XRaid Setup for Facility-Questions

We are a small production facility and I'm moving towards shared storage. Here is the system I was thinking of getting, so if anyone wants to give any advice, I'd be happy to accept and very appreciative.
-We currently have 3 rooms: 2 G5's and 1 Intel 3.0 Quad all running Final Cut Pro regularly editing DVCPro HD and SD Uncompressed and DV.
I'm going to lease:
-XRaid fully populated with either 500 or 750gig drives (advice?)
-3 Dual Channel 2Gig Fibre cards
-Qlogic SANbox Express 1403 Fibre Switch
-Cables-Need 2 runs of over 25 feet to rooms
-MetaSAN software
-Placement: Can the XRaid live in our edit suite in our rack? Is it too loud to have in a suite? (We don't have a dedicated machine room.)
-Cable? Fiber optic or copper? Our rooms are all next to each other, but obviously, just to get cable up the wall, over the ceiling, etc, we will definitely be more than the 3 meters limit of copper. Am I correct on this that we have to go optical with these transceiver units??
-Size:750 versus 500's? Anyone have any negative experiences with the 750's? Greater chance of problems with them? Run much hotter? It seems way cost effective to go 750's for only an additional $1400 to get an extra several TB's...
-RAID: Best setup? I've only started researching, but it sounds like I should Raid 0 both sides individually and then stripe them Raid 50 together. How much drive space will I lose doing it this way for safety? Is this correct?
Thanks a lot for any help. This stuff is a little out of my techy comfort zone...
Kevin

Your setup sounds fine. As for specific questions:
>-Placement: Can the XRaid live in our edit suite in our rack? Is it too loud to have in a suite? (We don't have a dedicated machine room.)
To be honest, I'm not certain about the noise since all my RAIDs are surrounded by XServes, CRAC units/air handers, etc., etc. Anecdotal evidence says they're noisy, If it's too noisy for you, something like the XRack Pro might be an idea solution.
>-Cable? Fiber optic or copper? Our rooms are all next to each other, but obviously, just to get cable up the wall, over the ceiling, etc, we will definitely be more than the 3 meters limit of copper. Am I correct on this that we have to go optical with these transceiver units??
Copper cables can run up to 50 meters, so the choice is yours.
I've purchased long copper cables from CS Electronics before and have been very happy with them. They'll even make custom length if you want/need that.
>Size:750 versus 500's?
750's. No question. As you note, the price difference is small compared to what you get.
>-RAID: Best setup? I've only started researching, but it sounds like I should Raid 0 both sides individually and then stripe them Raid 50 together. How much drive space will I lose doing it this way for safety? Is this correct?
Ordinarily I'd say RAID 50, as you hint (although this is a striped (RAID 0) array of RAID 5 volumes, I'm guessing your 'RAID 0' comment was a typo.
However, if you're using a SAN product you should check with the vendors. Presumably the SAN is going to virtualize the storage and therefore it might not matter how the RAID is configured. In most cases I'd recommend RAID 5 on the XServe RAID itself, so it's the RAID 0 element that's most questionable.
You might also need to take performance into account. Ordinarily RAID 50 gives best performance, but only for a single host. If you have multiple hosts contending for disk access you might find that separate volumes, with individual servers weighted towards one array or another gives you a better solution since each machine is unaffected (or, at least, less affected) by what the other is doing.

  • Multi user setup for TM questions

I just bought a 500G external drive for use with TM, however, before I try to set everything up, I have a few questions.
The 500G drive will be the TM drive for 2 macs (mini and MB). The mini has 3 users (me, wife and daughter). The MB has 2 (me home and me work). I would like to have all 3 accounts on the mini and the 'me home' account to use the 500G usb drive for TM, attached to the mini (for now).
Do I need to create seperate partitions for each user/machine? Or can I just use it as 1 big partition? (I will be excluding system files from the TM backups).
Other question: How can I setup the usb drive to always be shared? Right now, I have it setup as shared by my admin account on the mini. As soon as that account logs out, the share goes away. Not the best situation for TM backups.
Thanks for any info you can provide,
    David

