AFP client "connection failed 32" issue solved

I'm making this post because of the difficulty I had in troubleshooting this AFP error and hope someone will benefit from my finding.
I have a client whose server was responding with "connection failed 32" whenever anyone tried to connect to shares on the attached XRaid. The AFP log indicated entries like this:
Login admin
No matching key: admin
After much searching for hints on the forums I couldn't find any solutions. Some postings I read mentioned that the AFP problem was related to SCSI boards on their server. Not having one on our server I went after the nearest such item, namely Firewire. I finally solved the problem by unmounting the bank of 4 Firewire backup drives.
Although I have no idea why the AFP problem is related to the backup drives, it turned out that once I ran Disk Utility to repair the FW drives and remounted them, AFP worked once again. DU found "Directory name locked" on two of the drives and repaired them.

Hi apta

This seems to indicate a Kerberos key transfer of some sort that has not been recognised or was out of sync. Probably nothing to do with the actual problem which you have fixed. But that is what the log seems to be indicating to me.
Just a thought thats all

• AFP client "connection failed 32" - 10.4.7 AD bound client & server

Please, can anyone help with this?
Two G5s, clean installed, one as 10.4.7 client, other as 10.4.7 server. Both machines bound to company's MS AD. AD machine logins fine. AD lookups etc all working fine. DNS Forward and Reverse on server fine. Nothing else installed on either machine, no settings meddled with. Bound to AD with default settings.
Problem: When client attempts to connect to AFP shared volume on the server, message "Connection failed 32" appears. On first attempt after client reboot to connect to the share, the credentials pane appears (Domain, blah...) then, after OKing, the dreaded "Connection failed 32" message appears. Subsequent attempts to connect during the same session misses out the creds pane and returns only the 32 error message. I've looked up Apple's error codes but 32 doesn't exist.
Any non-AD bound client on the same network can connect to the same share fine via AFP, even LDAP clients using their AD creds.
I'd just config all the clients for LDAP to get round this but there are several reasons why that's a no no (mostly company security policy). It's either get all Macs fully AD bound or take them off the network.
Kerberos is used. Is this problem related to that? Sorry but I'm not a Mac or Networking Guru so I don't know which logs etc. to look at. Any help at all would be most appreciated - can't begin to tell you the hassle this is causing.
It would be something to find anyone with the same problem at least.
Thanks.

A development on this:
By setting the Authentication method (Server Admin, AFP, Settings, Access) to Standard, rather than Kerberos or Any, clients can now mount the share OK, and still using their AD user credentials rather than a server local account.
Not sure what the security implications for this method are. Or is that just a red herring anyway? As long as the users are authenticated against our AD (via Kerberos) I'm happy for now.
Now then, if only Apple's SMB server would allow our PC clients to connect to the Mac shares I'll be fully home and dry. Come on Apple, where is SMB signing? Thursby have it. And don't tell me I can just disable it on the MS AD servers - absolutely no chance of that in a corporate PC network. And please don't tell me I can use DAVE to do the SMB sharing - it handles the signing but slows down AFP access to a crawl when everyone logs in.

Hi Poonam!
Got to dig in the past a bit, I remember Users being able to create SLD object have to have certain permissions set in the J2EE UME. Simple Admin rights do not suffer, if I recall right.
Unfortunately I cannot go further in detail because this issue has been solved by a long gone collegue of mine.
Good luck anyway!

• AFP drive connection failed

hi,
i have a NAS which i setup to be connected with my macs.
the icon for this nas drive (AFP) is located on the left part of the finder under "shared". i want to enter in my name and password every time i connect to this drive but the log in screen won't show up. it just shows connection failed when i click on "connect as" button.
do you know what i need to do to have this log in screen to show? i've tried connect to server but if i do this way, i will have to connect to each folder one by one which i do not want to do.
thanks!

