XML import = missing entities (common HTML tags)?

I have a very simple XML doc, mostly text, but with common HTML tags (nbsp, for example).
Upon import, I get an error for several of these tags - "Entity _____ was not found."
These are common HTML characters - what can I do so that InDesign recognizes them? Do I have something set wrong? Do I have to map them?
Thanks in advance...

Nigel, this is completely unrelated to your post, so please excuse me interrupting but i'm not sure how else to go about it.
I found a thread you initiated (via Google) which is no longer available in the forum here -- and Google only shows the first level of the thread's messages. All of this is to say, if you'd email me regarding it, i'd appreciate it. aaron (at) inis (dot) ie

  • Can a DTD map custom styles to standard HTML tags?

    Hi,
    Every week the publishing house I work for has to manually copy the entire content of a weekly magazine on an article-by-article basis into an online database, the web version of the magazine. This means copying the styled InDesign content and inserting it into the database as plain text, re-finding all those italics (and any other styling) and putting it all back manually.
    I already know that I can create tags with all the basic HTML styles needed in the 'Tags' palette in InDesign, and then export that.
    The trouble is that when I re-import the XML file, I have to laboriously map the custom house-styles (there are many of them and they're boiler-plate, i.e. consistent, across all the magazine's InDesign styles) to the imported HTML styles.
    So here's my question:
    Am I wrong to believe that it's possible to create a DTD that would import not only the HTML tags but their relationship to the existing, custom-named InDesign tags that are common to all the magazine's documents?
    As an InDesign wish-feature, what's missing from the 'Tags' corner-menu is 'Export DTD' - if that was available, I could map the whole relationship between Indesign Styles/HTML styles just one time and later import the DTD on other articles; which would tell the Structure View how to convert our custom house-styles (both Paragraph Styles and Character Styles) into HTML tags and cut this time-consuming task in half.
    Thanks!
    EDIT: I perhaps should have mentioned that obviously the final stage after this 'dream conversion' is to export the XML from the Structure View. Then I can just open the saved XML file and paste it into the CMS with formatting intact.
    Added extra explanation of the workflow.

    Googling XSLT and InDesign, it seems that such a stylesheet, if I were to create it, possibly couldn't handle spaces in the original InDesign style-names..? If anyone knows that for a fact, I'd be glad to be aware of it before starting down a long path to a roadblock.
    That's a good question. Let's find out together, shall we. I just created a text frame with Lorem Ipsum text, and created "a style" (with space) and "bstyle" (without). Now ... Map Style to Tag doesn't work, presumably because the tags don't exist and I assumed this would *create* them. And if you create one, ID complains "tags cannot contain tabs or spaces". (So can you have a Tab in your paragraph style name then? Gosh.)
    ... Forcing in a Non-breaking Space (#160) also doesn't work, this time ID simply says "A tag name cannot contain the character ' '."
    I think that's one you have to do manually.

    I'm guessing that if I wanted to change the InDesign style 'Subheader' into 'h2', that snippet of the XSLT would be like this...?
    <xsl:template match="Subheader"><h2><xsl:apply-templates /></h2></xsl:template>
    Yeah, that's the correct syntax. But you cannot use an XSLT for mapping InDesign styles to tags. The process as I described works when importing your XML into InDesign, and changes the tags in the XML file to match InDesign styles. That's the other way around.
    I don't expect anyone to write this for me, but any hints or links to tutes that I haven't yet found would be appreciated!
    For a simple one-to-one translation of tag names, you can use this all the way. You only need any other XSL command if you want to do more than simple translation, such as filtering, moving, combining, or separating tags or their contents.
    There are lots of good tutes on the 'web for XSLT, although it seems interest has diminished lately. Half a decade ago XSLT was "hot"; nowadays the iPad is. Is there any news on improvements for ID's native XSLT support in CS6? I dare bet there are none at all -- it's already been deemed "yesterday's technology" by Adobe's Dev Team, just as Flash was discarded per CS5.5. I'm sure next year DPS will follow; and the year after that EPubs will be gone for good as well, replaced by holograms, transmitted live from your local library.

  • [CS2][AS] Make XML import map is calling a refresh on styles?

