Diacritics in Pages

Good evening,
I'm writing some articles on linguistics in Page and it seems I've found a displaying mistake in fonts with diacritic symbols.
The problem is with the font Times New Roman, Arial. With Helvetica it's okay. Specifically the diacritic symbol below the letter displays wrong, there is a problem with horizontal space, the diacritic symbols is situated righter then the letter. You can easily check it by yourself, just type the word "u̯erdh", the diacritic symbol will be situated not below the letter "u".
Also an example seen in my screenshot:
TextEdit displays it correctly:
Has anybody got a solution?

>Neither Times Phonetic nor Times Phonetic IPA will substitute for Times/ That's pure nonsense. They are discrete Pi fonts, designed to work with the regular fonts. I have them installed on my machine and they behave quite nicely.
You misunderstand the meaning: Adobe Type 1 functions by character substitution, that is, for any graphic character that cannot be drawn by direct depiction onto legacy character sets such as Apple Roman, the glyph is drawn by substituting a character in Apple Roman. This is the case for monotonic Greek and mathematics in the Adobe Type 1 Symbol font in the original LaserWriter in 1985, in Adobe Sonata for music, in Adobe Carta for map-maping, in Adobe IPA and more. After 1990, this was extended to Adobe 'Expert' fonts that drew presentation forms for conventional English composition in the same way.
The Adobe IPA font has an O icon for OpenType. The OpenType icon is shown for any font program housed in the SFNT Spline Font file format of TrueType 1 and higher if that SFNT has the DSIG Digital Signature table. The font program itself may be CFF Compact Font File for PostScript (without Multiple Master) or TrueType (without Variations). The caveat is that the O for OpenType icon says nothing about whether the font file in fact draws using character substitution (all of the Adobe Type Library up to and beyond 2007 does so).
With regard to dynamic positioning of diacritics, Apple's approach starting in OS X 10.2 has been to do so without adding tables to the font file since if the dynamic position is arbitary and the numerosity of the permutations is not countable, a table-based approach is not mathematically meaninful. If, on the other hand, one wants dynamic diacritics for a bounded and countable set of permutations, then one can develop a LUT LookUp Table for it which is what the OpenType approach does.
Best wishes,
Henrik

  • Firefox doesn't display Romanian diacritics properly (Google Fonts)

    Hello,
I have a blog on Blogger, which is in Romanian. I am using Arimo (Google Font). I tested my blog on several popular browsers (Google Chrome, Opera, even Internet Explorer) to check if the diacritics are displayed properly. They work perfectly on all 3 browsers.
However, on Firefox, only two of them work Î & Â, while the other three (Ș, Ț, Ă) are replaced with another font. What could be the problem? I would love for all my visitors to see the same design, regardless of the browsers they use. Can you help? Thanks in advance.
Here's an image, to better understand my issue - http://i.imgur.com/257QyId.png

The link for my blog is http://ferdy.ro
@guigs2 - thank you filling a bug report.
    @cor-el,
As you can see, if you access my blog, it displayes the Arimo font, yet three Romanian diacritics (ș, ț, ă) are displayed with the Arial font. I used the sans-serif trick in my CSS code and it sort of fixes the problem, but not entirely.
Arimo has tons of diacritics (including Romanian diacritics) and special characters, yet this issue occurs only on Firefox and Yandex (tested today), however it is displayed properly in Chrome, Opera and even Internet Explorer.
The 'Allow pages to index...' setting is already enabled on my browser. Also, the Page Inspector generates a 'Not found' for me. This is weird, if it was because of the font, then it shouldn't work on all the browsers.
If there is nothing I can about it, then I'll switch to Arial entirely or keep it this way - it's very important for me to have the same design on all of the browsers.

