XMLGregorianCalendar question - newbie

Hello experts,
I have a question regards to an abstract class called XMLGregorianCalendar. I have a class called UserService and has a method called setBirthday. However, the method says that the parameter must be in XMLGregorianCalendar. How can I do that? Any code snippets? By the way, the birthday is from a JSP where in I requested three parameters year, month and day.

Sync question (Newbie warning)

Hi,
I have a small question regarding pacman. I installed from [unsupported] rtorrent (rs_rtorrent) and libtorrent (librtorrent) since the packages in the [community] are not up to date (I need the bleeding edge because of some stupid torrent site). I have now few questions:
1) Let's say the packages in [community] got updated for even a newer version, since I don't have them installed I would get no notification, right?
2) Even if the packages in [unsupported] got updated I would still get no notification since I only have the .pkg on my own machine without any sync to a central database.
What is the most simple way (newbie-wise) to keep package in [unsupported] updated, other than repeatedly checking the rtorrent site/AUR site (through web browser) for updates? Can pacman do this for me?

Airport question (newbie)

hi. i hope this question doesn't sound too naive. i have two macs in the house. one in the basement and one in my son's room. i want to be able to let my son go online (we are both wireless but i haven't yet installed his) but i also want to be able to monitor his usage without having to go into his room every day .is there a way for us to "share" the network so that when either of us logs on we see the history of either imac? i am not trying to "spy" - he knows and agrees to this......just wondering iof its possible...is this what airport can do?.......any help would be appreciated....thanks so much.....Larry

The best solution is to use a wireless router which offers a logging feature. Then periodically check the logs on the router.

Resolution, audio, alpha channel, and backup questions (newbie)

Hello!
Well, after a few weeks of fidgeting around with FCE, I've come up with quite a few questions:
Image/Audio questions
A. What is the best still image size for import to a NTSC DV movie? Is it the 720x480 px (3:2 aspect ratio) standard of the DV image, or the 4:3 ratio of your generic CRT TV?
I know it depends on pan/zoom. This brings up the next question:
B. I have a still image - literally a blue and black two-color image - that I'd like to zoom. It will start out with a very close shot - and zoom out until it takes up around 10% of the screen. The ending frame (the DV size) will be about 10-12 times smaller than the original image. Does this mean that I should make the original 10-12 times bigger (in both directions) than a DV frame?
This clip is essentially an imitation of the opening of the movie "Home Alone", where the screen begins blue, and as it zooms out, you see it's a stylized house, which zooms out to a tiny size. That's essentially the effect I'm going for.
Audio/Video sync issue
C. Some of the clips I've imported from old iMovie projects are a little out of sync. It's not a conversion issue, but an issue with bad editing on my part . So, I have a still image that's about 1.5 seconds too short - it cuts to the next still, which is 1.5 seconds too long. I've added edit points at both ends of the out-of-sync clip, so that I have a 1.5 second clip, with its own audio and video.
The problem is that the audio is perfect, but the video is bad. So, I need to replace the video, without changing the audio. How is this done?
D. Sometimes, I'll end up with either audio or video that's not quite right after importing a movie. However, FCE locks them together. Is there a way to unlock them so that I can change either? Essentially, is there a way to change the audio and video from one clip into two seperate clips?
E. Can I export a single clip or two only? (eg - the same as the "Share selected clips only" check box the iMovie's share menu)
Alpha channel/marquee question:
In one idea I had for this short, I have a still image (and some video) where I'd like to highlight a small area in one part of the image. In one part, it's a small object in the background that I'm highlighting. If you've seen a documentary where they have a group photo, and highlight the face of one particular person, that's the effect I'm going for.
I've made some Photoshop images that can achieve this effect - using a transparent background, a black top layer (at ~40-80% opacity), and an eliptical marquee for the highlighted portion. I then import it, and fine tune the location/size. It works, but it takes a lot of time to talor each shot. Is there some way to do this IN Final Cut Express? A filter perhaps?
In addition: (alpha-video)
is there a way to turn part of a video into an alpha channel, so that it's transparent in the final movie? It's not so much a solid color (as the bluescreen/chroma key technique would need), but more of background. For example, I would like to take some footage of my family walking in front of trees, remove the background, and place an entirely different video/still in. Is that possible?
Backup: FInal question:
I have my source media organized fairly well on my external drive. However, if my drive should die, It would be incredibly tedius to re-link all the files. (I do have a fairly current backup of the external files). Not to mention finding the orignal capture files, re-timing the project, and so on. The project file itself is probably the easiest to back up.
So, how do you back up EVERYTHING? Some projects may have hundreds of files, all over my external drive. Is there some easy way to back up all the files into a single place, like a single folder or DVD, so that if my drive should fail, all the files are in one spot?
I can export them back to a miniDV tape, but I don't have that many, plus they're $5 a pop. I can do this with Toast, but I'll likely end up missing some out-of-the-way files. If only .Mac's Backup had a Final Cut preset.....
I know that's a BUNCH of stuff up there, so if you can help with any of them, i'd be appreciative.