    If this can be of use to someone else... it's probably not CS2,AS specific.. but this is what i use.
    It's the second time i have a bug like this, where changing the order of my calls is fixing the problem. With this one, i was getting random missing font error (times(1)) while batching documents(wich make the batch script batch crash as there is a modal dialog open). Not always on the same document, it was really fustrating as i was not able to get my finger on the problem!
    I actually knew the source of the problem as i had added a fix (maybe not the best solution, but it was working well) that actually was removing the style from all the text frame (i noticed that using map style to tag was not always working well(when text frame had overriden?), so that's why i added code to reset the style before doing a map. But i was not understanding why it was happening so randomly...
    I tought at first it was happening during save (as it reopen the document) but after a few experimentation it looked like it was occuring during the import map redefinition (See code below: make XML import map with properties {markup tag:tStyle, mapped style:tStyle}).
    Looks like the make XML import is calling some sort of document refresh wich then pop the font missing dialog (even with never interact as script preferences!)! (missing font is actually a bug i had also in other circumstances.. exemple when you have a extra return at the end of a tagged text (outside the tag)). A bit unexpected, i really tought that creating a xml import map was just creating data structure in document model to be used later on by the auto style call...
    The problematic script:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS2"
    set myDocument to document 1
    tell myDocument
    --Reset styles.
    set applied character style of every text of every text frame of every spread to character style 1
    set applied paragraph style of every text of every text frame of every spread to paragraph style 1
    --Create a tag to style mapping.
    set tList to name of every XML tag
    set tNumItems to count of tList
    repeat with i from 1 to tNumItems
    set tStyle to item i of tList
    make XML import map with properties {markup tag:tStyle, mapped style:tStyle}
    end repeat
    --Map the XML tags to the defined styles.
    auto style
    end tell
    end tell
    And the working solution (just moved the reset of style after the import map creation loop):
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS2"
    set myDocument to document 1
    tell myDocument
    --Create a tag to style mapping.
    set tList to name of every XML tag
    set tNumItems to count of tList
    repeat with i from 1 to tNumItems
    set tStyle to item i of tList
    make XML import map with properties {markup tag:tStyle, mapped style:tStyle}
    end repeat
    --Reset styles.
    set applied character style of every text of every text frame of every spread to character style 1
    set applied paragraph style of every text of every text frame of every spread to paragraph style 1
    --Map the XML tags to the defined styles.
    auto style
    end tell
    end tell

    it doesnt print any server control message. in my "page_404.jsp" I am printing current date and time (to check if the server visited that page) everytime when i refresh "index.jsp" the server goes to "page_404.jsp" and prints the current date and time.
    so basically the only message which the console shows is the current date/time which i am printing in the "page_404.jsp"

  • AIA Error Notification Format : HTML Tags

    Hi All,
    I am trying to customize the AIA Error notifications in AIAEHNotification.xml file to include the html tags such as &lt;font color="blue"&gt; etc. to change the look of the error message. But the same is not getting reflected in the error emails I receive.
    I'm sure the file AIAEHNotification.xml is getting updated as I can see my updated content every time but not html formatted in any case.
    Does default AIA Error handler support HTML tags inside the email body message or it just uses &lt;pre&gt; by default before sending the notification?
    AIA 3.0

    Regards,

    Neeraj,
    html tags are not supported in the AIA EH notification framework as of now and I am not aware of any plans to support this in any of the next releases.

    None of the above works fine after importing xml to Indesign document/templete, it is not renderting equivalent out instead it is showing the same text inside tags in the Indesign document.
    I have lot of content in our database, I will export to XML, import to Indesign, Indesign should render required output like what we see in the browser and export the output to printed format.
    Import formated XML to indesign --> Export to Quality Print Format
    Can any one guide me and let me know whether it is posible to do with Indesign, if so let me know in case if I am missing anything in importing xml and get required output.
    Thanks in advance. Waiting for reply ASAP.

    Possibly your expectations are too high. ... Scratch that "possibly".
    XML, in general, cannot be "rendered". It's just an abstract data format. Compare it to common markup such as *asterisks* to indicate emphasized words -- e-mail clients will show this text in bold, but InDesign, and the vast majority of other software, does not.
    To "render" XML, HTML, MathML, or LaTeX -- you seem to freely mix these *very* different markup formats, unaware of the fact that they are vastly different from each other! -- in the format you "expect", you need to apply the appropriate software to each of  the original data files. None of these markup languages are supported natively by InDesign.

