XServe on 2 Seperate Networks

I will be getting 2 xServes to be used as web servers. I understand that they will be hooked up to 2 seperate networks.
I assume that I can do that, and keep the 2 networks isolated from each other. I would like to not open up things like ftp/ssh/or anything like that if I can afford it.
Since I can't test this, I guess I would set up the 2 networks in the network preference pane. Is there anything that I might be missing?
Thanks!

Define 'two networks', please.
While the XServe does have two NICs, it's designed for one 'external' NIC and one 'internal' NIC (e.g. a LAN on a private network).
It isn't possible to configure two external (public) NICs and get them to work in the way you expect. The issue is that you can have only one default gateway. This means that all non-local traffic is going to go out one NIC, even if it's related to traffic on the second NIC. This can cause problems depending on how you're connected to the networks.
If one of the networks is a LAN and doesn't require any special routing, then you just use Network preferences to set the IP addresses accordingly.

    Hi There,
Is it possible to connect to seperate networks to one SAP Server ?
The server does have a spare network card
    Regards

    Hi,
We are using VPN and using Terminal Licensing or Remote Desktop Conneciton.
The idea here is VPN will connect you to the network and when you are connected to the network
dont use the direct LAN IP connection use the Terminal Licensing to connect.
Again both are needed VPN and Terminal Licensing. VPN for the connection and if successfully connected
use or connect from Terminal Licensing or Remote Desktop connections.
    Thanks.

  • Creating two seperate networks with 2 time capsules?

So i currently have two time capsules. The first one is bridged with my dsl modem and is acting as my internet gateway and backup for my main imac and macbook which are connected wirelessly as well as a file server with addition external harddrive connected via usb.
I want to connect an additional timecapsule via ethernet and use it to create a seperate wireless network that allows my guests, kids macbook and any of his hooligan friends to connect. The second time capsule will allow my kid to back his macbook up. I dont want this network to be able to access my up stream network with my main imac and macbook because I will not be issuing poeple access to it except myself and will lock it down with MAC address filtering.
I am worried as my kid or any guests I allow to access my network can or will be able to reach my main computers and I want to prevent that. Is this possible with two time capsules?

Now if this setup will reduce the NAT doubleing issue on the ps3, xbox and apple tv's thats good?
Should work as long as you understand that these devices are connecting to the Guest Network on your "main" TC. How well wireless will work going through all the obstructions is open to question.
You will also be sacrificing half of the bandwidth on your "main" TC when you enable the Guest Network feature.
There will still be a Double NAT for devices that are connected to TC #2.
My next question is how do I allow everyone to see my ethernet printer? Plug it into TM#2 ethernet port?
Not sure what you mean by "everyone".
If you plug it into the TC #2 Ethernet, devices on the TC #2 network will be able to see it, but not devices on the "main" TC network.  Reason....TC #2 is on a different subnet than TC #1......unless you want to setup TC #2 in Bridge Mode.
If it were me, I would password protect all computers and devices on the "main" network, except the printer. Then, connect TC #2 in Bridge Mode and call it a day.
Users on TC #2 will be able to "see" other devices on the TC #1 network, but not connect to them unless they have the password for the device.

  • Adding a leopard Xserve to a Windows network - benefits / drawbacks

I run a Windows 2003 network of about 25 XP workstations and several Os X systems. One of our designers who uses OSX and who also has the ear of the owner has requested a Leopard Xserve to basically act as a personal file server. None of the other features would be utilized. Email/Calendaring is provided via Exchange and all the Mac's have access to Windows file shares without issue. So I'm here to ask, in the role outlined above, is there any REAL benefit to adding this server to the network? The owners have asked me if this is something we really need and in my research, I can't really find a real benefit to it. We had a conference call with him and when I asked what benefit it provided he mumbled off about NFS+ storing meta data and just kind of trailed off and left it at that, but again, I've found nothing to indicate any real world benefits behind him having his own $3000 Xserve to use as a personal file server.
Can anyone offer any insight or opinions please?

    Hi
    My 2 cents:
Short answer number one: 'No benefit at all' in the environment you describe.
Short answer number two: 'No drawback at all' in the environment you describe.
If you are interested in locking down mac clients with something similar to the security policies available on AD then it may be something you would want to look at?

Might explain things a little better although it may be something you have already come across in your research?

