Xorg Segfaulting on viewing console (ctl+alt+f1) after nvidia upgrade

I upgraded nvidia and nvidia-utils yesterday to the current nvidia-utils 169.09-2 and nvidia-utils 169.09-1 versions respectively.  Pacman complained about the presence of  /usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1, so I followed the advice here (http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-gen … 16508.html) and did a -Sf installation.  After that the installation and restart (I upgraded the kernel at the same time), went smoothly.
I run icewm, but boot to the console and start X manually.  I tend to drop back into the console (ctl+alt+f1) fairly regularly.  The X-server has now begun to catch Sig 11 and segfault  (unpredictably), when I go to the console.  It has happened three times today - the Xorg log terminates with :
Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80baf4e]
1: [0xb7f0f420]
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting
Any ideas please?

I'm posting here the setup of my /usr/lib/xorg/modules so you guys can see if there's a difference from removing the old package on the update or deleting the files by hand.

  • OSD Exits to Ctl-Alt-Del after Reboot from Software Update, leaves Clients in provisioning mode

    We are seeing a problem where the Windows 7 SP1 OSD wrongly exits to the Ctl-Alt-Del screen:  This problem is occuring with about %25 of our Newly Imaged PCs during the Software Updates step of the Task Sequence (of which there is about 9

    I have checked the logs based on other forum suggestions I can say the following:
    -Network adapter is getting valid address;
    -I do not have a step for "Install Roles and Features";
    -I can apply registry changes for each machine to take them out of Provisioning mode, and after that I dont have any problems - this is far from the solution that I hope for.

    Any update on this as I am struggling with this issue for the past few days ?
    Our image was built last year so when I want to recreate it, it has to do 150 updates. We don't have WSUS updates into SCCM so I had to use a wsf script to get the updates from our WSUS server.
    If I image the computer without doing the updates and do them manually by running the script here is what happens :
    1st execution of the script : 137 updates installed and a reboot is required
    I manually reboot
    2nd execution of the script : 13 updates installed and a reboot is required
    I manually reboot
    3rd execution of the script : 4 updates installed
    I manually reboot
    4th execution of the script : no updates required.
    If I only do 1 execution of the script in my TS : it works fine, it installs the 137 updates but then when the PC is done imaging, it still needs the 13+4 other updates which I don't really like.
    At first, I tried adding this in my TS:
    WSUS 1/3
    System restart (triggered by the TS)
    WSUS 2/3
    System restart (triggered by the TS)
    WSUS 3/3
    System restart (triggered by the TS)
    This stops at step #2, I see it do the 137 updates and then when it reboots, it goes into provisioning mode and doesn't continue. Looks like there is an issue with the reboot so...
    I have tried removing the reboot as follows
    WSUS 1/3
    WSUS 2/3
    WSUS 3/3
    This installs the 137 updates in step #1 and downloads the 13 updates in step 2 and 3 but log file says a reboot is required to install them. The TS then continues but once it meets a System restart triggered by the TS, it doesn't resume the TS and goes
    also in provisionning mode.
    Any idea on why it goes into provisioning mode after installing the updates ? To me, it looks like there is a probably with the state that WSUS puts the computer in, like it is pending reboot but the System restart by the TS doesn't seem to work when trying
    the reboot ?
    Thanks!!!!

  • Cannot Ctrl+Alt+F1 after nvidia-173xx update

    I have recently discovered that I cannot switch into "terminal mode" with the latest nvidia-173xx drivers (nvidia-173xx-173.14.25-1 and nvidia-173-xx-utils-173.14.25-1). Whenever I do Ctrl+Alt+Fn, the screen goes black with no terminal prompt. Then the only thing to do is Ctrl+Alt+F8 (F8 instead of F7, as it used to be) to go back to the X11 session.
    This happens also if I logout from KDE and select "Console login" from within the KDM menu: the screen just goes black (after flickering a bit): in this case the only solution is to wait for KDM to kick in and display the (GUI) login screen.
    An other thing I discovered is that, when I shutdown/restart the computer and the X11 session is terminated, the screen goes back to terminal mode but the display (and all those messages about services going down) is dimmed down.
    The temporary solution for me is to go back to the previous version: nvidia-173xx-173.14.22-4 and nvidia-173-xx-utils-173.14.22-4. Here everything is fine (going to console mode, screen during shutdown, etc.)