Just got a 2011 Mac Mini, the cheap one, and downloaded the Server App.
My local tech support (my Nephew) was NOT happy about Lion Server.... wanted to UPGRADE to 10.6 To be honest, I can see why, it has so many bugs I was regretting the download of 10.7 server.
Being impatient and not wanting to go thru the hassle of changing OS's, I just started dinking around. Note, I'm just home user, I'm fairly tech saavy, fairly new to MAC, I know nothing about servers. We have to two MBPs and this new mini, that's it. I just wanted faster backups, fast storage for music and other stuff, and that's about it.
SOLUTION: From the Server App, I simply clicked Time Machine, turned it on, and told it what drive to use... BOOM, I'm done, that's it! All I had to do was point my MBP to that drive an starting the MBP TimeMachine. Its that easy. Wow, really!
OTHER THOUGHTS:
I have a 4TB WD RAID (2 TB RAID 1). Its Firewire 800, so reasonable fast, and literally 6X cheaper than the equivalent Thunderbolt Promise drive (take a hike). My only concern is the Server puts all the client Time Machines in one partition... Now I have to figure out how to resize it. It blows me away a "server" doesn't have tools to resize a partition. Guess I'll have to load iPartition.
I was using a the same drive on the USB port of the Airport extreme. It was DOG slow! But it worked and is probably the cheapest network time machine setup you can have. Now, for 650 more, I have 100Mb backups and a cool new toy to play with. I'm probably going to upgrade my switch to gigabit. Then I'll have braggin rights over any other house on the block.

• What should be done when client.connect() failed?

Hi guys,
I am using JCO to connect backend System. If client.connect() is called and for certain reason failed, what should I do to roll back the action so that the system keeps normal. I think client.disconnect is not the solution, because connect is not successful. I encountered this problem, and my portal is totally down, what should I do to avoid this situaltion?
My code is
try{
client.connect();
catch (JCO.Exception e){
//WHAT SHOULD BE DONE HERE?
System.exit(1);

• Outlook 2003 Client connections fail after a while, requiring reboot

I have Windows 2003 Server terminal servers in several sites, with Outlook 2003 as email clients. Server is Exchange 2010, located in my main site. The remote site terminal servers are connected through WAN links that are 5 Mbps connections,
with generally very low usage compared to capacity.
Outlook works properly for 2 - 3 days for the remote site users, but then, their connections start to drop, and they see "Outlook is trying to connect the the exchange server ..." systray messages, and they lose their email. Can't see their
inbox contents, though sometimes the tree gets populated. The only fix is to reboot the terminal server.
Similar terminal servers at the main site do not experience this.
The backstory is that I recently migrated users from Exchange2003 to Exchange2010. On exchange 2003 we never had this problem.
What is going on here?

Hi,
From your description, I would like to clarify the following things:
1. Make sure that these problematic users use Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Service Pack 2 or later version.
2. The default Exchange Server 2010 RTM configuration requires RPC encryption. However, Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 does not use RPC encryption by default. You need to update an existing Outlook 2003 profile manually so that it uses RPC encryption with
Exchange 2010.
For more information about it, here is a helpful KB for your reference.
Outlook connection issues with Exchange 2010 mailboxes because of the RPC encryption requirement

• FaultCode:Client.Error.MessageSend faultDetail:'Channel.Connect.Failed

Hello Everyone,
I'm kinda sure a lot of people have to deal with the same error, but I can't solve it using explainations given in other topics. So here it is :
I'm trying to create a Flex project on Adobe Flash Builder 4.0, using J2EE, BlazeDS and Tomcat6.0.
To have a good start, I want to try some basic interactions between java & flex. For that, I created a java class with a functions returning a String, witch is called when a button is clicked in my main panel :
remoting-config.xml

<service id="remoting-service"
class="flex.messaging.services.RemotingService">
<adapters>
<adapter-definition id="java-object" class="flex.messaging.services.remoting.adapters.JavaAdapter" default="true"/>
</adapters>
<default-channels>

</default-channels>
<destination id="hello">
<properties>
test.HelloWorld
<scope>session</scope>
</properties>
</destination>
</service>
HelloWorld.java
package test;
public class HelloWord {
public String sayHello()
return "Hello from Java";
project.mxml

