Erratic slowdowns on Win 7 machines

Due to corporate requirements, all the company pc's must be updated or replaced with Win 7 systems.
The first system I completed began life using LV 2011 with Win 7 and for the most part, things work pretty good though there are some glitches.  Once in particular will show up somewhat erratically with no pattern. Sometimes can go days or even weeks and sometimes twice a day.
It manifests itself by what appears to be a sudden pause in the execution of the system. Certain functions will recover but there is always something behind the scenes that will quickly cause things to not work.  The only visual indicators that I have observed is that the system time that I display on the UI stops updating. It usually ends up requiring an application shutdown and restart and occasionally a system reboot.
I had always thought there was something in my code that was driving this but after this week, am re-thinking that.  I have another application that has been running quite a long time on a Win xp box in anything from LV 8.6 to 2011.  Never a problem.  I have ported the app over to a brand new dell with win7 and loaded with LV 2013 (w/ update).  All of the sudden this thing will exhibit these strange pauses quite often.
It is much more noticeable on this system as it performs screen updates after each of the 12 or so individual tests that run consecutively. Once it wigs out, it never recovers even though it will continue to run through the tests, albiet very slowly.  The screen updates lag and cause the entire sequence to go from a three and a half minute sequence to a 12 minute sequence, give or take.
Before I go posting screen caps and code and all, I just wanted to see if there are any known issues when updating to a win 7 box (is 32 bit).  It seems to be centered around screen updates and perhaps global variables maybe ?    I keep my gv's to a minimum.   I run a basic four loop parallel architecture (Event Structure loop, screen update/global var loop, user event/ui state machine and, the execution state machine (does all the grunt work).
Are there any code issues known to not get along with win 7 ?     Win 7 display issues ?    global variables ?   constant time polling (45 ms delay in loop) ?   other ?
Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Yea, sorensens can be troublesome sometimes but I found that once you get them talking, there ususally are not any other troubles to deal with.
pwr sply is connected straight to computer usb. No special setups or anything.  I talk to the power sply a few times during the test sequence and get responses and would clearly expect a com error if there were issues there.  Only opening one instance with it and closing it on exit.
Have been playing with the code that impacts screen updates and have been able to reduce if not eliminate the glitch.  Certainly at least affecting it. Disabling certain display functions makes it go away (at least for the limited duration I have been able to test within) or at least reduces the impact.
I am convinced there is some display issue going on.  Bad part is, I may be able to band-aid it but not knowing the root cause means it could haunt me forever.
Who knows, could be a conflict with some corporate installed watchdog utility.   The fact that I found little to nothing related to this on the forums means it must be somewhat specific to what I have going on. That or everyone else who experienced it found the solution much faster than I.
If I do come up with anything definitive, I will certainly append this thread accordingly.
Onward I go.....

  • Network Printer connection between W2000 and Win 7 machine?

I have a HP 990CXI on a Win 2000 machine and I am trying to network connect to this printer from a win 7 machine but it cannot find a driver.  The HP site says that Win 7 should have an in-OS driver.  It seems that one is pointing the finger to the other!?

