Drives connected to TBD ejected improperly

I have 2 G-Tech Drives that are daisychained and connected via FW800 to my TBD. I put the computer to sleep last night and this morning I had the message about a drive not being ejected properly but the drives were still in finder but were not accessible. Why did this happen? I keep pictures on the external and wouldn't want them to be corrupted if this happens again.

I had that happening with some regularity, also with G-Drives connected via the FW800 port on my ATD. It turned into a real problem a couple of days ago when the drives were being 'disconnected' every 10 minutes or so. I played around with various configurations and found that the fault was with one of the G-Drives. It's now being replaced under warranty and I haven't had a problem with the remaining drive since.
So it may be a drive, rather than a Display, issue. It was in my case.

I have a Free Agent external backup hard drive connected to my iMac Intel desktop via USB, I never unplug it.  Why do I get an error message, from time to time, upon startup stating, "Disk was disconnected improperly.  Always eject disk before disconnecting."?

I never unplug the external harddrive, and the error message comes up only occassionaly upon startup.  Maybe the USB connection gets disrupted enough to cause the computer to see it as disconnected and then reconnected while the iMac is powered.

  • My second internal drive ejects improperly

I installed an optical drive when I purchased my iMac in June 2012. When my iMac falls asleep the otical drive ejects and I have to restart to remount it since disk doctor can't see it. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to solve it?

    Hello babowa,
I misspoke, I installed a 2nd internal hard drive, a Fusion 2 TB drive. It "ejects improperly" when the iMac is put to sleep. I've set up energy preferences to either put the hard drive to sleep whenever possible and have also checked that option off with the same results. I create aliases on the side bar for easy access to folders on that drive that disappear when this happens and I have to keep recreating them. I installed the internal drive to avoid the issue of external drives ejecting improperly which forces me to restart my machine or the ext. drive. I also wanted to take advantage of the speed gain from the internal connection. I can't find any info with anyone else having this problem. The Fusion drive is partitioned into 3 volumes. I'm going to reformat it into 1 and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks for your response, although it wasn't helpful.

You are not alone. Thousands have this problem, on various models of Macs. Short answer, it has something to do with the disk going to sleep (possibly?). You can't do anything about it and Apple won't address the problem. Maybe you should buy a time capsule. Just keep giving them money and use their proprietary equipment.

  • LaCie 3TB external hard drive ejecting improperly

Anybody have experiences with a LaCie external hard drive ejecting improperly? Not able to run long enough to do proper back ups and file maintenace. Closes or ejects on its own.

I just replaced a 2TB LaCie with an 8TB model and encountered the same problem I would get a "disc improperly ejected" message and since my iTunes library is stored there the app would go into kernel panic and require a force quit. Very annoying.
I switched from the thunderbolt ports to the USB and have not had any issues since.
I never had any issue with my My older HD so I think maybe the Thunderbolt connector that came with the new drive was bad.

  • Time Capsule can't backup external hard drives connected to it. Got that.

Hello Apple Support Communities! This is my first post. Hope this finds you all well My first year as an Apple user. I bought a 2-Tb TC and am running my first backup to my MacBook as I write this.
Problem statement: TC can't backup external hard drives connected directly to it, but the ones connected to the Macs that are connected wirelessly to it. Duly noted. However, the Spotlight will reindex the hard drives connected to the Mac and that will take hours; the whole backup will take days. Thus, excluding the hard drives at "System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy tab" will probably help reduce the time of backup, or just ejecting them will do too. That itself has not proven effective coz it's still taking forever (50Gb in 2 days, still going).
    Questions:
    1) Do I wait until my first backup to my MacBook's internal hard drive is done before I connect my hard drives to my MacBook and attempt another backup? If yes, how do I go about the excessive time Spotlight reindexing takes if I intend to backup my hard drives connected to my MacBook?
    2) Is there any other way of speeding up the first-time backup?
*Note: All versions of OS and firmwares are up-to-date. TC is connected to an external wireless router. TC is intended to be used as backup device and / or file server only.

How do I backup the externel hard drives connected to my MB. I was under the impression that that has already been done, because I've read it somewhere in a discussion that said it's done automatically unless I exclude it from a backup, which I didn't. So it's supposed to backup the external hard drivestoo because I had them connected to my MB the entire time during the backups.
By default an external drive is excluded.. the list is odd.. if I plug a drive into the mac.. it immediately is listed as excluded.
This is not the list of included.. this is the list of excluded.. remove it from the excluded list to include it.
It is kind of reverse polish notation in backups.
If I want to enter the Time Machine, should I enter it with the TM turned on or off?
Not sure what the question means. If you use the star wars display and want to recover files then use TM off.. but read up pondini.. how to do restore etc.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
15A in particular on the how to use TM.
When do I uplug the ethernet and use the wireless connection instead?
Once you have finished the main backup you can go back to wireless. The incremental backups are mostly very small.