  • Diacritics not pasting correctly

    Dear all,
I have attached a 2 page sample of a recent PDF document in English with a few diacritics. When I copy some text from the PDF to MS Word 2003, the pasted letters are fine but the diacritics come out as gobbledegook. Any suggestions please??
    Thank you,
    Ju

My pdf document declares at the beginning that its font is'Set in 10 on 12.5 pt Photina'. Does that help - is that a Unicode font? When I paste into MS Word, the font shows as PhotinaMT. I have tried every font in MS Word but none will display the diacritics correctly.
    Thanks

  • Problems with diacritics/accents and paging in web viewer

There seem to be some problems in displaying diacritics/accents in the web viewer (CR4E 2 update 4).
On viewing a multi-page report containing accents, when the report is paged forwards/backwards the accented characters are corrupted. This is easily reproduced by creating a report which contains nothing apart from text including accented characters.
The characters render correctly when exported to pdf.
Has anyone else had issues with accented characters?

  • Navajo diacritics in ID

I'm typesetting a book in ID CS6 that uses many Navajo diacritics, but I can't get them to show up with any font I've tried, including Times New Roman Navajo. The Word document that I poured uses plain old Times New Roman and most (but not all show up in Word, both on screen and printed. But when poured into ID they just show up as missing glyphs. Any ideas? Max OS 10.6.8, Suitcase Fusion 3.

I see no highlighted missing glyphs in your sample - but I don't see any barred L, and I am surprised you can get through a whole page of Navaho discussion without seeing it once. When you post such a sample, a screenshot of proper display (and/or a screenshot of the improper display on your side) is helpful.
Having worked in quite a few similar "languages of lesser diffusion" I've found that it very much matters how it was keyed, and whether or not the Word source relies on combining glyphs. I'm guessing it did.  Saving out raw Unicode text from Word (or RTF, alternately, but with more flaky results) is a trick I've used quite often to work around such issues. I think it boils down to complexities in the Word format versus InDesign's Word importer.
You are placing text, aren't you? When you say "poured" I am guessing that you're not copy/pasting a book-length linguistic text and trusting MS Word and OS X clipboard to play nicely together.

  • Font Editing to include diacritics creates havok.

Adobe font editing in FontLab, Adobe Creative Suite font problems, Font book
    OS X 10.4.5
    CS2 InDesign 4.0.2
    Photoshop 9.0
    FontLab 5.0
MacBook Pro with Intel Core Duo
We have used FontLab to edit Adobe Caslon Pro to add diacritics for Hindi which are not available in the font. These are however, composite edits using existing components only. There are only 12 characters in this version needed.
Fonts are now displaying incorrectly, or missing all around. FontBook is 'finding' files for fonts of entirely different font families. Also they are displaying incorrectly there as well. In Safari some fonts are displaying in some kind of symbol which is not readable.
Upon launching InDesign now "Bad Font Detected" error is regularly coming up with a specific font listed. None of which are the fonts that we have modified.
I have contacted Adobe which we have a tech support contract with, however they do not wish to troubleshoot this due to the modified font which I can appreciate. However, we publish books and have a need to represent these languages and have not been able to locate good quality fonts with diacritics.
It is difficult to explain all the problems here. Possibly someone could recommend a troubleshooting path, as we've been bounced back and forth between Apple and Adobe and FontLab-- all seeming to point to the other. The problems are increasing exponentially. when I just copied this text to spell check it in TexEdit it pasted in looking like this:
    bf3k3DCAGAH
    VfE3/CWxalzÇ3GACAE
    You get the idea . . .
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am assuming that you are generating OpenType fonts from FontLab. The Windows and Mac Postscript Type 1 font formats can't represent what's in Caslon Pro.
Unfortunately, you often can't get away with inporting an OTF font into FontLab and regenerating it. FontLab imposes its own defaults, and offers a simpler interface than the set of tools which Adobe uses to generate its Pro OpenType fonts. A technically proficient designer could fix the problems in FontLab, but it is non-trivial - a day's work at least, possibly two or three for the first face. If you want to look further yourself, the problems are most likely in:
    - name table: font menu names are messed up
    - Unicode camp subtable: sounds liike Unicode values are no longer correct
    - OS/2 code page ranges: check style linking, code page ranges.
I suggest you ask on the FontLab list for someone who can do contract work for this.

  • Discussion of opening Keynote, Numbers & Pages in iWork '09

Install iWork '09.  Then you need to check for new software updates using the upper top left apple icon and selecting Software Update.  You'll probably get an update 9.1.  Load it.  Themn check again for Software Update.  You'll then probably get 5.1.1.  Load it.  A message will; come up that you are missing some files, so again install iWork '09.  The  three apps (Pages, Niumbers, and Keynote) should open and work properly.