    Hi steve_podleski,
Your Deskjet 990c does have a built in driver in Windows 7.  The main challenge is getting Windows 2000 and Win7 to share resources.  I have steps written for Windows XP and Win7 but I don't know if they would work for Windows 2000.
Here is an excerpt from the document:
Step three: Setup a share account on each computer in the network
Create a common share account on each of the computers, including the computer that is sharing the printer to the rest of the network.  This share account must have the same name and password on each computer.
If you decide to use an existing account that appears on each computer all ready, this existing account must be password protected. If you do not want to password protect your default login, create a new share login as described in the following steps.
    Windows XP
    1. Click Start
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. Click User Accounts
    4. Click Create a new account.
    5. Enter the same user account name created as the share account on the Windows 7 computer.
    6. Click Next.
    7. Under “Pick an account type”, select ‘Computer Administrator’.
Note: In Windows XP you must select Computer Administrator in order setup a printer.
    8. After you new account is created, select it under ‘pick an account to change’.
    9. Click Create a password
    10. Enter the same password used when creating the share account on the Windows 7 computer, following the directions on the screen.
    11. Click Create Password button.
    12. Log off your current user account and log into the new share account to activate it.
    13. Once the computer is ready after logging into the share account, you can log off the share account and back into your regular user account.
    Windows 7
    1. Click Start
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. In the upper right corner ensure that View by has Large icons or Small icons selected.
    4. Click User Accounts
    5. Click Manage another account
    6. Click Create a new account
    7. Select Standard User
Note:  The account created should be created with the lowest security setting necessary.  Creating the share account as an administrator is discouraged.
    8. Enter a new user account name.  Use a name that is easy to remember as the account used for sharing resources across your network.  For example: ‘ShareAccount’
    9. After your new account is created, select it under “Choose the account you would like to change”.
    10. Click Create a Password
    11. Enter a new password, following the directions on the screen.
    12. Click Create Password button.
    13. Close any remaining opened windows, making a note of the new account name and password as you will need to create identical accounts and passwords on the other computers on your network.
    14. Log off your current user account and log into the new share account to activate it.
    15. Once the computer is ready after logging into the share account, you can log off the share account and back into your regular user account.

    Hi,
how to find using SCCM SQL query,  application deployed on win 7 machines with SCCM 2012 server or user/technician installed manually. Please let me know.

Thanks, is it not possible via any script also?
Like Torsten said, how can you tell the difference between CM12 installed applications and locally installed? Once you can answer that, then you can write report.

  • Trying to install Premier 6.5 on Win 7 machine

Receiving an error message when trying to install an old, but brand new just out of the package, Premier 6.5 onto my Win 7 machine.
Support was no help - he told me to look through questions here but I couldn't find anything similar. Am I out of luck and this version just won't play nicely with new Windows?
    Thanks!

Am I out of luck and this version just won't play nicely with new Windows?
Probably yes. I doubt you will get any answer better than that. It is, for all intents and purposes, a 10+ years old software and few will even dare and try this. You realyl should look into more contemporary software.

  • Printing problems for a win xp machine

I have a win XP machine on my airtunes network. i have tried everything under the sun including boujour, but can't send a print job from the XP machine to my printer. The printer is hooked up to the airtunes router. I have a powerbook G4 and power MAC G5 and have no problems spooling jobs to an epson 777i. I know the printer works, because i had it on the XP machine. Anyway i need some help. when in the XP machine i can see the printer on the network and it says that it is shared. When I try and print, it spools then gives me the error that there is a connection problem. I am using EZ armour on the PC (Anti virus and firewall), but I think I have the proper ports opened, because all my computers can see each other on the network.
Any suggestions before I go out of my mind (LOL).?

