Creating more hard drive space?

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out a way to get rid of stuff to increase my hard drive space. Right now I can't afford an external drive, but I bought some flash drives. I removed a bunch of Photoshop files, but it only came to about 1 GB (I currently have about 15 GB available, and I've been told more GB available can help it perform better).
Any suggestions? For instance, do I have OS9 that I can delete? Any help would be appreciated, or maybe a link to an article.

In order to create enough extra space for the computer system and applications to
run more efficiently, you will have to be looking into music and photo kinds of files,
where many dozens of images or music titles add up tremendously; and then choose
to save them to CD media or copy their correct files from the computer to external
drive devices. However, the USB speed in older iMac G4 is USB1.1 so that may take
quite a bit of time to get them copied over. An externally enclosed FireWire400 HDD
would be much better in speed and efficiency, to move and archive your work files.
{And when you think you've gotten the correct files you want copied, be sure they are;
because that's when you would have to erase or trash, and empty trash the originals.}
The idea to thin out the size of unused System excess, as suggested in the earlier reply,
is a good one, for gaining back the capacity used by a full install of OS X. Be sure to
remove only those items which do not affect the computer's OS function. Extra languages
and old copies of apps you don't use, some kinds of duplicate fonts (be careful there), etc.
There are utilities such as What Size, which may help to tell what kinds of content, the file
size and locations in the system; & figure out what is safer to remove, among the contents.
Not sure what Omni Sweeper or other tools do, I've heard about them but use an external
hard disk drive (have a few, USB and FW) enclosed in suitable drive housing for OS X use.
So, I usually get around some situations by other means; as part of a maintenance routine.

That would depend on whether your model actually has a hard drive. If you have the new 2013 Retina model, then you have a fixed storage device built-in that cannot be modified after purchase.

Hello, I was wondering, where can I get more hard drive space on my laptop, so then I can install Boot camp and still have enough space left for my other stuff. I don't want to loose too much space, I already lost about 9.7 GB to installing Leopard.

I'm currently a student at the University of Waterloo (2B term starts in September). Here are some options for you:
1) Canada Computers at King/University.
2) CampusTech at UW
3) IST help desk at UW (for UW students only, I think)
Canada Computers is right at the corner of King/Uni. It's on the northwest corner of the intersection, slightly north of University. Look for a blue sign with yellow type within a 30 second walk north of the intersection. They sell all kinds of computer hardware, although they may or may not be able to do the actual transplant for you.
CampusTech is at the Student Life Centre, on the bottom floor (basement). Ask anyone at UW and they'll tell you how to find it. They're "Official Mac Certified", but I don't believe they sell hard drives. I bought my MacBook there and they did a RAM upgrade for me and so far it works well.
The CHIP (Computer Help Information Place) is on the 1st floor (basement) of the Math building at UW. You may have to be a Math student to use them, and if you're not under warranty they may charge you, but I had a problem with my keyboard shortly after buying my MacBook and went there and they fixed it for me. They have really short hours, though, so if you have a day job, this is probably not the best option.

iPhoto and Lightroom are similar apps - although LR is a far more capable app - and that the price it should be, of course. But the two apps are similar in that they both offer
Photo Management
Non-Destructive Processing
So, essentially, they both play the same part in the workflow.
The procedure would be to
Download the images from the camera into the Photo Manager (regardless of which one you choose)
Review and select in the Manager
Trash the unwanted with the Manager
Process the images - that is, in most cases edit them.
It is at this point - and only this point - that Photoshop might come into play. Both of these apps can act as a 'front-end' for Photoshop - after all, they're the Managers. But in truth, if you're using Lightroom then you very likely do not need Photoshop at all, and for anything that does require layers you can use one of the many - much less expensive - alternatives. But I think the common experience is that with Lightroom (like Aperture) the requirement for the sledgehammer that is Photoshop really fades away.
So pick one horse and ride it. Choose between LR and iPhoto. Use it like it's intended. Don't get involved in other necessary apps. Don't review before bringing the photo into the manager - that's what the manager is for.

More hard drive space on iPod than Computer, Help!

I have more hard drive space on my iPod than I do on my computer (I have a very old computer). Is there any possible way that I could transfer songs and videos onto my iPod and then be able to delete them from my computer, in order to make more space for new songs and videos?

Yes, you can do this.
With the iPod docked, you to preferences in iTunes and set the iPod to be updated manually. That way, it won't remove anything on the iPod unless you tell it to.
Then load as many CDs/Tunes/videos as you can onto your computer and manually copy them to the iPod. When done, you can delete those items without affecting the iPod and thus free up the space for the next load. Repeat as often as necessary.
If you left the iPod set to automatically update, each time you deleted the tunes from the PC, it would delete them from the iPod.
One thing you need to consider though is that if your music is only on the iPod, you'll loose everything if the iPod has a problem that either requires it to be replaced or reinitialized. This doesn't happen often, but it could happn. You should therefore ensure you've got a backup copy of everything (ie, the original CDs or that you burn copies of everything before you delete them.