    I wasn't able to find any relevant messages in Xorg.log.  Another piece of information that may be relevant: the framebuffer resolution is set to "vga=773" in GRUB (which, I think, automatically disables KMS).
    I'd rather be able to upgrade my nvidia driver in the future. Have anyone experienced the same problem? Is there any workaround it?
    Thank you very much.
    [Edit] I forgot: I am on i686, the monitor is an LCD widescreen and the nvidia card is an old one: FX 5200 [/Edit]

    Hey, I can confirm this, albeit with a different driver.
    I have upgraded nvidia drivers from 190.56 to 195.36 and I can't switch back into console once X is started. The boot output is printed correctly though.
    There is also another issue: If I don't set vga= in the boot options, my boot output hangs at "Waiting for udev uevents to be processed [busy]" (see: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=92189).
    .After a while X will start, even without vga= parameter.
    The problem definitely doesn't exist with 190.56...
    Maybe time for a bug report to NVIDIA?
    Problem also stayed even if I exchanged vesafb for uvesafb.
    Cheers
    Bastian

  • Firefox wont start or load but when I press ctl, alt, delete I see it running?

    I upgraded Firefox. I worked for one night, the next night When I tried to open it it didnt work. I press ctl alt delete and noticed that it was running in the background but no window... IE and Chrome works fine... I do have internet.
    I ran virus scans with no problems what so ever. Ran malwarebites and no issues. I have the windows firefall and disabaled it to see if maybe thats the problem, I also checked to see if Firefox had permission to pass the firewall and those were no issues.
    Any Ideas.. please help.

    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • [SOLVED] Xorg 1.9 + qt 4.7 + nvidia + xinerama = Xorg segfault

    Hi everyone,
    I'm experiencing a perfectly reproducible (even with a completely fresh Arch install) Xorg segfault with a certain constellation.
    When using the latest binary nvidia drivers (works with the 260 beta also), dragging the mouse pointer within a qt window (vlc, smplayer, skype, qtconfig) crashes Xorg with a segfault when using a Xinerama configuration. Twinview or single screen works fine however.
    Xinerama configuration (crashing): http://pastebin.com/3VdVZqkU
    Twinview configuration (works): http://pastebin.com/QjL4Nibg
    Xorg log when crashing: http://pastebin.com/qby9uSxN
    Can anyone confirm this?

    Just to do some more analysis on this, I tried to compare the sources between the old working xorg-server that Arch packaged (version 1.8.1.902, found at http://www.x.org/releases/individual/xserver/ and the latest 1.9 xorg release that Arch uses (version 1.9.0, found at the same aforementioned URL).
    In version 1.8.1.902, the file Xext/panoramiXprocs.c has this version of the critical if-statement that Ochi originally mentioned:
    if((pDst == WindowTable[0]) ||
    (pDst->drawable.id == savedScreenInfo[0].wid))
    rep.dstX += panoramiXdataPtr[0].x;
    rep.dstY += panoramiXdataPtr[0].y;
    Anyway, I got the git repo to see which commit decided to change pDst to pWin in that second OR condition.
    git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver
    git log -p Xext/panoramiXprocs.c
    And found this commit: 80b5d3a3264d2c5167e5ac85a3b04af0f89cece1 which did the change. You can use
    git show 80b5d3a3264d2c5167e5ac85a3b04af0f89cece1
    to see the commit's full diff. That commit was a big commit that changed lots of things in many files. Here is the portion that concerns our discussion (see the very bottom part)):

    Author: Jamey Sharp <[email protected]>
    Date: Fri May 21 23:13:51 2010 -0700
    Move each screen's screensaver data into ScreenRec.
    Most references to the savedScreenInfo array already had the
    corresponding screen pointer handy, which meant they usually looked like
    "savedScreenInfo[pScreen->myNum]". Adding a field to ScreenRec instead
    of keeping this information in a parallel array simplifies those
    expressions, and eliminates a MAXSCREENS-sized array.
    Since dix uses this data, a screen private entry isn't appropriate.

    So I will send the developers an email and simply ask him if he meant to change that pDst to pWin in Xext/panoramiX.c, or if it was a copy/paste error (seems like it is). I'll report back here afterwards.