Whether to partition or not to partition:
You do not need to partition. Time Machine will take care of saving separate backups for each user.
The biggest reason to partition the backup drive is if you want to save other "stuff" on the drive besides your TM backups. Then you would create a Time Machine backup partition, and an "other stuff" partition.
That being said, in your case you may want to consider creating 2 partitions, one for your Mini and one for your MacBook. But you don't need to create a separate partition for each user.
The only reason to create a separate partition for 1 specific user would be if you want to make sure that user account has plenty of room for backups (or you want to limit the size of a users backup space). For example: Since Time Machine erases older backups to make room for new ones, its conceivable that your daughter could be downloading music or movies that get backed up a lot, leaving less space for you and your wife.
How to set up USB drive to always be shared
Normally, I would say that all you have to do is login as each user one at a time and set up sharing the same way for all of them. But I will be interested to see if this works for you. Please report back. What I am curious about is whether Time Machine on your MacBook will get confused when it tires to do a backup if different users are logged into the Mini at different times. Will the MacBook think they are different shares, or will it properly realize that its the same share but that another user just happens to be logged in at the moment. Please report back.
    Excluding System files
Like the other poster, I would suggest that you do not exclude system files. At least include them for the admin account on each machine. The reason is that in a "catastrophic" event, it will be much easier and quicker for you to get back up and running. All you would need to do is boot from the Leopard DVD (by holding down C during startup). Then after the language screen, ignore the main widow and goto "utilities" in the menubar, and restore your system from Time Machine backup. This will get you back up and running in one step (albeit a big long step). But by doing this you wont have to reinstall Leopard, then reinstall your applications one by one (reentering software keys for those that require it) and then restore all your lost documents. Just a suggestion. For the non admin users, you could exclude everything except their home folder (make sure not to exclude their library).
So to summarize this absurdly long post:
For what its worth I would:
    1) Create 2 partitions. 1 for the Mini and 1 for the MacBook.
    2) For the Admin account on the Mini and the MacBook DO NOT exclude anything.
    3) For all other accounts, exclude everything EXCEPT each users home folder.
    4) Enable sharing for your external drive independently for each user on you mini (start with your Admin account). Report back please. I am curious if your MacBook properly finds the drive when an account other than the Admin account is logged into your Mini.

  • A/V output setup for MacBook question

Bought the A/V cable and have used it to hook my MacBook to my stereo system while my guitar is hooked up to the MacBook. Tried it on my iPod to TV to stereo system, wanted to see my vids on tv and hear through stereo. Figuered out in "video setup" on my iPod that you need to set it to "tv out" .. where on my MacBook is that same option for watching my vids from my MacBook through my tv and stereo?

    Belkin switch works great!

  • Easy Setup for 24p Question

I have footage shot in standard 24p (F5 on the DVX camera)
I will be editing on a 23.98 timeline
I am also working with some 24pA material, so we're planning to use Cinema Tools to convert the standard 24p material for use in the timeline.
In Easy Setup there is one choice for DV-NTSC
    And another DV-NTSC 24p (23.98)
Confusing! Especially since I'm going to be editing in a 23.98 timeline. I know that the material on the tape, whether shot in 24p or 24pADV is 29.98; I'm just confused about which of these capture presets to choose
I knew this information at one point but it has decided to either go to sleep or exit my brain entirely.
thanks for any clarification you can offer

  • VS Express 2013 Setup for kids question

I'm getting ready to setup a lab for 8th graders. We are in a rural area where the majority of students do not have an email. Can we disable the Sign In for them? Is there a way around this without requiring them to have their own MS account in order to
    use Visual Studio Express?

    Hi Jmair,
You know that the VS2013 express version is free, but it will require us to sign in with the Microsoft account by design, otherwise it would have few days period limitation.
An extension to disable the sign in button.

  • XPS 2720 Question - best ssd setup for performance

    Hi Guys
the 32gb msata on the motherboard that comes with the AIO, is this any good, want to upgrade ssd, do I keep msata but get larger or do I get rid of this and the 1tb sata 7200 and buy samsung 850 evo/pro and will this give me the best all round performance, interested what you think and what you would buy
next thing I will need is a dummies guide how to do this and i am not that technically minded,
1 important thing is I dont have recover disks and my backup/recovery does not work as it says I have corrupted environment, and dell does not detect my machine and when i input my service tag number it does not recognise that either.
    what is going on,lol

