Zeroed out my drive -- why are 2 files still there?

I set my computer to zero out my drive over 7 passes last night. I just checked it and it appears that it worked -- it states that only 73.3 MB of the drive are currently being used by 2 files. What are these 2 files and how can they be there if everything on the drive has been erased?
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Launch Terminal (in Applications/Utilities). type the following command (replacing "yourdrivename" with your drive's name - if you have spaces, you will have to escape them with a backslash "\" like: your\ drive\ name ):
ls -al /Volumes/yourdrivename
You will see that there are two files (. and ..) that are required by Unix for every directory (folder). "." is the current folder, ".." is the next-higher-up folder in the tree.
Required by Unix.

  • Tom -- why need to zero out new drive on format?

    Hi Tom,
Page 5, FCE workshop book, you recommend zeroing out a new drive. Why?
Is it sufficient just to reformat to Mac formats? I thought zeroing out was just necessary if you wanted to erase previously held data (to prevent recovery)?
Or is there a performance benefit to do so?
    Thanks.

Tom may have his own reason. Here is mine -
Zeroing out a new drive is plain old 'good practice.' It exercises the entire drive mechanism over an extended period of time by writing zeros to every location on every platter in the unit. This way your disk directory as well as all data locations are assured of being 'empty'. Doing this, especially to a new drive, will add to your confidence that your new drive is working properly.
If you just erase the disk, only the directory is emptied. This is like removing the table of contents page from a book, but the rest of the book is still there !
There is folklore that zeroing out the drive inspects the platter surface and identifies and sets aside unusable sectors. They are not the same processes. Modern hard drive technology and manufacture have progressed far beyond the level they were at in the 80's when low level formatting utilties that performed these surface scans were common. Today most drives can only be low-level formatted at the factory. For what it's worth, I have not found any confirmation that zeroing out via OSX Disk Utility performs surface scans; but there are third-party utilites like TechTool that can.

  • Zero Out Hard Drive Question

I have been using my 27" iMac for various software testing. Now that my testing is complete I want to wipe the drive and start fresh. In Disk Utility there are many options to choose from when going to Erase > Security Options. Is there any benefit to Zeroing out the drive before re-installing Snow Leopard? Or can I just select the Don't Erase Data option and reinstall deleting the home folder when prompted. Does Zeroing out free any more space up?

no, there is no benefit to this at all. zeroing out is only needed to prevent data recovery. it serves no other function. apparently, it doesn't even map out bad blocks on the hard drive.
Or can I just select the Don't Erase Data option and reinstall deleting the home folder when prompted.
"don't erase data"?? there is no such option in disk utility. just erase the drive using the erase tab. this will erase everything on your hard drive. or better yet, reformat the drive using the partition tab. then quit disk utility and proceed with the install.

When the Apple Store tests a zeroed out hard drive, is their test as intensive as wd lifesaver etc. software's in napping out bad sectors etc.
I do know one test at the Apple store is a three or four hour test that is very thorough for the whole Mac Pro computer, system by system test, I'm curious what kind of test they perform if you're testing the hard drive for bad sectors or whatever I'm a novice
I mean is it as effective or more effective than the software called wd lifesaver?
Does anyone have any idea what software they use or is their test only testing the systems of the computer and not just the hard drive?
I am moving from PC to Mac right now I have not even use my 2009 Mac Pro yet I was told to have the hard drives zeroed out and tested to start with a clean slate this is what I'm trying to do.
    Thank you

The chip on the hard drive itself basically takes care of bad sectors. If an operation tries to write to such a sector, the drive will mark it bad and move onto the next one. That's why zeroing the drive effectively does the operation of mapping bad sectors - the whole drive is checked.
Their general hardware test does not do a full drive check, as far as I remember - the memory check can take a long time, though, since they're looking for random errors.
So for your Mac Pro, you should feel confident that doing a one-pass zero (don't do more than one pass, it's a waste of it me), will be enough initialization for the drive. And many drive experts don't even bother with that, relying on modern drive chips/firmware to do the job of checking for bad sectors on the fly.

  • "are you still there" Prompt

    Hello,
could you please tell me how to delete the system prompt "are you still there" in UCCX 8.5. (linux)
    Thnaks

I fixed this issue via one of two simple solutions, the first is only by setting the max retry in the menu properties to 0 and I repeated the recorded message itself 2 or 3 times in the prompt to be played.
The second solution is to set the max retry in the menu properties to 0 and place a counter step to count against how many times the menus step reached the time out or unsuccessful branches then pass to the next step or repeats the menu by a go to step based on a comparison with a Max Retry integer which you set, and this solution is better than the first one as no need to repeat the message itself in the recordings and also because it also remove the system prompt " you have entered an invalided option "

  • How to change "are you still there" vioce from auto attemdent

    Hi All,
we have exchange 2010  with lync 2010 .
we want to change "are you still there" message from exchange UM Auto Attendent
    Manish Yadav

Navigate to \Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\UnifiedMessaging\prompts\en  (for English) on each UM server and find the file tuiAreYouThere.1.wav.  Replace that file with a blank wave file of the same format.  You may also be able
to simply remove the file.  Keep track of these as they may come back some day with a patch or repair.  Keep in mind this is not supported, so a bit of caution there, but in the end you're just swapping WAV files.

