Xcode main.c File type is Puzzling
Howdy,
In working through a C kinda book, I created several C projects. They run fine via Xcode and terminal using clang works fine on the main.c file. However while in terminal I ran the file command on the main.c file and got:
file main.c
main.c: ASCII C++ program text
I was expecting something along the lines of ". . . C program text".
So I tried:
$ clang++ main.c
clang: warning: treating 'c' input as 'c++' when in C++ mode, this behavior is deprecated
Interesting note, if I go into the project folder, duplicate and rename the copy to main.cpp, using clang++ works fine; no warning message
So my question --- is Xcode really creating a c++ file even when C was selected when making the project? Just curious.
In the first case, the "file" command is an old UNIX tool that uses definitions in /usr/share/file/magic. It doesn't have any other meaning for the system. See the magic directory and/or "man file" for more information. In this case, it is confused by the "//" which it thinks indicate C++.
In the second case, you are simply trying to compile a C file with the C++ compiler. Clang works just like GCC in this respect. When you add the "++", it adds all of the necessary flags and include directories for C++. Even if you wrote straight up C code, there are some subtle differences between C and C++.

File Type Support in the Future?
Hi all,
I'm really tempted to buy either the 16GB or 32GB iPod Touch. I currently have a creative Zen Touch 20GB, so the touch will be my first iPod.
Basically, the one thing I'm not too impressed with atm is the low level of file type support. Is it likely that in the future, the iPod Touch will accept AVIs, WMVs and WMAs etc through a firmware update?
Thanks!PlaneHazza wrote:

Hi!
I want the XCode to apply C syntax coloring to the .nc files, which are not recognized by it. There are settings to change coloring schemes for known types, but i couldn't find anything to add a new file type. Each time I open a .nc file, I need to select the syntax coloring scheme manually..
Anybody has any idea on where to find settings for that?
best,
Onur.I ran into this same problem just yesterday and I was glad to even find out that I could temporarily fix the problem by relaunching the finder. It also happened to my while I was renaming files. It allowed it for a few files and then all of a sudden, nothing. I couldn't type, or do any key commands with anything related to the finder, although all of my application files were fine.
I am clueless as to how to permanently fix this problem, although i am thankful to read on how to relaunch the finder to fix it for a bit.
I'll keep checking back to see if some guru stops by with the answer.
Thanks for posting! -
XCode SVN not comparing some file types on commit
Hello,
I'm new to XCode development. I've been looking around for SVN clients and there are a few options, but I know that XCode has a SVN client so I wanted to give it a try.
The thing is that, when commiting, the file diff embedded on the SVN client does not compares certain file types on the Version Editor pane, just shows the file icon on left-right compare panes, instead of the actual text comparisson.
I tried using the FileMerge XCode tool to compare two files with the same extension and it works, it shows me the left-right files on each pane. But when I use the SVN client... they are not shown, only the icon.
Any guess?anybody help?

Turning Auto Creation of Main.cpp file in Xcode 4
I am taking a C++ class. I'm brand new to programing but Xcode is bugging me. It is automatically creating the main.cpp file in my projects for C++. I need to turn this function off so that I can create the file from stratch myself. In the future this feature will come in handy for spead but I'm new and need to learn to how to create this file and code it from memory. How do I stop Xcode from creating the main.cpp file automatically when I start a new project?
The Developer Forum is here https://discussions.apple.com/community/developer_forums
Might be best to ask there.

