Z index bug

Hello! need a bit -of-help.
Under browser compatability, I get the following message:
Positioned containers define a new stacking order, even when the computed z-index of the container is auto. This can cause positioned children of the container to appear above other positioned elements on the page when they should not.
Affects: Internet Explorer 6.0, 7.0
Likelihood: Likely
How do i make this right?
Thanks, Tony

Maybe this will help clear up any misunderstanding you have about declared positioning as well as the use of z-indexing:
The actual display of a positioned element will depend on whether or not it's parent element also has a declared position or not.
z-indexing ONLY works with elements that have a declared position.
Using a declared position like absolute tells and browser to take that element out of the natural flow and do something different with it. So you've got the browser parsing in order from top to bottom, then throwing in some elements that are completely out of the flow.... they can be very hard to control, because there are special rules that apply to elements with declared positions.
The least understood of those rules is what I call the "Parent Rule". Giving an element a declared position like relative or absolute can have huge differences in how that element is actually displayed depending on whether or not the PARENT of that element also has a declared position.
So a div which is position:absolute for example will display one way if it's parent also has a declared position and it will display in a completely different manner if it's parent does NOT have a declared position... to review:
If a div's parent container DOES NOT also have a declared position, the child <div> will do 1 of 2 things.
If position:relative, it will position as desired but space will be left as though that element was still in the natural flow. So you may move the 500 X 100 element down and over, but a 500 X 100 space will be left, as though it was still there.
If position:absolute, child is positioned relative to browser window and that position does not change even if window contracts or expands.
So be sure to give a declared position to both the parent and the child <div>.
Neglecting to follow this rule is the main reason why the use of declared positioning fails.
And just one more point, almost never is it necessary to use a declared position, and that method certainly should not be used for general page layout.
But if and when a special situation comes up that you really do need z-indexing... then of course you will also have to use a declared position. Understanding the "Parent Rule" will make working with z-indexing and declared positions much easier and more successful.
Best wishes,

  • Gallery Demo and IE7 Z-Index Bug

    What is the workaround that corrects the problem in IE7
    whereby Spry's Grow function shows enlarged images behind (not on
    top) of their adjacent micro thumbs. Thanks in advance.

    I'm confused. The example for Spry gallery DOESN'T use an
    anchor tag around the thumbnails... In your article and in some
    posts, you say that the structure is:
    <div id="thumbnails">
    <div class="thumbnail">
    <a href="image.jpg"><img src="image.jpg"
    /></a>
    </div>
    </div>
    However, I downloaded Spry_1_6_1_022408 and copied the
    example thumbnails element & content verbatim:
    <div id="thumbnails" spry:region="dsPhotos dsGalleries
    dsGallery">
    <div spry:repeat="dsPhotos"
    onclick="HandleThumbnailClick('{ds_RowID}');"
    onmouseover="GrowThumbnail(this.getElementsByTagName('img')[0],
    '{@thumbwidth}', '{@thumbheight}');"
    onmouseout="ShrinkThumbnail(this.getElementsByTagName('img')[0]);">
    <img id="tn{ds_RowID}" alt="thumbnail for {@thumbpath}"
    src="galleries/{dsGalleries::@base}{dsGallery::thumbnail/@base}{@thumbpath}"
    width="24" height="24" style="left: 0px; right: 0px;" />
    </div>
    <p class="ClearAll"></p>
    </div>
    NO ANCHOR TAG. Even if you look in the generated source,
    there's no link surrounding the thumbnail image.
    So I guess I am unclear as to how to apply your fix? Using
    the 1.6.1 version, the sample function code you show doesn't match,
    nor does it seem to reflect your modifications...
    Any ideas? I managed to track down your post about the bug in
    IE 7 (it exists in IE6, too) [the demo link (
    http://mad.sweepingdesign.com/index.html)
    goes to a page that says "It works!"]
    The actual article can be found here, though the demo link
    shows nothing:

    It's how businesses work.
    I'm sorry this is wrong and completely absurd. My phone is fine. I have zero performance problems, neither does anyone else I know. Whatever the cause of the people who do, it is not wide spread.
    If this was wide spread then of course Apple would want to fix it. They release a new phone no matter what, to say that they know and are purposely doing nothing is immature.