    paul

The first thing you need is Windows 8.1 installation media, see here:
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/download-windows-8-1-retail-and-oem-iso/
Get a 250-500 GB mSATA and get rid of the 32 GB SSD cache drive. I prefer Crucial in particular the MX200 but Samsung are good also:
    http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/xps-one-2720
To install follow the instructions in the owner's manual to remove the mSATA mini-card:
    http://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_xps_desktop/xps-27-2720-aio_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf
Change the SATA operation to AHCI and wipe the HDD using DISKPART → CLEAN ALL:
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/ensure-you-have-the-correct-sata-configuration-in-the-bios-setup-for-your-configuration/sata-operation/
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/cleaning-up-a-drive-format-vs-secure-wipe-ssd-and-hdd/
Install Windows using a local account without a password (so your new factory image doesn't have your Microsoft Account associated with it):
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/a-clean-install-of-windows/a-clean-install-of-windows-8-1/windows-8-1-installation/
After installation of Windows you will need to install the system drivers (in the correct order):
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/downloading-drivers-checking-hardware-ids-and-downloading-and-installing-dell-system-drivers-in-the-correct-order/driver-installation/
Installation of Dell Backup and Recovery will make a new recovery partition from the clean install.
You may then want to switch to a Microsoft Account.
You will then want to initialize the HDD and migrate the user directories to it:

  • HT4557 whats the best itunes/appleID setup for family of 3 with 3 ipads, 3 iphones, one PC with all music on.  if we use 3 separate ones how do we share purchased and home content?

been with apple for years.  one itunes/appleID in use for family - all purchases and downloads on the one account..
now got 3 ipads, 3 iphones and when we update the software, we seem to get text/facetime issues due to multiple email addresses and phone numbers for the different devices that each individual uses.  For example, I send a text and it appears to have come from my wife or son to the recipient.  Not good !
there seems to be direction from apple that each of us should use our own apple id, thogh how do I link the accounts so enable family sharing of music/media we have purchased etc - Id also like to be able to review and keep a private eye on what my son downloads as he is 11 yrs old ! I manage this currently as we allow him access to the password for itunes (as we all use the same id today)
Am i better setting up accounts for my wife and son independent of my own, or not. Each of us would like access to the family content we have and the master library of synced content.  I just want the most simplistic approach that apple, or others would recommend.
Is there a better or optimum setup for a family as we cannot be alone.....

Thanks for the help, but a follow up question now.
My iPhone won't arrive for a little while, but my wife already got hers and she wants to set it up now. Using my Apple ID for the purchases, if she starts setting hers up, can she change her iCloud ID to something else quickly? It keeps telling us that we have to sign in with the AppleID first.
Should we just set up an iCloud account via normal internet before trying all this via iPhone?

  • Entry Channel setup for multiple company codes

    Hello,
I have a question regarding the entry channel setup (for external requirements in the Plan-Driven Procurement scenario)
In previous implementations, I 've created an entry channel below each company code (as the documentation says it should be). Now, for each entry channel, there was a EBP user assigned, which corresponded to an RFC entry in the backend system (I was connecting EBP to multiple backend systems)
Now, what should I do in the following scenario?:
    1. SRM is only connected to one backend system
    2. There are 50 company codes
Does that mean I have to create 50 users (for each channel) plus 50 RFC connections in the R/3 system (each with a different user in the backend system), pointing to the same SRM system?
I was thinking of creating an Org iD in the SRM structure at the top (which would be the entry channel), assign only ONE user to it and then fill attribute BUK with all the company codes. However, I don't know if this will work, because the external requirement process might need the company code defined in the "Function" tab... =/
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Gilberto.

    Hi Proyecto Genesis,
I am also configuring the Entry channel (org unit) for multiple company codes.
I tried your logic of defining the entry channel outside company code level. Assigned the BUK attribute and extended attribute for plants and storage locations.
Also in my case the local Pur org and Pur group is defined outside the company code. Is it correct?
However the system fails to transfer the external requisition to SRM.
    SLG1 displays following error message.
"No address found for partner function type Ship-To Address"
So if I move the Entry channel (org unit) under any one company code level then the external requisitions are transferred correctly to SRM.
But then the issue is the requirements are not transferred with the backend Pur Org and Pur grp. Instead they are transferred to the Pur Org and Pur grp of the company code under which the entry channel is defined.
Can you please share how do we need to define the entry channel, local pur org and pur grp for multiple company codes scenario, so that the ECC requisitions are transferred with the correct company code, pur org and pur grp to SRM?
Or do we need to define Entry channel for each company code and RFC user actually mapping the same backend system?
    Please guide.
    Regards,
    Sandeep

