Xorg + xf86-video-intel lags with compiz / high cpu usage without it

I have recently noticed that my X server lags. It happens approximately once per second (it's fairly regular) and it can be easily observed when watching movies, dragging windows or rotating cube. Screen just hangs for some milliseconds. Lags are bigger and happens more often when many windows are opened.
Even worse things happen when I'm _not_ running compiz. X's cpu usage spikes permanently up to 30-40% and lags are even more noticable.
My hardware:
Laptop with Intel GMA 950
Configuration
I tried some different xorg.confs but it seems to be irrevelant. It happens even on plain conf created by 'Xorg -configure'
xorg-server 1.5.3-3
mesa 7.2-1
xf86-video-intel 2.4.3-1
kernel26 2.6.27.8-1
I also tried downgrading these packages to
xorg-server 1.4.2-2
mesa 7.0.3-3
xf86-video-intel 2.3.2-1
kernel26 2.6.27-1
and it seems to resolve cpu usage problem but not the lags.
Does anybody know what might cause these lags? It's really annoying.

It turned out that color depth was the issue. I think that 24bit is too big for my graphics card and compiz (although I remember that i810+24bit+compiz worked fine).
So changing DefaultDepth in xorg.conf to 16 fixed the problem. Is there any other way to workaround this without decreasing color depth?

  • Video Streaming - glitchy playback and high CPU usage

    Hi,
    I'm running a mid 2007 macbook with OSX 10.5.8, and I am experiencing issues playing back video from a large number of websites. Specifically BBC iPlayer, and other OD sites, but others too. HTML5 playback seems to be okay.
    I tried changing from Safari to Chrome, and this seemed to make no difference, and even though I tend to run a lots of programs and have lots of tabs open, I get this issue when I'm not running anything else.
    When I look at my CPU usage, its constantly running at 80% when the video is running fine. Then it leaps to 100%, and the video fails and get stuck. Sometimes continuing the audio, but with the image frozen. I think the computer gets too hot, and slows the CPU speed down, resulting in the glitches.
    I'm pretty certain my problem lies with Flash. As when looking at activity monitor, this is the process that leaps into action and drains my CPU when video is playing. I'm currently using the latest versions of everything. My computer should be fast enough to playback these (admittedly very compressed) formats without really struggling. So something must be wrong in software somewhere!
    If anybody has come across this issue, and found a solution, it would be great to hear it!
    Thanks in advance.
    Jamie

    The Adobe web site has recent versions of Flash player and Shockwave player;
    among them, are ones for certain web browsers as well as specific OS X system
    versions. As in PPC or Intel-based Mac systems of a certain build number range.
    And the download package for each product includes an Uninstaller so the old
    player may be removed first, before installing the newer one. Keep in mind, the
    most recent players they have may not work with your older OS X system, so
    be sure to read and look around. I've found several versions, including ones that
    do OK for my G4 computers running 10.4.11 and 10.5.8.
    The older computers have different possible issues, but yours is new enough to
    not have graphic processor or other hardware limits increasingly PPC-Macs have.
    And then with streaming content and changes in software/hardware, some factors
    are beyond the reach of older computers, when left behind due to a new direction.
    You computer may also be a candidate for some general & preventative maintenance;
    depending on how it is used, how often it sees huge file transfers and other variables.
    My computers can stay on (including sleep) for over 170 days and not act oddly. There
    are things that can improve by simply restarting the computer; or start in SafeBoot to
    then run Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions' to alleviate some basic glitch or issue.
    If specific graphic content related 'cures' don't make much difference, consider the
    whole computer approach for general health to make it work the best it can; then any
    other causes of slowness may be more pointedly addressed, by selective direct means.
    The specifications of your computer indicate it should be able to handle OS X 10.6.6;
    but a direct upgrade is not recommended unless the existing issue is investigated.
    There may be underlying hard disk drive issues or other logical errors behind troubles.
    Are there any Console logs relating to actions the system takes while processing video?
    They'd be listed by time/date and could show other things going on, outside of Flash
    players or compromised basic computer functions that appear now only under stress.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • High CPU usage without any application running on the laptop