  • Does the newest RH have the output-to-Word index bug?

    Before wasting any more time trying to get the 12 pages of
    index to match the 450plus-page document, or learning to, in a few
    days, how to manually index a large Word doc, does the new releases
    of RH index outputs PROPERLY? Just upgrading may be the simplest
    thing (here in the Corporate world) than figuring it out on my own.
    Please let me know ASAP!

    First I want to thank Peter Grange for taking the time to
    assist. Even on the weekend! Thanks again Peter!
    Problem solved - yes Harvey, I even took my level 4 headings
    to level 2. This helped, but not completely; that's not the
    solution. Here's what I did.
    I bailed out of RoboHelp. (!)
    I just could not make it make sense and then started studying
    more on Word's index, and the information available online.
    For example, Towson University has a great PDF on Concordance
    Files in Word.
    Procedure to get a workable index in Word:
    1. Use RH to generate an index. Edit and manipulate as needed
    2. Output entire job in to Word.
    3. Review and confirm Word document.
    4. Took the Word index, copied to new file, stripped out the
    page numbers and made a 2 column table of it.
    5. Copied column 1 to column 2 (second colum can be used to
    change actual index text display).
    6. Created a concordance with that data, that will later be
    entered into Word's "Index, AutoMark" as a file.
    7. Closed Word - no need to save document.
    8. Went back to RH and reloaded the Job.
    9. Completely delete all index entries and save this way (no
    index).
    10. Again output this job to Word.
    11. Open document in Word.
    12. Now do my usual RH induced need-to-repaginate (because of
    image bug) and add necessary page breaks.
    13. Go to Word's Index feature and enter concordance file,
    and place index where desired.
    14. Add header that says "Index:" ( or whatever you want to
    heading the Index with.)
    15. Repaginate TOC and Index and "Whallah"! All page numbers
    now match the TOC and Index.
    Plus now the index is keyed to the PAGE not the TOPIC!

  • IE7 z-index bug

    My Spry drop down menu appears behind the text on my pages in
    IE7, because of the apparently well-known bug in IE7's
    implementation of positioned elements and stacking contexts (
    explanation
    here).
    Is there a solution, or will I have to create a different
    menu system for IE, and do some browser-sniffing? Bit of a drag,
    that...
    Here's the problem in action (if you use IE7...) go
    here
    and click on the "MENU" icon in the top left of the screen...
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Gaurav! Thanks for your reply.
    I do indeed use a lot of Javascript, but it's all
    encapsulated ("namespaced") and so it shouldn't be interfering with
    anything!
    Maybe I tweaked something in the Spry code that I shouldn't
    have, but I can't imagine what...
    I will try rebuilding the Spry menu, as you suggest.

  • Latent OS Bugs in iPad OS 3.2?  - Crash/Reboot with Search & Photo Scroll

    I now have an issue with 'Search iPad' causing a crash & reboot on my ipad. It will also crash/reboot when scrolling through my Photos. What I have found is that once you install somewhere between 850-900 Apps that this starts failing and is first letter search term sensitive. (i.e. So far I found the key first letter to search which seems to provoke the crash is: F, P, S. Other search terms starting with other letters may work.) The Photo Scroll crash/reboot I have not tried to debug yet but I only have 383 photos loaded right now.
    Bottom line it looks like the same indexing bug in the iPhone OS 3.1.2 is also latent in in the iPad OS 3.2(7B367). Hopefully this, as well as the wifi & intermittent video playback crash problem will be fixed soon.
    Is there a beta test code patch/fix for this?