Bridge gallery and iWeb questions, newbie....

Hi All....
I have made myselve a page in iWeb but I´m not happy with the gallery-layout with thumpnails and small sized pictures, I would like my galleries to be scroll down type, OR just one picture at the time and nothing else, except "Next/previous" and a "Menu" sign, either in a good (>>>big pictures) size....
I have this morning realized that I can do that in Bridge, so I have made myselve a testgallery and uploaded to my site via Bridge, and I can see in Filezilla that it is there, but I can´t see it on my page, off course because there´s no link between the two of them, the question is, how do I make my page show the gallery....???
I haven´t been able to locate the testgallery on the web, as mentioned I can see in Filezilla that it is there somewhere, but how to find it out there I don´t know....

When you created your gallery did you publish the file to a folder? And was one of the files in that folder named index.htm or html? Make sure the gallery works correctly by opening the index.html file with your browser from the gallery copy on your hard drive.
Then upload to the root directory of your account on the server. The url would be something like this: http://www.easerfoto.dk/Folder_name/index.html.
Put that URL in the iFrame code below in an HTML snippet. The iFrame code in the snippet would look like this:

Simple JSP question (newbie)

firstly I hope this is the right place to post this question, if not, please accept my apologies,
I am putting together my first set of JSP pages with Tomcat, and so far everything is going very well, but I am having one small problem.
I have 1 JSP page at the moment, and that in turn uses 1 JavaBean thing bit of code to do something.
The problem I am having is passing an integer variable from my JSP page to my JavaBean page, I can't seem to find the right syntax for it. The following code (from the JSP page) will make this ten times clearer...

You can see this is a super-simple problem :)
... but my if it isn't becoming frustrating :)

Updating SAP Questions - Newbie Need Some Direction

I have some questions on updating SAP systems.
We went live on SAP back in May and we have not really updated our systems since we did the initial installation in January. (They wanted a stable environment for testing/config). But I would like to start updating SAP before it gets too out of data and become difficult to update.
We are running a ECC 6.0 system on Windows 2003 x64 servers with SQL 2005 databases.
They way I see it, there are 3 areas I need to update:
1.)     The OS and Database (Microsoft Service Packs and Patches)
2.)     The SAP kernel
3.)     SAP support packages
What is the best way to approach this? Are my steps even correct?
I would just appreciate some input on how to approach updating SAP. I know that lots of testing will be necessary after each update.

I think you are looking for applying support packs . SAP usually release Support pack stacks every quarter, So you can go by the latest stack or one behind. SAP prefer to go by stacks now and not by individual packs.
You can get this information from

Procedure will be
1) Upgrade SAP Kernel
2) Update SPAM/SAINT to latest level.
3) Apply Support packs using SPAM.
If you have dual stack , update Java components using JSPAM , Now you can upgrade your Kernel using JSPAM ( In case you have dual stack ) .
Before doing Support packs , Make sure you read all notes related to Know issues/problem with your release and also make sure you have a valid back up. So if something go wrong you can always restore

ESB general question. (newb)

Hi all :)
Our сompany has for about 30 branch offices, each brach has it's own web service (ASP.NET) with about 40 operations. But all they has similar interfase (WSDL). Our project goal is to create single entry point for corporate web services.
The question: is this problem can be solved by using GlassfishESB + Netbeans IDE (BPEL module, Composite Application)?
Is there any real life examples of such solutions?

Yes, That is easily possible with Glassfish ESB. Even i have done similar orchestration with 23 Web services.
For your implementation you have to decide what will be the input/output for this orchestration. Basically Orchestration needs all the inputs at one time for the different web services. orchestration also have possiblities to condition based request.