    Hi ,
    I saw some earlier posts as well but I am not sure if anything is helping me. I have a HP Pavilian Dv6. Its with me for now since 2009 or so. It was all running very well till last Nov - Dec 2013 timeframe. I had many bulky work done on the laptp like video cutting editing , along with audio edits , fairly well. I used it mostly for videos and no games though.
    Since Nov - Dec 2014, all the videos started slowing down, extremely jerky, and not catching up with the audio. Slowly the problem became worse . After 10 mins of video it just stopped and hanged. It did it with every site and any format of video including videos on my C Drive. I earlier tried a lot of things, playing around with flash player thinking that's the culprit. Did not help. Browsers changed, Mozilla, internet explorer , Chrome, everything no change. Then till around last week, I tried tested, uninstalled a lot of programs, also did Microsoft system restore and seen , the CPU continously behaved reaching to its 100% peak and the videos getting shot down. Just no change. Last week , I got desperate and finally reformatted my hard drive and did a factory restore on the laptop. IT DID NOT HELP !! The laptop behaved really like a good puppy for a few days , Youtube and what not and again since yesterday it has been shot down ! No videos will run. What's more even a DVD video is not running , nothing on a browser a simple DVD player DVD play is not running. Jerky videos and hanging issues.
    Everything boils dows to 100% CPU usage. Even if I am closing all my applications , it shows 'system' as the process using 90-100% CPU. Without any browser or even a notepad option open. There is also a prgram 'dwm' which eats up the next big slot of CPU.
    I am really tired of this and not able to enjoy anything. Please suggest what could be the issue here and how can it be helped?

    Just to add the laptop is HP Pavilian DV6 , model Dv6t - 1300.

  • Why does xf86-video-intel conflicts xf86-video-i810?

    Hello,
    I have a question. Why conflicts xf86-video-intel the xf86-video-i810 driver? Yes I know that -intel is the follow-up, but are there also another (technical) reasons? The problem is that -intel doesn't work very good for me, but sometimes I need it to get a external monitor working. If both are installed it would be no problem to switch it in the xorg.conf, but installing around everytime is a bit annoying.
    I just wanted to ask why this is so and if this could be changed

  • Unusually high cpu usage with iMovie 6.0.3

    I'm having trouble with very high cpu-usage. Just the open imovie app is taking up about 50%, during playback it sometimes peaks over 100%! The project file is pretty big (about 30 gig), but that is mainly because of the amount of footage imported into it. The movie itself is about 25 minutes in length. There is some audio editing going on: some soundeffects, musicfiles (no drm-protection), audio commentary that i recorded within imovie. I know that imovie has trouble when there is a lot of audio/audio editing involved and this project is probably a little more complex than other stuff i did in imovie, but i never had such problems. i can hardly use playback anymore. I recently updated Quicktime to 7.6.4 and Perian to version 1.2.1. Any ideas what's going on or how to work around the problems? Since the movie is about 80% finished i don't really want to start all over again. Thanks in advance for your input!

    Hi Klaus1
    I have several plug-ins by cfx and the slick volumes 4, 6 8 and 10. I can post a list of all of them if you like. Up to now they never made any trouble, but you'll never know...
    The edit in the timeline is about 25 minutes long. But the project file contains captured dv-footage of about 2 hours, so that alone adds up to something like 26 GB. Then there are a few rendered effect-clips done with some of the plug-ins like stabilizing or color correction which also add to the 30 GB, as well as some audio-files (some music, my voice-over commentary). I emptied the trash several times while working on the movie. At this moment there are only a few MB of erased audio in it.
    It all sounds a bit like this is an insanely huge and complex project, but as i said, i have done projects like this in imovie without the massive cpu-usage. I'd like to continue to use imovie, but if this problem keeps coming up with future projects, i might as well take the step and switch to Final Cut Express.
    For now I will try your idea of exporting the movie as it is now and open it in a new project file.
    Thanks for your help and input so far!

  • Wake-On-Lan (WOL) after sleep causes high CPU usage

    Hi,
    I noticed a problem with constant high CPU usage on one of my cores.
    As much as 60% was used.
    The problem occures after I put the system to "sleep" (S3 state) and perform a WOL with a "magic packet".
    I discovered that ACPI.sys+0x1af44 thread was responsible (using sysinternals ProcessExplorer) under the System process.
    If i perform WOL while the machine was shut down everything works perfectly.
    My NIC is  "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" and I'm using the latest drivers.
    I discovered that if I disabled the option in Power Management for the device: "Allow this device to wake the computer", the CPU usage immediately went to normal (without restarting). But enabling it back the high CPU usage resumes. Performing
    another sleep and awaking the system with power button "resets" the CPU usage issue for "good". Until i WOL from sleep again ofcourse..
    I contacted the motherboard manufacturer of the problem but so far no real answer.
    I'm saddened because I need the WOL feature.
    I'm hoping somebody who has more insight in the behaviour of ACPI on W7 can answer my questions.