  • XML with HTML Tags... (easy points) 11g question

    Dear Programming Gods,
    I have been researching this for about 2 weeks now, and I have hit the final road block.
    Using BI Publisher 11.1.1
    In APEX 4.0 I have a Rich Text Field. The data from the Rich Text Field is store in CLOB. The data has HTML formatting tags. I have a data model that selects the data. I create an xml which has the html tags. I export the xml and import it into MS Word using the BI Publisher add-in. I import my subtemplate which handles almost all of the formatting tags. I apply the template to the CLOB field so that the HTML formatting tags will be rendered when printed.
    The problem is this. The subtemplate is looking for this < and / > however BI publisher convters the tags stored in the CLOB from raw html tags to this &.lt; and &.gt; so the subtemplate can not match to it.
    Here is what I need to figure out and please explain it in very novice terms.
    When I generate and export the XML from BI Publisher how do I prevent it from converting my raw tags?
    Here is some further assistance when prepairing your answer.
    My subtemplate is based on the htmlmarkup.xsl from the following blog but has been modified heavily to include support for simple tables, more formatting such as subscripts and superscripts, ect...
    http://blogs.oracle.com/xmlpublisher/2007/01/formatting_html_with_templates.html
    I am also familliar with this blog but I do not understand how to implement it using BI 11g.
    http://blogs.oracle.com/xmlpublisher/2009/08/raw_data.html
    I have tried adding this to my layout but it doesnt seem to work.
    <xsl: element name="R_CLOB" dataType="xdo:xml" value="R_CLOB" / >
    Please, help me. I have to have this working in 4 days.

    This did not work either. Here's more infor on what I have so far.

  • XML Import: Hide HTML?

    When I import an XML file into text fields in InDesign the HTML markup tags get transfered (are not removed or rendered as an HTML section).
    For instance when I import:
    <article>
         <title>This is a title</title>
         <body>&lt;p&gt;This is a body paragraph.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This is another paragraph&lt;/p&gt;</body>
    </article>
    OR
    <article>
         <title>This is a title</title>
         <body><![CDATA[<p>This is a body paragraph.</p><p>This is another paragraph</p>]]></body>
    </article>
    The <p> tags still appear in the InDesign text boxes instead of being converted into InDesign paragraphs or stripped out entirely.
    Is there a way to remove or hide the tags when they are imported in InDesign?

    JTRobinson wrote:

    </article>
    This is correct; those are not HTML tags, but literal characters < and > -- correctly encoded as "&lt;" and "&gt;" -- and then translated into their correct representations, which only happens to look like HTML.
    <article>
         <title>This is a title</title>
         <body><![CDATA[<p>This is a body paragraph.</p><p>This is another paragraph</p>]]></body>
    </article>
    This is also correct. Any stuff inside a CDATA bracketed section should not be parsed as XML, so this is also plain text.

  • How to Include html tag in xml

  • HTML tags in XML document

    I have an application that loads information from an XML file
    and displays in a dynamic text box. That works great. Now, I want
    to add HTML tags to the information in the XML file so the dynamic
    text box will format it. If I add straight html:
    <Answer1>of earth, <b>air</b>, fire, and
    water.</Answer1>
    I get a null displayed in the text box. If I encode
    <Answer1>of earth,
    &gt;b&lt;air&gt;/&lt;, fire, and
    water.</Answer1>
    Then it displays
    of earth, <b>air</b>, fire, and water.
    Any help on how to embedded html code into an XML document so
    a dynamic text box uses the html code?
    Thanks.

    Just use CDATA tags around your HTML values, eg:
    <Answer1><![CDATA[of earth, <b>air</b>,
    fire, and water.]]></Answer1>
    HTH.

  • How to delete empty tags after xml-import

    Hello collegues,
    I'm totally new in this forum so excuse me if I make a mistake, but I've a little question.
    I've imported text and images with a xml-import but sometimes empty tags (the colored invisible blocks) are in my text, with the result that I can't Find/Change on double-returns.
    Does anybody know an awnser to this matter? I would love to write an apple-script that will find/change this so i don't have to look after all my pages.
    Thank you very much in advance.

    ThePictureCreator wrote:
    ...I can't Find/Change on double-returns.
    What's your search query? I think you should be able to, with either a grep find of "\r+" or a normal text find of "^p^p". InDesign pretends like the tag-holding characters aren't there for the purpose of search. But you will lose the empty elements along with the extra returns. Maybe that is the problem?

