Xserve RAID not viewable by Windows

Hi smart ppl,
I have given a new task to fix the Xserve RAID wtith 7 drives with 500 GB disk space. It is hooking up to the Fibre Channel cable to the server. We use QLogic SANsurfer HBA manager to manage the port. The port status is good according to the software. However, windows 2003 are not able to see the disks. It used to be working fine and now it stops working. And the light on each drive are appeared solid orange. I could not install the RAID Admin Tools since it is windows based OS. Our warrenty is of course expired long time ago. Please help me to resolve this as I have no idea how to troubleshoot that. Thanks in advance!!!
FV.

The easiest way to connect to it is to put whatever machine you're using to contact the RAID in the same IP range as the Xserve RAID and choose "Add System". If there is an Xserve RAID on the system in same subnet it will pop-up in the window and you can choose "Add". It will scan automatically for all addressable boxes on the network and offer them to add. This is definitely the easiest and gets around having to know the exact IP address.
If the machine you're using to connect to the RAID is not the same IP range you can still add it directly by IP address IF the address is routable. Certain whole blocks of address like 10.0.0, 192.168.., and 169.254.. are not reachable from outside those address space, period. If the RAID has one of these addresses (it will self assign in the 169.254.. if not told otherwise) your connecting machine needs to also be in one of these IP ranges.
I have all my non-routed machines in the rack plugged into a local hub and I attach a laptop and let it go to 169.254.. to connect to my little racked LAN.
HTH,

  • Xserve RAID not responding

All of the sudden my Xserve RAID is not responding. It does not seem to be turned on, though when I press the button with the speaker icon, a light appears. Nothing has been unplugged, or at least not that I can tell (I'm working on a complicated edit suite), it just won't start up nor interact with my computer. Please help!

    Hi
+"It does not seem to be turned on"+
Have you tried pressing the on button on the back?
Do you see status lights for the drive modules themselves? Have any of the FC cables become loose/dislodged or removed? Can you communicate with it using RAID Admin? Is your mac the host?

  • 20 GB Ipod Problem - Not viewable in Windows and wont start

Hello all, wondering if you can help me with this Ipod problem i have.
    1) Ipod turns on and displays folder with exclamation mark.
    2) Ipod is not viewable in my computer
1 - I have tried a reset and putting into disk mode, which goes through fine, but it still starts with the above error.
2 - I can sometimes view the Ipod in My Computer and or disk management, but can not go into it or format it. Diskj manager reports it as un-readable.
If i try to run Ipod update/restore application it asks me to plug in an Ipod.
Any ideas on what else i can do? I thought i could at least get windows to see the device and format it to a standard Fat32, then use the Ipod restore to re-write the folders to use it as a ipod.
    Thanks

    Try this then
The Sad iPods icon, clicking sound or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
There are also some cases being reported that some unrecognized iPod being able to be erased with Linux, then reconnect the iPod with the original computer and do a Restore there.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
    10. Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
    11. Put your iPod in disk mode and plug with a computer, and have a boot of your computer using the Mac OS or XP startup disks, hope that your iPod will be seen on Mac's Disk utility and allow you to do a Erase there. Or, under the XP, you will be able to find your iPod there for you to do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

  • Xserve Raid not shutting down

Hi, We are having a problem with our Xserve RAID, which is direct connected to our Powermac G5. When we shut down the computer, we generally turn off the RAID right after. Occasionally (like once every two weeks), when we go to turn the Raid off, it just will not turn off (No matter how long, or how many times we press the power button on the back). Is there some kind of fail safe, that won't let it turn off if something is going on within the RAID? What else could cause this?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone could offer...

I had this same problem in the past week. I couldn't get RAID admin to detect the unit and rebooting etc didn't work. What I did do was unmount the RAID itself from the desktop and then reboot; afterwards I could shut down the RAID unit from the system > shutdown menu.
I should add that my RAID Admin tool didn't detect the unit until I unmounted it and rebooted, but after rebooting it did detect the unit fine.
Of course this may not be the case with you- but it's worth a shot if you haven't already tried it.
    Good luck!