Re-installing Windows 7 with more hard drive space via bootcamp - Help!

I have installed Windows 7 via bootcamp with success. However I didn't give enough hard drive space to Bootcamp (only 6MB available! Whoops...) Can I just delete the Boot Camp partition and start again or is it more complicated?

Need more hard drive space. Help with install WD My Book Studio 1TB EHD.

My MacBook Pro has no more disk space. I'm not tech savy so I'm hesitant to install Western Digital My Book Studio 1TB purchased. I read somewhere not to install the smartware that comes with this external drive because it might cause problems when running Time Machine. I want to move my photos on to EHD to free up space and start up Time Machine. Is there anything I should do first before attempting this. I have not upgraded to Lion yet should I do this after freeing up space and setting up Time Machine. I'm wondering if it will ask me questions during process that I won't be sure to accept or not. I'd appreciate any help or tips.

Do not install any software from WD. Prep the drive as follows:
Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

What would be easier to add more hard drive space?

Hi, I have an iMac G4, 1.07 GHz powerpc, 1.25 GB ram and a 40GB hard drive. I would like to have more space and saw 120-300 GB hard drives on Other World Computing and wonder if it something I could do myself (I installed the Ram upgrade myself) or would an external hard drive be better?
I want this for iTunes mostly so I can get an iPod touch for shows and podcasts. Thanks in advance for any help.

Geek Squad is definitely an option? But unless you just absolutely do not know you way around a screw driver and no longer have any dexterity then I would suggest doing it your self. It's really not as hard as you think, it just looks overwhelming.
Just make sure that you get the correct guide from iFixit, get all the tools that they specify, take your time and don't pry... You'll be fine.
If you are pressed for time and do not feel at all comfortable using tools then yeah take it someone to have them do it for you.
If you decide to perform this on your own just report here during the process and we'll be here to assist you with what we can.

MY PRECIOUS Hard Drive Space

First time posting a question.
So I have an iBook g4. My problem has to do with my Hard Drive. I am down to my last 2GB of hard drive space --oh no! What do I do to get more hard drive space??? I LOVE DOWNLOADING PODCASTS TO LISTEN TO WHEN I'M RELAXING AND DL MUSIC AND PHOTOS. I LOVE MY MAC and I'm really stupid when it comes to technical computer stuff. But i'm willing to do ANYTHING to keep my files intact. I need some help...

Hi Heyitsme and welcome to Apple Discussions.
"First time posting a question".. and a very good one it is too. You are sailing very close to the wind with only 2 GB of free space. !0% of free space is considered to be the absolute bare minimum with 15% or greater considered to be ideal.
In the long term you need to consider getting an external drive to store, perhaps, your iTunes library if it is large, and/or your iPhoto library. A better long term solution would be to, not only have an external for back up, but also have a larger internal drive installed. I believe 250 GB is the current largest size available for iBooks which require a PATA/EIDE 2½" drive. The drives themselves are relatively inexpensive, the installation more expensive unless you feel confident in DIY. Post back if you require more info.
In the short term you need to clear some space if only for the immediate health of your HD, OSX, and your data.
There are a few quick fixes that you can do immediately with no ill effects.
For example, on my iBook, I have removed GarageBand from Applications and its Loops from HD/Library/Application Support. As my iBook only has a combo drive and I'm not into video editing anyway I have trashed iDVD & iMovie. (Not DVD player). I have also trashed preloaded games and World Book, and its associated files.
OS X comes with a vast library of printer drivers, the large proportion of which will never be used by the average user.
Printer drivers are in the HD/Library/Printers folder. You can safely delete any named drivers that you don't have a printer for. For example, if you have a Canon, you can remove Epson, Lexmark, Hewlett Packard & Brother drivers. Epson alone takes up close to 1gb. You can even remove specific drivers from within the manufacturer's folder. For example, if you have an Epson C86 you can safely trash any other specific drivers in the Epson folder like C46, C66 etc. If, at a later date, you buy a printer whose driver you removed they can be added from your install disk, the disk that comes with the printer or downloaded.
A word of warning: More cautious heads than mine advise against messing in the HD/Library, but if you stick to the examples above, i.e. GarageBand loops, World Book and printer drivers you will be OK.
Certainly, I have had no problems with my system after removing those examples.
Check, too, in your music folder. If you have 'Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library' selected in iTunes preferences/Advanced it is possible that you have, say, 'xyz song' in the first level of your Music folder and the same song in Music/iTunes/iTunes Library. If you are sure that you do have 'xyz song' in iTunes, it is safe to delete from 'Music'. The same principle can apply to your Pictures folder and iPhoto Library, but staying with iTunes for a moment, with iTunes open select Edit in the menu bar, then 'Show duplicate songs'. You can trash duplicates if you are sure that they are true duplicates, i.e. exact name, artist and file size. Another little note of caution, neither iTunes nor iPhoto likes having its library messed with from within a Finder window. Resolve duplicates from within the respective application only.
If you are downloading a lot of stuff it is possible that you have a large 'Incomplete' folder built up over time from aborted downloads. This folder can be found in your 'Home' folder. It is perfectly safe to remove any and all files from this folder.
Downloaded applications can be a cause of wasted space. An application is usually downloaded as a .DMG (Disk Image). Once the app is installed in your Applications folder there is no necessity to keep the .DMG, although if it is a 'paid for' app it would be wise to back it up to an external/burn to a CD before removing it from your internal. Sometimes apps are downloaded as .zip files, leaving two largely redundant duplicates of the same thing. Again, back up one or the other file type to another medium before trashing if the app is paid for or difficult to find again.
Some excellent advice has been posted by ~JB~ , with corresponding words of caution.
Edit: The application Whatsize, linked to in ~JB~'s advice above, used to be a free application. It is now shareware, though I believe it is still free to use on smaller drives such as yours. You can get similar information using Finder, however.
Open a new Finder window, select Command (⌘) 2, for list view, then Command (⌘) J. Check the 'This window only' button and the 'Size' and 'Calculate all Sizes' boxes. Wait a few moments while it 'calculates'. You should be able to see which folders are taking up the most space. DO NOT REMOVE OR MESS WITHIN THE "SYSTEM" FOLDER or, with the exception of GarageBand loops and printers, the Library folder.
Dr Smoke has some advice here too.
Last but by no means least, when you have finished dumping your unwanted stuff in the trash, don't forget to empty it. You haven't regained the space until you do
…and definitely last this time: If in doubt leave it alone and ask!