<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" minWidth="1000" minHeight="600">

<fx:Declarations>
<s:RemoteObject id="roHello"
destination="hello"
fault="onFault('roHello',event)">

fault="onFault('roHello.sayHello',event)"/>

retour = event.result as String;
//Alert.show(event.result.toString());
Alert.show("success::"+retour);
private function onFault(remoteObject : String, event : FaultEvent) : void

//Alert.show("fault");

</fx:Script>
</s:Application>
When I launch my application, the button is created. But as soon as I click on it, I got the following message :
faultCode:Client.Error.MessageSend faultString:'Echec de l'envoi' faultDetail:'Channel.Connect.Failed error NetConnection.Call.Failed: HTTP: Status 404: url: 'http://localhost:8080/WebContent/messagebroker/amf''
any idea how to solve it ?

I've resolved my issue. Perhaps you are correct that my tokens were not resolving, but since you did not offer a way to fix that, I was still on my own. There was nothing helpful that I could find in the console or log.
I found this article, and after using his architecture (using an external config file to define the amf endpoint at runtime) I was able to connect to the back end. I was also looking for a good way to externalize information, so I recommend reading this article:

Any suggestions on what I can ask my IT department to change on the server so I can connect would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeremy,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
From the error and other description it seems that there is some misconfiguration with setup. You need to provide the FQDN name of the server as might server name is not resolving its name properly and so facing issue. As seems from below details:
[2014-Nov-26 15:52:20] RDP (0): Final rdp configuration used:gatewayhostname:s:gato.gibbscam.com
screen mode id:i:0
use multimon:i:1
session bpp:i:24
full address:s:dev-JeremyS2.gibbs.local
Configuration used and full address name both appears different so please verify configuration accordingly.
Please check the DNS record, check certificate whether it match FQDN name of the server with certificate name, also try to check to connect with IP address and see what result you can find.
You can follow below guide to configure RD Gateway and after that verify the result.
1. Deploying Remote Desktop Gateway RDS 2012
2. How To Work with RD Gateway in Windows Server 2012
Hope it helps!
Thanks.

• Remoting Connection Issue: Channel.Connect.Failed

Solution: Turns out my client had installed a new
firewall/web management system without telling me. My app was being
blocked. :(
Hi there,
I have a Flex app using remoting and ColdFusion. My client
has suddenly experienced the following error:
Channel.Connect.Failed
NetConnection.Call.BadVersion: url: '
http://mysite/flex2gateway/'
The weird thing is the app works when you access it from
outside of my client's office. I'm wondering if it is some sort of
firewall issue on their end. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

The issue is probably do to a problem with your configuration. There is probably a destination or endpoint issue. A nice and short tutorial on this can be found at http://flexbandit.com/archives/55.

• Exchange 2010 SP3 Rollup 8v2 causes client connectivity issues

I installed SP3 Rollup 8v2 this weekend, going from 7. Since then we are having random client connectivity issues. New profiles can't be created, and some users can't access resources when booking meetings. We can do a registry fix to their machines to add
a DS Server, but this is a workaround only. I have uninstalled the Rollup 8v2 and we are still having the issue.
I thought 8v2 was supposed to fix this issue!

Hi,
According to your post, I understand that outlook client cannot connect to Exchange server to configure profile and cannot get list of resources room when upgrade to Exchange 2010 SP3 Rollup 8v2, the temporary solution is that specify the DC in registry.
If I misunderstand your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Is there error message when configure Outlook failed?
Please run Test E-mail AutoConfiguration and Outlook connection status to double confirm the URL and FQDN of Exchange server.
As additional, please run below command to double check the state of Exchange system component:
Get-ServerComponentstate -Identity “servername”
If the state is Inactive, please run below command to active relevant component:
Set-ServerComponentState <Identity> -Component “component name” -Requester HealthAPI -State Active