I was in the process of reorganising my hard drives so I could RAID them however I managed to corrupt one drive and had to format it which meant I lost all my Logic Files and some other files. I managed to save a lot of files (mainly video files) before I had to format the drive but I need a Data Recovery service that will not alter anything on the hard drive and will put all the formatted files (regardless of the type) back for me so I can get the rest of the ones I need.
Thanks in advance. What about folders and such?
No. FS doesn't reconstruct folders. However, Data Rescue does, depending on how you use it. About the only thing in Data Rescue a Quick Scan ever seems to show you are files that are already live.
So that leaves you with a Deep Scan, or a Deleted Files scan. The first pass of a Deep Scan will attempt to retrieve folders and files, along with their original names. The second pass only looks for file patterns. Like recognizing a Photoshop .psd file. It will recover it, but give it a nonsense name. A Deleted Files scan only results in nonsense names of recognized file types; no folders.
What were you using File Salvage on? A hard drive?
Yes, though you can use it on a flash drive, or any other mounted drive.
At the moment it is estimating 289 hours remaining on a 1TB drive. Can it not go faster?
No, both of the software mentioned are slower than molasses in January. When you delete anything in Windows, its file table entry simply tagged as deleted. So to unerase them, the tag is removed. That's why it works to quickly and easily (assuming you haven't already overwritten the data to be recovered).
In OS X though, the whole idea of the underlying UNIX structure is all about security. It's not supposed to be easy to retrieve deleted items. When you delete items, their file table entries are erased. So the only way to find deleted items is to scour the entire drive for BOF (Beginning Of File) markers that don't have a matching starting block to anything that is in the file table.
Another question, half the drive was empty. Will it fly over that empty space or will it sieve through it incase there was some files stored on it?
If you use the Expert mode is FS, you can choose to do that: -
Please help! I've been wrestling with this all day! Everytime I come to a clip on the timeline that has been adjusted via speed/duration the program crashes. I've already deleted the preference files for all Adobe products. Any suggestions?

Dreamweaver setting wrong file type and creator codes
First of all, I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2 on an Intel-based
Mac, with Dreamweaver CS3 9.0 build 3481.
I have a site defined where I connect to my web server via
FTP. On my server, I just upgraded my forum software to PHPBB 3.0,
which created a new /forums/ directory. My plan is to use
Dreamweaver to download that new /forums/ directory to my local
site where I can edit the files. Inside the forums folder are
several types of files, like ".php" files, ".htm" files, ".gif"
files, etc.
So, upon downloading the /forums/ folder to my local machine
by dragging and dropping it (in Dreamweaver) from the remote site
to the local site, I noticed that Dreamweaver insists on setting
HFS file type and creator codes for files it recognizes, based on
the filename extension.
I've connected to the same server using the Finder and
Transmit, and copied the remote /forums/ folder over to my local
machine. Neither of those copies have files with file types and
creator codes set, meaning they aren't actually set on the remote
files and that this is indeed something Dreamweaver is doing on the
fly as it downloads the files.
I'm wondering if there's any way possible to disable this
behavior, and just download the files like they are on the server?
(File extension only). To make matters worse, on my Intel-based
Mac, it's not even setting the proper codes, as you can see in the
following image:
http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/images/dreamweaver.png
Notice for the ".php" document, it's attempting to set a file
type of 'TEXT' and a creator code of 'DmWr' (DreamWeaver's creator
code), but because the Dreamweaver developers didn't bother to take
into account the byte-ordering differences between PowerPC Macs and
Intel Macs, the codes are written in reverse: 'TEXT' becomes
'TXET', and 'DmWr' becomes 'rWmD'. (If you're going to use
low-level routines such as FSSetCatalogInfo() to set the file types
and creator codes, you need to call CFSwapInt32HostToBig() on the
OSType values before doing so, to make sure they're in Big-endian
format).
Anyone know where the conversion information is stored?
Thanks in advance.....Creator codes are totally deprecated in snow leopard. as for a workaround you can use something like this.
<pre style="