  • Accessing Xserve Desktop Out Of Network via VPN or Remote Desktop

    Hi everyone,
Thanks a lot for taking the time to look at my question.
I'm trying to figure out how I would set up an Xserve so that it could operate on a work network while allowing users to access it away from work (at their houses) with a login and password that I've set up in the Xserve. That way they can access specific applications on the server.
I've searched through the forums and other documentation already with moderate success. Apparently I don't NEED a static IP address for my Xserve but it would make it easier. It seems that the most highly recommended solution is setting up a VPN.
So after some further research, I found that the VPN can be set up directly within the OSX server but I'm unclear on how to actually allow it to do what I'm trying to do. I don't want my external users to be able to have any admin rights -- I basically want them to remote desktop into a user account on the xserve with no ability to change any settings, but to access one application on it so they can run that application on the server.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

If I understand your request correctly, what you want cannot be done out of the box.
Despite Mac OS X Server's ability to support multiple users, it's still limited to one GUI environment/desktop. That means that there's only one set of GUI apps that can run at a time.
You could have multiple users log on using Remote Desktop, but they'd all see the exact same thing. In addition, actions (key presses, mouse movements, etc.) by any one user would be reflected on every other screen, so it's not practical to have multiple users trying to use the same GUI environment.
You need to more clearly define what it is you're trying to achieve. Why, for example, are you trying to run applications remotely over the internet, given the additional latency inherent in this kind of setup)? What do you expect to gain?
More importantly, what application(s) are you trying to run?
Some applications support remote processing (e.g. an application you run locally on your machine submits a job to the server for processing, based on the idea that the server is a more powerful machine).
Other apps support collaboration where multiple users can share the same data and updates are dynamically reflected on other clients.
There are some hacks that emulate multiple desktops, and they might work for you, but you need a better understanding of what you're trying to do.

  • Two Airport Extreme (6th gen): Two seperate networks or one router one bridge?

    Greetings All,
    I have fiber optic service and the modem that came from the ISP is wirelessly capable of old version of 802.11n and short range as well, it has four lan ports as well. So I bought two Airport Extreme (AE 802.11ac) and its working ok but I'm trying to understand the difference between the two scenarios in terms of efficiency and speed;
    1. Fiber optic cable connected to modem. AE1 connected to modem Ethernet port 1
via physical Ethernet cable. AE2 connected to modem Ethernet port 2 via
powerline. DHCP disabled on AE 1 and AE2 and carried out by the modem. Wireless
on modem is of course disabled. SSID the same on both AE1and AE2 but 2.4 and 5
GHz channels are unique for each AE.
    2. Fiber optic cable connected to modem. AE1 connected to modem Ethernet port 1 via
physical Ethernet cable. AE2 connected to AE1 Ethernet port 2 via powerline.
DHCP disabled on modem and AE 2 and carried out by AE1. Wireless on modem is of
course disabled. SSID the same on both AE1a nd AE2 but 2.4 and 5 GHz channels
    are unique for each AE.
Any thoughts? Am I better off essentially creating two separate wireless networks or just one with one AE as a router and another as a bridge?

Your questions are really about a matter of preference. Both 1) and 2) are correct implementations.
In 1) above, the "modem" (which is actually a modem/router) is providing the routing services for the network.
In 2), the "modem" is acting as just that, a simple modem with AE1 acting as a router and AE2 acting as a "bridge" to AE1.
If you asked the support folks for your modem/router which setup was best, they would say 1).  However, if you asked the support folks at Apple which setup to use, they would say 2).
AE1 and AE2 are creating separate wireless networks, but if you use the same wireless network name,  or SSID,  and password for both networks, everything will act like one "big" network. Technically, this is called a "Roaming Network".

  • While using WEBRTC, I am unable to get Firefox browsers on seperate networks to connect. I suspect there is an ICE agent issues with FF.

I'm developing an application using WebRTC and Data channels. I have no problem connecting data channels in chrome browsers across separate networks but, unable to connect data channels in Firefox browsers across separate networks. I always get iceConnectionState failed. I'm parsing the ICE candidate information from the SDP's 'a=' record after issuing a peerConn.createOffer. I then send this ICE candidate data across the signaling channel. Upon receiving the ICE candidate information on the receiving end I perform peerConn.addIceCandidate(candidate). However, nothing I have tried for the past several days is allowing the two Firefox browsers to connect the datachannels via WebRTC. I am however able to make the same code work across two Firefox browsers if they are both on the same network.

hello kbrooking, this here is i primarily user-driven support forum, so i'm not sure if we could come up with a solution for this issue. if it's something reproducible, then i'd recommend filing a bug at bugzilla.mozilla.org - there it will get the attention of developers. thank you!

  • Aperture and XServer, Library on a Network, when will Apple support it?

    Hi,
How can I put a Aperture Library on a XServer Networkdrive and access it with different useres. (not at the same time)
Are there any plans from Apple to make Aperture more capable to use XServer resources?
    JO

I would like to know the answer to this one too please.
I see Aperture as a great solution for my art department which has several workstations. Everyone needs access to a photo library and tools to work with editing images.
The fact that this is a one computer solution only is very frustrating because there are not really good solutions for photo library production work flows out there.
I suppose only official Apple people could give information about taking Aperture in this direction but please don't make me go to the rumor mills to find this information.