  • Google Earth Plugin and LabVIEW: High CPU usage when adding placemarks

    Hi,
    I posted this question on stackoverflow earlier this week but feel it might be better suited to the LabVIEW community specifically so I'm reposting here:
    I'm writing an application which uses the Google Earth Plugin to display events on the globe. Each event is a single point kml placemark with an icon which is a 3kb png file. Placemarks are uploaded to the plugin as they are received by the software. I am experiencing increasing CPU usage with the number of placemarks that are added.
    I have tested displaying a new placemark every second and running until the software running the plugin completely froze (graph attached). The GEPlugin (green trace) stopped responding (i.e. the globe did not respond to the mouse) at around 1200 placemarks added and CPU usage was at ~30%. When the software itself (red trace) froze the plugin was using around 50% CPU and ~3700 placemarks had been added). After the freeze, no new placemarks were added which caused the software to respond (but not the plugin) so I could clear all the placemarks. After the placemarks were cleared from the globe, the CPU usage of the plugin returned to around 5% CPU.
    So what I've seen is that GEPlugin CPU usage increases linearly with each kml placemark added. Is this the expected behaviour/ a normal limitation of the plugin? If not is there a more efficient way of adding many placemarks to the globe?
    I am using GEPlugin version 7.1.1.1580 (API version 1.010) and LabVIEW 12.0f3
    Please see the test results attached. Any input greatly appreciated!

    Hello,
    I have had a look at your graphs and understood what you are trying to do. To me it seems that as the image gets more complex it gets harde to render which wold likely cause increase in CPU usage resulting in the freeze. I would suggest you try running the program on anoher computer to check on the RAM front of things. If this is a limitation of the GE Plugin then unfortunately I can not do much to help, but if you think this is a problem coming from your LabVIEW code then you can post your code here and I can take a look.

  • Some problems with 3D with xorg 1.9.2-1 and xf86-video-intel 2.12.0-3

    I have some problems with the upgrade to xorg 1.9.1-1 and xf86-video-intel 2.12.0-3. Glxgears does not run smoothly at all and I got 15-20 fps (instead of the normal 60 because intel should sync with the V refresh rate). Very curiously, these problems disapear if I move the mouse cursor somewhere in the screen. Then glxgears run smooth and I have indeed the expected 60 fps
    There are no error messages and glxinfo say that 3D is indeed enabled.

    Do you have problems with anything that's *not* glxgears?
    I have indeed not seen other problems. Presently the only other software that I believe use openGL that I use is googleearth; which run fine. Could it be a problem with glxgears?

    I compiled and booted into 2.6.28 and switched xorg.conf back to
    EXA.
    Ok, it worked a little bit better but it did not WOW me.  So, I compiled by hand the
    latest intel driver and DAMN! very smooth in Compiz... "lightening fast"  I don't have
    any 3d games to compare but, some "artifacts" that were happening on startup of the
    AWN dock are GONE.   I can play a movie trailer and drag it around with wobbly windows
    and it looks awesome.
    Here's what I did....

  • Lenovo T400 (4500MHD): Xorg 7.4, xf86-video-intel-2.4.3 upgrade

    hi!
    I would like to ask you if anyone with an lenovo t400 has done a successful upgrade to xorg 7.4 with xf86-video-intel-2.4.3 and intel-dri-7.2-1. I'm still using xf86-video-intel-2.3.2-1 and intel-dri-7.0.3-1, though I'm not completely satisfied with it (sometimes X does not start, suspend doesn't work anymore).
    I've read a lot about upgrading troubles and I would really appreciate sharing your experience.
    thanks in advance,
    woifi

    woifi,
    I have the same machine and the upgrade to Xorg and xf86-video-intel make my machine not able to come back from a suspend/hibernate. The screen comes back, but everything is frozen. I have been able, however, to use the "vesa" driver in Xorg and get suspend/hibernate to work then. I can't use Compiz then, but I would rather have suspend than Compiz at this point. I'm hoping that the novelty of this machine and the Intel GMA 4500HD are causing the wrinkles in the drivers.

