  • Paying termination fee and upgrading phone

My wife has an old nondata phone with a contract expiring in a few months and is willing to pay the termination fee and enter into a new 2-year contract on an IPhone 5s.  Two questions.
    1.  The manager of the Verizon store looked on his computer and insisted the termination fee would be $175.  I think it should be $175 minus $5 for each completed month of the contract, which is much less.  I know from the web site that this is the rule for a "post pay" contract, but I'm not sure what that means.  The contract is a normal two year unlimited calling contract with each month's fee paid in advance.  When I questioned the $175 termination fee, the manager said that this was what his computer said and he was not willing to discuss the issue.  Who is right?
    2.  Aside from the termination fee, when we told the manager we wanted to terminate the old contract and enter into a new one on a new phone, the manager started muttering something about how this could be prohibited "churning".  He couldn't explain what that meant, especially after I pointed out that we could just pay the termination fee and then go over to AT&T and enter into a new contract with them.  This is not desirable because we would lose the benefits of our share everything plan.  Is there a rule against terminating and upgrading in this way?  The web site does not let you do it online.

        Hey there michael1000,
The iPhone 5s is a great phone so I absolutely understand your eagerness to get your hands on one.
When you upgrade at the discounted pricing you are agreeing to a new two year agreement. If you disconnect before the agreement end date you are billed a early termination fee. The Early Termination Fee for a basic phone starts at $175 and decreases $5 for each month completed. The Early Termination Fee for a smartphone starts at $350 and decreases $10 for each month completed.
We wouldn't want you to disconnect your line, lose your number and have to start all over. Let's take a look at available options to make this as easy as possible.
When is your wife's upgrade date exactly? Dial #UPG from her cellphone to find out.

    Gracias,

  • Phone numbers with "pause character" not working same as first-gen iPhone

    Is this a bug?
When I configure a phone number in my contact list to use the "pause" character (which shows up as a comma character in the display) a number of strange things happen.
For instance, if I configure the following: (###) ###-#### ,,**2216464#
where (###) ###-#### is my office phone number
,, is a pause to allow for the automated attendent to pick-up
** is recognized by my phone system as a transfer to my voice mailbox
    2216464 is my voice mailbox
    # is a termination character recognized by my phone system.
Using my first-generation iPhone, this worked fine.
Using my new iPhone 3G, this no longer works.
    Some observations:
When directly using the touchpad on the iPhone, it appears to send DTMF tones as quickly and for as long as you hold your finger on the keypad. But, if you configure a phone number in the contact list and that phone number has a pause in it, each number configured after the pause will actuate for several seconds. The tone for each number (in this case, the 2216464) last SO long that my phone system gives up on the call and, basically, terminates the call. In addition, the inter-digit time is SO small as to be non-existant. In other words, in my sample phone number, the leading two digit of my mailbox number sound like they are expressed by the iPhone as a single, extra-long tone. There should be a longer pause between the first two digits. If I attempt to break them apart by inserting a pause (displayed as a comma), the pause is SO long that, again, my phone system gives up.
    So, in summary:
Why did this change between the first generation and second generation iPhones?
Also, why is the pause "character" SO LONG? Instead of making a pause character, say, four seconds, why not make it one second and let the user put in four pauses if they want a four-second pause?
Why does the character length appear to extend after use of a pause character?
Why is the inter-digit pause practically non-existant?
    Thanks.
    Ken

I'm having the same issue. I just got the phone last week and was trying to call a number with an extension. After realizing that Address book does not have an extension field I reformatted the phone number using the "pause" (comma). With this in place it will not dial the number. Remove the pause however, and it will dial the root phone number.
Please tell me this is just a bug and will be fixed soon. It's bad enough that I've had to spend the last week reworking my contacts in Address Book after having to jump ship from my Palm software. As a business user it is a regular piece of daily business to encounter the automated receptionist asking for someone's extension. Since the iPhone doesn't show the number you just dialed (the extension is in there after the "x" but it doesn't recognize it) you end up having to memorize the extension prior to making each call.

  • When is it safe to port number from Verizon

My current Verizon 2 year contract is up Nov. 25th. I don't want to buy and activate an iPhone before then, because doing so would transfer my number AND cancel my account, resulting in an early termination fee.
So my question is, when should I activate the iPhone in order to still be able to keep my number? When my contract is up with Verizon, do I need to sign a new contract to continue to use it, or will it just continue monthly until I decide to cancel it (but this time with no early termination fee since I'm no longer under contract).
I'll also try calling Verizon to figure this out. Thanks.