Setting file type to open in WebStart Program (Opened file as parameter)
Hi --
I've created a Java program & installed in on my PC using Web Start. Now I'd like set all .sit files to automatically open in my program. My program expects a file as input, and I'd like the opened .sit file to be that parameter.
I've tested this using a batch file to run the program (instead of Web Start), and that worked fine. I'm not able to get this to work with a Web Start program, though.
I opened My Computer & went to Tools / Folder Options / File Types. I created an SIT extention, and I tried a number of things:
1. I had Web Start place a shortcut on the desktop, and then I selected that shortcut from the list in the File Types window --> I got a "TooManyArgumentsException" when I double-clicked on the .sit file.
2. I tried to set the File Types setting to http://myserver/myapp.jnlp. --> Windows recognized that this wasn't an executable & wouldn't let me save it.
3. I created a shortcut to http://myserver/myapp.jnlp and pointed the File Types setting to that. --> Windows wouldn't let me save that.
4. I clicked the Advanced button on the File Types tab, and created an open action. I tried the same three things there & got the same results.
Is it possible to do what I'm trying to do (force .sit files to open in my Java Web Start program and send their filename into the program's main method as a parameter)? Does anyone have any pointers?
Thanks,
BonnieThis is a new feature in Java Web Start 1.5, and in the 1.5 version of the JNLP specification.
The <association> tag in the jnlp file can be used to ask Web Start to create the fextension/mime-type asociation for ".sit" extensions so that if you click on a ".sit" file, the system will launch "javaws -open clickedfile.sit yourapp.jnlp" see:

Server side validation for file type with cffil sent via cfmail problem
Hello;
I have a small app that I need to allow users to be able to use a form, and send me and email with a file attachment. I have it working nicely, I included file manipulation into the validation process of the form and required form fields. The problem I'm having, is this. I'm trying to create and instance where if they try and upload lets say a pdf, it throws and error: "You are trying to upload the wrong file, please try again we only accept bla bla bla" Problem is, even if I'm uploading the proper file, it's rejecting it and deleting it. Can someone help me fix this? I've tried a number of different ways and can't seem to get this to go off properly. I am posting some of the code. There is a ton, so I'm posting the main parts so you get the idea and see my variables.

File-type "Firefox Document (.htm)" images saved to the HD won't open
Images online occasionally default to file-type Firefox Document (.htm) as opposed to the usual jpg. They will not open even with firefox and display as coding.
Can you describe in more detail what happens when you try to open the saved movie? I don't know what you mean by "main menu1".
Since you saved your movie you may find it completely intact in the project's Package Contents folder. Right-click on the project icon (the one with the star on it). Select Package Contents in the drop down menu. In the Package Contents folder you should find a file named (project movie title).iMovieProj. Open that file and see if your movie is intact with all edits. If it is, duplicate it and move it to your desktop. Rename and save it as a new project. Don't otherwise mess with the Package Contents.

Can't download .GZ file - incorrect file type?
Thank you for helping me. Using the code below, I am trying to access a log file from a site (log.gz) and download it to my hard drive to expand and analyze locally. When I try to expand the file, the message says that it does not recognize the file type. I suspect that it is adding in errant bits of data. Is there some way to make it keep the data structure intact?
Thanks,
Greg

in my point of view having text as the file type, the file will be having characters that are used for Segment separators or Element separators ( like space ) in the standard EDI format message. Hence it is throwing exception in X2E mapping. It is just my point of view but not sure.

Using Photoshop Elements to edit raw. Doesn't recognize file type
I recently downloaded photoshop elements to use as my editor within Iphoto. I've set it up as the default editor in preferences, and made the appropriate change in the advanced settings within Iphoto so that it exports edits in RAW. When I attempt to edit by double clicking, Photoshop Elements gives me a msg that it can't open file because it does not recognize the file type. Does anyone know why this would be? I am using a Nikon D60. I haven't downloaded the Nikon software onto the computer (not sure if that has anything to do with it). Does photoshop elements need anything additional? Any help appreciated.
Thx
RichieRichie:
As Terence mentioned we can help with using PSE within iPHoto but why PSE doesn't recognize the D60 files is an Adobe issue. I believe there are Adobe plugins available to handle RAW files. Check the Adobe site for those. For using PSE to edit jpgs within iPhoto this may be of some help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
