Yosemite 10.10.2 and USB hub issue

Hi there,
I got a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite last December and bought a USB hub (four-port) on Jan 3rd. I was using it for one month with
OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 without any problems.
On Feb 4th I switch to OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and I started to have 2-4 times the following issue per day:
- mac frozen (I cannot use the keyboard or the mouse) but I see that the clock is working. No other way that a hard reset.
I did check memory and hard drive and everything is ok
- for one week I did use the USB hub and didn't have any issue
- I started again and less than 24h hour later I got a similar issue !
I am not 100% sure this related to 10.10.2 but before with 10.10.1  I had no issue ! I am not sure to understand how a USB hub can crash a Mac.
I try to look a the Consol application but couldn't really identify a common issue a the time of the issue but maybe some messages like that :
Any idea or suggestion ?
Thanks
Cheers

    Need a fix!

Hopefully this helps:  I had one plugin (Vectorworks) which I deleted and now it opens.  Try deleting any plugins if you have any if you've run out of options. Took me hours to figure that out.
On a side note, Yosemite sucks.  Spread the word.

  • IPad 2 iOS 5 Windows 7 USB hub issue solution

I thought I would post this message to help those running Windows 7 (or other versions of Windows) that might be having "USB Device Unrecognized" issues with their iPad when going to iOS 5.  In my case it is an iPad 2.
Long story short... When upgrading to iOS 5 using iTunes 10.5, if you are getting "USB Device Unrecognized" error messages or Windows has trouble installing the USB driver with your iPad (or maybe another iDevice) and that device is connected to a USB hub of some sort that may have worked previously under iOS 4.x or earlier, the solution for me was to connect the iPad to one of my PC's main USB ports (as in the ones directly connected to the motherboard). For whatever reason, Windows is not able to recognize my iPad 2 running the first release version of iOS 5 when it is connected to the USB ports on my Dell 2408 LCD panel's hub. Even though this was never an issue with iOS 4.x
    More detail...
I am running Windows 7 (64 bit) with all the latest updates and I had an iPad 2 running iOS 4.3.5 and I always docked it and my iPhone 4 to my PC using the USB hub on my Dell 2408 LCD panel.  I NEVER had any USB issues with either device until going to iTunes 10.5 & iOS 5.
The issue came up when I was doing a restore of the iOS 5 GM (which is the same as the final release of iOS 5) to my iPad 2.  When I started the restore, the iPad 2 gets reset to DFU mode (or whatever mode it gets in to start the restore) and at that point Windows complained about the USB Device being unrecognized.  After I gave up I told iTunes to do a regular restore back to the previous version (4.3.5) and Windows had no issues seeing my iPad and doing the restore connected to the same USB port.
So there appeared to be something about iTunes 10.5 or iOS 5 causes Windows to not be able to install the correct driver and have "USB Device Unrecognized" errors when my iPad 2 was connected to my Dell monitors USB hub.  I should mention that my iPhone 4 running iOS 5 has no problems being connected to my Dell monitors USB hub.  I tried all the suggestions that Apple has on their support section.  Restarting the Apple Mobile Device service, Uninstalling the bad USB device under the Device Manager in Windows and rescanning for devices, un-installing and then reinstalling iTunes 10.5 and the other Apple software etc... etc... Windows still could not find the correct USB driver and couldn't recognize the device.  Nothing worked or when it did it only lasted for a very short time.  One of the 4 ports on my Dell finally installed the correct drivers but then it stopped working.
The solution was for me to use the built in USB ports that are on my PC itself.  After I did that, Windows has no issues installing the proper driver for my iPad 2 and seeing it once I used the PC's USB ports.

Yes, Apple has caused people to go through massive panic, anxiety and wasted time by not coming out and telling us about this problem. They must know about it. How can we tell them? Now I understand why it took me 50 tries to upgrade to OS5. We all got the same crazy errors that caused us to reinstall iTunes, turn off our firewalls, buy new USB cables and basically waste tons of time and energy, when the solution was very simple. Plug your device into a USB port on your computer.
After years of using a peripheral USB hub successfully it's no wonder we all started freaking out and thinking it was a major problem. Yes, I'm blowing off some steam, but I've been an Apple fanatic for a long time and I'm not happy about their lack of response to this issue.

  • Airport Extreme and USB Hub + Printer and Hard Drives

I have been using my Airport Extreme with a USB hub with 2 external hard drives and one printer for a while now and everything has been going fine. However, recently, the hard drives have stopped registering when I have the USB hub plugged in. I have plugged the hub directly into my computer with everything attached and it works fine but the moment I plug the hub into the Airport, nothing shows up except that the printer still works.
Does anyone know what is wrong? Thanks!

