ZFS I/O read policy
I'm trying to find out what defines the I/O read policy on ZFS is. In most volume managers, there's a setting for read policy (e.g. disksuite has roundrobin, geometric or first), but there doesn't seem to be anything for zfs that I can find.
The reason for asking is that we're looking at a config whereby we mirror across sites and obviously we'd want reads to target the local array in preference to the remote array for performance.
File Class (JSR75) is optional for MIDP 2.0.
The BlackBerry 8700 does not support JSR75.

Unregistered Workstation dont read policy
I have a linux based Zenworks 7 sp1 setup. Using pxe boot.
We have taken a base image no problem.
We can manually restore and create images with no problems.
I can restore an image to a machine that is registered in the tree with
no problems.
What we cannot do is get an unregistered workstation to restore an
image. I have set the policy to image a machine thats ip address start
with and then given the first part. It pxe boots fine come up
Contacting Novell Preboot Policy Service ...... Done
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM
It then fails as if not meeting the requirements or something but ive
tried every possible option to make it image any ideas????

Impact of Controller Policy on ASM
This is to share with everyone my discoveries in regard to Controller Policy for ASM (Automatic Storage Management) in a JBOD (just a bunch of disks) configuration.
As it turns out, it makes a big difference in performance how you set your controller policy. I tested various settings for the READ POLICY: ADAPtive read-ahead, (always) Read-Ahead, or NO-Read-Ahead; and CACHE POLICY: Cache I/O, or Direct I/O. WRITE POLICY was kept at Write-Back, with Write-Through not tested (Warning).
This test showed the best performance is attained if you set Read Policy to NO_READAHEAD, Cache Policy to DIRECTIO, and Write Policy to WRITEBACK. The SQL used are more suitable for OLAP than OLTP. (Time is in min:sec)
ADAP-------ADAP--------NO-RA-------RA------------Read Policy
CACHEIO--DIRECTIO--DIRECTIO--DIRECTIO--Cache Policy
9:13----------6:45----------5:19------------6:50-------------Complex CTAS 3tbl join
6:49----------5:58----------3:53------------7:02-------------Full Table Scan 120mil recs
4:41----------3:42----------3:39------------3:44-------------Full Scan of IOT Table 100mil rec
These tests were conducted on two Dell PowerVaults with 28 x 136 GB 15K RPM drives and one PERC RAID controller set to eliminate any RAID so ASM would provide all mirroring by scattering 1 MB Allocation Unit copies over various disks. Other specs: Windows Server 2003 SP2, Dell 1850 3.6 GHz Xeon PCU. Oracle 10g Standard Edition One. Parameter dbfile_multiblock_read_count is set to read 1 MB.
Your configuration will not match mine, but this test does show that it is worth the time to invest in empirical measurements of controller policy performance. DO NOT TAKE CONTROLLER POLICY FORGRANTED AND GO WITH THE DEFAULT POLICY OR ANY OUT OF THE BOX SOLUTION. This test showed that READ-AHEAD IS HARMFUL FOR ASM with 1MB AU and 1 MB dbfile_multiblock_read_count. I speculate that either Oracle ASM may be issuing its own intelligent read-ahead, or the ASM scatter of 1MB chunks renders single-disk read-ahead useless & excessive, or both.
I am very interested in reading your discoveries in tuning controller policy for ASM.1: Why not try with 2 PERC adapters ? The single adapter would be a SPOF and a possible bottleneckGood question; and are correct. Normally we would use 2 controllers with 2 PowerVaults and cross-hatch the 4 cables. Howerver, in this case we are planning to grow to 4 PowerVaults, 4 cables, and 2 PERCs (the max), so I need to plan on 2 PV per PERC.
2. Can we see your init.ora Sure. We do data mining, so our settings favor high throughput with minimal availability needs. Due to the amount of data moved via single-threaded execution (this is SE1) we are I/O constrained.

