Yet another kernal panic issue

I'm having kernal panics too....
My iMac starts up with no startup chime, and then it starts up OK, but then when it gets to the part when the login window comes up, its just a blue screen, and every 3-5 seconds the little "startup spinny thingy" comes up for about 1/5 of a second. I call it the blue-screen of death. I'm pretty sure its the memory, and I'm preforming all the tasks apple says to do on the support page. I've heard of people saying that buying a new keyboard or slapping the mac would work, but it doesn't for me. Usually I just reboot in safe-mode and all goes away, but now I can't boot up in safe mode OR hear a startup chime.

Please read this in conjunction with my responce to your other post.
Have you tried disconnecting all external devices (standfast the Apple mouse and keyboard) and seeing how that goes? You may also wish to try removing the SODIMM RAM and Airport card if present). Some questions for you:
Have you added any hardware/software recently?
What does the Apple Hardware Test disk report? (Here's a more extensive RAM checker.)
Do you have another Mac/External Firewire Hard Disk (they can help troubleshoot).

  • Fixing kernal panic issue necessary before updating OS?

I've been using 10.4.11 for nearly two years and it usually crashes once or twice a day. I've posted my problem on this forum twice and none of the many suggestions solved the problem. I've replaced my hard drive and had the memory checked and reseated. Keeping any peripheral equip unplugged seems to help, but not always. The kernal panics are totally unpredictable. It can happen when any software is running or none. It can crash on Shut Down or Start Up. It's never consistent.
I'm getting a little tired of it, to say the least, and have purchased Leopard with the intention of installing it (Erase and Install option), naively assuming that may solve my problem. But I've recently read that kernal panic issues should be solved BEFORE upgrading system software. Is that true? If so, I may just upgrade to an Intel-based Mac and junk this G-5.

At the very least, you need to be able to run 10.4.11 without having kernel panics. That may mean you have to do an Erase & Install of 10.4 and run without having any other applications installed and see if the machine is still crashing.
Installing 10.5 on a system that already has issues is not a good idea at all.
I took a look at your thread here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8863122
    Possible culprits for your issues:
    Graphics card
    Modem
I see this bit in a couple of your logs:
    com.apple.driver.MotorolaSM56K(1.3.1)@0x9bd000
    dependency: com.apple.driver.AppleI2SModemFamily(1.1.2)@0x9b2000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOSerialFamily(6.0.1d20)@0x3da000
Do you have any software by Motorola installed? (This could be a piece of hardware too; I'm not well-versed in how desktop Macs are put together!)
    This bit also appears:
    com.apple.GeForce(3.4.2)@0xbe4000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.4)@0x398000
And that could indicate problems with your graphics card.

  • Another Kernal Panic Tread

    Hi everyone
I saw that there was a recent thread on kernel panics, and I have studied it and got about as much info as I could glean from the great links in the thread. Kernel panics are new to me, but I am not new to mac. Here's what's happening with my Mac Book Pro.
May 5 - in a meeting - online wirelessly using Firefox latest version, Thunderbird is open as well. - closed MBP - opened a little later and got the message that the macperson sitting next to me recognized as a KP. I restarted - loud beep and restarted ok. I put it out of my mind. Been working fine
May 19 - this morning - same scenario as above except this time I was plugged in for power - waking up from closed and sleep I got another Kernal Panic. I checked panic.log and saw it had happened on April 12 as well, but never before. While I cannot remember what happened on April 12, I do recall that last month I did have a crash when waking from sleep, but did not see an error message.
-I have no usb or firewire devises hooked up, but I am connected to my Epson printer wirelessly through printer sharing and my isight G5.
-I have checked all the crash logs and they are difficult to decipher, but I did not see anything that happened the same on all those days besides the crashes.
-I checked my installer logs and I have not installed anything accept Apple Updates anytime recently. -I verified my disk - all ok.
    -I repaired permissions.
-I downloaded and ran Memtest - it says all is well with my memory (1gb, allthough it said it was testing 443mb). It is not new, but what came with the MBP.
Is there anyone who has heard of Kernel Panics happening during waking from sleep in particular? Can it be that just repairing permissions will have fixed it?
Thanks for reading through all this and let me know what info I can give to help. BTW - here is the report from the panic.log. All three are the same except for the dates:

I see that those are numbers from the panic.log text above, but I do not know what it is that you want - system.log? That is a whole lot of text. From when to when? As I see it looking through the text, the activity was all background stuff. Here it is:

  • USB2 PCI card = Yet Even Another Kernal Panic & Freeze

Its almost "a Tom & Gerry" situation - find the cause of one kernal panic shut down and yet another crops up the very next day without fail. I have had to remove the pci card and have reverted to the previous Wacom driver ! to continue working and stop losing any more studio - downtime !!!
So I wonder .... if its my Mac being so very fussy about PCI cards ?
I have now given up attempting to use a Wacom Tablet plugged into a Lacie NEC chipset PCI card (on a PPC Mac running on Tiger 10.4.11 !