  • Problems networking Win 7 machines in workgroup

    Hi All.
I have 2 Win 7 machines and I am trying to share files between the two. Specifically, I want each to be able to see (read, write, edit, etc) the other's D drive (and all folders within). From one system, I can see the other system's D drive. But when I try
to open it, I get a Windows error:
    Network Error
    Windows cannot access \\COMPUTER-A\d
You do not have permission to access \\COMPUTER-A\d. Contact your network administrator to request access.
The Public folder on drive C IS shared. I replicated those settings and successfully shared my user folder (Snarl/snarl) on each C drive). But when I tried to replicate those settings for my D drive, it did not work.
The main source of confusion is why I'm able to share folders on drive C, but not share drive D in the same manner.  I have conducted extensive web searches and tried many different suggestions. I don't know how to troubleshoot further/resolve. Here's
    what I have already tried/checked:
    COMPUTER A is running Win 7 x86, while COMPUTER-B is running Win 7 64-bit.
Both are members of the same WORKGROUP.
The user on COMPUTER-A is 'Snarl.' The user on COMPUTER-B is 'snarl.' I tried adding a new user, 'snarl,' to COMPUTER-A, but Windows informed me that name was already in-use (as 'Snarl'--there is no user 'snarl' on COMPUTER-A).
    Neither user uses a password.
    Both network types are 'Home.'
D is not the Windows partition--C is.
The following are set on both systems:
    --Network discovery is on
--File and printer sharing is on
    --Public folder sharing is on
    --Password protected sharing is off
On the D drive for each system, I have carried out the following:
--Properties-->Sharing-->Advanced Sharing-->Share this folder is checked. Share name is "D"
When setting drive permissions on COMPUTER-A, I am not allowed to add a user from COMPUTER-B. I have tried the following:
Properties-->Sharing-->Advanced Sharing-->Permissions--> entered the username 'snarl' and clicked 'Check Names.' The name changes to COMPUTER-A\snarl. The "From this location" field is set to COMPUTER-A and is greyed out. When I try to
click the Locations... button to add users from COMPUTER-B, only COMPUTER-A is available. When I try to add the user manually (COMPUTER-B\Snarl), a "Name not found" box comes up and I am prompted to edit it. The same happens on COMPUTER-B--I cannot
    add a user from COMPUTER-A.
I realize using a HOMEGROUP might be easier, but I would like to understand how to carry this out in a WORKGROUP. I have tried everything I have found on the web.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
We cannot share a root of drive to the specific user over the workgroup. Where you add the User names to the "share with" list only applies to a workgroup where all members are using the same machine.
For your situation, we have two options:
    1. Share the D drive with Everyone, and all users in the workgroup can access it.
    2. Create a Homegroup.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Running .bat files as administrator on win 7 and win 2k8 machines

I have .bat which will be copied onto Win 7 and Win 2k8 machines remotely. The batch file contains scripts to stop and restart Windows services, like,
net stop "Adobe Acrobat Update Service".
Now when I run this batch file, I get "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied."
I understand that I need to run this batch file as administrator (here by administrator I mean, Windows default administrator.).
Does anyone have a solution for this?
P.S: 1) "run as" command inside the .bat file won't work, since you need to run the .bat file itself as administrator (here by administrator I mean, Windows default administrator.).
    2) I can create another batch file (say b.bat) containing the "run as" command and invoking the the original batch file (say a.bat), which has the command net stop "Adobe Acrobat Update Service". But still, this won't solve the issue, since you can run as,
the user, who has administrator privileges and not run as administrator (here by administrator I mean, Windows default administrator.) itself.

    Suhas,
Can you explain me why you want to do this?
Maby there are there some beter ways to achive your goal.
The reason why this doesn't work is UAC who strips the administrator tokens from your user account.
So it is not nesseary to use the default windows administrator account. Just a user with administrative priviliges will do you only need to run this command elevated.
There are several ways to run this command elevated:
Just right click on the batch file and choose the option run as administator.
Quite simple but a no go if you wanna have a fully automated solution
Use PsExec.exe  from the pstools suite (avaible
    here)
If you use the command like this:
    PSEXEC -u domain\user -p password -h net stop spooler
    PSEXEC -u domain\user -p password -h net start spooler
Or from a remote machine (pcX = remote management machine, pcY = machine where you want to restart the service.)
Execute this command on machine pcX:
    PSEXEC \\pcY -u domain\user -p password -h net stop spooler
    PSEXEC \\pcY -u domain\user -p password -h net start spooler
Create a sheduled task with the "highest privlilges" that executes your batch file.
    etc ...
    Kind Regards

  • How can I read a Win 8.1 Boot Disk on a Win 7 machine?

I just had what I think was a power supply failure on my HP desktop running Win 8.1.
My issue is, while the machine is away getting fixed, I need to be able to read content from the HDD, to use my HP Laptop to do work in the meantime.
I have a USB bridge that I often use to hook up to SATA drives, to read/write, etc.  But for this disk, when I connect it to the interface, and plug it into the Win 7 laptop USB, it shows up as a RAW drive, Keeps wanting me to format it.
I know this probably has to do with the encryption "feature" under UEFI, and Secure Boot, but I'm getting out of my depth with the nuances of 8.1.
I know it should be possible to read this disk, given the proper software, etc.  But how do I do it?  I really need access to some of this data, and read-only access would be fine with me, if that is all I can get.
I did create a "Recovery Hard Disk" for that machine on another drive, so I have that, but until I get the machine back, that doesn't seem to do me any good.  Or will it?  How?
Anyone have any ideas?  Any suggestions?  This is getting to be a major headache...
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Hi,
What's the disk type of Windows 8.1 system, GPT or NTFS? It's really hard to identify where the problem it is, but you can try to fix the Disk by using checkdsk command:
Open CMD, then type the command: Chkdsk /f X: X stands for drive letter.
If there is any progress with this problem, please feel free let me know.

