think I saw someone say that the router has to support communication over 5.0Ghz for the iPad to be fast on 802.11n. Has Apple ever said what are the real requirements for the iPad to be faster on 802.11n versus 802.11g?

To the contrary, my experience is that the "G" standard on WiFi provided MUCH faster speeds than the "N" standard on Wi-Fi.  It makes no sense, I know, but it is true.
I was having horribly slow Wi-Fi speeds on my iPad2, despite a fast cable modem connection and a "N" generation Linksys wireless router (maybe 2-3 yrs old).  Was achieving speeds of only 1.3Mbs -- slow enough that you couldn't watch YouTube videos.  From hunting around on the web, I came across the suggestion to manually set the Wi-Fi router to the "G" standard (ie downgrade it from the faster "N" standard).  Remarkably, I did it and it worked like a charm.  I now get Wi-Fi speeds of about 12 or 13 Mbs, or 10x what I was getting before.  It is an easy fix.  And also I think the "G" standard is capable of 50Mbs so even though it is a slower and older standard, it is still way faster than anything you are likely to achieve as a home user.   I think there is some glitch or oddity in the iPad and iPad2 which can cause it to perform very poorly with older "N" standard WiFi routers.  New ones don't seem to have a problem.

  • Just upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard on a 2007 Macbook. MASSIVE speed boost. Why?

I'm just wondering, is there any way to tell exactly why a mac was slow before a system upgrade but fine again afterwards?
My old Tiger OS had got to the stage where Safari would bounce about 10 times before opening, remain unresponsive for minutes after that, when clicking the spotlight icon in the corner would produce a spinning beachball for ages, when the entire machine had turned into an incredibly slow piece of junk.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard last night and it's as fast pretty much as it was when I first bought it. Have 2GB of RAM, 30GB free disk space, etc.
What caused the massive speed boost? Should I now assume that there was some sort of mismatch in my old OS installation or something, some out of date extensions or files which were causing it to slow down?
I know a new OS brings a speed boost, but this is so dramatic I can only assume some sort of gigantic error was fixed when I upgraded. Any way to know exactly what?

OSX directory structures get a little wierd over time (thus the "Repair Disk" item under DU which many people need for very minor fixes).
Also some of your system files may have been living on hard disk sectors that were questionable, and the upgrade process forced enough of a re-evaluation of disk sectors to find good ones.
Either way, I would just say "Thank you, Santa", and move on.
<Following OSXFreak> ... Or maybe I know nothing about Tiger ... which is very likely.

  • Disable Speed Booster?

I have a new PDA (Dell Axim X-51) that I got as a gift and I can't get it to connect to my wireless network.  The network uses a WRT54GS router/AP and it works fine with my other computers (one laptop, one desktop).
One suggestion I received was to turn off the speed boost feature because apparently, the PDA will not connect while it is enaabled.  I saw one message here that said that the Speed Boost feature on the router can not be disabled (apparently correct since I haven't seen any such control).
Has anyone had such a problem and if so how did they get around it?
    TIA,
    Cec Britton

    Hi
I dont think that there should be any problem when you are trying to connect your PDA to the WRT54GS Router.
    1. Just make sure you have the right security settings and ssid set on the router should be the same on you PDA. . .
    2. If you are using any type of security such as WEP 64bits or 128bits,should be set the same(Hexadecimal) on the PDA. . .
I have a PDA and i have tried connecting the PDA to WRT54G,WRT54GS and WRT300N And believe me i has truely worked perfectly. . .
Try That And Let Me Know If Any Updates. . .

  • Ultimate Speed Boost in My Account

Hi there, Today when I looked in My Account there was a message/ad from Telstra that isn't usually there: Ultimate Speed Boost A Speed Boost gives you access to the maximum Telstra Broadband speeds available at your home. I checked my personal records and found that I should already be on Cable Ultimate. speedtest.net gives me 39.7Mbps down and 2.49Mbps up speeds to the nearest Telstra server. I have previously downloaded at speeds exceeding 10M_bytes_/sec, but rarely see that any more. I can't find anywhere in My Account or on my invoices something that definitively says what speed connection I am on. Where can I find this? Is the speed boost message global or only for customers not on Ultimate Cable? EDIT Ok, a bit more poking around and I found a whole alternate version of My Account. In there it says I am on "Connection: Ultimate - Cable". Under a section called "Add-Ons" it says "Super Fast Speed Boost Ultimate Speed Boost Status: InactiveA Speed Boost gives you access to the maximum Telstra Broadband speeds available at your home." 1. What is the theoretical maximum speed that Ultimate Cable can deliver?2. What are real world average speeds on Ultimate Cable?3. Is this speed boost really a thing if you are on Ultimate Cable? Like I said before, I have downloaded around 10Mbyte/sec in the past but not for a while now.4. What does Telstra gaurantee about this speed boost? My Ultimate connection has a grey area of about 5Mbytes/sec in its speed from what I've experienced. If I opt in for it, should I be expecting speed exceeding 10Mbyte/sec? I want the fastest connection I can get but I don't want to be taken for a ride with speed boosts that may not really exist.