  • PC build and Disk Setup for a Pro-Wannabe

    Hi All,
I know everyone asks these questions and I thought I will not but, when you spend more than $3000 it feels their is no "Harm" in asking the question (but hopefully their will be Harm somewhere in the comments).
So, after waiting for the Mac Pro update for 2 years (just to fool myself that I may buy it), I have decided to move from the Mac OS to Windows after 4 years. I was only using a Macbook Pro to edit and feel now have the suitable experience to begin working on an actual machine.
If you ask my budget, I didn't have any so I went on a buying frenzy with my credit cards and will hopfully be driven to work harder to pay it off .
Here are the parts I have bought:
CPU - Intel 3930K (duh! I don't see a point in waiting for the 4th Gen)
    Mobo - ASUS P9X79 Pro
    RAM - GSkillz 32GB (8GBx4) @ 1600MHz 9-9-9 (as 3930K is limited to 1600MHz and 1.5V)
Will buy this same set around end of this year to make it 64GB if I feel AE would eat it.
Cabinet - CoolerMaster Storm Stryker (was buying HAF-XM but could not resist the looks of this).
PSU - Seasonic 860W Platinum Plus (Thought 1k is overkill and 750 not future proof, pricey though)
Storage (I thought I will get 1 cheap SSD and 1 Hybrid but then I read all the threads and went crazy)
    Samsung 840 Pro SSD- 256GB - 2 nos.
    Samsung 840 (nonPro) - 128GB - 2 nos.
    Seagate 7200rpm HD - 2TB - 3 nos.
Monitor (just fyi) - Dell U2412 (planning to buy ASUS PA '13 or Dell Ultra '13 24" after few months)
.. finally GPU - Not bought yet
I ordered the ASUS GTX 680 4G as 780 was too costly
but then I read the actual successor to 680 is 770. So I cancelled my 680 but the seller still has not confirmed, just hoping they cancel. Then it turns out 770-4G is not yet sold in my country (am not from the US) so I may import from US (surprisingly importing from Amazon with duties costs the same as probable street price in my country). So I will mot probably buy a..
    Gigabyte GTX 770 4G
So, Question 1> Any comments on the component list?
As I plan to build this on my own, have not thought of overclocking as I am not a geek and feel I should first get comfortable. Fair thought?
And hence I have not bought any additional Fans or Coolers.
And now for the Question 2> disk setup! Can you please fill the blanks or suggest alternatives.
This is what I have planned:
    C: > Samsung 840 Pro 256GB : OS and _____ ??
    D: > Samsung 840 Pro 256GB: Previews and Renders and/or ____ ??
    E: > Samsung 840 128GB x 2 RAID-0 : Footage and ___ ?? (the 128GB version has slowest write speed so assigned it to footage)
    F: > Seagate 2TB x 2 RAID-0 HDD : Exports and General Personal Files (like Docs, Music)
G: > Seagate 2TB : Dedicated solely as Backup Drive for crictical data at any time (which for me can be on any drive, that is why no RAID3/5 I feel)
And I plan to use my old external USB2/Firewire/USB3 external drives (500GB/1TB) for manual backups.
I can buy 1 or 2 more 2TBs (not SSDs) if it is really critical for some configuration but not anything more.
Usage: I shoot only DSLR footage and use PPro and AE CS6. I have till now been using a 2009 17" Macbook Pro with an SSD. And could have been spotted sometimes using a Class 6 SD Card on a USB 2 card reader being used as the Media drive (Ouch!). I feel (a) now I have the skill to justify this as many times I end up not implementing an idea in AE as my machine just won't budge and (b) I plan to buy the BlackMagic Pocket Camera to learn capabilities of RAW media. Like many I do hope to make an indie in the next 2 or 3 years but I hope I can employ services of a professional who should at least give me respect when he looks at my machine
If you have made it till here, thanks for your time. Waiting for your comments.
    Cheers!
Ps: And yes I am planning to subscribe to CC as its cheap for a CS6 owner. And then after 1 year will judge if I will continue with CC once upgrade pricing goes (hopefully yes as I wait for an extensively GPU using AE version soon).

