After Effects preview help

I'm struggling to understand how my AE play and preview performance is so bad. I've seen the generic posts on AE performance but I'm wondering if I'm doing something pathologically wrong here given the severity of the problem.
I'm new to AE on the Mac, I used it some on the PC. I have a new iMac 5k 4GHz w/ 32GB RAM. I'm running After Effects CC 2014. I've loaded in a 21 second 1920x1080 @60Hz clip. I've not touched anything beyond loading in the clip, not created any content at all, yet it plays back with RAM preview at 10Hz.
I set the image preview size to custom 25x25 pixels, so the image I'm looking at is something you might see on an old Commodore 64:
And it still only goes 30Hz.
Is there some default setting that could be sinking my performance? Or is 1920x1080@60 just not going to play back?

It should playback correctly but to say what could be issue with your playback please send us some more specs:
- how many discs you have on your comp?
- is any of your disc SSD or just Hdd
- if you have only HDDs tell us if you have any other software that is reading/writing on that disc when you try to play that clip on AE
In my opinion in your case the HDD will be that bottle neck that slow down everything.

    Using Golive CS2, when I go to the help menu and choose Golive Help, After Effects 7 help opens instead, with a dropdown menu that has no listing for Golive Help. I just reinstalled Golive CS2, the update, and a help update to no effect.

    First, ensure you have the latest help centre and Golive Help package:
    Help Centre 2.1:

    Help Package: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3091
    *Ensure the file GoLive_8.0_en-us.zip is in the Adobe Help
    Centre\AdobeHelpdata\Packages folder.*
    There are a couple of Techdocs relating to the Help Centre:
    331717 Help window doesn't appear when you start Adobe Help Center

    If those don't help:
    1. Try deleting the Help Preference file by holding down CTRL+ALT+SHIFT
    whilst starting Help.
    2. Assuming ahc.exe is located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center,
    delete the following folders
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Cache
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Database

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData\Search
    The only folder under C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Help Center\AdobeHelpData
    you should have left is one called packages.
    Run ahc.exe
    What should happen is that your help centre database should get rebuilt
    (you will see progress messages as it process each help package) and

    Help

    Thanks for taking the time to answer this question. Knowing this isn't possible at least narrows my options down. It would be helpful to provide some kind of list of what comp settings carry over into AME from After Effects. Is it essentially everything that is enabled in the Timeline? (I know that motion blur settings do.)
    I'll put this in a feature request, but yes, we need the other half of After Effects Render Queue in AME in order for AME to be a good replacement for rendering from AE. I'll give you my thoughts on why Render Settings are essential before you would actually want to render with AME instead of doing so because you have to (either because you want to render in the background, or need a codec that has been removed from AE.)
    1. Speed: Simply applying a Render Settings preset is much faster than manually setting motion blur, frame blending, work area, etc.
    2. Reliability: Not being able to apply a Render Settings preset at the time of render is a recipe for missing a crucial setting buried in a comp, then having to redo a render and wasting time.
    3. Features: As noted above, there is no way to approximate Render Queue's ability to change resolutions at render, which results in a lot of wasted time when that feature is needed.
    Render Settings I think are crucial to making AME rendering worthwhile for AE users:
    1. Rendering resolution
    2. Work Area/Entire Composition toggle
    3. Field Rendering (wait, does this mean AME can't currently render to fields?)
    4. And PRESET ability these settings, so I'm not doing them manually every time.
    I realize that your team clearly doesn't spend the same amount of time I do making low res H264 previews and sending final files out in H264 format, so you don't appreciate the impact of the changes you made. Moving to AME for that stuff is a real inconvenience, but implementing the settings above could help soften the blow.
    Thanks,
    Jerry

  • After Effects Preview (CUDA)

    Hey,
    i got a Problem with After Effects CC with the (Live "Render") Preview.
    I activated on the Settings my GPU for Preview rendering, but that won't work.
    After Effects tells me that my GPU is using OpenGL 2.1.2, but that is not correct my GPU supports 4.3 (Lastest Drivers, GeForce 335.23 WHQL)
    GPU: ASUS DirectCUII OC GTX780
    CPU: i7 2600k @ 4.7Ghz
    RAM: 16GB
    before i used CS6 with 2x AMD HD 6970 were 1 GPU has been used for Preview rendering, but nVidia don't work.
    Can someone help me?

  • Problem importing PSD (with multiple groups and layers) into After Effects. Help!

    I created a "comic strip" in photoshop (multiple rectangle shape layers, then various shapes within each box for each frame of the comic strip) that I want to import into AE. When I import it as a composition (to keep my layers), however, what appears is an simply a black image with white lines where the lines of the comic strip used to be. I checked the color modes, but they are both in RGB so I don't think that's the problem. Also, when I double click the cartoon strip composition, I can choose certain groups from the mini flow-chart at the top left and view those individual frames. However, I can't view the entire comic strip as a whole, which is necessary for my animation. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as I'm on a tight time constraint. Thanks!

