Yet another (different?) battery issue

I have two batteries for my Powerbook, one I keep as a spare and which has only been used about half a dozen times.
Over recent months I have noticed that the original battery (and the unused one) seemed to take an increasingly long amount of time to recharge, but in the past few days it won't seem to recharge at all. The percentage of remaining charge on both batteries will only go down, with one currently at 25% and the other at 37% and no matter which battery I have installed, whenever I click on the battery menu, in the first line it says "10:00 until full"
I've tried all the suggestions that I've seen in responses to other battery issues, including resetting the PRAM both with the four key shortcut and using open firmware and reset-nvram and reset-all. I've also tried resetting the PMU by holding down the power key, until the long bleep and I've just tried the Powerbook G4 Battery Updater, but with both batteries I get the following message "Your battery was not updated. Make sure you have a battery properly installed and then try to update your battery again. Be sure to complete the update process for this battery before starting the update of another battery"
The information in the system profiler for each battery is as follows:
Original battery -
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 861
Charging: Yes
Full charge capacity (mAh): 3508
Health Information:
Cycle count: 110
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): 10
Voltage (mV): 11320
Relatively new battery -
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 1621
Charging: Yes
Full charge capacity (mAh): 4381
Health Information:
Cycle count: 3
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): 10
Voltage (mV): 11331
I notice there is a massive difference in the "Cycle Count" for the two batteries (110 and 3) although I haven't got a clue what this means.
Any advice or suggestions would be most welcome, as at present I am worried that eventually I will have run both batteries down and there will be no point in me purchasing a new one if my laptop cannot charge it for some reason.
As ever my utmost thanks in advance to anyone who takes the trouble to get back to me
Kind Regards
Bernard
PS. the charger info in System Profiler is as follows
AC Charger Information:
AC Charger (Watts): 50
Connected: Yes
Charging: Yes

Thanks a million for getting back to me Louie
The ring on the power socket is orange, suggesting that it is charging. However I didn't noticed the 50watts in my System Profiler details for the AC Charger. My Power Supply says that it is a 65w one with the correct model no. for this Powerbook (I think it says A1021 on it but I don't trust my eyesight at this time of night)
Both batteries do appear to be charging but incredibly slowly. For example I have been trying to charge up the battery all week and I had it up to 33% at one stage, before I neglected to plug the power chord in when I turned it on and it slipped back down to 22%. Three days later with it plugged into the power constantly (with me using the computer only during the day and putting it to sleep at night - should it charge when in sleep mode?), it's only crept back up to 30% again.
This battery could be knackered but I hardly have used my spare battery and even that won't seem to charge any quicker
I am also pretty certain that this incredibly slow charging is a recent problem, as I've had that power supply for some time (a year maybe) and I am sure that in the past the batteries have charged up at a more normal rate.
My power supply socket got a little knock recently when I tripped over the cable (as seems to be a common problem on the old non-magnetic sockets) and since then, with the connection not being nearly so snug, it happens quite frequently that I wake the computer from sleep and only realise that the plug is slightly out of the socket when the warning comes up that the laptop will put itself to sleep because the battery is low.
As a result, where previously I was always using the power supply with the battery fully charged and the light on the ring usually green, these days it seems to be permanently orange because I keep running the battery down and in recent weeks it will not seem to charge up because it takes so much time
I am guessing that I must've bought a moody power supply (I guess cheap is cheap, as they say) but I don't think it's the source of my problem because the issue has only manifested itself recently
Many thanks as always for taking the trouble to get back to me
Best Regards
Bernard

