Applescript/Photoshop save JPEG dialog hangs open

re: OS 10.8.2 / Photoshop CS5.1
I have searched this issue but have not found a resolution. Every post I've found presents
"save current document in file filePath as JPEG with options myOptions"
as sufficient. When I try it, the dialog just hangs open:
This snippet works fine with TIFFs and PDFs:
tell application "Finder" to set filePath to (home as string) & "Desktop:TestFolder:Test.TIFF"
set thePosix to quoted form of POSIX path of filePath
tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1"
          set fileOptions to {class:TIFF save options, image compression:none, byte order:Mac OS, save alpha channels:true, save spot colors:true, embed color profile:true}
save current document in file filePath as TIFF with options fileOptions
end tell
But when I try to save a JPEG this way, the Save dialog opens with the correct options, but it just stays open. I even tried to exit through the GUI (commented out) but the script is clearly waiting for the save to complete - the GUI commands never execute.
tell application "Finder" to set filePath to (home as string) & "Desktop:TestFolder:Test.JPEG"
set thePosix to quoted form of POSIX path of filePath
tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1"
          set fileOptions to {class:JPEG save options, quality:8, embed color profile:true}
save current document in file filePath as JPEG with options fileOptions
          delay 1
          tell application "System Events"
                    tell process "Photoshop"
                              keystroke return
                              delay 1
                              keystroke return
                    end tell
          end tell
end tell
This doesn't happen with a TIFF or a PDF. How do I exit the dialog?
Thanks for your help.

Where's the dialog? Please post your full script.

  • Photoshop saves JPEG images much too dark--any ideas?

Hi there, I'm having an issue with my Photoshop applications and I was hoping someone could give me a little insight/help in fixing the problem.
When working with a file in Photoshop (I am an artist, so I usually create my files from scratch rather than loading them from a camera), I can get the colors to appear as they should in the workspace. When I finish artwork, I make sure the colors are exactly as I want them, then save it as a JPEG file. However, if I open this JPEG file in any application--browsers, photo viewing programs--it is extremely dark and saturated. If I open the JPEG in Photoshop, though, it looks fine. This issue seems to have occurred spontaneously 3-4 months ago. I don't recall changing or deleting any of my monitor or video card preferences, or my color profiles. I was working with Photoshop Elements 4.0 at the time, and it suddenly started happening.
Now, I have found a sort of work-around for it. If I screencap my workspace with the artwork open in it, then I can open up that screencap in Photoshop. The colors are much TOO bright and washed out when I do this, but if I crop the image so it's just the artwork and save it, then it displays in browsers and viewing programs more or less as it should, i.e. how I see it in Photoshop. However, if I open that JPEG in Photoshop, it will display much brighter than the original artwork.
It's not a desperate issue since I have this weird work-around, but I'm currently trying to save images for printing--which means they need to be very large, and I'm not keen on zooming to 100% and screen-capping the art piece by piece, then stitching it all together before saving it. I'd really like to get this issue resolved. I thought it might have to do with the fact that I was using outdated software (PSE 4.0), but I've just recently upgraded to CS5 Extended and the same issue prevails.
If it's any help, I'm working on an HP EliteBook 8740w, with Windows 7 and an NVIDIA Quadro video card.
Here are the things I've tried, which haven't worked:
Deleting Photoshop preferences/settings (in both PSE 4.0 and CS5)
    Uninstalling and re-installing both programs
    Re-calibrating my monitor
Changing color settings in Photoshop (files still end up dark regardless)
    Disabling OpenGL Drawing
Switching between file types when saving
I am at my wit's end! I am mostly concerned that my clients and professors aren't going to see my work as it is intended to look, when they view it online. The erratic behavior of too-dark or too-light, and my pictures seemingly never displaying correctly on any browser or in any program, has me a little paranoid about my online portfolio, haha. I'm applying for an art scholarship in a month, and if none of my work will save correctly (much less print correctly!) then it will be a sad day indeed!
As I said before, this problem seems to have popped up out of nowhere. My artwork from before the whole saving-too-dark issue began still displays perfectly in most programs, but the rest is totally hit-and-miss. If any of you have fixes or suggestions (even suggestions on adjusting Photoshop so that my images display more consistently in browsers and other programs) I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks so much for your time,
    -Jenna