  • Recompiling xf86-video-intel 2.9.0 against xorg-server 1.6.5

    When xf86-video-intel 2.9.0 will come into [extra], it will have been compiled against xorg-server 1.7.0 or later. I'll stay with 1.6.5 for the time being, and I want to know if I need to recompile xf86-video-intel. The sources (intel 2.9.0 and server 1.6.5) are compatible. Will the binaries be if video-intel was compiled against a different version of xorg-server?

    I have replaced xf86-video-intel by xf86-video-intel-legacy

  • [Solved] xf86-video-Intel-2.99.912-1 breaks xorg

    After the update yesterday of the this driver my xorg does not start anymore.
    I reverted to xf86-video-Intel-2.99.911-2 and the problem went away.
    Can someone please shed some light on this.
    Below is the output of Xorg.0.log.

  • Xf86-video-intel 2.10 may required xorg.conf changes?

    Upon upgrading to xf86-video-intel 2.10.0-1, my dual monitor xorg.conf setup was no longer working (both monitors displayed the same low-resolution content).  The fix involved the following search/replace operations in xorg.conf:
    - replace "monitor-LVDS" with "monitor-LVDS1"
    - replace "monitor-TMDS-1" with "monitor-DVI1"
    - replace "monitor-VGA" with "monitor-VGA1"
    A couple of questions:
    - Was the xf-video-intel upgrade responsible for the problem I encountered?
    - If so, is this documented anywhere?  (It doesn't seem to be in the 2.10.0 release notes).

    no, you were using UMS, which defined display ports that way.
    the KMS method in use now names your ports LVDS1, DVI1 and VGA1. the reason this happened with the 2.10 drivers is that they now require KMS to work, you were forced to switch.

  • Xf86-video-intel not not working with intel 82852/855GM graphics card

    I am runing arch linux on a toshiba satilite r15 s829 and have the xf86-video-intel driver installed but Xorg does mot seem to be able to use it with my intel graphics card.

    There's a problem with old Intel cards and the current Intel drivers. Unfortunately using older drivers means downgrading xorg-server and friends. Read about downgrading in the wiki.
    I'm currently using xf86-video-intel 2.13.0-4 and xorg-server 1.9.4-1 and things are OK. My card

  • Xf86-video-intel killed my Xorg

    I just updated my system
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xf86-input-evdev (2.1.2-1 -> 2.2.1-1)
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xf86-input-keyboard (1.3.2-1 -> 1.3.2-2)
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xf86-input-mouse (1.3.0-1 -> 1.4.0-2)
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xf86-input-synaptics (1.0.0-1 -> 1.1.0-1)
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xf86-input-vmmouse (12.6.3-1 -> 12.6.3-2)
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xf86-video-intel (2.4.3-1 -> 2.6.3-3)
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xf86-video-vesa (2.1.0-1 -> 2.2.0-1)
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xorg-server-utils (7.4-3 -> 7.4-4)
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xorg-server (1.5.3-5 -> 1.6.1-1)
    [2009-04-15 19:38] upgraded xorg-utils (7.4-2 -> 7.4-3)
    And now Xorg display is completely scrambled, execept for the mouse. I tried to downgrade what I could - I could only downgrade xorg-server and it didn't change anything.
    The only way for me to get my display back is to switch back to xf86-video-vesa.

    switching back to "intel" gives me a scrambled screen again.
    here is my complete xorg.conf, just in case. I tried to remove the xorg.conf file to let X decide of its configuration by itself, but the result was the same. Anyone knows where I should look to get more informations ?

    I just tried to do a screenshot of my buggy display with scrot, and my desktop appears clean on it. I also tried with ImageMagick's import command, same result.
    So I guess the new driver is really breaking the display right when it comes to "paint" the screen - and the image actually looks like the lines are all messed up, like this :
    aaaaaaaaaaa
    bbbbbbbbbbb
    ccccccccccccc
    ddddddddddd
    turns to
    aaaaaaaabbb
    bbbbbccccccc
    cccdddddddd