That's exactly correct. Verizon will aggressively try to get you to sign a new contract, but you do not have to in order to continue using their service. I bought the RAZR when it first came out with Verizon with a one year contract. I kept the phone and the same plan for almost two years, paying a month to month after the contract expired at the same rate as before.
When I bought the iPhone, I simply put all my information into iTunes, including my number which I wanted to port and sent it. Three hours later I was using my iPhone with my old number. I never spoke with Verizon, everything was done for me. It was a super easy transition.
I hope this helps others with similar questions.

  • Stuck between a rock and a hard spot

Well, I am waiting on a superviser to give me a call back for some time now. Here is my problem. My works intranet sends alot of adobe and flash vids to my email. I currently have a razor with the droid op system. It wont open any files up nor will my other droid electronics. All my coworkers got I phones so should have I. So long story short, I contacted vcs andexplained my situation and tried to get an early upgrade for an iphone 4s. I was giving the run around by customer service,  even though it seemed as they were trying to help. So I can pay my 350 early termination fee, go to att and get my wife and I, 2 iphone 4s for 99 cents a peice and save 496 dollars. So if I stay with verizon they will sell me an I phone 4s for 449 each. Over the past year and half I have paid over 3200 dollars in sevice fees to Verizon.  Never late or missed a payment. so should I switch or can a verizon rep please help me?
    thanks,
    david

What you're asking for is not fair to Verizon or any Customer Service Representative who cannot grant your request, you signed the agreement just like Verizon did that you would exchange the discount in the price of your Droid device for a two year contract where you would pay your monthly bill, Verizon fulfilled thier part, giving you service for the last year for your money and they gave you the discount on the phone like agreed, YOU'RE the one trying to break/amend the contract after the fact. That you need an iphone for work is either something you probably knew before you're purchase or was irrelevant at the time, neither of which is their fault. And so what if AT&T will give you an IPHONE 4S for $0.99? of course they will, so would Verizon if you were a new customer or upgrade eligible and BTW you forgot AT&T's activation fee and first month of service in your calculations plus your ETF with Verizon when you break your contract. All those Verizon reps are doing is upholding the contract which they are perfectly justified in doing. Also most of the iphones are not capable of being early upgraded due to contracts with the manufacturer. Did it ever occur to any customer that has a contract with Verizon that Verizon has thier own contracts?

  • 5.1 update..... "this device isn't eligible for the requested build"...???

iphone 4S with 5.0.1...tried to update this morning to 5.1 (update available message on iTunes), and get this error message:
"The iPhone "xxxx" could not be updated. This device isn't eligible for the requested built."
clicked on more information and been forwarded to support.apple.com to "iOS: resolving update and restore alert messages", followed all the steps, checked that all software is up to date, disconnect other USB devices, restarts and so on....no way, still get the same error message...
anyone knows whats going on ?
    Thanks, Igor

found a work around...simply go to "settings" then "software update" and update from there.....apart from that you can also make changes in your "host" file, cause i guess thats the reason iTunes break up the update once it connects to the apple server, either delete "74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com" in the host file, then itunes should update the software, or add an "#" in front of the address...both should work...
you can also open terminal and type:
    sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
press enter and enter password, delete the address above, its usualy at the end of the host file, navigate in terminal with arrow keys, after address is deleted press "control-o" to save the file. Exit terminal, restart iTunes, thats it...
however, try to update over iPhone settings first....

  • Who is 10.0.1.3 wireless client in my time capsule

I use my time capsule as a router and there is this wireless client 10.0.1.3 along with all others (which are known to me), except this one.
How can I find out who is this, or what is it?
I have AirPort Express connected to TC too, but it shows separately in the AirPort Utility.