Though you have solved your problem, be aware, that different applications have different ways to interpret color profiles that can be set in different ways.
    Example:
In Firefox, you can either set a color profile or not -- AFAIK, it only works with v2 ICC profiles (vs. v4, v3 seems to have not been released).
From that point, you can set perceptual, absolute, colormetric, or one other...(forget)... but usually you just set that to perceptual for monitor work as I understand it.  Then a 3rd FF setting (all in its registry, of course, though occasionally there are extensions that let you manage the three settings.  They correspond to values (accessible through 'about:config' in FF's address window), all under the prefix:
    "gfx.color_management."
"display_profile"  -  text string of file containing a v2 ICC profile, usually in "C:\Windows\System32\Spool\drivers\color\" (at least on Win7) -- extention ".icm"
"mode" -- when to turn it on (2=for pics that have profiles set, another is for always (1?)), maybe 0=off?
"rendering_intent" - this corresponds to perceptual, abs, colormetric, types, I think 0=perceptual (default)
for FF, if you google one of those values, you'll find more info on some mozillian-type site... "prefix<keyname>" (e.g. -  gfx.color_management.display_profile ).
Other progs may have their own or if we are lucky would use the system profile & color management system (assuming it is any good).
Getting an accurate monitor profile and keeping it updated as your monitor 'decays' (i.e. color is usually best when new, then they decay, w/useful life at max gamut ~ 18 months (in my experience), after that, you can still retune to the same white point, but with a loss of gamut due to the phosphors decaying at different rates).
It's best to use some sort of external calibration HW... -- as an external device looking at your monitor through it's various colors is the only way to get a 'digitally objective' measurement.  That said, I always have concerns about the stability of the measuring device over time.  Does it have components that  that could cause non-linear measurement?  Am guessing not as likely, as it isn't emitting anything so less wear & tear, but I wouldn't assume it's 100% accurate over time either (but certainly is better than one's own eye which can gradually adjust to just about anything).  I had a viewsonic when I first got my current color device (a Spyder3), and it had gone from an original white point of 6500K down to 5700K -- and I had not noticed the difference (over 18-20 months)...
I could bring it back in range, but had lost gamut, and was a bit below the sRGB (consumer grade) standard (which is some fractional
value of the Adobe Photoshop or NTSC standards, which are similar in the size of their ranges, but slightly offset from each other).
The result of all this -- I never really know how my images will look on other monitors, but I try to tag them w/my current monitor profile, hoping that if they care about color, they'll have some SW on their end that can make sense of it...but given my own experience in how SW on the same system handles color differently, I wouldn't say they were 'high hopes'... ;-)

  • Save As dialog hangs when browsing to SharePoint library

    Version: Adobe Reader X (10.1.3)
    OS: Windows 7 Enterprise
Description of Problem: when I use Save As > PDF and browse to a SharePoint library, I cannot browse into the library itself/access sub folders or document sets, etc. The dialog box simply hangs until you click Cancel or click to another location.
I can access the SharePoint library easily via Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer (browser).
I can also browse okay through the Open dialog box in Adobe Reader as it uses the same dialog as Windows Explorer.

Ok, so I'm getting somewhere. The "Save to Online Account" button at the bottom left of the Save As dialog box in Reader provides the ability to save to Office 365 or SharePoint.
However you need to copy and paste the URL of the SharePoint location.
Once you do this you can happily browse through the SharePoint location, save your file and add metadata.
The UI is pretty limited though. It looks and feels like an FTP program...
At least I can see my online SharePoint hierarchy!
In summary, the SharePoint integration is there and allows metadata capture and check-in/check-out, but you can't leverage existing connections in your SharePoint Sites folder C:\Users\<username>\SharePoint Sites. You need to copy and paste the URLs and create Favourites in the "Save to Online Account" UI.

