Drive Cache Errors in Logs

I noticed that the same two entries in /var/log/errors are flooding my logs and I would like to know if this is an issue I can resolve or a red flag for bigger things...
Jun 2 11:18:12 ghost kernel: sd 2:2:0:0: [sda] Asking for cache data failed
Jun 2 11:18:12 ghost kernel: sd 2:2:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through
Does anyone know whats causing the entries above and how I can resolve this?

is your drive new or old, you can ignore this message since the kernel thinks that the drive does not support caching. if your drive supports caching but the kernel is not recognizing it, you can change it yourself by using hdparm/sdparm

  • URGENT Bridge and cache error photo corrupted NEED HELP

We were going to edit a photo and upon opening it and error came up and said: "edit bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. please try purging the central cache in cache peferences to correct situation"
We solved the cache problem by purging it but the photo is corrupted! Furthermore, the photo turned red and 1/3 of the photo has been mysteriously turned black!  It only briefly returns to normal after cache problem in adobe bridge. It turns normal but only for a split second!!! WE NEED THIS PHOTO RESTORED TO ORIGINAL CONDITION BEFORE THE CACHE ERROR.
    Thank you for help

Your photo may be lost, I'm sorry to say.
Check your Windows System Event log and look for disk errors.  Disks do fail, and if there have been unrecoverable errors you'll see them in the event log.
A failing disk is not something to be left alone.  I hope you have a recent backup - if not, make one right away, then replace any failing disk drive ASAP, or you chance losing more data.  I always recommend high-reliability enterprise class disk drives such as Western Digital RE4.  They're not that much more expensive, and lost data can be worth a lot.

    Hello Abubaker,
It crashed due to a parity error.
     Imprecise Data Parity Error
     Imprecise Data Parity Error
Which in other words means, a temporary error in memory. On single occurence adivice is to monitor the supervisor for re-occurence of such failure again. You can monitor it for 24 - 48 hours and if its a hard failure , the likelyhood of issue coming again is more and you need to replace supervisor. If it does not repeat you can consider this as a one time issue and contnue using it.
Hope this helps and please always rate useful posts.
    Thanks,
    Madhu

  • Flash drive IO error

Hello I have an issue with one 8GB microSD card and my laptop. This isuue doesn't appear nither with another 4GB microSD nor with my PC. This drive mounts successfully and I can even read/write smal amounts of data (like echo abc>/mnt/test or cat /mnt/test) But whan I'm trying to read/write more data after near 100 MB of exchanging IO stops and I have kernel log like below:

    formatting of card doesn't help.
    Any idea?
    Thanks.

Have you tried the card in different usb ports or a different pc/device?
If you have & gotten the same results I would say the card is dead.

  • Cache error message in Adobe Bridge CS6

I am continuing to get a cache error message despite purging the cache several time on different occassion via the Preferences. Adobe Bridge now seems to be frozen on Building Criteria. The platform I am using iMac OSX 10.8.5. I have rebooted the machine a couple of times to no avail. Any advice

If Windows, search your event viewer for something like "The device \Device\Ide\iaStore0 did not respond within the timeout period." Since this
is kind of a hardware issue, there might be a similar thing happening on MACs. If you see this warning check what driver you are using for Intel
Rapid Storage Technology. I was using version 10.x and the latest from Intel is 12.x. Intel cautions you not to use this updated driver without
checking with the system manufacturer, which in my case, Asus, maintained that 10.x was the latest approved driver. I installed the 12.x driver
directly from Intel despite the warning, and the problem seems to have been resolved. I post in case this gives someone else a clue to solve
    this nagging problem.
Oh, this might be particularly significant if you have recently installed a larger hard disk.

  • Debugging Drive Cache

I am writing a custom plugin using Drive 3.0.1.104.  For the most part, my plugin is working well.  Occasionally, however, it looks like the Drive cache is not consistent with state of the content in my CMS.  When this happens, I notice the wrong context menu items will be enabled in Finder/Explorer (e.g., "Check In..." vs. "Cancel Check Out..."), and the Drive icon in InDesign does not contain a checkmark or a pencil.  When I look in the logs, I will often see exceptions like "FileSystemException: Invalid Handle" or "ModelObjectNotFoundException: Cannot find class com.adobe.drive.data.internal.model.Asset with id='144'".
I assume this is due to me sending inconsistent information to Drive via the UpdateRecipe.  However, since Drive is a black box and this is happening intermittently, it makes it extremely difficult to debug issues like these.  Is there any way to open the hsqldb database so that I can try to understand the current state of the Drive cache?  I have downloaded hsqldb, but don't have the password to get into the database.
    Thanks,
    Rich

The database files of Adobe Drive are under the following folder:
    Win XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[current-machine-user]\Application Data\Adobe\CS5ServiceManager\database
    Win 7: C:\Users\[current-machine-user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CS5ServiceManager\database
    Mac: /Users/[current-machine-user]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CS5ServiceManager\database
To browse database, execute the following command to launch hsqldb util.
    java -cp [path-to-hsqldb.jar] org.hsqldb.util.DatabaseManagerSwing
A 'Connect' dialog will appear. Input the following info In 'Connect' dialog to open the database.
    Type: HSQL Database Engine Standalone
URL: jdbc:hsqldb:file:[path-to-database, above shows the details]/adrive-db
    User: SA
    Password:[no password, leave it blank]
After successfully connect to the database, you can input sql to browse database content.