• 10.4.11 Client connection issue to 10.6 server

I am moving from a 10.4 server to a 10.6 server. All the clients are 10.4.
General configuration is as follows:
- Home directories are on the server, shared via AFP.
- Setup a "Guest" computer configuration on the 10.6 server in workgroup manager
- DNS is successful for forward and reverse resolution
- Performed a bind of the client without authentication
- Kerberos is NOT enabled
- Able to authenticate successfully, but get the following message after authentication:
"You are unable to log in to user account "XXXXX" at this time.
Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred. THe home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server. Contact your system administrator for help."
I am able to successfully access the share using a local account on the client and authenticate against the user on the server.
No errors are showing in the AFP logs. No errors in the Open Directory logs that correspond to this.
Anything that can help for getting the clients connected to the new server (Mac Mini, connected to the network via ethernet)

i have the same error with a 10.4 client
"Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred. THe home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server. Contact your system administrator for help."
anyone has a detailed how to to bind a 10.4 client to a 10.6 server ? 10.7, 10.6.and 10.5 clients working fine but the 10.4 client not :-(
this is for nfs:
asha:/pub                /Network/Servers   nfs   resvport,net  0 0
daishar:/pub             /Network/Servers   nfs   resvport,net  0 0
daishar:/home/rtomayko   /Network/Servers   nfs   resvport,net  0 0
must i only change the "nfs" to "afp" ?
hope anyone can help me thx

• Suppress "Connection Failed" Error Messages on Client?

Hi there,
I have a Leopard server which is Managing Preferences for users in groups. In my Login Preference for a group, I have it basically "auto mounting" shares, such as smb://leopard-server/accounting and smb://leopard-server/graphics.
The works great so far. A user logs into their machine, managed prefs determines their group membership, and poof all the appropriate network drives show up on their desktop.
Problem is - when a user is off the network (for instance, at home with their laptop), after they power up and login they are immediately assailed with error messages, one for each failed connection to a network drive: "Connection failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time".
Now it is understandable why Leopard is bringing up those error messages - it's trying it's best to connect to the network drive but the user isn't on the network.
Question is: is there any way to suppress these error messages and let the users who are off-network boot to their desktop "quietly"?
I know you can hold the Option key at login in order to turn off Managed Prefs altogether, but the problem with that is users tend to forget to turn Managed Prefs back on when they get back into the office.
Any ideas?

It's not just you, I am seeing this behaviour too.
Where 10.4 clients would fail silently, 10.5 is throwing the "Connection Failed" error message as you described.
I agree it is confusing to end users and would like a way to supress it, the only thing that springs to mind is manually mounting the share via a login hook that first checks network availability rather than using a WGM configured mount. Trouble is, to mount an afp share with the users credentials via a script is a whole new problem in itself.

• IPhoto 8 & iMovie 8 give my mac a 'Connection Failed Error' then AFP error?

After installing iLife 08, both iPhoto & iMovie cause my mac to try to connect to an unconnected server/network/drive.
I get a Connection Failed The Server May not exist ... error, which eventually becomes an AFP error. Can I stop this? They both seem to be trying to connect/mount to a drive (that no files related to them are or have ever been stored on relating to previous iPhoto libraries.. any ideas)
Not impressed with this new set really... iWeb crashes instantly. Nice.

I'm getting this too but only with iPhoto.
Before installing iLife '08 I moved my three iPhoto 6 libraries from my iMac G4 to my MacBook (via AirPort) as per the instructions in 'How to move the iPhoto Library folder to a new location'. I disconnected from my iMac and then launched iPhoto 6 on my MacBook to make sure each library was intact.
I installed iLife and successfully upgraded each library but now each time I launch iPhoto 7 my MacBook tries to connect to the original location of the libraries and, if the iMac is asleep, gives the AFP error Tim mentioned above. If I then quit and re-launch iPhoto I get "Caution: the iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it".
I can solve all this by making sure that my iMac is awake when I launch iPhoto but this is pointless if I'm out of AirPort range.
Grr.