  • Save As dialog box opens random location

I have been trying to save some attachments from my emails in entourage, but whenever it brings up the save dialog box, the default finder location is completely random. It is not based on my last known location, nor a default 'Desktop' or 'Documents' folder. It will change every time. I can save 3 emails in a row and they will all open in different locations....
    oddd....
    any thoughts?

I too am having the same issue, in every program. Whenever I have a save dialog box open, it picks a completely random location to save it to, which becomes quite old when you have to save multiple files back-to-back in the same location. Anyone have any ideas?

  • "Save As" Dialog Box Opens As Full Screen. How to Disable?

At some point my "Save As" dialog box began to open as full screen. Don't know why. There is no way that I can find to get it out of full screen mode. I've looked at the preferences and can't find any obvious control for this behavior. It's not a big deal, but it's very annoying. I've not been able to find anywhere else that this question has been asked.
I tried "Save As Other" and it behaves the same way.
The document itself is not opened full screen.
I'm using Windows 7. Currently I'm running Adobe Reader XI, but the behavior started before that. I think I may have accidentally typed in some combination of keys (or dropped something on the keyboard) that set some kind of option somewhere.
    Thanks for any help.

Wouldn't you know it. By entering this question a similar question finally showed up. The answer is to right-click in the top of the window and select "Restore." Problem solved.

  • Photoshop Save As dialog changed- broken with Acrobat update?

I'm using CS3 on a 27" quad core iMac with 10.6.4. I'm trying to save small image files in a particular BMP format for embedded systems use- something I've done many times before.
However the Save As dialog in Photoshop no longer give the usual set of options- instead I see only:
    Photoshop
    Cineon
    Dicom
    Large Document Format
    Photoshop PDF
    Photoshop RAW
    PNG
    TIFF
Only thing that has changed is the updater for Acrobat that ran yesterday. The file format options that were in Photoshop are no longer present.
Of course, we are under the gun as a programmer is waiting for me to deliver the BMP files- all I can think to do is install Photoshop on another system.

The other thing that changed is your image color bit depth. Switch it back to 8 bit under the image menu.

  • Editing in Photoshop saves jpeg to "Originals", not "Modified"

I recently started using Photoshop CS6 to edit my photos from iPhoto 8.1.2. I've set up the preferences to use CS6 as my external editor, and "Use Raw when using external editor" (I am shooting raw format). The file opens fine in Adobe Bridge, I make my adjustments and bring it into Photoshop.
The problem comes when I try to save - previously, when I chose Save, CS6 knew to save the file back to the "Modified" folder in my iPhoto library. Now, it is saving it back to the "Originals" folder, along with an .xmp file, and of course the edited photo does not show up in iPhoto (neither in enlarged nor thumbnail views). If I choose Save As and try to save it to the Modified folder, I can't complete the path because the iPhoto library is a package and won't open in the Save As browser window.
How to get my save function back on track, so I can save directly back to Modified without having to import the files again?

If you're editing RAW in iPHoto with PS you must save the edited version as a new file outside of iPhoto and import into iPHoto from there.  Only jpegs, tiffs, gifs can be edited in iPhoto by PS and have the normal Save get the edited version in the correct Modified folder.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Photoshop "save as" dialog not working on Parallels

I have Photoshop CS5 running on a MacBook OS 10.8 under Parallels/Windows XP.  When I try to "Save as", the dialog box does not come up.  I have installed the latest update.  The other CS5 programs (e.g., Dreamweaver and Fireworks) do not have this problem.  Also, when I try to do a "Save for Web and Devices", the dialog box DOES come up, but it is oversized for the window and cannot be resized to make the control buttons accessible.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi Noel!  Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried to fiddle with the window resolution in the control panel.  This made a mess...but in the process I discovered that if I run Photoshop in Coherence mode (i.e., not inside with Windows "window"), the dialogue box shows up.  So, your suggestion about the window resolution did solve the problem.
    Thank you!