Hi, I've had this same problem now for more than 1 year, and nothing had solved it, until recently. I think I know what the problem is.
It turns out that not all USB 2.0 hard drive enclosures are the same. I had been using "Metalgear Substance II" enclosures for my 500-GB drives, and I had assumed all along that these were fine... I had assumed that one USB 2.0 enclosure was as good as the next USB 2.0 enclosure. WRONG!!!
By accident, I noticed that the drive-to-drive copy times from MetalGear USB 2.0 boxes was about 22 hours for a full 450-GByte transfer of information, while placing the SAME drive into a MacAlley enclosure reduced the copy time down from 22 hours to 6 hours... About 3.5 times faster!!! This means that the piece of crud Metalgear boxes I had been using for my network drives were ssssllllooowwww.
A big bright light blinked on in my head regarding my issues and problems with the Apple Airport Extreme Base-station and all of the problems I'd had with multiple drives, the AEBS locking up etc.. All of my issues had been associated with using the el-cheapo Metalgear enclosures.
As soon as I replaced the Metalgear USB boxes with MacAlley boxes, everything started to work great. No more issues with my Airport locking up. None. Problem fixed. Problem solved.
I can only assume that NOT ALL USB 2.0 BOXES ARE THE SAME. USB 2.0 does not mean that the transfer rates will actually be at 480-mbps. Quality matters. DO NOT USE METALGEAR BOXES WITH APPLE EXTREME. There may be other brands with suck just as much. I can vouch for the MacAlley boxes. They work great... and there may be other boxes that work too. There must be some issue with Apple Airport Base Station timing out on slower USB 2.0 crapola equipment... something that causes it to hang.
Anyway, I hope this helps. My problems are solved since going to the MacAlley enclosures.

  • DELL 2713 USB hub Issue on MacBook Pro Retina 15

    Hello,
I have a new MacBook pro retina 15" and Dell 2713 monitor.
the Dell works fine with the MacBook with supplied DP cable.
BUT the USB hub doesn't work, the monitor is connected to the computer with original dell usb 3.0 cable.
Note: on PC & win7, it works fine
How can I find a proper drivers for this built-in USB 3.0 hub.
    thanks,
    Tomer

The Retina models are full of flaws. You have found one of them. For some reason the discrete graphic card is being shut off in Windows and you are now using the built in Intel HD Graphics 4000. Why I have no idea.

  • External Hard Drive and USB Hubs

I need some help. I have a 320GB External Hard Drive which uses 2 USB Ports. I also have an external keyboard and mouse, using USB. I first purchased a 'passive' USB hub and the Mac was unable to recognize the External Hard Drive. So, I purchased a USB Hub powered by AC. The External Hard Drive lights up, but the Computer does not recognize it. Is there a recommended USB Hub that will allow the external hard drive to make the hand shake with my MacBook ?

Check with the drive manufacturer to determine if there is an alternative power source for the drive. I've never liked self powered drives and that so many made today require two USB ports is just one of the reasons why.

  • PPC Update 10.4.7 and USB hub problems

    Hi,
After installing the PPC 10.4.7 combo update on my PowerPC G5 dual 2.7 GHz (4GB RAM) I have problems with my USB hub. The update seemed to have been installed properly (two reboots and no error messages) but since then my Kensington track ball does no longer work after power on. I have to detach and reattach the USB hub to reactivate the trackball. The problem does not occur after a restart (only after a power off/on cycle).
The USB hub did work before the update and I did not change the configuration after the update.
I hope someone can help me with this as it is very frustrating for me to crawl under my desk to detach and reattach the USB hub every time I turn on my mac...

I can't help you, but I wanted to say that I have a similar problem. After a sleep/wake, my hub doesn't wake up. I have done a bunch of troubleshooting, including buying a new hub, which did not solve the problem (I took it back). When I reboot, all is back to normal. I have a 2001 Powermac G4 with a Sonnet Allegro USB 2.0 card that I added, over a year ago. It has worked fine since I bought it. Now, after upgrading to OS 10.4.7, I have this sleep/wake problem with the USB hub (Keyspan).
I have checked the ports on the USB card and I have found that at least one port is dead when I wake the machine back up. I can switch over devices around and they work in the remaining three ports on the board. The hub, however, does not work at all in any port, until after a reboot. There must be some special signal that the board sends out to the hub that resets it after a boot. I don't know. It's very frustrating, though. I don't like waiting for a reboot, which is why I have gotten in the habit of using sleep.
Maybe someone else has some idea what might be causing this problem? It could be just a coincidence that it started soon after the OS update. Maybe the board just decided to go bad at this particular time...?

  • Airport Extreme and USB hub

Okay I connected a hub to my USB on the airport extreme. Now I can see both hard drives however I get an IP address conflict and the network basically shuts down. Is there something I am missing here?

Try reading the entire conversation, Duane, and you'll realize that I'm fully aware of the fact that he's talking about a USB hub. And let me point out the fact that your misunderstanding makes no sense because even if I had thought he was talking about an ethernet hub, an ethernet hub has no IP address of its own.
His problem is that he gets an error message indicating that an IP that has already been allocated is being used by another device. A USB hub gets no IP nor does a simple USB external drive. Still, when he plugs in the hub that error message pops up. Why? The only explanation I could come up with is that one of the drives he is attaching to the USB hub isn't a standard external USB drive.
Have I connected all the dots for you okay?