    Hey, all -
    Having the same problem, but there's a workaround. I know everybody wants an official fix, but you also probably want to see your photos in the meantime regardless.
    Note that I don't know what to do about the problem with searching when you have 800+ apps installed. I didn't even think you could install that many. As far as I know, then, this only works for Photos (better than nothing, right?).
    Here's what you do - it's actually really simple...
    1. Instead of scrolling down through your photos, select a photo - any photo - without scrolling.
    2. When the photo is loaded, look at the bottom of the screen. There should be what looks Ike a series of little boxes. These little boxes are your friend.
    3. Touch and drag along the strip of boxes. You'll notice that they're actually the universe's smallest thumbnails, and that they expand when you touch and drag (not unlike the OS X dock when you mouse over icons and they "magnify").
    4. Scroll along until you're getting to the photos you want to see. Then just let go. The Photo app will take you to that photo. Even if it's a photo you couldn't reach by scrolling down in the traditional fashion, you'll still be able to get to it.
    5. If you want to look at other "nearby" photos, you can use that thumbnail strip along the bottom again, OR you can just tap the back button to return to the album. Photos will return to the usual thumbnail view (the one that's crashing for some of us), but it will drop you off in the vicinity of the photo you just looked at. For example, if you followed the steps above and dragged your finger all the way to the right to load the last photo in your album, then the back button will return you to the normal thumbnail view, but you'll be looking at the last page of photos in your album.
    I hope that makes sense. If it doesn't, then just try the first four steps. It'll make sense to you after that.
    I've been able to view all my photos since learning this little trick.
    I've been meaning to plug my iPad in and use the app development tools to look at diagnostic information that'd help me understand why it's crashing. If I get around to it, I'll come back and post what I find. My guess is that, if you have enough photos, and if you're scrolling fast enough, the Photos app is using a lot of resources to load thumbnails without unloading the ones that have already scrolled off the screen. In other words, I think that quickly scrolling through a large library leads to the Photos app using too much memory, forcing a reboot (apps are supposed to be designed to respond to system warnings about low memory - if they don't respond to the warnings and continue to use up system resources, the system will sometimes reboot itself).
    Hope this helps

  • Layering with z-index

    Looking for some guidance on using z-index in my CSS to position the YouTube video on the home page of this site behind the drop down navigation. It is not a problem on my Mac (Firefox & Safari), where the layering is correct, but on my iPhone and my client's PC, the video is in front of the navigation.

    I have tried positioning with z-index, but seem not to be accomplishing this correctly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

    You need to position the z-index element for it to work.  Recommend using absolute or relative as position:fixed doesn't work well on iPhones/iPads.

  • Is it only me? TM + Indexing

    I am new to TM.
    The set up went very well. No problem whatsoever.
    But a couple of things:
    - It is backing up every hour for some minutes, 5/10 which means 10/20% of any hour I have this noise + the bus filled with data and the cpus are used. Is it possible to run it every 3/4 hours? and have less back ups a day?
    - then there is an Indexing going on since I run TM and it never ends. Now it says it'll take 229 hours to finish. 229 hour? Is TM & Indexing the "same" cat running after its own tail? Or just an indexing bug? Maybe it's because I use the computer, like 24/24 always cpu at 100% so indexing never catches up.
    any comment or insight?
    thank you.

    Hi,
    the point is not that spotlight didn't finish.
    The point is that TimeMachine+Spotlight is a cat biting its own tail!!!
    So this morning it had finished.
    I started video encoding again. It will go for another 3 days in a row ok ..? ..
    Then did TimeMachine backups, and Spotlight indexing with the resources it has at the moment whle the CPUs are busy simply takes longer to index than the time between backups, leading to a indexing queue.
    In other words, if u use the cpus and have some storage to backup with TM, then spotlight will always be ON!!!!!!
    My set up:
    2 hard disks to backup:
    1 - working files 400GB
    2 - OSX boot drive + personal docs and stuff 100GB
    Computer is the newest iMac 2.4 24" with 4GB ram. More than that I can't.
    Result=Spotlight always indexing for days until u use the cpus. And it takes 4-6% up to 30% of resources!!!!!!!!! Unbearable!! And these computers are already slow enough !!!!!!!!!!!!!! slow? yes slow! because they didn't want to use core 2 duo with 4 cpus, but they wanted to use notebook stuff on the imac.
    In other words I think all the macs now on sale but the macpro will have the same problem if you use TM+Spotlight=When u use the cpus indexing is never able to keep up with TM new backups to index.
    The spotlight index is not corrupted. it simply is a cat biting its own tail. This is actually something apple people must know about. IT's obvious if cpus/drive speed are what they are today.
    So everyone please try. Have OSX boot drive 100GB + 400GB more to index, run full cpus encoding come back after a couple of hours and see the indexing going on ...
    What if I turn off indexing for TimeMachine? Will it work correctly but slower? Or wouldn't work?
    Anybody any comment?
    thank you.