  • All Office 2010 Applications Slow To Produce "OPEN" or "SAVE AS" Dialog Box ONLY When PC Connected To Network

    Hello all,
Frustrating problem: ALL Office 2010 apps require a 45 second delay to produce an "open" or "save as" dialog box when the computer is connected to a LAN (wireless or wired, domain or workgroup). When the computer is NOT connected to a LAN (wireless or wired,
domain or workgroup), then Office 2010 "open" or "save as" dialog boxes open normally (and quickly).
I suspect a network search/survey function internal to MS Office is at fault.
This is NOT the infamous mapped network drive problem associated with Office 2007/2010. There are no mapped drives (nor have there ever been) on the PC, although there might exist a related solution. Additionally, there is no 45 second delay when opening
a file by double-clicking on the file itself which will launch the application.
    Other information:
    1. PC runs Windows 7 Pro 32 bit - PC is a relatively new Lenovo T400 laptop, all updates from Lenovo and MS installed, running clean and nicely otherwise, no spyware, no viruses, no previous software or hardware issues requiring assistance. Event log is
    clean.
    2. Absolutely fresh installation of Office 2010 Pro Plus (MS Action Pack)
    3. Running Office apps in safe mode does not alter problem behavior (ie, "windword.exe /a" or use CTRL key and double-click to launch app)
    4. Running Windows 7 in safe mode with networking and then subsequently testing Office apps is not possible: "license not able to validate" issue. This is a known problem and is not related to the slow dialog box response behavior.
    5. A desktop PC with the same MS Office 2010 installation, same volume license key, on the same network does NOT produce this problem.
    6. Full uninstall, reboot, and re-install of Office 2010 does not alleviate problem
    7. Disabling ALL startup items and services (including, of course, ALL Lenovo management software) does not alleviate problem
    8. SMB v2 bug is not the problem: ie, disabling mrxsmb20 service does not alleviate symptoms.
    9. I have isolated "Client for Microsoft Networks", "QOS Packet Scheduler", "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver" (and Responder), and "Printer and File Sharing for MS Networks" in the network adapter properties are NOT causing the issue.
    10. Using Sysinternals Registry Monitor, I was able to determine that Office apps evaluate certain properties of your Internet Explorer settings before attempting to launch the "open" or "save as" dialog box. Altering the way intranets are detected, for
example, does not alleviate the symptoms.
    11. Turning off Antivirus software (Avira Personal) does not alleviate the issue.
This issue is causing a huge loss of work efficiency. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.
    Sincerely,
    Rick

    Hello Rick,
Through all the research I have done so far and talking with a few other coworkers what the common issues that cause this are is:
    1. Antivirus: disabling the antivirus is not good enough it needs to be totaly uninstalled and retested.
    2. startup programs: these need to be disabled through either Safe mode with networking or the start menu or MSconfig.
    3. Office addins: Disable all of them see if that helps. Then turn them back on one by one to see which addin is causing the issue.
To disable addins: 1. open up regedit and navigate to this key. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Addins and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins
Then change the LoadBehavior to 0 this will disable the addin. 3 lets it run. Since this affected only one user HKEY_LOCAL_USER might be your best bet but don't rule out the other location.
To verify there are no addins running go to the File tab>options>Add-Ins make sure nothing is listed under Active Application Add-ins.
    I hope this helps
    Thanks,

  • 'Save as Type' box in 'Save As' dialog box

I recently downloaded 'Rocket PDF' and now if I try to save any PDF. document, the only choices in the 'save as type' box are 'Rocket PDF' or 'All files'. No more 'Adobe Reader PDF. appears as a choice. I uninstalled 'Rocket PDF' and in the 'Default changes' I put 'Adobe Reader as the default to open 'PDF.'. Still, the only choices on the 'save as type ' are 'Rocket PDF' or 'All files'! How do I get Adobe Reader PDF' back as a choice in the 'save as type' box and delete 'Rocket PDF' as a choice?