    OK Bob/John,
Sorry for this long post - and thank you so much for your thoughts and time.
It still shows that 10.0.1.3 wireless client. But now I think it could be my MacBook as the 10.0.1.3 wireless client on the TC has the same hardware address (xx:xx:xx...) as the one that shows in my System Information panel in the Network/Locations folder under the Wi-Fi Hardware (MAC) Address - see screen shots.
Bottom line - 10.0.1.3 could be my MacBook, but is it really - I am not that tech savvy?
If it is - where can I go and rename it so it shows my MacBook name?
Anyway, I am going to tell you what I did if this is relevant for anything you were wondering about. Otherwise you don't have to read the statements below.
    Bob said:
Power off the entire network....all devices....in any order that you wish when you go to bed tonight.
In the morning, power up the modem first and let it run a minute by itself
Power up the next device connected to the modem the same way
    Power up the next, etc.
Keep powering up devices one at a time until the network is back up
    ------->
    I did that this morning.
    John said:
The TC will retain the client's IP address until its DHCP lease expires, or you cycle its power.
If you had a visitor with an iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch the TC will remember its IP address long after he's gone. Don't forget the guest network - if you enabled it, it's open.
"Ping" that address using Terminal - if the client is no longer present you will get 100% packet loss so that was likely the source of this mystery. On the other hand if you get returns the times shown may be useful.
    -------->
I have AU 6.1 and it shows on the TC in the Internet Tab option for "Renew DHCP Lease", but I haven't touched it yet, as I don't know what exactly to do. However, I did cycle power the modem.
And yes, I had visitor a while back (approx. 4 weeks ago) - he has an iPad and and an iPhone too. Both were not on my WiFi though. They were on my Wi-Fi before that - around 8 weeks ago. But at that time I had a different ISP. I don't know if that's important to be mentioned.
    Guest Newtwork is disabled.
John, I don't know how to "ping" any address in Terminal. Which address are you referring to?
Bob is right - iPhones and iPads come and go as wireless clients depending on sleep/power off or when they are not on any Wi-Fi but on their celular network.
John, Yes, all screen shots are from my MacBook 13" AL, late 2008 (yes, I know it is old) running on Mac Lion v.10.7.5.

  • Multitasking and Skype question

I am very happy that the Skype app now supports multitasking. However, there is one thing about Apple's implementation of multitasking that confuses me. My understanding is that the OS can arbitrarily decide to terminate a background app to free up resources.
So, my question is, if you are waiting for a call on Skype, how can you be sure that Skype is actually running in the background? My understanding is that in iOS there is no way to figure out what tasks are running in the background (double clicking the home button gives you a list of both recently used and tasks that are active as background tasks).
Do you just have to cross your fingers and hope that you are not running any memory intensive tasks that may cause Skype to automatically be terminated?
    Does anyone know?
    Thanks!

After you reboot your iPhone, no user apps are running (e.g. Skype), and thus no user apps have registered for any of the kernel services. You'll need to restart the user apps you're interested in having running, i.e. Skype. Normally you shouldn't have to reboot your iPhone, unless upgrading the OS.
When an app registers itself for a background service, it also registers with the kernel to be able to be "woken up" exactly where it left off. (The latter is available as a separate API, and is used by game apps.) Yes, it is automatically started, from where it left off, or as the user app callback indicates, when the background kernel service wakes it up. (User apps in the task bar are suspended and NOT executing on the run queue of the kernel.)
A runaway kernel service would be detected when you see CPU Idle usage at 0% and CPU System usage at 70-80% with the rest in Nice and User CPU usage.
Of course any software has bugs. This is why we (iPhone owners) occasionally see battery drainage. I suggest getting A+ System Monitor, a free app, and monitoring your CPU usage and Load (1/5/15 minute number of processes running average). The app also runs at the same time you have the task bar open (double-press the Home button). A CPU Idle usage above 80% is excellent. Average I've observed is about 90%.

  • Hi, i'm going to buy an I Phone 5 with an at&t contract in december. I would like to bring it to Germany next year in June. How can i unlock it ?

    Hi,
i'm going to buy an I Phone 5 with an at&t contract in december. I would like to bring it to Germany next year in June. How can i unlock it ?

If you mean a permanent unlock, you will have to ask AT&T about their unlocking policies for the iPhone 5. They may not unlock your iPhone at all until your contract has expired, and if they will you would almost certainly have to pay an early termination fee. You may be better served to buy an unlocked iPhone, now available from the online Apple Store, rather than one locked to AT&T.
If you mean you wish to continue with AT&T but just use the iPhone overseas, talk to AT&T about international roaming plans.
    Regards.