  • New T400 ctl-alt-del not working

    I just a new T400. It has happened twice that when I try to enter back from blocked screen/standby using the ctl-alt-del it does not work (as if the keybord was desconected... nothing happens). I have to force power off and then it works.

    If I activate this, will the user receive a popup when deploying some apps
    (bundles) ?

    inserted windows disc
    ctl alt delete
    press the blue button
    press f12
    selected the top option, 2: atapi cdo: hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-u20n-(s2)

    Does anyone have any advice?  It is entirely likely that I have the wrong windows CD.
    I have ltd experience with software, so the more simple the instructions the better.

    Hello,
    I have been reading up on this error, and found two possible solutions:
    Boot the computer from a Windows 7 installation disc, and select the "Startup Computer" from System Recovery Options to automatically fix the compressed files.
    Remove the hard disk drive from the ThinkPad and connect it to another computer running Windows 7 as a secondary hard disk drive.  It could be connected via a USB to SATA cable, plugged into one of the internal SATA connectors, and so forth—the type of connection does not matter as long as it's not the primary boot drive.  Boot the system as you normally would, open My Computer, right-click on the drive, select Properties from the popup context menu, and on the General tab, uncheck the "Compress this drive to save disk space" option.  It may take a while to run, especially over a USB connection.
    Hopefully, ione of those will get you up and running without having to reformat the hard disk drive.
    Regards,
    Aryeh Goretsky

    Solved, it was really stupid. For some reason my Multilib repo got disable in the pacman config. So the 32bit nvidia drivers were old...

    Yeah, sorry I didn't notice this post sooner, or I could have saved you some trouble shooting.
    After testing and discussion on NVIDIA forums with someone else having the same problem, we realized that it is apparently a problem with any Xorg 1.7 release using Xinerama with a monitor positioned Left of another display.
    The person I was talking to said he bugged it, and rearranged his monitors right of.  I downgraded to xorg 1.6 and haven't given it too much though since.  I should probably follow up on that and submit a bug to xorg or something...  or you are welcome to!
    Works great with Xinerama turned off, which is actually a fine option for me since I don't tend to move windows between displays, except I am using Xinerama to work around an xmonad bug in handling multiple non-Xinerama displays.  I would have never caught it if I hadn't tried turning Xin on to fix the xmonad issue right before the 1.7 upgrade and gotten curious why my setup started going crazy (since I have a monitor with two monitors to the left of it)..
    One thing that also works is making your left most monitor screen 0 and setting the other two monitors to be RightOf it, or at least that worked for me.  Unfortunately, my left most monitor is a 46 inch tv that is often turned off or on a different input, so I can't really have it being screen 0.

    Afterwards, in just 1 workstation, Crystal Reports layouts have Crystal Report Windows Forms Viewer error I attach.
    Before the upgrade this error did not happen.
    No permissions or authorizations were changed  in the workstation.
    The Crystal Reports layouts remain working fine in server and in the other workstations.
    In the workstation following are installed:
    - Operating System Windows 7;
    - Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5;
    - SAP Crystal Reports runtime engine for. NET Framework;
    - Crystal Report 2008 Runtime SP6;
    - Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client.
    All, but the operating system, are equal to the other workstations.
    User has edit access to SAP folders, temp and access to the attach path.
    We already uninstalled SAP client and client agent and re-installed it but with no avail.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,
    Pedro Mariano

  • Viewing print thumbnail only works after a TAB in adobe reader X

    Hello,
    Viewing print thumbnail only works after a TAB in adobe reader x.
    In adobe reader 9 when you go to a specified page (the red circle in the screenshot), the example on the right site directly go´s to that page,
    In adobe reader x when you go to a specified page nothing happend in the example, when you then use the TAB then de example wil go to the specified page.
    Is this a incident in Adobe Reader X ?

    PDF files have to be specially enabled for you to save the contents. It appears the old version of these files had this capability, but the new version does not. Without Acrobat you will be unable to save the files. If these are truly government files, you can try going to the government's website and see if you can download a copy that will allow you to save the form field data.

  • Does anyone know how to get my email to download pictures?  I was able to view pictures in my email before I upgraded to iOS 7.  I have allow remote pictures turned on in my settings.