  • Strange folders appearing in "Save As" dialog box

    Hello
    *Description of Problem or Question:
If you open a Web Intelligence report that has been sent to you from your Inbox I have noticed there are "extra" folders I wouldn't expect to see. As an administrator and can see the following extra "strange" folders:
    Categories
    Inboxes
    Internal Storage Folder
    Personal Categories
    Root Folder
    Temporary Storage
    User Folders
    (Please see attached screenshot)
As a non-admin user I can only see the extra folder "Root Folder".
This does look odd for a non-admin user as they see the same folder structure twice. E.g:
    Public Folders
    >>Finance Reports
    >>Operations Reports
    >>Root Folder
    >>>>>Finance Reports
    >>>>>Operations Reports
Any ideas on how to hide these folders from the "save as" dialog box?
It does only seems to happen if a report is opened from a users Inbox.

  • Photoshop CS6 Windows - Open\Save as dialog box

Why in Photoshop & Illustrator CS6 "Open" and "Save as" dialog box style is from Windows XP?
In AfterEffects, Audition and other is new dialog box style:
Can Adobe add in "Preferences" - option with checkbox for users Windows 7/8
who can use the new windows explorer with extended folder bar?
That would be simplified and speeded up a lot of things.

  • Applescript photoshop open file delay

    Hi,
I have a problem with photoshop and applescript. When I run the following simple applescript which opens a document and saves it in a location:
    tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS3"
    open picpathalias
-- delay 10 -- quite a long delay is needed
save current document in file regpicpath as JPEG
    end tell
I often receive the following error:
Adobe Photoshop CS3 got an error: General Photoshop error occurred. This functionality may not be available in this version of Photoshop.
    - The object current document is not currently available.
It seems there is a race between the open cmd and the save cmd. This most often happens when photoshop is not yet an open application. It almost never happens when photoshop is already open. Is there a programmatic way to make open block until the document is available?
    Thanks.

To clarify, I would like to avoid a soln that uses an arbitrary timeout delay if possible.

    Blair,
I followed your suggestions above....reset IE ...clean boot. Didn't solve the problem.  (had trouble making that MSCONFIG window bigger !? <wink>)
Problem still exists.  And to be clear, here is the problem(s) ...I believe they are all interrelated.
#1.  I end the explorer.exe process and restart it.  Run Explorer and start clicking folders in my FAVORITES.  System hangs for about 10 seconds before it catches up.
Alternatly, after a explorer.exe restart, if I run explorer and start clicking down through folders from the C: drive, there is no hang.   SUSPECT - some sort of file for favorites needs to be rebuilt?!
#2. Open MS Word.  Type a few letters.  Select File/Save.  Most icons under Favorites are white.  Trying clicking more than one, but system hangs for ten seconds until icons fill in.
#3.  WINDOWS button, start typing in the search INTERNET....5-10 seconds before Internet Explorer (and other INT* things show up.!  Usually this is instantaneous.

  • How can I re-save jpegs edited in photoshop that were created in lr4 as jpegs?

    Hi,
I have some raw2 files that I have edited in LR4 and exported as jpegs. I open them in Photoshop CS3 and edit (crop in this instance) but the save menu has a much reduced number of file types for these items, and jpeg is not one of them. How can I get round this? The edited file defaults to a psd file after I have cropped it. I have tried to resave in other formats (tiff, psd, raw) in photoshop, then reopen them to save as jpeg, but the same reduced number of options are there - and no jpeg.
    Thanks for your help
    Rachel
[ADDED] I wanted to mention that I checked it was RGB mode and 8 bit, but it is. thanks

Your files are 16-bits and JPG is an 8-bit format.  They may also have the ProPhotoRGB color-space.
Before saving as JPGs for displaying on the web or viewing by others they need to be 8-bit sRGB:
PS-> Edit -> Convert to Profile -> Destination Space = sRGB  (if the Source Space is not sRGB)
    PS -> Image -> Mode -> 8-bits (to convert from 16-bits to 8-bits)