  • Yet another 920 battery issue; detailed mini-test

I have been having trouble with my 920 battery, but I waited the two weeks for the battery to "condition" assuming there really is such a thing. And, now my son received his 920, and he is complaining about his horrible battery life, too. So, I decided to do a test last night while driving home, and this morning when the phone was fully charged & not used. Former about the recharge speed while driving, and latter about idle discharge.
    **** This morning:
7:28am: Phone is unplugged off the wall, at 100%. LTE, NFC, Bluetooth enabled, but no NFC or BT connections made. Email set to "As Items Arrive". Nothing running in the background as verified by holding down the BACK button; only the START screen. The "background tasks allowed" apps are basically the defaults, including NokiaDrive; but none of them are actually shown as "running" when you hold the BACK button.
8:30am: 92%. During the last hour, the phone has not even been switched on, so even the screen hadn't come on. 8% loss in 1hr?! Only a few emails had arrived, but not looked at.
9:19am: 81%. Again, no use of the phone in the meantime. It has just been lying on the countertop. No phone/data features used except those used by the phone in the background. Almost 20% off in 2hrs!!
Basically, with the default features of the phone, after two weeks of "battery conditioning", while sitting on the countertop, starting from a 100% charge, not being used for anything actively, my phone seems to drain at 10%/hr.
In the meantime, my iPhone4 went from 100% to 100%.
    **** Last night:
I was driving home for about 30min. Before plugging the 920 into my 1amp USB car charger, it was at 57%. At the end of my drive, it was at 59%. That is 4%/hr recharge rate while the phone is using 10%/hr!
    **** Also:
Only anecdotally: It seems because of the difference between recharge/discharge speeds, when I use NokiaDrive while my 920 is plugged into the car charger, I still arrive at my destination with a *significant* battery loss. There were days when I left home at 100%, drove for 30-40mins, and arrived at 57%. Totally unacceptable.
**** NOKIA: Given all the complaints on the web & here on your own boards, I think it is time for you to announce something publicly, not just as a post here, but as a News article & email to all your registered users. Otherwise, you'll see many people switching away from your flagship phone. This is not just a few people running into the problem because they are doing this or that.
Using Nokia 920 running on Windows Phone 8

Worth reporting: After the phone drained by itself very quickly yesterday, I charged it again on the wall to 100%. It actually charged somewhat quickly. I don't have numbers, but it "felt" like 4hrs to full charge.
This morning, over the first hour off the wall, under the same conditions as before (LTE, BT, NFC all turned on, no background apps running), even with slightly more phone/data usage than yesterday, the drain was only 1%. It went from 100% to 99% in one hour, even though I drove around with it in the car, not on a charger, thus moved from cell tower to cell tower, from WiFi to WiFi, receiving & responding to email & text, none of which was happening yesterday. In other words, it performed about 10 times better this morning after full drain & recharge, even in the face of slightly increased usage.
So, maybe there really is something to recalibrating the li-ion battery by draining it fully and charging it up again. Talking to my son last night, he also said that after his phone drained fully a few times, not on purpose btw, it is behaving better now.
Of course, why Nokia would ship these phones with less than optimally calibrated batteries is beyond me. It feels like that is something that should be done at the factory, before the phone enters the box and gets to the consumer, as opposed to being part of the user's initial out-of-the-box experience.

  • Yet Another P7N Diamond Issue

Apart from the ongoing problem I am still having in this thread I now have yet another dilemma. I bought a BFG 9800 GT OC2 as a upgrade and installed it the usual way ensuring I connected the 6 pin connector too and the pc does not boot up even after several attempts
Instead I am getting a strange beeping pattern one long beep then some shorts
Please if someone could shed some light I would greatly appreciate it even if its regarding my previous issue.

I use the above Cooler Master PSU, zero issues. Has 4 pci-e connectors, so it's ready for quad sli if I ever want to go that route with my P6n Diamond. Has lots of different connection options, highly rated PSU. Not all Cooler Master PSUs underperform, just have to know what you're buying. The above supply also has 2 8 pin connectors so for instance when my GTX 295 arrives I'll have no trouble (card uses 6/8 pin). Reviews also can be helpful.

  • A new iOS update and another new battery issue on the iPhone 5

Has anyone else contacted Apple support and been given te same old "solutions" on the battery issues?
    1) Turn off location services.
    2) Turn off background app updates.
    3) Restore as a new device.
These solutions turn a smartphone into a dumb-phone. I love my iPhone but with every new iOS update, the battery becomes incredibly unreliable.  Has anyone found a solution that does not kill the iPhone's functionality?

You can try a soft-reset of pressing and holding both the home and sleep buttons for 10 to 15 seconds so that it reboots, but you are likely to get the same screen. If it does then it will need to be connected to a computer's iTunes so that it can be reset back to factory defaults - do you have a friend with a computer with iTunes installed on it, or is there an Apple store nearby that you could try going to (if there is then preferably make a Genius Bar appointment at it, or don't go at a busy time) ?
Has she been backing up to the cloud ? If she has then she should be able to restore to that. If not then what she can redownload for free from the stores will show in the Purchased tabs in the store apps.