  • "startup drive full" error - help

I have gotten a "startup drive full" error a couple of times while using Microsoft Word. It usually occurs when I am trying to save something. My drives are no where near full. What is causing this? How do I fix it?

One of the reasons (when one exists) for a startup drive full message,
could be if the computer has several temporary files and virtual memory
files on the hard disk drive; this could happen if you have insufficient
installed chip RAM and the computer is using HDD free-space as RAM.
And if you are multi-tasking in Mac OS X, there may be a point where
the drive is fully in-use. The utility "Activity Monitor" could tell you what
is happening in the system at different intervals and perhaps you could
tell what is running in there and using a lot of virtual memory; and also
what that utility says is going on elsewhere at the same time.
You may have to boot the computer from the Installer disc and use
the version of Disk Utility on that (in the Installer's menubar is where
you find options, other than running the installer on that disc) to run
'repair disk.' There also may be some caches and other files on the
drive which are not properly being cleared after quitting applications
or after saving works in progress.
A variety of maintenance tasks can be performed to help the Mac
run better; and maybe these are overdue. I use an easy way out
and do not boot into the single user or other modes to do house-
keeping chores in OS X 10; the software (runs free) I choose to
have do these, on occasion, is called OnyX and is a download
from Titanium Software online. An easy search, to get there and
see the correct download for the OSX version your machine runs.
The OnyX 'automation' selection has several check-boxes and
a few times a year, I run all of the options shown there; otherwise
I only run the default set, and then have the utility automatically
restart itself afterward. There are settings in the OnyX preferences.
Not sure what else may be going on in the computer's hard disk
drive; but to use the boot/install disc's Disk Utility to 'repair disk'
and also to verify or see the status of SMART, may tell you if
the hard disk drive is starting to fail. (Although it could stop work-
ing and not say it was failing; checking anyway, is easy enough.)
If you have a third-party disk utility such as Drive Genius or
maybe DiskWarrior, these may be able to check and repair
some aspects of the hard disk drive's files. Some of these
tools are better at some tasks than others; and so I am not
sure which one(s) are best at specific jobs. Each is a bit
different and so there are times where having more than one
could be very handy... if one knew what they did, and when
to use one over another third-party disk utility. (I don't!)
At some point, it is very handy to have an externally enclosed
FireWire hard disk drive, and be knowledgeable and practiced
in making bootable clones of the computer's hard disk drive
and the contents there in. This can give you great backups
with the ability to clone the complete disk image back as it
was, but on to a repaired or low-level reformatted HDD. I use
a free-running utility to clone, Carbon Copy Cloner.
Hopefully a fix as simple as using the Disk Utility found in
the installer (hold C key on startup with disc in optical drive)
    and do not launch the installer, use Disk Utility from menubar;
and 'repair disk' may help. If there is a defect in the Hard Disk
Drive (HDD) a repair may help; or a more invasive approach
may be required, to include other tools in the Disk Utility, which
could totally erase all your stuff plus the OS from that hard drive.
Not sure how much experience you have in any of this; so at
    this point...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Default Cache Error on a G4 Quicksilver

So I've got a G4 quicksilver and it will not boot.
I tried all the different ways to get it to boot. Holding "c" with a boot disk, checking the battery, unplugging ram one at a time, etc...
The problem is, when I hold "option" to get into the disk boot option screen, is sees the drives (Operating System Drive & a Boot CD). I select either one, and a which screen pops up and says: "Default Cache Error, type "mac-boot" to boot the computers or type "shut-down" to shut down the computer.
I've tried every combo and it does one of these things:
    Locks up on black screen
White screen pops back up and crashes
Starts loading (apple logo on screen) then the circle slash (ø) pops up like there
    Please help.

Ok, So I got the OEM install disks with the Aplle Hardware tester. Here are some pictures of the issues I had durring this:
Boot 1) In inserted the Hardware disk and got it to boot first time, here are those pictures:
It looks like I had a issue with the Logic board or somthing that was plugged into it. as seen here: http://meistergaugefaces.com/mac/mac_6.JPG
    My hardware profile: http://meistergaugefaces.com/mac/mac_7. JPG
It got all the way though the Logic board and mass storage scan, but half way through the RAM the crashes started back up. Here are a few more pictures of those misc errors:
Booted off the hardware disk and got these 2 on the 2nd boot:

  • Reset/change password error - cannot log in to builder - HELP!

