XML in Illustrator javascript

hi,
Is there a way to read in XML data in Illustrator Javascript?
thanks,
paul

No all the app guides are specific to the app's DOM they contain nothing of JavaScript base/core syntax it's just expected to have gotten that elsewhere the Extended features of the Toolkit have a guide of there own… You should use this in addition to any suite app you are scripting… You also have the OMV object model veiwer… Under help from the toolkit… It should be installed as part of the suite but you can get it from the dev centre if not…

  • Using XML in Illustrator CS3

    Hello there,
    I was working on a Business Card design. Wherein I need to add Name, Address, Phone and Email of every person. I had all the data in Microsoft Excel. Then I exported my excel file to XML, and tried loading the XML file from Illustrator's Variables Palate. But I get an error message saying "The incoming variable library in invalid" !
    Is there a way I can make my excel file into a valid XML file.
    I also came across this link: http://www.spahr.org/pratt/2003/11/001241index.html
    but it seems that the script is not download able...
    I also have the txt file for the data ready as I was required .. but cant get it to convert to an XML file which Illustrator can understand....
    Any help in this regard would be of great help.
    Thanks.
    P.S.: I use both Windows XP and Max OS X

    The .zip archive mentioned on
    this page contains an AI Javascript named JET_VariablesFTROU (Variables For The Rest Of Us). Instead of monkeying around with XML and Illustrator's complication thereof, the script allows you to just paste your tab-delimited text from Excel into an ordinary text frame on the page. The script then creates Datasets in the Variables palette from that textframe.
    The process is described in detail in the PDF which accompanies the notes on the script.

  • How can I access xml document from javascript whithin a JSP page

    how can I access xml document from javascript whithin a JSP page?
    I have a JSP that receives an XML document from a JavaBean, so I can access it within the entire JSP, but I need to access it from the javascript inside the JSP... and I have no idea how i can do this.
    Thanks in advance!

    The solution would only work on MS IE browsers, as other browsers do not support an XML DOM.
    It can be done, but you would be stuck with using the Microsoft broswer. If that is acceptable, I have some example code, and a book recommendation.

  • How to place the images in Indesign xml file by Javascript?

    How to place the images in Indesign xml file by Javascript?
    We got the Indesign xml file, how to give the image placement link by Indesign javascript? Please help me its urgent.

    Hi,
    You can pass the image url as a href attribute=> file:///Users/me/Documents/my_pic.jpg directly within your xml. It just needs that you pass a local, static and valid url.
    If you want to add image later once the xml is flowed and so target specific nodes and inject images, it's a bit more complex. If the node is not part of the layout, you may try to reach the XMLElement objet and such an attribute, then layout the element.
    var x = some XMLElement
    x.xmlAttributes.add("href","file:///Users/m/Documents/my_pic.jpg" );
    If already placed, then you have to get the associated pageItem, then place your file into it.
    pagItm.place ( File ( "/Users/m/Documents/my_pic.jpg" ) );
    Hope that helps,
    Loic

  • How can I check for the existence of an XML file in Illustrator Javascript??

    I'm writing a Javascript to run at startup. I want to check for the existence of XML files and process them, if they are available. How can I check for their existence?

    Your first line just sets a variable to a string value… getFiles() is a method of Folder… so
    var InputXMLDir = Folder( "D:/Brackets/Create_Bracket_Graphics/Input/XML-n-Templates/" );
    Not a PC user so I can't remember if the colon is OK…? As you appear to know the file name why bother with a folder get files anyhow you could just check if the file exists then do some thing…
    alert( File( "D:/Brackets/Create_Bracket_Graphics/Input/XML-n-Templates/brackets_men_web.xml" ).exists );

  • Extracting data from Excel To Illustrator javascript or vbscript

    Hi all-
    I was wondering if there was a way to extract data from Excel to be used in Illustrator. I know there is an option of variables and xml, and I don't want that. I've seen and tried out how to read illustrator and write to excel, and I get that.  What I would like to do is pretty much the opposite:
    1.Pre-fill in an Excel file(.xls,.csv, doesn't matter) with data such as a filename in column 1 and (Replacement Text) in column 2 and close manually.
    2. Run script(VBSCRIPT,Javascript, doesn't matter)
    3.For each column in Excel file where cell in first column is not empty, open Illustrator Template with placeholder of "DWG" textframe and replace the frame titled "DWG" with Replacement text from Excel in Column2.
    4, Save each to a PDF file and name file with text from Excel Column1(Filename)
    In a nutshell, there will be a single illustrator template with a premade textFrame with a name of "DWG". Excel will contain two columns, one for the filename to be named and one for the relative text to replace with the placeholder in AI. I hoped I explained this well enough without causing too much confusion. Thanks in advance.
    Filename
    Replacement Text
    test1.pdf
    DWG01
    test2.pdf
    DWG02
    test3.pdf
    DWG03
    test4.pdf
    DWG04

    As text… \n is new line character and \r is return character. I can't remember which excel uses but they both equate to a line/paragraph… I very quickly threw together an example for you…
    #target Illustrator
    textToPDF();
    function textToPDF() {
              if ( app.documents.length == 0 ) { return; }
              var doc, csvFile, i, fileArray, opts;
              csvFile = File( '~/Desktop/ScriptTest/Test.csv' );
              if ( !csvFile.exists ) { return; }
              fileArray = readInCSV( csvFile );
              doc = app.activeDocument;
              opts = new PDFSaveOptions();
              opts.pDFPreset = '[Press Quality]';
              // Here we loop the main array
              for ( i = 0; i < fileArray.length; i++ ) {
                        // Here we get the second item of sub array i
                        doc.textFrames.getByName( 'DWG' ).contents = fileArray[i].[1];
                        // Here we get the first item of sub array i
                        doc.saveAs( File( fileArray[i].[0] ), opts );
    function readInCSV( fileObj ) {
              var fileArray, thisLine, csvArray;
              fileArray =[];
              fileObj.open( 'r' );
              while( !fileObj.eof ) {
                        thisLine = fileObj.readln();
                        csvArray = thisLine.split( ',' );
                        fileArray.push( csvArray );
              fileObj.close();
              return fileArray;
    I haven't tested it but it should be close…?