  • Xserve Raid not recognized by Disk Utility

My Xserve Raid is recognized when I run the RaidAdmin utility. I can create new arrays everything shows up without any problems. I updated the firmware for the Xserve Raid using just the ethernet connection to administer it. Changed the card and the cables that are used to connect the Raid server to a G5 server, but it still does not get recognized by Disk Utility. I am at a loss of what to do next. I have green lights for everything....no problems showing up in RaidAdmin. Please, please help....

    Hello
I have the exact same problem: after updating java and rebooting the server, the raid array is no longer visible. Everything is green, no errors in the log files, fibre channel is up and running, BUT: the array does not show with any SCSI address. LUN masking is off. Server is at 10.5.8 (intel). The array was mounting just fine before the reboot (and all before that). I've plugged the fibre channel into a PPC server, same thing: link ok, no SCSI. I'm reconditioning the drive at the moment, but it should still be visible.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Xserve Raid Not Showing all Drives Empty - No Green Lights on Xserve Raid Drives

I have an Xserve Raid.  I recently set it up with my Xserve server with fiber cables and now when the Xserve Raid system boots and starts all the drives show as empty in the Raid monitor.  Not sure if I have something configured wrong and I think I shut it down incorrectly before I got it hooked up right.  When I first got it I was able to see the lights on all the drives but now it boots but no drives show up at all.  I have fiber cables to the host Xserve machine and the Xserve Raid plugged into the network with only 1x  ethernet cables (not 2 if that makes a difference).  When I try to manage the Xserve Raid all drives show as empty even though all the 500GB drives are plugged in.  Not seeing any green lights when the Xserve raid boots indicates something is up.  I reset the controller cards to stock with the paper clip to factory settings.  Does anyone have any ideas on what to try.  Anyone have this issue?  I haven't found any discussions except one that had a single side of drives go down because of a bad controller card.  My Xserve Raid shows no drives at all.  Any help is appreciated.

Expansion is a 2 step process: First, you expand the array. Second, you merge the slices. The documentation is clear on step #2, but the GUI doesn't FORCE you to do it. However, it is necessary.
If you did both steps, try rebooting your host and see if it picks up the changed size. It does work... the usual issue though is growing the file system to recognize the additional size. On Linux, I can't help you.

  • PKI SCCM Client Certificate Template not viewable by Windows 7 and Server 2008 workgroup machines.

    Hello everyone,
I’m having issues with workgroup computers, not domain systems when I request a certificate.
It’s extremely weird. It has something to do with Windows 7 and Windows 2008 machines. In 2003 server I can request a certificate manually with certutil and it see the certificate template. I copy over the exact command
on windows 7 and it can’t see the certificate template.
    I have the following configuration:
    CA Enterprise
I have created the SCCM Client Certificate
I have created the SCCM Web Server Certificate
I have created the SCCM Distribution Point Certificate
    GPO is configured
SCCM 2012 R2 CU2 configured to do HTTP and HTTPS
    Installed SCCM Client Certificate
    Installed SCCM Web Server Certificate
    Installed Distribution Point Certificate
Deployed to a domain computer good on PKI
    Workgroup Computers:
I’m having issues with deploying certificates
    Windows 7 –
    (ERROR) not successful
    Windows Server 2008 R2 –
    (ERROR) not successful
    Windows Server 2003 - successful
    Windows XP – successful
How I’m getting the certs for the clients is by utilizing the following scripts from this URL.
    http://www.ithierarchy.com/ITH/node/48
I did find a couple of errors in the code, but if it’s working on my Server 2003, then it should work on the others. Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 seem to have the same issue. The error I’m getting is the following:
Command line requesting the cert ---- CertReq –new –f testcomputer.home.pvt.inf c:\client\testcomputer.home.pvt.req
    Error --- Template not found.
    SCCMClientCertificate (this is my template)

Just to give an update on what’s happening with this. I found out this format is unsupported by MS with Windows Vista and newer OS’s.
Instead you must utilize two other additional roles on the CA to have this work. The caviate is, I’m down to the testing and it’s not working as in the document. I have MS Support
working with me to resolve this issue since it was written by MSFT.