Regarding question #1, build list, and question #2 drive setup:
    everything looks great except...
add a good cpu cooler; lots of good choices out there including but not limited to: budget: Cooler Master 212 EVO, high-performance air: Noctua NH-D14, simple liquid: Corsair H110, full water cooling: many options (full water cooling is a pain to plan and build, but ooooohhh so quiet!)
RAM: suggest go for 64GB at the onset rather than trying to add RAM later
definitely plan on overclocking - 4 Ghz is a walk in the park and very safe since you aren't totally comfortable with overclocking, and the performance gain is rather significant for renders, etc.
One SSD is plenty to get started - 256GB would be good for OS, programs, as well as providing some room for AE and photoshop caching
2 drives in RAID 0 would work pretty well for all projects, media, etc. If you really want to spend more in the drive area up the RAID to a 3 or 4 drive RAID
Suggest putting your backup drive in a hot-swap tray so you can remove it and provide off-site backup capability
    Regards,
    Jim

  • Best setup for a non-Mac file server?

I have a dual xeon server, with a SATA RAID5 I want to use as a file server in a cross-platform environment.
*What I've tried and the issues...*
At first I considered using Windows 2003 (Win2k3) but Services for Macintosh (SFM) is an older version of AFP and thus only supports 31 character filenames. With all our Macs supporting SMB/Samba/CIFS and Apple touting that "Macs and PCs can co-exist harmoniously on the same network" I figured I would give that a try.
    SMB doesn't work.
Sure I can create a connection, but transferring files is a completely different story. I'm trying to backup application and system data, but companies such as Adobe and Apple have named some of their files with special characters that can't be transferred over SMB. I know NTFS doesn't support these characters, but I though a Linux box using SMB would work fine. It doesn't. It's the protocol which keeps me from transferring the data. I end up with the lovely error message of "You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long or contain invalid characters for the destination..." (what's sad is, if you google for " because their names are too long or contain invalid characters for the destination" you only get 6 results.)
So I thought I would give NFS a try. Apple says "Viewed from Mac OS X, [connecting via NFS] is just like connecting to an Apple or Windows server." No. It's not. NFS shares don't even show up in the Finder's Network listing. There are also a pile of other hurdles which are only tackled by savvy, command-line using users.
So that leaves me with AFP. Win2k3 doesn't support filenames longer than 31 characters, and Win2k8 is dropping SFM altogether. Off to choose a *nix flavor, but that requires Netatalk. It hasn't been updated in years, it has many bad performance reviews... and most distros have removed it. I can download and install it. Oh, but that requires I get the kernel source files. Then I have to create an RPM an that's not working... now I'm several levels deep in trying to figure out how to get Netatalk working and I'm not even sure it will work.
*What's the best setup for a non-Mac file server?*
FreeNAS seems promising, but it's in alpha/beta and they have all sorts of warnings regarding potential data loss. Sure there's ExtremeZ-IP, but I really don't want to spend $675 do something Apple claims OS X can already do. I can put just about any non-Mac OS on this thing... what's the best way to set it up so it works?
    Thanks much.

Rick may be right because although i didnt think of it before i tend to have notoriuosly long classnames for my php classes and i have used samba on occasion (when rsync is out of the question for one reason or another) and never had a problem. I use kubuntu (feisty at the moment )with an ext3 filesystem. if i have a chance this evening ill give it a try and see what happens.
You could also possibly use FUSE to use an ssh filesystem for the shares... i don tknow how that would figure in your back up though.
Also if worse comes to worse you could tar or dmg the the necessary files... just some thoughts.
Ill be interested to know what you end up implementing....
OH one last thought... Compile Darwin from source and use that as your server

  • Why opening from java the rpt search for a JNDI when it's setup for a DNS ?

I downloaded CR for eclipse 2.
All is 'quite' working froma a java app.
i've only a problem with an 'jndi name search error'. I'll try to explain.
In the RPT i use a DSN connection to a sql server into a differente machine. When I open directly the rpt, all is working.
From java code, i'll open the report, but when i try to export  to pdf iit tell me about an error 'jndi name search error', with the name of the DSN connection i setup.
Why? Why opening rpt all is working, but opening from code NOT is working ?
What's the difference from two opening methods? Why an .rpt opened from java cannot just open the connection like when opened from cristal report !?
*My question is: why opening from java the rpt search for a JNDI when it's setup for a DNS connection ?! *