All Unicode fonts should work in pages. The only caveat would be if you need characters which depend on OpenType features, because OS X does not always have full support of OpenType. Examples might be Latin characters with diacritics that have no Unicode codepoint of their own, but must be generated from the base letter and the diacritic seperately. Whether IndUni and the texts you input will display totally correctly in Pages I don't know, but I am sure there are other fonts that will do so. Apple's own font is Lucida Grande.
    Do you use IAST transcription?
If you would like to send me IndUni and a sample text I'd be happy to put it on Pages and send you back a screenshot (tom at bluesky dot org).
PS OS X cannot use Windows Devanagari fonts.

  • Diacritics disapear while exporting to RTF

I am typesetting Croatian text, with lot of diacritics. When I export finished layout to RTF so I can import it back to Word or to some other text processor, these diacritis are repleced by some characters in wrong encodings. I am using InDesign CS5 (version 7.0.4) on Mac computer. The same thing happens with importing/pasting in Word, Pages, TextEdit, any e-mail program etc. Has anybody any idea about the solution?
For those who are willing to play a little bit with this, here is the sample sentence in Croatian with some critical characters (čćžđš):
"U zimskim mjesecima u toploj kuhinji djeca su pozorno slušala zanimljive priče iz starine, priče o duhovima i mrtvacima, o doživljenim događajima, kao i o događajima u kojima roditelji nisu sudjelovali, ali koje su se prepričavale u selu."
Try to paste/input this sentence  in InDesign CS5, then export story to rtf, and then import the rtf in Word or Pages, or simply try to copy from InDesign and paste it to Word/Pages.
I would appreciate any suggestions or solutions.

    Dear Joel,
somehow I lost the contact with this thread, and I somehow used some ad hoc methods to help myself in those rare cases when I had to export anything from ID back to Word during last year. To my disapointment, today when I installed brand new CS6 and tried to export the text to epub and rtf- in all the three cases there was the same error: my source text in ID was
    čćžđšČĆŽĐŠ
and what I have got in epub and rtf was:
    ËÊæπ»∆Æ–©
and this happens with exporting as well as with copy-paste.
Strangely enough, when I paste to another Adobe application there is no problem. Still more strange is that when I paste the text, for example in DW it is pasted corectly, then if I copy it from DW and paste it in Text Edit or Pages, for example, it goes without the problem. It really drives me crazy. I myself am not without experience with different typographies (devanagary, nastaliq) and I was very happy to see that the support for Devanagari is finally included in this new version of ID. But this problem with Croatian diactitics ramained mistery to me.
(for your info, I was using Adobe Garamond Pro and couple of other fonts. They all went through bad, except Arial Unicode which gave almost exact result, messing just one character.)
Thank you once more for your answer.

  • 2 kinds of paragraph marks in TextEdit and Pages

When cleaning out the garbage in an MS Word file, I often paste the text into TextEdit; then, with the "Make Plain Text" command, I transformt the formatted text into ASCII text. Then I copy this plain text and paste it into a Pages file. But a weird thing happens, all the paragraph marks look the same when the Invisible Characters are shown; but, if I go into find and replace and search for paragraph returns, "¶", Pages doesn't find anything. Apparently, the paragraph returns that TextEdit uses in Plain Text mode are different from the Paragraph Returns that Pages uses.
I can resolve this problem by copying a paragraph return symbol, pasting it into the Find window and then Replacing all the paragraph returns with the native Pages kind of Return. After I do that, everything looks exactly the same, but now I can Find paragraph returns.
What is going on here? Why is "¶" in TextEdit different from "¶" in Pages? And is there a way in the Find/Replace window to type in the TextEdit version on the keyboard. In the Find/Replace windos of Pages the Pages version of "¶" can be typed in with Option-Return and the Line Break symbol can be typed in with Control-Return; so, I am looking for a keyboard shortcut for the TextEdit version of "¶."
It would be nice to get that keyboard shortcut, but any information on this issue would be welcome.
    (I use a Mac OSX 10.8.5, Pages 09, TextEdit 1.8.)