How do I completely clear my ipod music, and how can I solve the syncing problem?

Sync works the same way it always has, connect the device, select the content desired to sync and sync.
All the media should be in iTunes already, iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
If this is a new computer, move the content from the old computer to the new computer.

    Hey Gabriel ,
Seems that I have the dial by extension step more than once  on my script , it was well hidden. i think I have been able to remove  the annoying "Are You stiil there"  record.  though I have another  issue , once the recording message is finished , It takes about 3-4 seconds to rediret the call to the Extension ,
Any hint on how I can reduce that time to 1 or even 0  so the ringing tone can be heard as soon as the message is completed.

  • Why are files residing on sharepoint not showing up in Recent Items or Jump Lists?

I recently had to upgrade to Windows 7 (SP1) on my work laptop. I am running IE8, Office 2007, and Sharepoint 2010. I would use the recent file lists ALL THE TIME to jump to the latest documents that i had been using. (for example, Start > Excel >
Recent > file.xlsx). After the upgrade, i pinned Excel, Word, etc to the taskbar and the start menu. I can see recent documents, However, the jump lists do not contain any files that reside on Sharepoint - only those that are saved to my harddrive or my
mapped network drive. Interestingly enough, when i log into Excel application, for instance, the recent file list contains recent sharepoint files, C: files, and mapped drive files! I have tried to pin/unpin, allow recent, disallow recent, restart. i cannot
figure out how to see sharepoint files in my jump lists/recent items from start menu or taskbar. PLEASE HELP!
... not sure if this is related, but my recent places in Favorites does not contain any places from sharepoint either. only harddrive and mapped drive... Thanks!

    Hi,
The behavior might be caused by security reason. And it is only to Office 2007 suite. In Office 2010, the behavior has been changed.

  • Why are powerbooks still on apple's shelves?

why are the powerbook still being sold by Apple? Because they're emptying their shelves?
Or more interesting: Why would people buy a Powerbook?
I am just wondering because i am on the market to buy a laptop.
MBP are very expensive and Powerbook are not that cheap.
    MBP or PB?
    Any idea?

The Apple online store has not sold powerbooks (other than refurb's) since the various Intel laptops first appeared. And the retail store in Short Pump Va. hasn't had any powerbooks since shortly after the Intel machines hit the shelves.
In what Apple store have you seen new powerbooks for sale?
Macmall and other retailers still seem to have a few - and will have I suppose until thier inventory is gone. But, to my knowledge, Apple itself pulled them as soon as the respective Intel machine was available.

  • Why are files not displaying in Files tab of DW Mac CS6?

    Hi,
I am a long time user of DW CS6 on Windows and recently have migrated to DW CS6 on the Mac. In my site, I have dozens of .htm files instead of .html files. When I look in the Files tab of DW Mac, none of the .htm files appear there. In fact, when I re-save an .htm file as an .html file, that does not appear in the Files tab either! They all appear fine in the Mac's Finder and can be opened there, but I like the convenience of the Files tab feature. Why is it not showing individual .htm and .html files?
    Thank you.
    ~ Michael

The last thing I would try is to rebuild the DW Cache file per the instructions here...
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/494811
If that doesn't do it, the only thing I can think of is a corrupt user account on your Mac.
That Reveal in Finder not matching the contents of a browsed to folder is something I've never seen before. From what I understand of the function, it's not a DW generated folder, but a function of your OS, just like browsing to it manually. If there is no duplicate, they should be identical. I'm wondering what happens if you open the Reveal In Finder version side by side with a browsed to version, then try dragging test files back and forth.

  • Excel automatically create .tmp file when open after close Excel, tmp file still there

Anytime I save a change to one of my Excel files, the TMP file appears in the destination folder and remains.  The "main" Excel file
saves the retains the changes that I made and after each subsequent change, a new TMP file is created...old TMP files are not deleted.  This is only happening with Excel files.

    Hi,
From your description, I understand that  you want .tmp file disappear . If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.
This issue can be related to many factors.
First,  try to check out file->save-> Save autorecover information, if you use Excel 2010.
If the problem persists, it may be a permissions problem.
