Xfce4 hangs opening terminal, etc.

Hi!
I'm having a _very_ strange problem with Arch + Xfce4 + old Compaq (Intel 82810 DC-100 CGC Chipset)
I have searched a lot of forums and it seems that people are having similar problems, just the solution is missing
So, the situation is:
I got the Xfce4 up and running with i810 driver. Everything seems to work fine until I try to open the terminal emulator, the one with an icon on the default xfce panel. Screen goes "rainbow" and it totally hangs, can't kill X by ctrl+alt+bspace. So I need to reboot from ssh or power button (is there a better way, not having to reboot?)
Now, the real strangeness begins:
I try and open xfce again. Sometimes it starts ok, some other time not. Gives an error: "Fatal server error: Active ring not flushed"
or in Xorg.0.log:
"(WW) I810(0): xf86UnMapVidMem: cannot find region for [0xb3a94000,0x3000000]"
Also yesterday I noticed that as root, I can use both startx and startxfce4.
Normal user gets xfce but not plain x... :S
Vesa driver works ok, but I can't get the resolution and refresh rate high enough.
I think there might be several problems because of different error messages etc...
One thing I found was a faulty memory module, gave ~20 errors in memtest before it was even 50% finished...
Removed it, no go still.
Or is it just the direction of wind and the position of the moon

I have recently downloaded MacKeeper. It ran OK for a bit, but has recently stopped allowing Internet security updates and switching on of the internet protection options.
Asked for help at MacKeeper. Their initial advice did not work, so a very nice technician was going to remotely attempt to fix the issue.
He however needed/still needs access to Terminal, a to me unbeknown Utility feature of my MacBook pro with Mac OS X 10.6.8.
While attempting to open Terminal the following came up

Did do a diskverify permission and repair and restart.
Did check my admin settings in advanced options and have the /bin/bash.

After finally localing private/etc/shells through Go>Go to folder and replacing the empty shells with the shells~orig I have permission again to open Terminal. Thanks. Another step.

Should work but the file or folder needs to exists to access it. If you typed in /private/etc/shells and the file wasn't there there's no place to access. Certainly /private/etc was there so that would have worked.
So what will happen by inputting the lines
ls -Fvl /bin/bash
ls -Fvl /etc/shells
more /etc/shells
into Terminal?
Basically to find out what you already seemed to find out. The first command was to display owner, group, and permissions of /bin/bash and to tell me whether it still existed.
Similarly for /etc/shells.
And the last command would have just displayed what was in /etc/shells.
By the way /private/etc and /etc are the same folder.

Nautilus-open-terminal to open xfterm4 instead of xterm

I have installed in nautilus and nautilus-open-terminal in xfce4 on Arch. It opens xterm which does not have good font and appearance. How can I change the setup so that xfterm4 opens rather than xterm. I have tried arch wiki and google and though there are some posts but no clear solution. I can adjust the xterm font but it lasts only for one session. Any help will be appreciated.

I am not sure if I have been able to define the problem clearly. The 'nautilus-open-terminal' package adds to nautilus a menu item (under File) 'open in terminal' which opens a terminal in the folder being viewed in nautilus (rather than opening a terminal from launcher, which will be opened in the home folder). However, the terminal being opened is xterm and I want to change it to xfterm4. How can I manage this? Thanks for your help.

No nautilus-open-terminal in Arch64??

The nautilus-open-terminal package is listed as being in the community repo, but it doesn't seem to be in the Arch64 community repo... shouldn't this one be easy?
Also, where can one see what's in Arch64 repos?

i'm sure hte x64 and x32 repos are not exactly in sync so it may takea lil while for them to match each other ....
i use both systems, keep them both up to date and some pkg's in x64 are more up to date, i.e nautilus 2.18.2 in x64 while nautilus 2.18.1 in x32 and both systems have the same configs .. repos: testing,unstable, etc.
i don't know about nautilus -open terminal, because i changed the pkgbuild to work with the new /usr layout so i suggest you do the same and not live without a great little nautilus plugin any longer

Using Open DNS etc with a Verizon and secondary router

I have a Airport Extreme Base Station setup in Bridge Mode to the Verizon router. How do I add or replace the DNS server to Open DNS etc?

You need to set your desired DNS servers in the Actiontec since that is your DHCP server. When the AEBS is in bridge mode, its DHCP server is disabled.
Login to the Actiontec
Click on the My Network icon
Select Network Connections from the left menu
Select Broadband coax or Broadband ethernet as appropriate.
Click on Settings
Across from DNS Server, select "Use the following DNS Server addresses" from the pulldown.
Enter the primary and secondary DNS Server addresses for OpenDNS.
Click Apply.