  • Yet another 3G battery charge issue/question

    All...
Lately my iPhone 3G is draining it's battery much quicker than it had previously. It will not last a full day. Even with no Safari, games, music, etc. Also, when I charge it, it gets hot, more than usual.
Not sure, but I think this all started when I let the battery completely drain. I partially charged then the battery completely drained again.
I've reset shut the phone off then back on with no improvement. I've had the phone for less than a year. Apple replaced my 1st 3G with this phone due to another issue.
I'm going to let the battery completely drain then will completely charge to see if that helps. Otherwise, any ideas?

I am having the same problem. It barely makes it through 12 hours now, when previously I was used to about 36 hours. It has only started doing it recently, but I'm not entirely sure what I've done to provoke it.
Have seen similar issues in other threads, with people suggesting restoring/updating etc. I am yet to try this so will give it a go, but not convinced it will help.

  • Yet another CC billing issue

I had to update the credit card on file with my Creative Cloud account. Since then, the card has not been billed. The last payment was made on October 6. The information on file is correct, and has been for quite some time (even with multiple attempts to re-update it). Now access to my Adobe products has been suspended. I tried calling Adobe multiple times ... once hanging up after 45 minutes of being on hold, another time choosing the call-back option and never receiving a call back, and finally getting the recording that the wait time was between 90 and 120 minutes. One time I got through on chat, but after the unsuccessful session I was told to call Customer Support. Yet a connection to sales was near instantaneous.
These wait times are completely unacceptable. I understand that the attack on your servers has caused big headaches, but hire some temporary support staff to get through this.
Please, Adobe, help me out. I need to use your products for work.

    Hi Jon,
I am so sorry for the inconvenience  faced by you, please provide me your contact number, if possible with an alternate contact number. I will follow up the issue.
I have send an email to you also, please respond.

  • Yet another tagged songs issue

Ok all, I have another question about tagged songs. I figured out how to buy a tagged song. On a windows machine, you have to hit the applications key and then there is a buy option. I bought two songs this way, but when I connected my IPod the other day to purchase a song I had tagged since I bought the last song, the buy option is no longer available. How do I buy the songs now?

  • Yet Another Nvidia Performance Issue (YANPI)

Hi everyone! First post here so excuse if I post this under a wrong category. Also excuse my english.
Straight to the point, I've been using my laptop with Gnome and Compiz Fusion for a while and until not long ago everything was working perfectly smooth and all. I don't know if it is related to an upgrade or what but I didn't change any configuration. The problem itself is that all the 3D rendering is done by the CPU even though Nvidia Performance Level goes to Level 2 (Nvidia 8400M, NV GPU Clock 400 MHz, NV RAM Clock 400 MHz). Glxgears shows a performance of at least 1300 FPS but the processor level goes to 80% (Core 2 duo). I went to System Monitor and I saw that glxgears was eating one of my processors and part of the other.
    Here are some facts:
Direct rendering is on (glxinfo | grep direct)
nvidia-settings -q GPUCurrentPerfMode -t returns 1 while glxgears is running (2D Mode rendering)
nvidia-settings -q GPUCurrentPerfLevel -t returns 2 while glxgears is running (Nvidia Performance Level)
    nvidia driver version: 190.42
    xorg.conf says:
    Section "Module"
        Load           "dbe"
        Load           "extmod"
        Load           "type1"
        Load           "freetype"
        Load           "glx"
        Load       "synaptics"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
        Identifier     "Device0"
        Driver         "nvidia"
        VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
        BoardName      "GeForce 8400M GS"
        Option       "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerLevel=0x2"
        Option       "Coolbits" "1"
        Option       "TripleBuffer" "True"
        Option       "NoLogo" "True"
        Option       "RenderAccel" "True"
        Option       "DamageEvents" "True"
    EndSection
    Section "Extensions"
        Option      "Composite" "Enable"
    EndSection
Well, I guess that's the important stuff. Again, this problem started without me touching anything so I would assume it was a pacman upgrade issue. I will appreciate any help on this matter. Thanks in advance.