  • Macbook Pro and USB HUB

Let me start with this. My Macbook Pro (4 yrs old) has only 2 usb ports, so I went to buy a USB HUB. I bought Pentagram HUB USB 4P Passive [P 1224-3] , I plug it in. Small green light on it is on. Then I plug the printer, wireless mouse receiver and a WD Passport 160GB. None of the above are working. (The printer has it's own power cable). Where's the problem. Is it the HUB or something else?
    Please help.

It's the hub. "Passive" is the key to your problem.
An "active" or "powered" hub prevents devices from drawing more power than the ports can deliver. Your big consumer is the WD passport drive. You're powering not only the electronics but also an electric motor.
If you mainly need the hub for working in a home or office environment, always go for the powered type. The passive hub may work for travel as long as you limit the number of devices.

  • USB hub issues

I'm not sure exactly when this started happening but I ran out of usb ports so I purchased a usb hub. Now every time I shut down my iMac it appears to go off but when I try to turn it on the next morning and I push the power button, nothing happens. I have to hold the power button in for 10-15 seconds (to completely power it off I'm assuming) and then when I push power again it boots up. I've also had connection problems with devices running through the hub. I've replaced the hub with a brand new powered hub and I have the same problems. If I plug the devices directly into the iMac it works fine, I just don't have enough ports. Is this a hub problem or an OSX problem with usb hubs? I don't remember having this problem pre-Leopard.

Since I've posted this, I've noticed if I unplug my hub before shutting down, at next bootup it boots up fine.
    Devices plugged into hub:
    MS Intellimouse Explorer
USB Extension cable (for flash drives)
    USB Cable for digital camera
    hp Scanjet 4370
The hub is a Cyberpower 7 port hub CP-H720P with power adapter.
The 3 ports on my iMac are:
    Canon ip6000d printer
    LaCie External 320gb hard drive
    Cable to USB hub
The three ports on the mac are always plugged in. I stated above that I unplugged the usb hub before shutting down last night and it booted up fine this morning. This leads me to believe OSX is still powering the hub which is why it doesn't shutdown all the way. When I went from Tiger to Leopard I did an upgrade not a fresh load, I'm thinking that might be the next step.

Think that it has to be a single device and is all down to power requirement of device which must not exceed 200mA, so HDD would need to be powered.

  • IPhone and USB hub ....

    Hi,
Is there a reason why my iPhone does not show up when connected to my USB 2.0 hub ??? If connected to my iMac it shows up ...
    Thanks in advance.

Apple usually prevents problems that simple. My computer's 3 USP ports are already crowded ... Plugging my iPhone to my iMac is a plug/unplug situation.
So plug your other devices into the hub and reserve one dedicated USB port for the iPhone.
I would have also thought Apple would have implemented a feature that exists already in most of cell phones, a wireless connection to sync with the computer. No wireless and no USB hub connection.
The iPhone is not most cell phones. It is a unique piece with unique features. If it did everything that other cells did the same way there would be no need for it.
If I add to that the absence of a search feature in iCal and Address Book, the fact that they are no notes already implemeted, I would say they are letting go features bit by bit. Design is good and can get iPhone sold, but we usually think of Apple more like a genial feature driven architect.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.htm.
Narrowing us to use only one cellular company to get a share of our ATT's (or other cell phone companies) monthly cell fees is the biggest insult to the Apple community. In business we call this a «kick back» and it is normally badly perceived. You sell your product a decent price and with honest and upfront conditions and customers will respect and be loyal. I really don't appreciate this move from Apple and me and my family are loyal users since 1984. Considering asiatic markets are potential buyers and can give Apple big profits, Apple can afford to offer a unlocked iPhone to the world.
Its not uncommon for a cell to be locked to a carrier upon initial release. In addition to this, there are a few features on the iPhone (Visual Voicemail) that required the carriers to upgrade their current systems. This could not have been offered with an unlocked release.

  • Sun Ray 2 - Connecting to monitor with USB Hub issues

    Hi,
We recently purchased 21 Sun Ray 2 devices and 21 Dell 1909W monitors with built in USB ports to go with them.
This combination works great with 17 of the Sun Ray 2 devices, i.e. mouse and keyboard connected to USB ports on monitor then A to B USB cable running from Sun Ray 2 to Dell monitor.
However, on 4 of the setups this combination fails to work, and after troubleshooting we identified neither the Sun Ray 2 or Dell monitors were faulty. Our support agents suggested since Dell could use a different USB hub 'engine' for their monitors (Even the same model of monitor) this may cause problems being picked up by the Sun Ray 2 devices.
After trying out a box of spare A to B USB cables we had lying around spare, surprisingly 3 of the 4 before non working devices are now working. However, if the 'magic' leads were to be stolen etc we would have a problem again!
Are there any sorts of firmware updates etc for the Sun Ray 2 devices that would mean we could get all the monitors working with the standard Dell provided A to B USB cables? At the moment the optical light on the mouse will 'blink' and then nothing else will happen (It does 'blink' on the working setups before getting full power).
    Many thanks :)
    John

no I tried with bro's iPod which have 4.x firmaware and it works fine. So I guess it's safe to assume this is problem because of firmware