  • Accessing two seperate networks

    Ok here is my situation:
    1. There are two completely separate networks. One which is used for the internet(it uses proxy servers) and the other which we use to manage a set of servers at remote locations.
    2. I need to be able to access both networks at the same time as my email is web based and I need to copy and paste information often.
Right now I am having to change the service order so I can do both. Is there a better way to do this? A tweak somewhere or software I can use?

I resolved issue using the route command to input the secondary port's subnet and gateway information

  • Using two seperate networks

    Hi,
I was wondering if its possible to use two different networks to download and stream onto time capsule,
My home internet is not so good so i was wondering if it is possible to take it to my place of work (Use their Guest Wifi connection) with their permission ofcourse so i can download to the Time capsule and then take it home and stream to my apple tv?
    Many Thanks
    Karl

Time Capsule is the wrong device.
    1. It is not a media player.. it has no media extensions or servers or anything. It knows nothing about Media.
    2. The Apple TV cannot play raw files.. it plays files that are streamed to it from iTunes. The files must be therefore downloaded and converted to and included in itunes.
    3. To download files for your home use via your work guest wifi, is possible.. but you cannot use a TC to do it. You need a computer. And you can load the files onto a USB drive of any kind.. even a thumb drive.
Work guest networks should be throttled to a speed that is slow enough to prevent you downloading movies.. which are after all a couple of GB in size.
If your work place allows you to download movies.. multiplied by all your staff members.. maybe you should get together and create a library.

  • Seperate Networks in 6500 Series

I am looking for some best practice thoughts...
    - Internet Circuit coming in on subinterface P2P on a connection with lots of other subs.
    - Set of Class C outside addresses.
    - All of this in my core 6513 with an FWSM.
What I need to do is essentially seperate the outside interfaces on the other side of the firewall. However, I am stuck with everything on my main switch. Bringing the circuit in, assigning an IP and creating the outside VLAN is easy. From there, the 6513 is going to route everthing. My best thought is to VACL access to the outside connections, but this does not seem ideal. No config note seems to match this odd design, so I am solicting ideas.
This is a Native IOS box BTW...

  • Headless Xserve Network Setup

I have installed the OS on G5 Xserve but I do not see the mac address of the Xserve to configure the network instead I see the mac address of the powerbook. Also on reboot the Xserve doesnot boot off its harddisk.Any ideas on to get everything working properly.
    Xserve   Mac OS X (10.4)

You don't need the server's MAC address to configure the network.
If this is a fresh install, run Server Assistant on another machine on the network. With luck it'll find the new machine on the network and you can configure it via the GUI, including configuring its network settings.
On the other hand, if it doesn't boot of the hard disk something else is amiss and Server Assistant might not work anyway. What does it boot off?

  • Remote Server Admin not working from outside of network for 1 server

Our company recently changed ISPs and I had to change our two 10.4 server's IP addresses. We have a mail server (intel xserve) and a file/web server (quicksilver g4). Both servers have two network cards in them. The problem is two-fold:
1- I can successfully manage the Xserve machine locally on our network and from my home. However, I can only manage the Quicksilver g4 server locally. Any kind of external access is not even acknowledged.
2- I'm not sure if I missed any steps when changing IP addresses for these server-based computers. Also, I'm not sure if I correctly set our dns names to the correct IP address.
For some background, this is the exact IP update process I used for each server:
Quicksilver G4 (file/web server) - Installed network card #2 and configured it with the new Public IP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. In Server Admin I set our website to use the new public IP address. (network card #2 has no firewall device in between it and the internet.)
Then, I configured the default network card #1 to a static, yet private IP address that's behind our DLink firewall device with the rest of our network.
Intel Xserve (e-mail server) - Network card #1 was the only one setup before our network change. It had a static, public IP address. When we changed ISPs, I configured network card #2 to the new static, public IP address supplied to us by the new ISP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. This new IP address is where all email traffic currently gets pointed to. (All mail is successfully sent and delivered.) Until our former ISP gets shutdown, I still have network card #1 configured to the older static public IP address. After the old ISP is shut off, I plan on changing network card #1 to a static, private address.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What should I check in AD?  I am by no means an expert with AD.
Yes, I am using the same client OS.
I am talking about RDP over the internet, like from home to the office.  We have a static IP assigned to the router from ISP.  A static internal IP assigned to the server on the LAN.  And the router port forwards 3389 to the assigned IP.
It was working fine before we reinstalled Server 2012.  These are the steps I took when reinstalling:
    1. format drive and install OS
    2. rename the server
    3. install SQL server
    4. Install TFS and SharePoint
    5. Add Active Directory role and promote to Domain Controller
    6. Add domain users
    7. Enable remote access on the server and add users to remote access list