... Compiz has always used up a lot of CPU usage, but that's not an indicator that the graphic card not doing the rendering.
The 60 fps glxgears you see is probably vertical synchronized one and that's why it doesn't eat CPU, but understand this, in complicated graphical application there is a lot of work for the CPU, not just the GPU, and the latter often results bottlenecked by the former. Read a random CPU review/benchmark on the Internet and you'll see how different CPUs result in different frame rate in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky or WoW for example, but in Games like Crysis different CPUs don't affect the framerate, because the game is too heavy on the GPU for the CPU to have influence. It's completely normal for Compiz and X to eat up 50% CPU during effects, it's just the way they are designed to work, and don't search for a problem with your graphic's card.

  • Yet another security propagation issue

    Hiya,
I'm using WLS 8.1SP4, on windows (dev env).
    I'm using forms based auth.
I login with user "cadmin". The debugger shows
    the subject from weblogic.security.Security.getCurrentSubject()
has only the WLUserImpl "cadmin", and some WLGroupImpl's, as expected. There is no mention of user "weblogic" in the Subject instance.
    When I do:
    new InitialContext()
and then attempt to call a method on a stateful EJB configured only for access by cadmin, I get the following stack trace. It occurs whether I try Security.runAs() or just directly in original calling thread.
    <--snip-->
java.rmi.RemoteException: EJB Exception:; nested exception is:
         java.rmi.RemoteException: No such user weblogic
         at weblogic.ejb20.internal.BaseEJBObject.postInvoke(BaseEJBObject.java:254)
         at ima.security.AuthorisationSessionManagerBean_pirxps_EOImpl.joinGroup(AuthorisationSessionManagerBean_pirxps_EOImpl.java:270)
         at ima.admin.security.RemoteAuthorisationOperations.joinGroup(RemoteAuthorisationOperations.java:461)

         at weblogic.security.acl.internal.AuthenticatedSubject.doAs(AuthenticatedSubject.java:321)
         at weblogic.security.service.SecurityManager.runAs(SecurityManager.java:118)
         at weblogic.security.Security.runAs(Security.java:41)
    <--snip-->
From the debugger in the ejb business method, the call:
    _sessionContext.getCallerPrincipal().getName();
    returns user "weblogic"
The thing that most confuses me is the "cannot find user weblogic" - the subject reported by Security.getCurrentSubject() was "cadmin" - a user for which the ejb is configured to accept.
One more item possibly of relevance: the servlet is in a separate war to the ear that the EJBs are in. This same ejb and other ejbs are successfully being invoked however.
Thanks in advance for any pointers here,
    Regards,
    Hugh Madden

So, I'm trying to upgrade from 10.9.5 on a 27" Mid 2010 iMac. I have downloaded the installer and everything seems to work fine. Until I actually start installing it. During 'Preparing to install" the load bar gets to 'one second left' and just stalls. Over and over again. Under different users. Yep, I've reset the PRAM, repaired permissions and such. Still not working. Any idea?

  • Yet another Quick TIme issue.

I made new audio in Digital Performer and imported an MOV file as the source video. The new file was saved as an MOV and plays perfectly on a mac. However, when I try to play this on my pc's QT, I have to load the new file first THEN the original file before both the video/audio play. Help!

OK, that makes total sense. Thank you very much Jon; that explains the issue very clearly. This of course begs another question though; how to I merge the new audio file and the original video file?
That may depend on how you plan to play the file. My preferred strategy is to create a new target file and prevent the original source files from being accidentally modified in case I need to repeat the merge sequence.
    1) Open the source files.
    2) Create a new empty player.
    3) Copy the individual files to the empty player in the order you wish them played.
4 Save the resulting new file as a stand alone file.
This merged file would play in most versions of QT based apps but maight be a problem in some versions of mobile device players which require content be "flattened" to individual audio and video tracks. (I.e., the QT 7 player can play up to 99 mixed data tracks but some versions of the mobile players do not.)

  • Yet another Helix display issue

I am not sure if this problem is related to previous problem I've reported, so I'm just opening a new thread.
I've noticed that there is a general problem with grey colors display on my machine.
For example, when I scroll my start screen, which has desktop icons with grey background, when the animation stops the greys 'flicker' for a second (change between different shades of grey) before settling on the final colors.
I tried to make a movie showing this, but the effect is quite subtle so it doesn't quite show on camera.
Additionally, there is a banding problem with grey gradients - they are not smooth and the borders between different shades of grey can be seen. Again, I couldn't take good picture of this effect.
I've noticed both problems on the Windows metro UI and the xbox music app. I tried to reproduce them using desktop MS Word by drawing a rectangle with grey gradient fill and moving it around, but the gradient seems smooth and the animation is fine.