    I was able to view pictures in my email before I upgraded to iOS 7.  I have allow remote pictures turned on in my settings.  I loved Apple until this last upgrade.  It used to be an intuitively designed product.  I hate it now.  If they don't make it easier for older users to use again, this will be the last Apple product I every purchase.

    Welcome to AD!
    I have a regular post for the top 3 or 4 fixes for that 9808 error. Obviously you are going to skip #1, since you've already tried it. Let me know how you get on with the next 2.
    The top 3 fixes to itunes error 9808 seem to be
    1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced, make sure that SSL 3.0 is checked and TLS 1.0 is checked. Also under Security make sure that the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” is unchecked. Then click ok and fire up iTunes.
    2) The culprit was Norton. The users are set up as Admin and Standard. I have Parental Controls turned on in both Vista as well as Norton. Admin users had no problems connecting to iTunes. Standard users would get the error. I had to go to Norton’s Personal Firewall and add the program “iTunes Helper.exe” and set the option to “Allowed” (”iTunes.exe should already be in the Allowed category.) in order for the standard users to be able to connect.
    3) close iTunes if you have it open right now. Then go to C:/Documents and Settings/username/Local Settings/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes. Delete or cut the preferences.xml file which contains your iTunes preferences. Then go to C:/Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes and delete or move the preferences.xml file. For Mac users, there is only one file you must delete or move a to a new location and is located at User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.itunes.plist. Restart iTunes and it will recreate those two (or one) files with the default settings. Feel free to set your preferences back to what they were and then connect to the iTunes store and enjoy!
    And #4, see if you can get into the iTS from a different windows admin account on the same PC.

  • Firefox 3.6.3 segfaults between 10 seconds and 1 minute after starting

    Yesterday, some of my addons updated (I can't remember which). Everything was fine until about an hour ago firefox segfaulted (with three windows and ~90 tabs it does this occasionally).
    Now, firefox segfaults between 10 seconds and 1 minute after starting to load. Even with no restored session - just the moz homepage as the single tab, even in safemode.
    I'm using firefox 3.6.3 on an AMD-64 machine running Kubuntu Jaunty (9.04) KDE3 version.
    == Troubleshooting information ==
    I don't know how to find all but includes past modern theme, googlebar, en.gb dictionary (recently installed), session manager, tab mix plus, character identifier, flash and realplayer plugins, super drag and go (I think), add bookmark here (possibly)

    Going back to a profile backup from two days ago has seemingly worked, implying that the problem was the new en-GB language pack so I'll have find out where to report a bug on that.
    This can be marked as solved now by anyone who knows how.

  • Can't view pdf files using safari after upgrading 10.5.8 to  10.6.5

    I noticed that right after I upgraded from Leopard 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6.5, I no longer could view any pdf's I would click on unless I used "control click" option to download the file/pdf. Before upgrading all I had to do was click on a pdf link and it opened up automatically in a new window. Now all I get a black screen unless I "control click"
    I am thankful that I saw in the discussion area that I at least have a way to view it but do not understand why upgrading to 10.6.5 changed the way I use to be able to open/view pdf files.
    Thanks

    Hi keyag
    I suspect you've an adobe pdf viewer plugin that requires safari to run in 32 bit mode. Either remove it from HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ & restart Safari; or select Safari in Applications, do a File-Get Info - and check the 32 bit box, again restarting Safari.
    ... do not understand why upgrading to 10.6.5 changed ...
    probably because 10.6.x runs Safari as a 64 bit process by default, and the plugin won't work that way. Maybe there's an update for it (assuming the plugin guess is correct )

  • The "File Edit View Window Help" menu disappears after opening Adobe Acrobat X Standard

    After installing Adobe Acrobat X Standard, when I run the program the "File Edit View Window Help" menu is visible for only a brief second then disappears.  I tried to press F11 or other functions keys to bring it back.  I also installed Adobe Acrobat X Pro which I also have a license for and it would do the exact same thing. Reinstalling the programs did not seem to resolve the problem.  Is there an issue inside the registry?

    Thank you for your comment.  However, F9 does not seem to work.
    When I press F9, the menu bar appears but the words "File Edit View Window Help" are still missing.
    When I press F9 again the menu bar will close.
    This is a screen capture before the words "File Edit View Window Help" disappear.  After only about a second they are gone.