  • CS3 Indexing - Is it safe yet?

    I searched the forums and found lots of older messages about problems with CS3 and indexing bugs. Are these old issues or still relevant?
    I just downloaded CS3 update 5.0.3 which says it addresses indexing problems. Should I believe it? I have to have a finish a 14 chapter index this weekend and have half of it finished in CS3. I could apply the patch and keep going or ... what? :-)
    TIA

    Thanks all for contributing. Unfortunately, my experience with desktop publishing software reaches back to the days of Aldus PageMaker running on Windows runtime and Ventura Publisher for DOS. So, there's an ingrained distrust of "fixes" that end up breaking other things. Hence my apprehension and searching for assurances before I jumped in. That being said, here's the results of my experience.
    Considering the magnitude of the problem with indexing, I'm really surprised that I didn't hear from any of the members who complained so much in the earlier archived threads. Anyway, unpatched, the program is useless for "generating" an index from multiple docs. You can do the marking functions for each chapter, but it doesn't compile correctly. It may look like it is, but it definitely isn't. Apply the CS3 5.0.3 patch and it works like a charm!
    I finished the index on Sat., night. However, I could have been finished that afternoon or even Fri. afternoon had I known what I know now. I hope that my experience helps someone in the future.

  • Disappearing horizontal spry menu in IE.

    Hi,
    I dont usually have any issues with spry menu, but this time the website was going to have lots of pages, and i wanted to be able to update the menu once so I made the menu as a library item. It looks good but in IE it shows bugs.
    The whole menu showing up white in IE and only when you roll over it does it show the particular menu selection. Then I found a form on here that told me to change the position to "relative" now I have a new issue where the whole menu including the sub menu's has pushed all the content down and there is a big space and in the browser comparability it shows me its a "z-index bug". • Random segfaults when doing an xupdate at the container level

    I am having an error where updates to a container are causing segfaults in weird ways. I am on 2.4.16 with the latest patch applied. my query is attempting to mark a node as 'empty'...
    > for $q in collection('dbxml:/rx.dbxml')//results[text()="http://myurl.com/results"] return (replace value of node $q with '')
    Its replicable on certain containers, but not others, making me think that an index is out of whack or something weird is going on, but doc() updates still work so I'm not really sure why the container keyword would be different. All containers are configured exactly the same way, its just that some won't let me run this query without barf city. To top off the weirdness, the transactions are actually successful in the end once I get the db back up and recovered from the segv.
    I have some ideas but none of them really explain the kinda sporadic nature of the issue.
    1) I am creating a query context before using this call - should I have an update context as well?
    2) Could an index be hosed somewhere? Why would that happen? (disclaimer - I've been through several migrations and seen similar bugs along the way)
    3) Could the fact that the text in the node is a url make it unhappy?
    I have pasted a backtrace below of where the segv happens if it helps at all.
    Thanks in advance!