I get the same issue. As I posted in other threads, I have tried both an i7 and an i5 model of the helix.. Where I notice this issue the most is in the URL bar for IE 10. When I click refresh or press 'enter', I will sometimes see this flicker in the entire bar.. It looks like a graphical tearing or glitch you would see in a video game when vsync is not properly set. It is definetly isolated to specific parts of the screen. I never saw anything like this on my x220, or my wife's T420/W520 models.

  • Yet another hybrid graphics issue...

    Hi everyone!
I've been finding help (and funny stuff!) on these forums and the wiki for a while, but one problem remains despite Arch's awesomeness: I can't seem to shutdown, reboot or hibernate my laptop properly after switching graphics... It freezes every single time I try it, leaving me with soft lockups and acknowledging nothing but a hard shutdown.
    Some info:
    - Laptop: Acer 5820TG with Intel (integrated) and ATI HD 5650 (dedicated) graphics
    - vgaswitcheroo seems to work:
    [root@funbox tan]# echo "DIGD" > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
    [root@funbox tan]# cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
    0:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0
    1:DIS: :Pwr:0000:01:00.0
    2:DIS-Audio: :Pwr:0000:01:00.1
    [root@funbox tan]# echo "OFF" > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
→ Overheating stops and battery consumption decreases, as expected
However, the "vgaswitcheroo" folder disappears as soon as "OFF" has been echo-ed to "switch":
    [root@funbox tan]# cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
cat: /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
A few things keep surprising me:
    1. KMS does not seem to be enabled for my integrated graphics:
    [root@funbox tan]# cat /sys/module/i915/parameters/modeset
    -1
However, dmesg | grep drm shows this: http://hastebin.com/wawavayena.coffee , which leads me to think that KMS are enabled for both integrated and dedicated graphics...
    2. As you have probably noticed above, the "switch" file initially contains a "DIS-Audio" entry, which I haven't seen anywhere else while browsing to solve this problem. Could this be part of the issue ?
Anyway, thanks in advance for having read all of this, and of course feel free to ask me for more information and/or tell me if I have done or understood something wrong.
    Cheers,
    Tan

  • Yet another slow connection issue

My broadband speed is totally unreliable - and from a quick scan of the forums it seems I'm not the only one!
Much the same as numerous other posters, I'm paying for up to 8meg broadband but typically getting far less than that.  Being in a rural location i appreciate that the local phone exchange probably isn't the most high tech facility in the world, but we're only 2 miles away from it and the speed tester has recorded up to 7meg on occasion.  Today, and this seems to be an increasingly frequent occurence, the speed tester says "your IP profile is 250k".
We had an engineer out 3 weeks ago for the same problem but he could find no faults at the house, said there were no reported faults on the local exchange and the morning before he arrived the IP profile had already been reset to a more usable level.  Rang the call centre again today and after wasting about an hour trying to explain the problem then waiting for him to check things and call me back, then explaining the same thing over again, absolutely nothing has been resolved and they want to send out another engineer.
I have a couple of very simple questions which the customer services team seem incapable of answering:
    1. what is the reason for my IP profile being set so low?
    2. what needs to be done to fix it now?
    3. what needs to be done to stop it happening again?
I don't think the guy I spoke to actually knows what an IP profile is, let alone how to resolve a problem with it.  What is the point of a technical support helpline when the staff quite obviously have no technical knowledge?!

Have spent another hour of my life on the phone to BT helpline this afternoon.
Apparently the reason we hadn't received the call back yesterday was due to a "technical issue" at their end and the request had not been passed on to the engineer team.
Having gone through exactly the same conversation and process as on Tuesday, the helpline chap has run his tests and when pressed told me that he could determine no faults on the line.  An engineer might be able to determine other faults though so he would like to book an appointment for an engineer to call.
Unfortunately, even though I've waited 2 days for this already because they didn't pass on the engineer request the other day, they can't do anything to prioritise the call so I've now got to wait up to another 48hrs for somebody to ring me to book the appointment.  As its Thursday now, that probably means that it could Monday before that happens and therefore probably the middle of next week before the engineer actually gets to the house.  So another week of broadband that is barely faster than dial up.