    Hello Tom
It has been an interesting but frustrating experience to date .. esp. as the latest Wacom Tablet Driver V6.1.1-2(RC) ended up tripping out even without the pci card
I am now using only the Macs native USB2 ports:
Rear > (1) keyboard & mouse (2) UPS unit (not using powerchute).
Front > to plug in the Wacom Tablet when required (now running on the previous version Driver V6.1.0-7(RC)
This is the exact card http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=11159
I am way out of my depth as to why
Perhaps your kind expertise may possibly shed some light on this one !
    Kind Regards

  • Kernal Panic Issue

I just installed Snow Leopard 10.6 from Apple's Install DVD on a brand new HD (I did this from another Mac via USB)
I then installed that HD into my wife's iMac (2007, model identifier 7.1). I also upgraded the RAM from 2 to 4GB. All seemed to go very smoothly. It booted up perfectly. Just like a new Mac (welcome animation).
I used Software Update and updated system software to 10.6.5, using the Combo update. Rebooted perfectly.

I started changing preferences, adding printers, etc. All was fine.
Then I started getting a VOLLEY of error messages, many of them in a row, necessitating many OK enters. This happened after changing sharing privileges:
"Impossible to use the system extension. The extension system "/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIfamily.ketx" has not been installed correctly and cannot be used. Try to reinstall it or contact the producer for an update"

Again, this type of message appeared many times about a large number of extensions. It seemed to go away.
Then with the computer shut down, I plugged in a Firewire 800 external hard drive (powered down) to prepare to bring in her data. I rebooted and then I got the following grey screen Kernal Panic message:
panic(cpu0caller 0x55bfa5) "Unable to find driver for this platform ACPI " SourceCsche/xnu/xnu-1504.9.17/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
I keep getting this message, even with the external HD not connected. I put the old RAM back in, assuming the new RAM might be bad. Same problem.
It will not let me start up from Apple System DVD! It kicks out the DVD and shows the grey screen Kernal Panic messagemessage.
I cannot start up using SHIFT key or COMMAND-S key or the COMMAND-V key to use the "fsck -fy" command. Nor can I do a hardware test by holding down the D key at startup. Nor does a PRAM reset help.
    Any help with this?

The initial error you described sounds like the result of a badly performed update:
Frank Cioffi1 wrote:> "Impossible to use the system extension. The extension system "/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIfamily.ketx" has not been installed correctly and cannot be used. Try to reinstall it or contact the producer for an update"

This is the message you get when the owner/permissions of a kext are not correct (usually when someone manually installs a kext without repairing permissions).
panic(cpu0caller 0x55bfa5) "Unable to find driver for this platform ACPI " SourceCsche/xnu/xnu-1504.9.17/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
I haven't seen this before but it sounds like it is related... the problem is to do with accessing things, (permissions)
What exactly did you change when you say "changing sharing privileges"?
Also when booting from the install DVD make sure it's actually trying to boot from the DVD by ether holding down "c" as soon as you press the power button... or holding down "option" aka "alt" and then selecting the DVD from the boot menu.

See if this can be reproduced with just the Apple wired keyboard, mouse, and no third party graphics card (except that which shipped with the Mac), and any display connected.
If it can, then this kind of sounds like a RAM issue. Run the hardware test that came with the computer. While this article refers to Powerbooks, it applies to all g5s as well:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27043?viewlocale=en_US
If no error results from that test, the machine's hard drive is less than 85% full (this is an arbitrary number), the directory appears to be good*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Then I'd point at the RAM.

  • Kernal Panic Issue (Need Help Decoding)

This morning after booting up my Mac Pro, I received a Kernal Panic message on the screen and had to reboot in safe mode.
I disabled any startup 3rd party applications and also disbaled any login startup applications.
After doing this I was able to start up successfully, but after about 10 minutes of running, my screen would fade to black from the top down and then the machine would restart itself.
I did this a couple of times and thought I would post here to see if anyone could help decode my kernal panic info.