Good morning. The message was not in My Account this morning.Your download speed is low for Ultimate/Speed Boost...but upload good. You may consider having Telstra technical support run some tests on your cable. It may be that there is moisture/corrosion/a poor connection in your box outside or the street pit ???? If you are in Victoria, this is their speed testing site link         http://vic.speedtest.bigpond.net.au/Hope this helps you....Cheers  Professor Phone I'm not a Telstra employee.  I have been a mobile subscriber since 1963.If my advice has been helpful, a Kudo  "tick"    would be most appreciated. If my advice has solved your problem, please also mark it as a Solution.

  • WRT54GS v.6 Speed Booster issue

I can not seem to find the option to enable Speed Booster in the router options for my WRT54GS router. I had some trouble finding the option for my WMP54GS card as it was deep in the driver properties. When I did locate it, Speed Booster was turned off by default. So I'm wondering if there is some option for the router that is set to off by default as well.
    Thanks in advance

As such there is no option to turn on or turn off the speedbooster on the router. It is always on by default.

  • Are we going to get a speed boost in the Spring?

According to PC Pro ( http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/broadband/372577/bt-to-offer-300mbits-sec-fibre-on-demand ) we are going to be offered: "BT is set to boost the maximum download speed of FTTC lines from 40Mbits/sec to 80Mbits/sec this spring".  Can anyone verify this data?

    Spenty wrote:
Be very surprised if they charge extra, hardly anyone will pay extra if it's £5+ more a month. So they'd only make more from new customers.
Who can tell till there is an announcement, but this was spotted on ISpreview:
In addition Plusnet has also been taking part in BT's trial of 80Mbps (20Mbps uploads) FTTC (Fibre-to-the-Cabinet) technology, which will soon be made available to almost 40% of the UK. It's understood that PlusNet's technical trial has been running for two weeks and will be opened up to existing customers "from early February".
Dave Tomlinson, Plusnet's Product Team, said:
"We have so far seen maximum sync speeds of 80Mbps down and 20Mbps up with speedtest results coming in at a maximum of around 76Mbps. As with other DSL technologies the up to 80Mbps speeds are distance dependant, although it is distance between property and cabinet that counts rather than property and exchange. As such we have seen sync speeds vary from the mid 50s all the way up to the full 80Mbps, with a mean speed of about 68Mbps."
Those taking part in PlusNet's January FTTC trial will receive the faster service for no additional charge until 30th April. This suggests that Plusnet might be planning to offer a separate 80Mbps service at extra cost.
So it looks like part of the BT empire might be looking at charging a premium for it.

  • Which package/speed?

My line has today changed on the BT wholesale tracker to:
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 37.7Mbps and upstream line speed of 6.1Mbps.
So looks like I can now go ahead and get it! The question is over the packages - up to 38Mb or 76Mb. I dont know if the stated speed of 37.7 is for the normal inifinity and if I went for Infinity 2 it would go up, or is 37.7 the max I can get so there is no point going for the Infinity 2 option? or does it mean Infinity 2 isnt yet available in this area?? confused!
Obviously I dont want to opt for a faster and more expensive package if I cannot actually get the higher speeds.

the difference between the two packages is not only speed but also about the amount of data you can download per month option 1 40 GB per month option 2 unlimited data the speed is an estimate and may be above or below that figure you will not know until the service is activated

  • When is verizon going to upgrade fios speed tiers?

I'd like to upgrade my speed from 35/35 plan.  Does anyone know when Verizon is going to upgrade the fios speed tiers?  Compared to cable co docsis 3, fios is starting to look and feel slow.