  • Connecting a wrt54g to an existing wireless network

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to create a second wireless network by connecting a wrt54g to our existing wireless network?
Our main router is upstairs, connection in the downstairs office is terrible, plus it's being used by a team that would like their own network anyways. Can I plug the wrt54g into the main router, assign it a static external IP and create a second wireless network?
    thanks

great thread toomanydoughnuts, thanks!  all the hours I spend googling for an answer are such a waste when I can post a specific question and a human being answers me back  :-)
I see that what I was trying to do is possible but before I start let me ask your opinion.
My initial goal for a seperate network was to give Router 2 a static external IP and connect our server to router 2 so external users would always be able to access it at the same address in case Router 1 ever had an IP change (I don't have constant access to router 1 and am not supposed to be fiddling with it!)
The secondary goal was to improve the wireless signal for those of us downstairs and I figure having Router 2 down there would provide a nice strong signal.
I have realized now that dyndns can solve my issue with Router 1's IP changing (even if it's once a month it's an issue for remote users accessing our server). Dyndns will re-point our host name to the new IP if it ever changes.
But I still have the issue of a very weak signal in the downstairs office.
Because I'm seeking the simplest, easiest to manage solution as I'm far from a network guru, do you think a better option may be to get a repeater or something like that for our downstairs office to just boost the signal from Router 1? If so, any recommendations?
thanks in advance for your time
Oh, and if I did go the route of setting up Router 2, could I give Router 2 a static external IP address?

  • Problems installing HP Color LaserJet 5550 on Airport network

I've been trying to install my dad's HP CLJ 5550 on our home network for ages.
*This is some background story, skip to the last bit if you don’t feel like reading*
Some months ago, everything was fine and dandy. We had a network consisting of:
    The modem from our ISP
The switch from our ISP (I think that's what it was)
    1 Airport Express 802.11n
    2 Airport Express 802.11b/g
The 802.11n AE was connected to the ISP switch with a standard CAT5 ethernet cable, and that was in turn connected to the modem, and was transmitting the signal to the two other AE's, one connected to our printer with an ethernet cable, the other connected to our home stereo for AirTunes.
Then came the day when our ISP sent us a new modem, this time a wireless router/modem hybrid.
I got rid of the switch and modem and replaced them with the upgrade.
Furthermore, the new ISP router had WiFi built-in so naturally I wanted to take advantage of that, but in the end we ended up having 2 seperate networks, one transmitted by the ISP router and one transmitted by the 802.11n AE (which is connected to the ISP router w/ ethernet cable) to the other AE's.
The ISP router network had great internet performance whatsoever, but I couldn't get the printer and AirTunes working.
The AE network had very shaky internet performance but the network seemed very stable and served AirTunes and wireless printing.
After some time I tried merging the 2 networks, by setting the AEs to join the current network that the ISP router was transmitting. It kinda worked, but we lost all printing.
The printer is crucial to my dad so I suggested getting an AEBS so he bought that.
Now I've set the network up and it consists of:
    1 AEBS (802.11n)
1 AE connected to the printer with an ethernet cable.
2 AEs connected to 2 different stereos.
1 ISP router (but this time I've disabled the WiFi!)
The AEBS creates the network, gets its internet connection from the ISP router, and is extended by the 3 AEs. Very fast, stable and AirTunes performs great... But the printer.
I’ve set the printer to TCP/IP and manual config.
The IP adress I’ve set to 192.168.1.150 (in line with the rest of the network)
Subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0 since that’s what Airport Utility says.
Gateway Adress is set to 192.168.1.1 which I guess is the ISP router? I don’t know. It’s just what Airport Util says. Should it be the AEBS’s adress?
Are there things that I need to disable on printer? On the network? On my computer? Enable? Something? Aaaaargh..
I get nothing from pinging the IP-adress. Back in the golden days it used to recognize it as an HP printer it even checked ink levels and so forth.. Now I can’t even ping.
I’ve tried changing every parameter I can think of.. Adding it as LPD, IPP and HP JetDirect Socket.. (but since I can’t even ping what would I get from changing that?)
That turned out a wee bit longer than I expected...

The Firewalls are disabled and from my laptop you can view all of the shared
Folders on the Desktop with the CP1215 attached via USB.
When I issue the print from my laptop that is on the same network, you see the
print file show up in the CP1215 print queue of the Desktop the CP1215
is USB attached to and then disappears about 15 seconds later.  Here is
how it appears on in the Desktop CP1215 Print Queue before it disappears
Doc Name            Status      Owner     Pages    Size            Submitted            Port
    E-mail print           Printing      Guest          1      547 KB     2:00pm 08/26/09      USB003
I've also download/installed the latest drivers.  When I reinstall the CP1215 on my laptop from
the Desktop, the "PRINT TEST PAGE works from the Laptop but then all print commands after
    that do not work.
I see from my Google search I'm not the only one having this problem
ANY IDEAS what to try next?
    Wes