I always like to see the simple hardware profile / system profile (always leave out serial number though)
Is Netflix or Silverlight using Java? did you see the other user earlier today with Q about those also?
System is nearly 7 yrs old, FBDIMMs go bad, the original graphic cards are due for upgrade if you have not.
Still have your OEM DVDs? Apple Hardware Test is on one.
Also, consider installing 10.6 on another fresh format drive and do all the updates and 'watch' before making more changes. You cna use Setup or Migration Assistant. Lion runs well on these systems too.

I'd start with a pair or two of the FBDIMMs, probably over due and these are top quality, $32 (I gradually replaced all mine to have 16GB now).

  • Yet Another P7N Diamond Issue

Apart from the ongoing problem I am still having in this thread I now have yet another dilemma. I bought a BFG 9800 GT OC2 as a upgrade and installed it the usual way ensuring I connected the 6 pin connector too and the pc does not boot up even after several attempts
Instead I am getting a strange beeping pattern one long beep then some shorts
Please if someone could shed some light I would greatly appreciate it even if its regarding my previous issue.

    http://www.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?language=en&act=detail&tbcate=22&id=2543
I use the above Cooler Master PSU, zero issues. Has 4 pci-e connectors, so it's ready for quad sli if I ever want to go that route with my P6n Diamond. Has lots of different connection options, highly rated PSU. Not all Cooler Master PSUs underperform, just have to know what you're buying. The above supply also has 2 8 pin connectors so for instance when my GTX 295 arrives I'll have no trouble (card uses 6/8 pin). Reviews also can be helpful.

  • Also having Kernal Panic issues

I am also having issues with a Kernal Panic. My new refurbished MBP was working fine for a couple of days and now all of a sudden I got a couple yesterday and have gotten 3 today. I called tech support this morning and we checked for errors and reset the permissions. If you could help me with the logs as well that would maybe give an Idea of where to start..thanks. Below is the logs. Also the only thing I have put on the machine is Skype and I also transferred pictures and Itunes library from my pc based laptop to this machine using a usb flash drive. I dont know if that would have anything to do with it.

Chalk me up as having this increasingly frequent error as well. I never noticed the problem for over a year but upon having the machine returned after some repairs I seem to get it all the time. I'm averaging once a day but often multiple times in a day. Mine seems to be tied to Safari and high internet use (just surmising).

  • Another Kernal panic.... your thoughts?

I'm short of ideas on this one.....
The note in the panic report regarding "enable preemption" means that the system is being directed to cease one process that it is currently involved in, and allow a second process to take precidence in the processing order. That would be like, the video stream has begun, the system is processing the stream to be seen, but the command to process the accompanying audio jumps in, saying "Me first" and the system freezes- unable to complete the tasks requested.
A healthy system OS should be more able to handle the processing requests.
Tied in with the healthy OS, is a healthy hard drive. If the hard drive is getting "long in the tooth", has data errors or corruption, is reaching capacity, or has directory damage, these processing problems can occur.
Using The Disk Utility from the OS X install disc to repair your hard drive directory may provide improvement in the performance.
Freeing up hard drive space, or increasing memory may also help with buffering the incoming data, thus improving performance.

  • Kernal Panic Issue 2013 rMBP

So I was casually using my 2013 rMBP today and all of the sudden everything froze and it forced me to shut down. It is only a few months old so this definitely concerns me since I have never had an issue with any of my Apple products before. Does anyone know if this panic report is just a one time fluke or should I take several hours out of my life and go sit at a genius bar? Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • Yet another CC billing issue

I had to update the credit card on file with my Creative Cloud account. Since then, the card has not been billed. The last payment was made on October 6. The information on file is correct, and has been for quite some time (even with multiple attempts to re-update it). Now access to my Adobe products has been suspended. I tried calling Adobe multiple times ... once hanging up after 45 minutes of being on hold, another time choosing the call-back option and never receiving a call back, and finally getting the recording that the wait time was between 90 and 120 minutes. One time I got through on chat, but after the unsuccessful session I was told to call Customer Support. Yet a connection to sales was near instantaneous.
These wait times are completely unacceptable. I understand that the attack on your servers has caused big headaches, but hire some temporary support staff to get through this.
Please, Adobe, help me out. I need to use your products for work.
    -Jon-

    Hi Jon,
I am so sorry for the inconvenience  faced by you, please provide me your contact number, if possible with an alternate contact number. I will follow up the issue.
I have send an email to you also, please respond.
    Regards,

    HI, ken.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein. While you may have done some of the things cited in the FAQ, the order in which they are done can be critically important, hence the roadmap.
If you post the panic log, I will endeavor to see what it can tell us. Instructions on posting the panic log are also found in my FAQ.
    Good luck!