    When I asked what version down to the last decimal, I meant it. After Effects version should start with 11, but we need the numbers after that too.
    And I understand that you want to pan between them, so just put all the different PSD's you import into the same comp and pan between them.

  • Matte made with rotobrush is different in output than it is in After Effects? Help Please.

    I ran into this issue last night when I made a matte with a rotobrush. Everything looks perfect when I scrub through and even go frame by frame, but when I export it I get this issue where there seems to be "extra" matte that is cutting off something in the scene by putting the background on top of it (this is what the intentional matte is supposed to do, but not in the frames where it keeps showing up).
    I'm using AE CS6 (trial version) with the latest updates. The source footage is h264 (originally AVCHD intelaced, deinterlaced using premiere pro before importing into after effects). The output is h264. Has anyone seen this before? and can you offer any advice on what to check?
    Other possibly important info is that there are 3 different rotobrush mattes on 3 different layers. One covers everything, another covers things half way "through" the scene (3D), but gets covered by closer things, and the last one is for when the camera gets to the other side of the subjects.
    So far I've checked:
    -The matte itself.
    -Made sure I drew the matte with the rotobrush at full res.
    Any quick help would be greatly appreciated because the deadline for the video I'm working on is tonight. (Sept 12th).

    some thoughts/questions
    I would...
    use the original footage, no need to deinterlace first, interpret footage correctly, precomp if required. maybe at twice frame rate to compensate for the inter field movement...
    though I agree transcoding to pro res makes it easier, the right set up can cope with native footage.
    I would put a bright colour solid guide layer underneath to check where holes in the matte could be being disguised by the background colour.
    Check for after effects nightmare premultiplication of layers and maybe change layer mode to alpha add in case overlapping edges are causing unwanted transparency.
    always render out to an RGB codec as AE is rgb based, then compress in AME...
    ALways work at full res, full size.
    MANUALLY delete the cache folders as you can quite often be looking at old and corrupt caches.
    I have ioFX cards which really help the smoothness of roto...

  • After effects cs4 help

    i am trying to install adobe after effects cs4. i am running on win7. i know it is compatible because i have had the trial version before and it worked just fine but i uninstalled it a while ago. now i decided i want the full version but when i try to run the .exe a windows error pops up and says that "adobe after effects cs4 has stopped working windows is searching for a solution." i have tried to let it figure out what the problem is but no help. tried to convert to a .uif file and mount it to a drive hoping that by some chance that would help but that didnt work either. please help.

    Any other Adobe apps on the system? If so, do they include any public Betas (Flash Catalyst, Lightroom 3 for instance)? Did the apps update recently? The recent Adobe Reader updates seem to habve some ill effects. In any case, if you have other Adobe tools, uninstall them all, run the CS4 Clean Script, delete the caps.db in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\caps and start with a clean slate. If you need to install other tools, make sure to install them in correct order, i.e. older versions first, then CS4, then all updates and only as a final step any Betas.

  • After Effects crashing HELP

    I have After Effects CS6 and I have a file running. I have 6 comps going in that file due to small animation clips for a big project. I have them set up and literally almost to render. But now every time I load it up, comp 3 loads up. I click comp 2 and 1 they work! If it pick comp 4,5 or 6 it tells me that AE has crashed and I can save before the crash. I really REALLY need these to work. I'm freaking out due to I have this project and its literally due like Tuesday. Please help me. I'm really worried and stressed!
    errors, including ae.blitpipe
    That link is the actual error I am having. I'm doing updates but I'm still freaked and hoping it fixes the issue with my update! >_<
    Update didn't fix my issue. Now I'm really freaked! >_<

    Nobody can tell you anything without proper system info or other technical details like exact project information or the crash logs. You are losing yourself in vague and generalized statments.