How can I use automator to open terminal change directory run a python script?

Hi all,
I dont really ever use automator - which may be my big problem - and I am trying to make an apllication that seems fairly simple in theroy. I want something that will lunch terminal, cd to the place where my python script lives and then run it. I have tried a number of suggested ways and can get the terminal to open and the directory to change but cant figure out how to run the script. This is my workflow if i did it manually each time
- open terminal
- type cd "the place where my file lives"
- type python uploadr.py -d
I can get terminal to open then cd to the right place but cant get the "python uploadr.py -d" to run without an error.
any help would be very appricated

Applescript/Photoshop save JPEG dialog hangs open

I have searched this issue but have not found a resolution. Every post I've found presents
"save current document in file filePath as JPEG with options myOptions"
as sufficient. When I try it, the dialog just hangs open:
This snippet works fine with TIFFs and PDFs:

Delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder. Then launch iWeb and see if it opens.
What happened was trying to open the html file reset the file path that iWeb saves in its preference file to tell it where to go when you launch iWeb. Deleting the pref file and launching iWeb creates a new file and iWeb looks in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder for the Domain.sites2 file it uses to create your site.

I am new to solaris8-x86.Until now I have spent 6 days to install s8-x86 on my pc but without success once.
Below is my pc hardware:
Motherboard-qdi;chipset-Via apollo pro;cpu:p-II 400;video chip:S3 trio 64v2 dx/gx 8472;10G seagate HD;Samsung cd-rom 40X.
In order to keep compatabality,I removed all other card--AGP video,D-link lan card.
Following is my problem: I do the installation on a clean HD.The installation can be started correctly and I select auto reboot.But just after message "installation completed" two error messages show as: err:can't open /a/etc/vfstab
err:can't create /etc/vfstab
Then the machine make no progress(no auto reboot),but there appears a prompt #.When type in 'reboot',the system can boot from HD,but into DCA screen.
I had tried for N times but the just same error appeared N times.How to deal with this?????? I need you helpppp! Thanks to all of you in advance.

Now I am glad to tell everyone that I have solved the problem! so I want to share the answer with someone who maybe will be bothered with such questions.Until now,and maybe forever-I guess,this is the only reply! SELF ASK SELF ANSWER.
I eventually solved the problem by changing my 128M memory. Just so simple! The old PC-133 SDRAM has some error during data transferring,there same "no" error occor when running WIN9x,but solaris can't endure such errors,----sensitively SOLARIS.
Notice, I believe that this is ONLY ONE OF SO MANY circumstances that leading to a "can't open /etc/vfstab" error,It is only a clue for you. anyway good luck!

CC bridge hangs opening folders

CC bridge hangs opening folders, I am using Win 7 64 bit.
At this point I am using Bridge CS5 to browse folders, that works flawlessly.
Is there a way to fix or reinstall program ?

I've recompiled almost 40 days ago and i've had no problem at all.
Have you tried logging out before trying?

Trying to turn off spotlight because it's a resource hog. open terminal and enter command but it won't respond or even ask for password.

Step #1:
In System Preferences click on Spotlight.
Step #2:
Click on the Privacy tab here.
Step #3:
Click on the + button here and when the window opens click on "Macintosh HD" (or whatever you've named your HD) and then click the Choose button.

Opening terminal in applescript changes input to Japanese

When I try to use Applescript to open terminal, it opens it but changes the input language to Japanese, so anything that I attempt to feed into terminal via applescript turns into nonsense Japanese.
The default language is English
How do i stop this?

Since my snow leopard MBP can't handle smb mounts, I've resorted to using sharity, except that its gui crashes the instant I try to mount a drive. But I can mount samba shares using sharity from the command line. I'd like to have it mount on startup which is supposedly something sharity can accomplish from its gui but since that doesn't work I would like to write an applescript and add it to the login items. I haven't been able mount it using do shell script as the sharity command line, unlike the normal samba mount command) doesn't seem to have an option of entering the password, so the mount fails:
sharity mount smb://user@address/folder
I thought if I open terminal via applescipt, then have it 'type' the command followed by a delay, then type the password, I could get around it but when I open terminal in applescipt, it starts in Japanese:

Basically its all because of the samba bug in snow leopard (which I reported to apple and they confirmed its the same issue they know about)