Whenever I use the / (slash) in TextEdit or in Pages with the letters o or l the slash gets combined with the letters instead of being separate to the right side of the letters(example l/).
This is caused by using certain old versions of Apple fonts from OS 9 (I think Palatino is one) instead of the new versions from OS X. It is best to remove these if possible. Or you can select them in the Font panel and hit the gear wheel at the bottom left and open the Typography tab and uncheck a certain box (combining diacritics I think).

  • Open Pages from Discoverer Report

    Hi,
Is there a way to invoke a webpage or even better, an oracle function (that links to forms or self-service) from a discoverer report row ?
for example, I want a report for employees where the person looking at the report will click on the employee name and is taken straight to the person details page for that employee.
    Regards.

    Hi,
You can create a link to a form function using fnd_run_function.get_run_function_url. You can create a calculation either in a view or using a calculated item in the EUL (you will have to map the get_run_function_url in the EUL to do this). You then set the content type property of the EUL item to FILE so that when the item is selected in the workbook it appears as a hyperlink.
Most forms in apps except parameters so that you can pass the employee id to the form and the form will open up with the employee record. For example, if you are using a seed HR person form you create a calculation,
    fnd_run_function.get_run_function_url(3494      -- PERWSHRG-404
                                         ,800       -- HR
                                         ,fnd_global.RESP_ID     -- caller's responsibility
                                         ,0        -- Business Group
                                         ,         -- Parameters
         'P_PERSON_ID='||TO_CHAR(person_id, 'fm9999999999999')||
         ' P_EFFECTIVE_DATE='||TO_CHAR(SYSDATE, 'YYYY/MM/DD'))Rod West

In Pages 09 I could add a filename to the footer. If I saved a document with a new filename, this would then be automatically updated in the footer in the new document.  I cannot find out how to update the Filename in pages 5, other than doing it manually.
Is this yet another example of the new iWork being dumbed down?  Also missing is the ability to use keyboard shortcuts for formatting, and a lot of the Inspector features.
Do I have to go back to Pages 09 for all the missing features?

    Feature removed in Pages 5.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Trash/archive Pages 5 after Exporting any Pages 5 docs to Pages '09 files.

  • Can not refresh page after save properly(When not saving master record)

    I am using jdeveloper 11g R2 (11.1.2.3) JSF Facelet
In some use case I have Address as master table and Person as detail table
For some business reason I need to don't save same addresses
    eg:
If +1 Test St+ is in database already and new user coming and adding this address with new person
I need to use the row in database not creating a new address
I do saving in doDML method of Address with some hashing algorithm and it is fine
My problem is that I can not refresh page after save properly
User coming to page think Adding a new address and a new person but in fact no new
address added because of business I describe above
Any ideas how I can implement this?
    Appreciate that
    Regards
    Mohsen

    Hi,
from your description it is not clear why the page doesn't refresh. It could be a problem in your implementation code - who knows. What if you perform the address check on a command button that actually submits the new address? If the check returns true (address exists) you would call row.refresh(forget new row); and re-query the view object so the address coming from the database is displayed. If you wanted to use the doDML then yuou need to be aware that doDML doesn't help removing the row the user created. It just ignores the database update but the entity is still around, which in my suggested solution wont be the case.

  • Pages '08 lock ups

A couple months ago, I started having issues with Pages '08. It would lock up while I was typing, or even something as simple as scrolling the page down. All I would get was the little rainbow wheel and a locked up document. At first I thought it was just the one file I was working on, but now it happens all the time. It locks up so bad sometimes that it forces a restart of the computer. No other programs are having this issue. Should i just reinstall Pages '08 from the disc or what. Cause this has made my main wordprocessing program completely useless. I'm on Mac OSX 10.5.8

    Update:
Well I think I got it figured out. For some reason, the spell checker was causing the problem. I've always had it set to "Check spelling as you type", but for some reason that is now causing Pages to lock up. So my work around is to simply turn off the "Check Spelling as you type" option, and now there are no more lock ups.