IPhone questions - Newbie

I am looking at an iphone but have heard rmours of the iphone2 in July? Any word on this and what would be the updated features?
Secondly I just wanted to check that as I am on 02 i can port my number from a PAYG over to contract on 02 with iphone - I was told this was all done through itunes? is that correct?
Also I can get on internet with the iphone anywhere that there is a 02 signal? I thought it had to be a wi-fi spot?
Whats the iphone like for google searching and replying to emails? is it useful for this? or a bit of a gimmick and you need to be back at a computer to do mails?

Hmm. Your question looks like it should have been posted to the SQL/PLSQL forum, or the Technology-Windows-ODBC forum, but I'll try to answer your question anyway.
If you use the Oracle ODBC driver, your procedure needs to return a ref cursor. If you use the Microsoft ODBC driver, you need to return mutliple arrays and synthesis a record set with some special syntax . . .

Picture resolution question - newbie

Hello,
I am making a 10 feet by 10 feet (8640 x 8640 pixels) panel. I am using a stock photo that is 4360 x 2912 pixels. I will of course make the picture bigger to fit the panel. My question is: How will the picture look when I have the panel printed at a professional printer? Will it be pixelated?

10 feet by 10 feet is one thing. 8640 pixels is another and they have nothing to do with one another.

"300 dpi" is incorrect. Image resolution is measured in ppi for Pixels Per Inch. But 300 ppi is also incorrect because the output size is not 14.6 x 9.7 inches, but 120 x 120 inches. Assuming you crop off some of the sides, the final image resolution will be 24.26 ppi. That's pretty low for your purposes. Try to get a higher resolution source. If you can't, then you should explore plug-ins for Photoshop that resample to higher resolution. Genuine Fractals is the one I am familiar with.

Simple file i/o script question (newbie)

OK - I'm going brain dead. I'm new to applescript and my script works great except for one piece. I need to keep a count of how many iterations my script does each time I use it, so my thought was to have a file called serial.txt that starts with a value of 0. The script would open this file and set a variable to its value (say iterationnum). Upon each iteration within the script it would increment iterationnum. Upon script completetion, it would replace the value in serial.txt with the new value of the variable iterationnum and close the file. Next time I run the script, the value of iterationnum would continue where I left off. Iternationnum could go as high as 100,000 or so.
it's simple enough but I can't seem to get the i/o syntax correct. Would one of you seasoned gurus be kind enough to post an example of this?

Flash Animation Question: Newbie

How do you animate only the gradient of an object? Let's say
you create a Square window and want a sunset in the background by
using a radial gradient effect, it can be achieved, then I want to
only move the gradient from one side of the object to the other and
have it fill in the movement with a motion tweed.
So, I made the square and gradient, converted to a symbol,
reapplied it at a different keyframe, separated the shape and
gradient again, moved it, and applied the motion tweed to the first
frame. It doesn't move smoothly, just shows it in a new spot on the
new keyframe. Suggestions?

Use a shape tween. Don't convert to a symbol.

Lightroom 3 catalog question (newbie)

I have been using bridge but recently installed lightroom 3. I wish to make one overall catalog containing all the images in my Images folder,a large C drive folder with numerous sub-folders. I restarted LR with alt key down (PC) and specified this folder. Now LR appears to be importing the same images repeatedly. Is this normal?

No, it is not normal.
I cannot figure out how you may have achieved the effect.
But in order to savely arrive at your objective stated in your opening post, I would suggest you start all over again, like this:
Just open Lightroom normally, then go to menu File-New catalog, specify your own meaningful name (e.g. "birdgeek LR master catalog") and point to where you want the new catalog to be saved. LR will relaunch with this new catalog.
Then you can specify basic catalog settings in the menu Edit-Catalog settings.
Then you import all your images ("Add") by pointing to the root folder where all your pictures to include are stored. On a PC this might be C:\Users\[your windows user name]\Pictures.
Then leave LR alone for quite a while, depending on the number of files.
LR will leave your images where they are, but create the thumbnails inside its database and render the previews.

Keychain basic questions- newb

Within the next couple of months I will be a switcher and get an iMac.
I have seen comments about the keychain but couldn't find a good description for what the keychain is or does? Can someone enlighten me? Is there a resource on apple.com that describes it? Is it more than a website remembering your password for different sites? Do you still need to remember or your different passwords?
I have heard podcasts mention password management programs, like 1password. Related to managing passwords do programs like these do more than the keychain function or is there redundancy?