I'm encountering the same problem I described some time ago here: Reset/change password error - cannot log in to builder
Briefly, the builder tells me I must change my password. When I attempt to do so, the password change page displays a null username, and tells me that my existing password is invalid. The same password failure occurs using the new password emailed to me by the "Rest password" function.
I've cleared my browser cache, closed the browser, rebooted my client (WinXP), to no avail.
    Anyone able to help?
    Thanks
    jd

    Update:
Workaround: log in using a different client machine.
    Scary.
It looks the same problem reported, without response, here: Apex.oracle.com SaaS Login - Must Change Password.

If your startup disk says it is full, you need to remove some of your stuff.
Either move some documents/movies/pictures to an external drive (if you want to keep them), or delete them from your startup drive. Then, empty the Trash.
If you move them to an external, you will still have to delete them from the internal drive.
That won't fix Office (I don't think), but it will make everything run better. You need a minimum of 10GB free (more would be better).
You might need to reinstall Office. It should work without problem (well, at least as little problem as Office can muster).

  • Powermac g5 7,3 drive bay fan: 2fan/4/7: drive bay error

    Hello
I have a problem with my G5 Powermac. It is an G5 dual 2x2Ghz late 2004 7,3. 5 Gb. ram. Running Leopard. I am in a real trouble
A week ago, the system showed the black transparent screen of critic error ("press the power button for several seconds...") I started the system again and showed problems
I ran the hardware test disc. It showed "2fan/4/7: drive bay" error
Then I replaced the battery for a new one, then I reset the PMU and PRAM
Computer turned on. 15 min of normal use. It showed the error screen again.
Every time I reset the PMU, the fan works, but now it gets stopped in the gray window, and the apple logo is replaced by the "forbidden" icon
It´s a very complicated situation to replace this fan, because you have to disassemble the whole main board to replace the fan in the top floor (the drive bay) and I am not sure that it is a problem of the fan (plus, you have to find a second hand part, it is discontinued) and I think I could "hurt" the computer trying to replace it by my self
Sorry for my poor english. I´m from Spain
    Any help will be appreciated
    Thank You

I tried to boot it on safe mode this morning. It showed the forbidden icon on gray screen at startup. I waited for a while and tried again in normal mode. Booted perfectly and showed me the log about the crash. I place it here, but I can't give it format because I write from my iPod and it doesn't show the tools, only the text box:

I downloaded istat pro and installed it. Temperature is fine (51 top in both processors) rpm is right in all the fans BUT the drive bay rpm fan is constant: 1000 rpm without any variation
After 15 minutes, it freezes. No response. I only plugged the monitor and the keyboard and mouse (with cords. I stopped using the magic mouse since the problem appeared and the computer does not have Bluetooth included, I use an USB dongle that now is unplugged)
That's all the news for now

  • Install cache error

I'm trying to install itunes 10.6 on windows 7 home premium.  it downloads the software and starts to install.  I receive an error:  "an error occurred while attempting to create the directory c:/program data/apple/installer cache" I click retry several times and no luck so I have to click cancel and it rollsback the installation. I have downloaded a new copy of the installer from another computer and receive the same error.  I dropped the UAC on the system to none.  That did not work, it give me the same error.  I have tried renaming the Installer Cache to a temp name and when installing again, I the error says it doesn't have the permissions to create the directory.  I have gone into the control panel and attempted to repair bonjour, itunes, apple mobile device support, apple software update and quicktime and all of them have reported "The system cannot find the file specified."  I have tried running the install package with the right click Run as Administrator and the install cache error still occurs.  I have check the security on the file and it has my user name and full control on the parent and all items below.
When I plug in my iphone or ipod, it asks about updating to 5.1, I click download only. I then receive an error window "There was a problem downloading the software for the iphone or ipod.  The network connection could not be established"
I don't know if the two problems are related.  I'm at a stand still have have no other ideas of what to try next.  What suggestions might you have to solve this problem?
    Thanks for the help!
    Joel

I tried to rename the apple computer folder to _old and I received another error with another really funky folder name that looked like a SID.  I renamed that and reran.
Crikey. Probably that number (in the folder name) was the SQUID ("squished GUID") for the iTunes installation (or possibly one of the other associated components being installed). In addition to the error 5, that brings us to a total of three of the more exotic things that could possibly happen in this sort of file-access-problem context.
So, excellent work on your part getting past all that. Many thanks for reporting back with your resolution, too.