  • After Effects Preview Resolutions and Pixel Bender

    Hi,
    Hopefully this is a simple fix. I've encountered an issue with PB filters and After Effects's variable preview resolution. Consider this simple kernel:
    <languageVersion : 1.0;>
    kernel gridTest
    <   namespace : "quarterlightpictures.com";
        vendor : "Quarterlight Pictures";
        version : 1;
    >
        input image4 src;
        output pixel4 dst;
        void evaluatePixel() {
            float2 coordFloored = floor(outCoord());
            dst.rgb = float3(0.0);
            if(mod(coordFloored.y, 50.0) < 1.0)
                dst.rgb = float3(1.0);
            dst.a = 1.0;
    All it does is draw some 1px thick horizontal lines 50 pixels apart. This is fine, of course. However if I set the preview resolution in After Effects to 1/2, the lines are no longer drawn - the comp goes completely black. What I'd expect is the output to be subsampled in AE, and the lines to become 2px thick, but half as bright, which is what happens if I add a Grid effect and do the same.
    At 1/3 and 1/4 resolution the lines do appear sporadically - but not everywhere theyr'e supposed to be - and are drawn 3 and 4 pixels thick accordingly.
    Does PB work pre-or-post down-res? In other words, does a PB filter run, send its output to AE's comp window and then gets down-ressed for preview (if the resolution isn't full), or does it down-res the dource and pass it to PB? If it's the former then it should just work as I expect. If it's the latter, then are my source dimensions becoming halved, or are my pixel sizes becoming 2x2?
    Hope that makes sense. This is causing an issue with a plugin I wrote using PB, with things disappearing when adaptive resolution kicks in.
    Thanks,
    Christian

    I've figured it out.
    If you test like so, it works!
         dst.rgb = float3(0.0);
         if(mod(coordFloored.y, 50.0) < pixelSize(src).y)
                dst.rgb = float3(1.0);
            dst.a = 1.0;

  • Smooth render/new to after effects plz help

    Hey everyone,
    Hope you guys can help me out. Im so fed up with my situation.
    I have older 720 x 576 video avi clips that I wanna use.
    I use the same source fps to render it, same size(best settings) and after it's rendered, the video doesn't look that smooth. It looks like its slower almost. If I watch original movie it's do much smoother and faster looking in a way.
    Can somebody tell me the exact settings I must have to render it as smooth as possible.
    720 x 576 25fps avi
    Thanx guys:)
    Werner

    Hi,
    thanx so much for answering my question. appreciate it.
    i saw that only certain render formats have option where you can choose codecs. is that what you mean by codecs? the only thing i have is copy the source 25fps, 720 x 576 and rendered it as avi.
    i want to import the footage that i render in after effects to premiere sometimes. dont know what format is the best.
    thanx again for all the help
    werner.

  • After effects download help

    Hey, uh, I'm trying to install the Adobe after effects CS4 trial on my Vista. I download the first file, then halfway through, it says I dont have enough space. But I do. I have about 312 GB left on my C: file and 1.8 on my other one (marked factory image). And it also says something about a TEMP file. PLEASE HELP I REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY WANT AE!!!!!!!!!

    What exactly does it tell you? References to a temp file would imply, that your temporary directory (C:\Users\dracola\AppData\Roaming\Temp) is full or your browser's cahce folder. In either case, use CCleaner to remove any unnecessary debris and make sure to set the sizes of those directories accordingly, should you use any limits/ quota on them. Also, if you are experiencing these issues with a specific browser, try another one. There's enough alternatives and they are all free.

  • Majure export failliure in After Effects. Help...

    Dear guys,
    Currently I'm working on 3 projects, and since I've all 3 finished them sompositing in After Effects, but I've got a majure export failliure every time I try to render it out.
    I tried several formats, with no difference; every time I start rendering, after about 500-1500 frames (depends on the amount of effects used), it just stops rendering instantly, and when you just klick on a random place or button in the screen, it doesn't respond; it crashed.
    Is there some way of mending or avoiding this problem?
    Thank you in advance,
    Yours, Boyan.

    because as you described that it happens in CS3 and CS4 for me it sounds like a corrupted effect or plugin... did you moved/copied any 3rd party plugins or effects or effect presets from CS3 to CS4?
    most former (CS3) compatible 3rd Party Plugins sometime need an update to run properly on never versions of AE. Take a look at the vendors site for updates.
    do you have multiprocessing activated?
    if any further troubleshooting does not help try deinstalling all recently added codecs or decoder (like Xvid, ffmpegx, DivX) also take care of Perian component if installed.
    another solution is to take a look at quicktime settings where you can activate/deactivate legacy codecs. try that.
    otherwise really try to contact adobe free support trying to reproduce the problem there.

  • FCP integrates with After Effects? Help!

    I am doing an animation which comprises many videos and images flying across... My client wants me to deliver FCP file so he can update the videos/images himself later. But I am only good in doing animation in After Effects. I only know FCP for editing...
    Question is, should I try doing all the animation in FCP instead? Is there a way I can still do my animation in AE, yet my client can easily do updates in the FCP file?
    Please help! Thanks!

    If you think that the animation functions in FCP will do what you need then go for it.
    That way your client only needs a copy of your project -you can use the Media Manager to consolidate everything into a single folder, which you can pass on to them.
    Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, it was a wonderful spring afternoon here so I spent some time with the lady artist who has the studio space under mine, drinking beer down by the harbor.