Cannot get hard drive space back!

Hello.
My mac os 10.3.9 has 76.2 GB capacity and 1G RAM. It shows it has used 71.4GB and has only 4.8GB left.
I tried two ways to free more space. One was running the maintenance task by using "The Terminal Way", the other was using WhatSize to identify big files. I deleted at least more than 1G old useless files by WhatSize.
However, after restart the computer, I found the available capacity is still the same 4.8GB.
Could anyone tell me what's the problem? And how to free more hard drive space?

Mac OS X 10.4: About installation options although it says 10.4, explains the function of the Previous System Folder. You may have multiple Previous System folder and in that case they will be named something like Previous System, Previous System1, Previous System2, etc..
They will be located on your Macintosh HD, and can/should be deleted when you determine that your system is functioning normally. Retaining these Previous System Folders will take up space and may adversely affect your system.
Just drag any/all of these Previous System Folders to the trash and empty the trash.
The Admin Account is the one that you are currently using. You can verify this by going to System Preferences...>Accounts> You should see "My Account" with your name, and "Admin" next to your name.

Depending on what you need it for, you could just add an external (USB and/or FireWire) hard drive. Some are very reasonable at sale prices. An indication of what you plan on using the additional space for might be a good start as to recommendations.

Deauthorizing to create hard drive space

I am going to give my computer to my wife, and want to create hard drive space. This is a computer we already share, but maintain separate music libraries on iTunes under each of our user accounts. In attempting to create disc space, I wanted to remove my music from the computer, but we share the same iTunes account. So if I deauthorize the computer for my account, her music purchased from iTunes won't play either.
I thought that as a solution I would deauthorize the computer for the account. Then delete my iTunes library, then using my wife's account on the computer (which would still have songs purchased from iTunes on it) I would reauthorize the computer so that the computer would play songs we purchased, but I could save disc space. My hope is that if my library isn't on the computer when I reauthorize it, it will still play her library (even if we have a few of the same songs). Also this will allow me to authorize the new computer that I will purchase soon.
I hope this is clear, and hopefully someone can answer this.

Once you authorize five computers to play your music purchases, you can't listen to music you've purchased on a sixth computer until you deauthorize one of the already authorized computers. When you deauthorize a computer, you can't listen to any music that was purchased using your account on that computer. To authorize or deauthorize a computer, your computer needs to be connected to the Internet.
Each computer can be authorized to play music purchased with multiple Apple or AOL accounts. For example, if each member of your household has an Apple account and you share one computer, each person can choose whether to authorize the computer to play music purchased with their account. Similarly, multiple users can share the same computer and account and thereby use only one of the authorizations for the songs purchased with that account.

So, I don't think it is necessary for you to deauthorize the computer. If you move your iTunes Library to another machine, you simply authorize your account on that machine.
For further clarification, type in Authorizing or deauthorizing a computer in your search field after selecting iTunes and Music Store Help via the iTunes Help Menu.

Thanks for the advice. I have avoided iMovie Theater because that would soon use all of my free iCloud allowance (although that could be an option). I have been sharing to iTunes at 720p thinking that my picture using Apple TV would be better than Large. I see now that I could use about 30% less hard drive space by using Large instead. Do you think I will experience an annoying difference in picture quality?