The .rpt has been originally created from an ancient version of Cristal report. probably the '8'.
In an italian software called 'Business', the .rpt is populated for printing of invoices and similar docs.
My society is trying to 'integrate' our software with the .rpt used from our customer.
So we want simply open .rpt, add a new logo, set the selection for record and save as pdf.
We so bought Cristal report 2008 (v.12 ), opened the .rpt, saved (so it 's now in a supported version).
The sql server is located at 10.1.2.40, and is a Microsoft Sql Server.
In my development pc I've installed Cr 12. I added a User DSN to point to Sql server at 10.1.2.40, at right DB with username and password. Opening from my development machine the .rpt and 'running' it, it display the data. Ok !
    I downloaded CR4 Eclipse 2.
I open report using the unmanaged sdk. (to access it through file system, not via RAS), Ok.
    I set selection record. Ok.
I execute .export with 'PDF' for format option and here I get an exception: the JNDI name 'CPR'  is not found. Where CPR is the DSN name setup into .rpt from Cristal Report 2008.
So, no, i'm not trying to using the designer from Eclipse, but from the full application. But I must use the rpt at runtime to export some rendered records.
What must I do to do this?
CR4E only supports java based connections, so it is looking for the JDBC/JNDI name and won't look at the DSN's.
How Can i setup at runtime a JDBC / JNDI connection ?
I already have a 'connection' from my code to the sql server, using sqlserver jdbc driver v. 4 from microsoft. And executing query I see the results. So i have right driver, ip, db name, user name and password
But is there a way to simply tell at runtime to my .rpt to use THIS connection? Or a similar connection...
Thanks in advance for help provided to us. (we bought a CR license only for this work...)

  • POP3 & IMAP Email setup for both Wifi & Cell use separately...

    Hello,
I was asked to post info about this by an iPhone support rep.
I initially had lots of trouble setting accounts for use with both my WiFi home and office networks and for use through the ATT cell network.
If you have a question as to how to setup email for both WiFi and Cell use, answer is you can't configure these manually and you don't want to...the phone does this automatically...and seamlessly. (you will NOT see the change in the advanced settings menu, this occurs internally, the settings appear the same)
The problem: Accounts changing settings automatically...when manually configuring two separate accounts with the same email address but trying to setup the outgoing settings for different ports...one for WiFi (your broadband server acct / port 587) and one for Cell (cwmx.com / port 25)...THIS WON'T WORK!! My WiFi configured email accounts would automatically switch to Cellular configured email accounts as long as they had the same email address. Even though I gave them different names, the phone looks at the "actual email address" and if they are the same it changes your configuration to match the other account (it does this by matching the account that was either ON or OFF first and as soon as you match the second account to that setting (either ON or OFF) the phone switches the settings to match the first account.
The Solution: (End of the Story first for those who have or are facing this problem): Be sure to setup the email accounts for use with your WiFi account first (and ONLY), as when you leave the WiFi area or turn off the WiFi setting the email account will automatically reconfigure itself for use with the ATT Cellular network...then the settings will switch back when you re-connect to the WiFi area(s). The settings that you will "SEE" are your setup for WiFi, this will not change even when using the Edge network (at least not what is displayed in the "advanced" menu). You will still see Port 587, even though the phone is changing setups internally and changes back once back on a WiFi network, you just don't see the changes.
    *I hope this helps!*
(more details below for those who might be interested and _for those who may be trying to setup using COMCAST Broadband_)...
My issue began because I could not get my Comcast setup to work for outgoing email. So I was advised to setup for the Edge port settings by an iPhone support person from ATT...this was a huge error. Because I attempted to do this it actually kept the phone from smoothly converting settings as needed. I only discovered this after resolving the actual problem with my WiFi (Comcast Broadband settings) issue which was actually the setup that MUST HAVE a user ID and Password, at least when using a Comcast Broadband account. Unlike the rest of my XP and ME computers on my networks which do not require this info, the iPhone DOES.
Because I could not get outgoing mail to work with my broadband setup I attempted to setup two accounts for each email address...one for Cellular and one for WiFi for when I would figure out my problem...or for just sending email more quickly. This does not work as the conflict causes a nightmare. This is something the iPhone support folks should have explained but failed to do so, perhaps as they didn't know this?
Bottom line: Let the phone do the choosing...it works great and will avoid YOU wasting TWO DAYS and more than 12 hours on the phone with iPhone Support as I did. I eventually figured the port switching issues and solutions on my own through trial and error and luckily one bright iPhone support person advised me that he knew for sure that when using the iPhone with Comcast you must setup "outgoing settings" using an "ID" and "Password" which I was provided by Comcast in only a few minutes. I don't use their emial account but I setup one just for this purpose. Once done, my email accounts began working normally. Once I resolved the conflict issues listed above the phone now works great both WiFi and Cell.