  • HT5172 Glad to have USB capability on my new iMac.  Been in Mac world all of 2 days now.  Question - I downloaded photos from a Centron flash drive and am wondering if flash drives have to be ejected the same as on a PC?  Can't find how to do it.  Thanks.

Been in the iMac world now all of 2 days.  I'm glad to have USB capability.  I downloaded photos from a Centron flash drive and now need to remove the flash drive.  Do you eject flash drives on iMacs as we did on PC's?  Can't find an answer in the support area.  Thanks...

Yes. All external drives regardless of how they are connected must be ejected before they can be unplugged.

  • Do you have to setup a disk drive connected to a macbook or should it just work straight away when plugged in?

Do you have to setup a disk drive connected to a macbook or should it just work straight away when plugged in?

The Finder shouldn't show an empty optical drive. If the disk gets automatically ejected, there may be problems with the drive, or you may be inserting a blank CD or DVD into a drive incapable of burning it.

  • Externals being ejected improperly

I have five external drives connected to my 27 inc 3.2 GHz i# iMac. When the computer goes to sleep, it frequently returns with the "This disk was not ejected properly" message and one of the drives is no longer mounted. Sometimes I can get it remounted using Disk Utility, sometimes I need to do a complete restart.
If this happens often enough to one of the drives, I have to run Disk Utilities "Repair disk several times to get the data back.
Is anyone else having this issue, and what can be done about this.
FYI - I never had this problem with my older 20 inch iMac with the same drives.

yes it shows up, but only the empty partition (drive) that still works, connected through thunderbolt, i haven't tried a different computer yet, i did however check the enclosure by switching the working drive with the non working drive and that still gets picked up and the important drive is still no where to be found, just seems so strange that we are here in this age and a simple unhooking of wiring can break something

  • 2.5 USB drives can not be ejected for some odd reasons

Ever since the last update every time i connect a 2.5 USB drive i can never eject according to Disk Utilities, i get that "quit applications" connected to the drive etc,
I restarted, re connected the drive and tried running disk tools again ad with nothing open again it says the same thing!
Any ideas what might be causing this?
    Please advise
    Cheers

You might look at the Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder) to see if you can figure out what is running that might be related to files on the drive.
I also saw a donationware application MacWorld magazine reviewed called “What’s Keeping Me” which is supposed to do exactly what you are getting.

  • Updated to Maverick os 10.8.5 and began getting Lacie Thunderbolt error ejected improperly

Updated to Maverick os 10.8.5 and began getting Lacie Thunderbolt error ejected improperly continuously even when working with it- It shuts down by itself
    Frustrated!

Any further developments? I just got a brand new imac 27" and my lacie drives are experiencing the same thing, though I am using a usb cord since my drives are a bit older. This makes me think this is an Apple end problem because I have seen other threads with the same problem but with Seagate and WD (though I might have read somewhere that they all use the same harddrive components, just different exteriors but I could be wrong).
I also read that some people have ended up corrupting data and harddisks because of this, so I'm not using my drives until i find a solution to this problem. Apple, are you listening ?

  • Time machine can no longer see USB drive connected to airport extreme

According to what I read, as of March, a year ago March, with update 7.3.1 Time Machine will see the USB hard drive connected to the Airport Extreme. This was working fine. It no longer does. I had the latest airport extreme software and firmware updates. I tried going back to 7.3.1.
Does any one have any idea how to make Time Machine work again when connected to my airport extreme?

what exactly do you mean when you say that TM doesn't see the drive? do you mean you can not choose it as the destination TM drive in TM system preferences? do you see the airport drive mounted in finder? if yes, connect it directly to your mac and repair the disk (not permissions) with disk utility. then move it back to AEBS. see if that helps. if not try the following terminal command
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
it should not be necessary with drives connected to AEBS but it might work.

  • Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

    Hi,
I have a similar question. I have backed up my external hard drive through my computer, onto my TC. When I go into TM, it doesn't show the external hard drive unless it is connected to the computer. Can I access the info from the external hard drive that is on the TC if I don't have the hard drive plugged in? If so, how can I do that?
    Thanks,

  • Using external hard drive connected to desktop as time machine disk for laptop

I recently purchased an external hard drive for the purpose of backing up my laptop and desktop macs. Both are running Mountain Lion (10.7.5). The desktop is physically connected to both the hard drive and to my modem. I have enabled pretty much every sharing option on both the laptop and desktop. When my router crapped out I began just using the internet sharing capabiilty.
I have been able to chose the desktop as the disk for backing up my laptop, but I want to use the hard drive (connected to the desktop) as the disk. I cant figure out how to do this yet. I can easily access the hard drive by using either the "connect as user" option. I thought that perhaps I could broadcast the connection somehow as an airport connection, but I don't know how to, or if this is even possible.
The desktop is a mac mini, and the laptop is a macbook pro. Both were purchased in mid 2011.