  • Rename an XML tag using javascript

    Dear adobe experts,
    I have a requirement to rename XML tags, in the interface for an adobe form, using javascript.
    the XML looks like this:
    <ELEMENT>
         <DATA>
              <ROW_IID>0</ROW_IID>
              <PARENT>0</PARENT>
              <CHILD>0</CHILD>
         </DATA>
         <DATA>
              <ROW_IID>1</ROW_IID>
              <PARENT>0</PARENT>
              <CHILD>0</CHILD>
         </DATA>
    </ELEMENT>
    and the result should look something like this:
    <ELEMENT>
         <CHAIR>
              <ROW_IID>0</ROW_IID>
              <PARENT>0</PARENT>
              <CHILD>0</CHILD>
         </CHAIR>
         <TABLE>
              <ROW_IID>0</ROW_IID>
              <PARENT>0</PARENT>
              <CHILD>0</CHILD>
         </TABLE>
    </ELEMENT>
    Is this possible and how can I do this? I was hoping that something like renameNode() (for instance) is also possible in the javascript set for adobe forms.
    If it's not possible I'm going to have to create new nodes, put the data from the existing node in the new node and remove the original node. This will be a lot more work and just renaming is easier :-).
    Kind regards,
    Niels

    Hi,
           Thanks a lot Jeff...
            I'm doing a huge program with lot of tasks. While doing that,my mind didn't strike to check if the tag is not already exist, then only to create new tag...  Thanks for all of the indesigner experts for their replies...
    I used the following codes with ur idea.
                        var renamewith = textbox1.text;
                        try
                            alert(app.activeDocument.xmlTags.item(renamewith).name);
                            if(app.activeDocument.xmlTags.item(renamewith).name)
                               var testTag = app.activeDocument.xmlTags.item(renamewith);
                        catch(e)
                            var testTag = app.activeDocument.xmlTags.add({name: renamewith});
    With Regards,
    Vel.

  • XML Processing with JavaScript for Safari

    Hi
    I've created an application which binds request and response data in XML format. I've written code in JavaScript for parsing the response data and build request based on the response XML. Here, I use functions like appendChild, cloneNode and all. My application runs without any problem on Mozilla FireFox and InternetExplorer. But I don't get it run in Safari 2.0. I get error in appendChild method in most cases. Please help me out in resolving this issue. Thanks in advance.

  • Combining a Flex FileInfo panel for Illustrator with an Illustrator Javascript

    I've got an Illustrator script (Javascript) that writes XMP based on the content of the artwork, but the script has to be manually triggered. I've got a custom FileInfo panel (built with Flex/AS3) to help me edit the XMP once stored.
    I'd like to combine the two, so the Script fires whenever the FileInfo panel opens.
    I can't do the DOM scripting directly in AS3, can I? I think that Illustrator is only open to Javascript, VB, and AppleScript. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
    Does anyone have any ideas how to call the javascript in the Scripts folder from an event in the FileInfo panel's SWF, and pass arguements back and forth? I've seen it done on webpages, but only when both the SWF  and javascript are on the same HTML page.
    Thanks

    Hi Hui
    Well, sort of, although I've made a bit more progress now and the events part seems to be working.
    I originally thought that fPPLib was specifically for Flex/Flash but I now realise that it is the main PlugPlug interface (which now includes HTML5 panels - right?)
    I think what I really need is HTML5 panels 101 (for Illustrator). The exmples in this forum are InDesign specific and all the c++ libraries are different. Also nothing I've seen so far shows how to make an extension work from within Illustrator's menus (as opposed to just from Window->Extensions).
    I have a plugin which requires input parameters from the user.
    What I am trying to do is.
    1) Create an HTML5 extension panel which will collect values from the user.
    2) Attach that panel (or is it a modal dialog) to say Object->Filters in the main Illustrator menu
    3) Have that panel load previous plugin parameters (*from the current session)
    4) Validate the user values in the panel.
    5) Make the panel communicate those values to the plugin
    6) Show/Hide the panel as required (i.e. open it from a menu item, close it when done).
    Also, in the original flash panel which I am trying to adapt, there is a lot of ActionScript in the mxml file.
    Where does all that go now? Is that what ExtendScript is for (and if so are there some useful tutorials on it anywhere?)
    I know that is a lot of questions. Apologies - I'm new to this and impatient to make some real progress.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Scripting objects in Illustrator - JavaScript

    Hi i am new to use Javascript in Illustrator.
    I can create new layers easy :-)
    but i like to select objects with a specific fillcolor
    All those objects should be moves to a specific layer
    And have an other fillcolor.
    Is this possible with JavaScript
    if yes HOW
    Thanks

    Firstly to answer your question… Yes this is all possible using JavaScript… A tip for a scripting new comer… Don't confuse script with the GUI there is NO need to select objects in order to move or change them… It's generally better NOT too and only deal with selection when you want user defined input… It is far less simple with script you will need to check every item in the document and if it's color matches a set of values move it else leave where it is… Don't forget when you move objects from one container to another you may have to account for the order reversing…