    What is the text given by the " upcoming xml from server"?  What html elements are involved?

  • HTML Tags in XML Update

    I have a unique situation (may be not that unique). I want to update or add HTML tags in an XML element I am writing a PL/SQL Stored Procedure to insert, update or delete elements/attributes from an XML Type column based on the input XML (coming from Java application). SP is called from Java app. For example my XML may loook like
    <Description Name="Sales Message">
    <Text>This is a test</Text>
    </Description>
    I can update this in XML by creatinga SP which accepts a value (clob or text) and make a simple update call like
    UPDATE table_name
    SET hotel_xml = UPDATEXML (hotel_xml, Description[@Name=''Sales Message'']/Text/text()', 'This is a Test')
    WHERE id = 123;
    Hopwever when I have HTML tags in my parameter value, my update fails. For example java pp passes me a string
    This is a bold &lt;B&gt;Test&lt;/B&gt;
    (without encoding it is "This is a Bold <B>Test</B>"
    When I run this
    UPDATE table_name
    SET hotel_xml = UPDATEXML (hotel_xml, Description[@Name=''Sales Message'']/Text/text()', 'This is a bold &lt;B&gt;Test&lt;/B&gt;')
    WHERE id = 123;
    It thinks, I am passing a substitution variable (think &lt and &gt as sub variables) and the procedure fails.
    How do I handle HTML encoded charcters in Oarcle Pl/SQL? Many of my SPs has to accept XML as clob that may contain HTML encoding. Java always encodes HTML tags in an XML so I have to pass the CLOB(xml) to a SP as it is

    When this type of encoding is there in my XML or input variable, PL/SQL thinks
    its a substitution variable and tries to replace it by prompting replacement. I think »substitution variables« is the wrong phrase for this. Probably you mean »entity names«, and all that happens is that special characters are converted to »entity names« to ensure valid xml after the update:
    SQL> with table_name as (

  • Parsing XML with html tags for style

    I'm using flash to pull in XML data, but I want to use html
    tags to be able to style the text. When I add any html, it treats
    it as a sub-node and ignores the data. Also, line breaks in the xml
    are being converted to double spaced paragraphs? The relevant code
    is basically this:
    if (element.nodeName.toUpperCase() == "TEXT")
    {//add text to text array
    ar_text[s]=element.firstChild.nodeValue;
    textbox1.text = ar_text[0];

    try to use htmlText instead text... like this:
    textbox1.htmlText = ar_text[0]

  • Using HTML tags in XML

    Trying to bring in an xml document that contains HTML tags but I can't seem to get it working.
    I have a bit of AS and a basic text field in a movie clip for now. I've pared it down as simply as I can to the following AS:
    var languageXML:XML = new XML();
    var nav:Array = new Array();
    languageXML.ignoreWhite = true;
    languageXML.load("code.xml");
    languageXML.onLoad = function(success) {
        var currentNavNode:XMLNode = this.firstChild.firstChild;
        var i:Number = 0;
        for (var childNode = currentNavNode; childNode != null; childNode=childNode.nextSibling, i++) {
            for (var stringNode:XMLNode = childNode.firstChild; stringNode != null; stringNode=stringNode.nextSibling, j++) {
                _root.feature0 = stringNode.firstChild.nodeValue
        //all the xml has now loaded so we're good to kick off the full nav
        _root.textWin.myText.html = true;
        _root.textWin.myText.htmlText = _root.feature0;
    Whilst my XML doc looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <feed>
    <item>
        <body><![CDATA[This<br>Should<br><br>Be fine.]]></body>
    </item>
    </feed>

    does trace(_root.textWin.myText+" "+_root.textWin.myText.multiline) show that you have a multline textfield?  if not, fix that.

  • Including HTML tags in Spry XML data sets

    How does one add HTML tags to Spry XML data sets so that the displayed items include that markup?
    For example, I might want to bold-face words within XML data items. I have tried adding the markup, but instead of seeing, for example:
    This is bold face
    in the Spry table, I see:
    This is <b>bold</b> face
    I have tried using CDATA elements in the XML to no avail.

    Set the data type for the column as per
    var ds1 = new Spry.Data.XMLDataSet("myData.xml", "rows/row");
    ds1.setColumnType("myColumn", "html");