  • Xserve raid Export to Linix

Hello. We work at a video facility and have an Xserve. I am trying to connect it to a linux red hat box. On our X serve we have two Share points and they are both separate drives. One is called Public where all the system files live. The other is called Storage. When I type the command showmount -e + the ip address of the xserve in Linux, the linux machine is only seeing the public sharepoint and is NOt seeing the Storage sharepoint which is what I need to connect to on the Linux side of things. Both Sharepoints are indentical on the Mac side except that we can't enable spotlight searching on the storage sharepoint but we can enable it on the public sharepoint. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Xserve Raid and Windows Machines

    Hi All,
I need some help, first and foremost I am not familiar with Xserve Raid units. We have one in a remote office that is connected to all our macs via Fiber. I need to connect a windows box with a fiber card to this SAN also to backup the SAN. How do I go about mounting the volume within windows and what software do I need to connect?
    Thanks,
    Greg

Are the computers using the RAID as directly attached storage or are they using XSAN (or another product) to access the storage as a SAN?
If they are using XSAN then I'm afraid you're out of luck as we there is no Windows client for XSAN. If they are using a different SAN product then perhaps you'll have more luck with finding a windows client.

  • XServe RAID in Windows environment

First of all, I am not a Mac person so please bear with me.
I recently inherited a XServe RAID, a fiber channel card with two fiber channel cables and NO Mac computer. So everything I have is Windows based. I have a Dell Poweredge 2850 with Windows 2003 Server and Dell Windows XP workstations. Installed the fiber channel card on the server. I connected the ethernet of the XServe RAID on a netgear switch and connected the fiber channel straight to the fiber channel in the server. The server is connected on the same Netgear switch via ethernet. I was able to connect to the XServe RAID thru the fiber channels and ethernet connections.
Utilizing the Raid Admin 1.5, I was able to set the network settings. Assigned the IP 192.168.2.155, 192.168.2.154, subnet 255.255.255.0 and named it Xserve1. No router or DNS were entered. With the servers Disk Management, I NTFS formatted 2.7TB on each array and assigned M and N drive letters. I then created folders and files on each array to see if they will take and it did.
Now I'd like to share the Xserve RAID on the Windows network via ethernet only. Is that possible? I didn't want to use the Xserve RAID as a server share but as an independent machine instead. If so, how can I do it? Thanks...
    Bernard

Hello, ulonggapo, and welcome to the Apple boards,
Data is actually only accessible from the RAID over fibre channel and the ethernet exists only for RAID administration and control. To share the space on the RAID over ethernet you would need to connect it via fibre to a computer that would then reshare the storage to clients.
The RAID is platform neutral and certainly can be used by Windows for data but only over fibre channel. If you're interested in pursuing it you should look at http://alienraid.org/ as a starting place for more non-Apple RAID information.

  • Added a 2nd Array on my Xserve RAID, Though it's not appearing in disk utilityt

I have an Xserve RAID unit. Up until now I have just been running 1 side of it with 7 drives on RAID 5 = about 4TB. I recently picked up another identical RAID unit with 7 drives to fill out the right hand bay of the unit doubling our capacity. I have installed these and initialised the array which took about 48 hours, it's now showing as online and green lights all the way.
Now I've gone to make use of the extra space but it is not showing as available in the mounted RAID icon on the desktop, nor will the new array appear in disk utility. When I access server admin however, on the overview screen it shows I have 8TB on offer. Contrary to this in the system profiler the 'Fibre Channel Domain 2' is not reporting any SCSI devices unlike 'Fibre Channel Domain 0' - Not sure this is related.
If anyone can help me gain access to the new found 4TB I would be greatly appreciative.

it is not showing as available in the mounted RAID icon on the desktop
    It won't.
The XServe RAID is really built as two independent RAID controllers and drive sets in one enclosure.
The 7 left-most drives are connected to the top controller, and the 7 right-most drives are connected to the bottom controller. They are independent. There's no way to build a single 14-drive array - the best you can do is build two 7-drive arrays.
What you should find is that if you connect the bottom controller to your server, the second array should appear on the desktop, separate and distinct from your existing volume.
If you really need to expand your volume to cover all 14 drives then you'll need to use software RAID 0 (striping) on the server to meld both of the 7-drive arrays into a single logical volume.