    fullspool,
Comcast offers an authenticating SMTP server that should work for you on WiFi and EDGE both.
The settings are linked in this Apple knowledge base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306074
    The Comcast link is:
    http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=Emailtop18913
From that link the settings are:
    Your email address: [email protected]
    The email server type (POP)
    Incoming mail server: mail.comcast.net
    Outgoing mail server: smtp.comcast.net
With SSL on for both incoming and outgoing.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Best setup for iMac with SSD & HDD? Best location of scratch & home folders

Best setup for iMac with SSD and HDD? Best location of scratch & home folders?
    Computer:
iMac 2.93 GHz Quad core i7, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD
There is not much info from Apple about the best way to set up an iMac with a Hard Drive and Solid state drive. I’ve looked at a few of the forum posts across the web and came up with a plan and lots of questions. (I do use photoshop frequently, but not on a professional level):
    1. I will keep OS and Applications on SSD
    2. About moving the home folder: I saw some posts about moving the whole home folder, but it makes more sense to me to only move selected fodlers withing the home folder tomake the best use of the SSD. So will keep the home folder on SSD, but move certain folders (document /music/iphoto/download) to 1 TB HDD via instructions I found on the macintoshperformanceguide website:
    cd
    sudo cp -r Documents /Volumes/Master
    sudo rm -rf Documents
    sudo ln -s /Volumes/Master/Documents Documents
    3. I would like to get 8 more RAM when I can afford it
    4. I will attach an external hard drive for most of my documents and backup storage
    5. Now here is where I’m not sure what’s best:
    a. Should I partition my internal 1 TB hard drive and use the first partition as a scratch disc for photoshop and other applications? How much should I partition? Is there any benefit to this if the rive is partitioned?
    b. Should I use an external drive as a scratch disc?
    c. Any advice on a good 1-2 TB external drive?
    d. Should I just leave things in factory settings?
Don't assume I know the basics - I got all the above just by searching around. Any advice and commentary is appreciatedThanks.

Thanks for the advice and the links. yes, I would like to speed up ps as much as possible.
I wonder if putting the scratch disc on the same drive as the OS would cause them to interfere with each other? Even if they are on different partitions, they would not be able to be accessed at the same time, or could they? That's why I was wondering if I should place scratch disc on the internal HDD -- but then I don't know how much to partition for it (or to partition at all?)
ALso, I read on a few places that too much read/write on the SSD wears it down over time? Is this more of a theoretical concerns - it does not make sense to me since it has no moving parts!
thanks again for the advice ... I'm gonna go digest those links

  • Need advice on best setup for Extreme and Express w/ (n only) network

I'd like to get some advice on the best setup for my situation. I've read a number of posts on WDS, Extending a Network, etc. and, unfortunately, I'm now more confused than ever.
We have an Airport Extreme 802.11n using WPA2 Personal, 2.4Ghz (n only connection) which I've found to give us the best range/connection speeds for the following devices (all computers running 10.5.5, Apple TV's using most current update):
    (2) MacBooks
    iMac
    (2) AppleTVs
The good news we have a large house, the bad news we have a large house. Meaning of course that I don't get the range in parts of the house I'd like to. I also have an older Mini (G4) connected to the AEBS thru ethernet (the Mini acts as the iTunes server for the ATVs).
I just bought a new Airport Express with the desire to place it on the other side of the house to both enhance the range of the wireless network and to provide another wired to wireless connection to the network.
I initially merely chose to "Extend a wireless network" but that seems to have a MAJOR adverse impact on the speeds of the wireless network. dropping the streaming to one of the ATV by like 90%. I would like to maintain the security settings I have as well as the 2.4Ghz (n only) since these provide the best speed/connection range on the AEBS.
My question then is what is the best way to use the AX (WDS? Bridge?).

The best way to use it is the option you chose "Extend a wireless network".
WDS forces you to the much slower 802.11g and even cuts that bandwidth in half.
Operating as a bridge has nothing to do with wirelessly extending a network. Changing this option won't have any effect on wireless bandwidth.