Verizon does have higher speed tiers if you really want the additional speed. Their 50M/20M package is certainly feeling dated since it hasn't been updated in... 5 years? but they did introduce a 150M/75M package for a good deal of money a month, as fast but unfortunate as that might be. Now if what you're asking for is a speed boost on all the tiers, Verizon tends to boost the speeds every year to a year and a half. Lately these boosts have been silent. The 35Mbps tier, for example tends to clock in 43 or so Megabits on the download and about 38Mbps on the upload. Since you have that package, I'd check to see what you're really getting.
I would like to see 50Mbps/20Mbps go to 100Mbps/100Mbps sometime in the near future, though. 150Mbps/75Mbps goes to 250Mbps/250Mbps. That'd be very nice to see and by no means will DOCSIS 3.0 get that kind of upload any time soon.
As it currently stands, the highest DOCSIS 3.0 package available to me is 50Mbps/5Mbps. FiOS's basic package in my area still beats that plan in upload by an additional megabit. The legacy 50Mbps/20Mbps speed smokes that cable connection in upload, and is also $20 cheaper a month believe it or not.
Here, the packages run as follows:
1Mbps/384kbps DSL > Runs at 1Mbps/340kbps. Comparative Cable package: 768kbps/128kbps. ($25 for DSL and Cable).
    3Mbps/1Mbps > Runs at 5Mbps/2Mbps. Comparative Cable Package: 10Mbps/1Mbps ($30/m FiOS, $40/m Cable).
    15Mbps/5Mbps > Runs at 20Mbps/6Mbps. Comparative cable package: 15Mbps/2Mbps (~$50/m for Cable, $45 FiOS).
25Mbps/25Mbps > Runs at 30Mbps/26Mbps. Comparative Cable package: 30Mbps/5Mbps ($60/m for Cable, $55/m for FiOS).
35Mbps/35Mbps > Runs at 43Mbps/38Mbps, available if you have Phone or TV with FiOS. Comparative Cable package: 50Mbps/5Mbps (Same price as the 25Mbps for FiOS, Cable is $100/m).
    50Mbps/20Mbps > Runs at 51Mbps/20Mbps. Comparative Cable package: 50Mbps/5Mbps. ($80/m FiOS, $100/m Cable)
    150Mbps/35Mbps > Runs at 155Mbps/75+Mbps. Comparative Cable package: 50Mbps/5Mbps ($200/m FiOS, $100/m Cable).
So I guess it really depends on what market you live in, I guess. A Comcast or Cablevision market i'm sure would have higher speed Cable packages, and in the case of Cablevision, ones that cost less and that would be where I'd expect Verizon to boost speeds. Other than that, FiOS does have the overall edge in my area regardless, as long as you don't cheap out and go with the unadvertised packages.

  • Memory speed and graphic card slot

    Hi,
I have just built a system with a P67A-GD65 B3 board, everything works fine, but while double-checking on the system's specs and performances I came across two weird issues:
    - I have 2 x G-Skill F3-17000CL7-2GBXHD RAM sticks at 2133MHz, I have enabled XMP in the BIOS (with leaving all other settings in automatic mode) and the BIOS indicates the RAM is running at 2133MHz, 7-10-7-27, however, when I run the MSI Control Center (latest version of the app) it says on the home screen of this app that my RAM is detected as "DDR3-1600 (800MHz)" in the speed field. I also ran CPU-Z and it says there that my DRAM frequency is 1064.4 MHz (the FSB:DRAM value is "1:8"), with the 7-10-7-27 timings values. Which one should I believe? The WEI gives a score of 7.9 for my memory which is ok, and I am not running in any performance issue nor I am looking to do any overclocking, but I just want to make sure that I am making the best out of my money and that I am using the RAM as it is supposed to be used... Can someone shed some light here?
    - I have installed my graphic car on the slot that is the furthest possible from the CPU as I believe they both generate quite some heat and so they should be as far away as possible from eachother. In CPU-Z I have a link width for the graphic interface of "x8" with max supported of "x16". Is this something that is related to the slot and should I move the card to the slot closer to the CPU? Or is this something else? Is there a setting in the BIOS maybe that can address this?
    Thanks!

Both are correct information. The detected '1600MHz' is actually the factory stock speed from the IC chip of the RAMs. The readings of "1064.4MHz" is the running speed that the RAM is currently on so for DDR calculation, you have to multiple 1064.4MHz by 2 to get 2133MHz.
The reasons for 2 readings to be detected is due to your RAM being factory overclocked by manufacturer before it went on the retail shelves, which is very common. Most or any RAMs that you see with speed above 1600MHz are generally overclocked by manufacturer using 1600MHz RAMs for speed boost.
The graphics card slot will still runs at x16 with your card.