I will post this one again in desperation, I have had a SUN support call open on this subject for some time now but with no results.
If I can't get a straight answer soon, I will be forced to port the application over to Windows, a desperate measure.
Has anyone managed to recover a server and a zone that uses ZFS filesystems for the data partitions.
I attemped a restore of the server and then the client zone but it appears to corrupt my ZFS file systems.
The steps I have taken are listed below:
Built a server and created a zone, added a ZFS fileystem to this zone and installed the EBS 7.4 client software into the zone making the host server the EBS server.
Completed a backup.
Destroyed the zone and host server.
Installed the OS and re-created a zone with the same configuration.
Added the ZFS filesystem and made this available within the zone.
Installed EBS and carried out a complete restore.
Logged into the zone and installed the EBS client software then carried out a complete restore.
After a server reload this leaves the ZFS filesytem corrupt.
status: One or more devices could not be used because the the label is missing
or invalid. There are insufficient replicas for the pool to continue
functioning.
action: Destroy and re-create the pool from a backup source.
see: http://www.sun.com/msg/ZFS-8000-5E
scrub: none requested
config:
NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
p_1 UNAVAIL 0 0 0 insufficient replicas
mirror UNAVAIL 0 0 0 insufficient replicas
c0t8d0 FAULTED 0 0 0 corrupted data
c2t1d0 FAULTED 0 0 0 corrupted dataI finally got a solution to the issue, thanks to a SUN tech guy rather than a member of the EBS support team.
The whole issue revolves around the file:/etc/zfs/zpool.cache which needs to be backed up prior to carrying out a restore.
Below is a full set of steps to recover a server using EBS7.4 that has zones installed and using ZFS:
Instructions On How To Restore A Server With A Zone Installed
Using the servers control guide re-install the OS from CD configuring the system disk to the original sizes, do not patch at this stage.
Create the zpool's and the zfs file systems that existed for both the global and non-global zones.
Carry out a restore using:
If you don't have a bootstrap printout, read the backup tape to get the backup indexes.
cd /usr/sbin/nsr
Use scanner -B -im <device>
to get the ssid number and record number
scanner B -im /dev/rmt/0hbn
cd /usr/sbin/nsr
Enter: ./mmrecov
You will be prompted for the SSID number followed by the file and record number.
All of this information is on the Bootstrap report.
After the index has been recovered:
Stop the backup demons with: /etc/rc2.d/S95networker stop
Copy the original res file to res.org and then copy res.R to res.
Start the backup demons with: /etc/rc2.d/S95networker start
Now run: nsrck L7 to reconstruct the indexes.
You should now have your backup indexes intact and be able to perform standard restores.
If the system is using ZFS:
cp /etc/zfs/zpool.cache /etc/zfs/zpool.cache.org
To restore the whole system:
Shutdown any sub zones
cd /
Run /usr/sbin/nsr/nsrmm m to mount the tape
Enter recover
At the Recover prompt enter: force
Now enter: add * (to restore the complete server, this will now list out all the files in the backup library selected for restore)
Now enter: recover to start the whole system recovery, and ensure the backup tape is loaded into the server.
If the system is using ZFS:

Reasons to Not Have ZFS Root ?
I am in the process of installing Solaris 10 for the first time and have been reading and reading and reading:)) looking for info on the best way to set up a solaris server V440. I recently came across the ZFS stuff and think it looks pretty darn good.
1. Is there any reason NOT to have root as ZFS?
The servers has 2 72gb drives and the main purpose is a Syslog-Ng server. Can anyone offer any suggestions on the best way to configure this? From what I have read, I don't think we could really benefit by putting it in a non standard zone. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated too.
Thanks!!There are some things about ZFS that can't be beat. The live upgrade and alternate boot environments are great. The ability to quickly establish mirrors and RAID with one or two commands. Highly manageable snapshots. Not having to use fsck. I think all of these things can make up the fact that you can't split /opt out of the pool. If your system is going to remain static with no changes and downtime for patching and upgrades is not an issue, then UFS may be fine. I think you should create a test system with ZFS that mirrors your production system, and give some of the features such as live upgrade and patching offline a try, as well as enhanced disk management. I know that I'll never go back to UFS as long as ZFS is available.

Of my 3 email accounts, one of them has a "POLICY" at the bottem of the EDIT ACCOUNT section that reads "Policy - When roaming, syncing must be done manually.
What does that mean?????
What I do know is that I'm not getting my emails for this account if I'm not connected to WiFi.
This doesn't work for me. I travel internationally for work and if I'm not able to get my emails "as they come in", I won't have a job anymore.
What can I do to make sure that my Z10 is updating emails in REAL TIME?Hello Chrisrz,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community.

ZFS Supported on Macbook Pro?
I know I can't use ZFS for a Startup disk.
But if I have an external drive (USB) connected to my Macbook pro running Leopard
can I format that as a ZFS drive? Or is OS X server required to support ZFS?
What if I buy a Time Capsule? Can I format that as ZFS?
I haven't been able to find much documentation for ZFS on the Apple site. How format an external drive to use ZFS?
BobLooking ahead, ZFS should be supported in Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard,
http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/snowleopard/
In the meantime, see http://zfs.macosforge.org/ -
Migrating from ZFS back to UFS
Hello all!
Does anybody know a procedure to migrate from ZFS back to UFS? If I have zfs with BE how is it possible to go back to ufs root with correct BE configuration ?
Regards, PavelThere can be different reasons to migrate back from ZFS to UFS. For example you cannot create new BE with vxfs/ufs shared filesystems using -m option if your root is in rpool.. Or if you need using EMC BCV clones imported on the same host which is not supported for zpool. Or if you have run into a bug in the new patch on zfs...

NFS vs iSCSI IOPS differ - why?
Hello -
I recently setup an environment utilizing 8 IO Analyzers each accessing either an iSCSI LUN or NFS Share (but not both at the same time). The secondary virtual disk was set at 30GB.
For the iSCSI tests, we ran a 50/50 0% random workload and our total IOPS reached 4086.11.
When we created the second disk on an NFS datastore and ran the same test as above, our total IOPS only reached 583.57 for the same time period (2 hours). Additionally, latency doubled.
I checked IOMeter on the guests, and it appeared they were pushing fewer IOPS as well.
Any ideas as to why we couldn't push as many IOPS using NFS? I would think the amount of IOPS would be the same across tests, regardless of the backend?
Thanks in advance. For those wondering about ZFS and implications on performance, you may want to visit this thread that helped me understand: https://pthree.org/2013/04/19/zfs-administration-appendix-a-visualizing-the-zfs-intent-log/