    In cases like these it's best to give more detail, such as:
    o platform/compiler/version
    RHEL 4 64bit/gcc4.1.2. using python/swig wrapperso container type, index type
    default container types, with these options: DB_CREATE|DB_EXCL|DBXML_TRANSACTIONAL. indexes are all node indexeso indexes on the container
    5 node indexes, very simpleo concurrent vs single-threaded access
    single writer multiple readers -> we are having really good concurrency success so I don't think that' the issue. I'm following the rule to the T hereo configuration specified on environment and containers
    containers created with DB_CREATE|DB_EXCL|DBXML_TRANSACTIONAL and opened with DBXML_TRANSACTIONAL. environment. environments are created with DB_CREATE|DB_THREAD|DB_INIT_LOCK|DB_INIT_LOG|DB_INIT_MPOOL|DB_INIT_TXN and the config is below
    environment.set_lk_detect(DB_LOCK_MINWRITE)
    environment.set_lk_max_lockers(20000)
    environment.set_lk_max_locks(10000)
    environment.set_lk_max_objects(5000)
    environment.set_lg_max(104857600)
    environment.set_lg_bsize(20971520)
    environment.set_lg_regionmax(41943040)
    environment.set_timeout(3000000, DB_SET_TXN_TIMEOUT)That sort of thing. Intermittent problems are often related to either unintended concurrency in an application or uninitialized variables. The latter can often be detected using valgrind if your are on a Linux platform. It also wouldn't hurt to reindex the problem containers to see if that has an effect.
    I will try reindexing in a staging environment, but this database is pretty big and they are live so its not really an option to reindex all the time (plus its not like the indexing can really happen while people are using it which makes it difficult). I've already dealt with a similar indexing bug in the past and I thought the latest version fixed that problem. I will see what valgrind can pull up but like I said I'm relying on python/swig and valgrind can be pretty misleading with PyMallocThanks for sending a stack but it's not all that illuminating. Another thing is to know if the issue is reproducible in a debug build where you'd get a better stack.
    I did a fresh install already with the latest patches and that didn't solve the issue. the forum has been really good at diagnosing without taking it to the debug build level so if things get bad or if you need more info I'll take it to that level but perhaps someone has similar issues or it rings a bell that we can explore first

  • Ordering jQuery Content in a Master File and a Dependent Page

    Hey guys,
    OT situation but thought you may be able to help.
    I have a Mega Menu in a Template and Slider on a Dependent Page. The Mega Menu is going behind the page content. How can I properly order this?
    Rob

    Actually, the master has a table and the page content is in a lower cell. The menu is a Superfish menu and the slider is Accordionza. In FF, things look ok except when there is a movie in a slider div. In IE, it is wrong, regardless.
    Found THIS to be an answer for most content: http://www.onlinecasinodemar.com/webdesign/superfish-jquery-menu-ie-z-index-bug/
    On the Vimeo video, the issue was old embed code. The iframe code works. Hope this helps someone else.

  • Menu Bar SubMenu position issue

    Hi,
    I have an horizontal menu on my site which works, but I'm
    starting a new version of the site and there my submenus display in
    a weird position (in IE only) and with a transparent background.
    I read about the z-index bug, but couldn't find or understand
    the solution.
    I would appreciate if someone could have a look and help me:
    Current version with the menu bar working fine:
    http://www.thebaysoccer.com
    Test page of the new version where my problem appears:
    http://www.thebaysoccer.com/new%20tbs/test.html
    Thanks!

    Hello,
    The trouble is the fact that IE applies text-align:center to
    more things
    than just text.
    You applied it to the li CSS. This not only centers the text
    in IE, but also
    the <ul> (which are your submenus) within these
    <li>.
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal li
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
    list-style-type: none;
    font-size: 12px;
    position: relative;
    text-align: center; <********
    cursor: pointer;
    width: auto;
    float: left;
    white-space: nowrap;
    You also have it in the ul.MenuBarHorizontal style.
    So, in IE the left edge of the <ul> (submenu) is
    aligning with the center of
    the <li> it is contained in.
    That's why the sub menu drops down with the left edge at the
    middle of the
    main nav "button".
    Remove those "text-align:center" rules.
    To center your menu text, apply text-align:center to the link
    style instead,
    like so:
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal a
    display: block;
    cursor: pointer;
    background-color: #333;
    padding: 0.5em 0.75em;
    color: #EEE;
    text-decoration: none;
    text-align: center;
    As far as the submenu background, notice "fixed width" in the
    comment line
    above the following rule in the spry CSS.
    You had yours set to auto.
    Try this:
    /* Menu item containers are same fixed width as parent */
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul li
    width: 10em;
    background-color: transparent;
    Take care,
    Tim

  • Got confused!! MDSYS.SDO_WITHIN_DISTANCE (8.1.7),

    Anyhelp?

    Thank you, Dave.
    It is good to know 8.1.7 have SRID work.
    I think it is also safe to stay that field 'NULL' if we don't want to use these new coordinate system functions.
    We check the error 'ORA-03113:end of file..' and find it is likely related to an R-tree index bug. After runniing the 8.1.7 patch, the problem is sloved.
    Someone also saw that problem happened in sdo_relate statement several days ago.
    Thanks for your help.