  • I have a new Win 7 machine, new FF 3.6.3, old hard drive, now external, can't get bookmarks from it to new installation

I got a new computer, Win 7, 64 bit OS, bought an external drive housing where my old hard drive now exists as an external drive. I downloaded a new copy of Firefox, 3.6.3, and would like to get my bookmarks from the old hard drive into the new one but have not found a way to do so. The organize bookmarks/import thing didn't work. I can SEE all of them on the other drive but can't find a way to import them to my new Firefox bookmarks without doing it one by one and there are a couple hundred. I'd like to be able to get them all and have them merge into identically named folders, only a few of which I've created so far in the new machine.

Ok, let me try to explain step-by-step:
#The bookmarks are '''not''' in HTML file. This is OK. Firefox does not store the bookmarks in HTML format.
#Even if you boot the old Firefox, it will show the new bookmarks. This is also OK. You can't really do much about that.
#Uninstalling and re-installing Firefox will '''not''' solve your problem. Firefox will '''not''' see the bookmarks in the external hard drive. Please '''do not''' try this approach.
Now, to make things as simple as possible, let's try to bring all of your old bookmarks and settings into the new computer.
#Make sure that you have closed Firefox completely. This can be done by selecting '''File''' menu and then clicking on '''Exit'''.
#You said you were able to locate the Profile folder on the '''external hard drive''', right? Just to confirm, the name of this folder is something like xxxxxxxx.default (for example, my Profile folder is named 9qnmvkea.default. Yours will be something similar).
#Double click on this folder to open it.
#Select the '''Edit''' menu and click on '''Select All'''. Select the '''Edit''' menu again and then click on '''Copy'''.
#Now, open Firefox from your new computer and follow the instructions given in this article to locate your new Profile folder: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information#Locate_your_profile_folder Locate your profile folder]. Again, this folder would be named like xxxxxxxx.default
#Once this is done, again close Firefox by selecting '''File''' menu and then clicking on '''Exit'''.
#Double click on your new Profile folder to open it.
#Select the '''Edit''' menu and click on '''Paste'''. Windows will ask you if you want to replace existing files with same name. Select '''replace'''. Wait till all the files have been replaced.
#Open Firefox again from the new computer. Hopefully, you should see your old bookmarks now.

  • Cant print from Win XP and Win 7 machines using Airport Express

I have two airport expresses each hooked to a printer. Both are ini ethernet mode only; wireless is turned off. With our two Macbooks, all works perfectly; it was foolproof to set-up and both macbooks can priunt to either printer at will.
We have a Win 7 laptop; oddly, it will only print to one of the two printers
We have a Win XP desktop, it wont print to either printer.
In boht cases on the windows machines, I can see the airport expresses and I can configure3 them using the utilty. I can install the printers using the Bonjour Printer Wizard. Bonjour itself is running on each machine....I can tell as itunes home sharing works perfectly and I can see it as a "Service".
But when I try to print a document, it just never comes out!
I have Geek Squad coming next week....by nice if I could fix it before they get here!

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the  AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at thisiFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link. If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help: Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule
Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if your printer is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work.

  • My PM 7.0 began crashing about a year ago on my Win 7 machine.

There seemed to be no definable reason, and it was only occasionally, so I wasn't too bothered. But now I can't work for more than 15-20 minutes before it will either freeze, or crash the program completely.
Even after I've just cleaned the Registry, a RegClean report run immediately afterwards showed 42 errors, with the first 2 being:
    Invalid File or Folder  #####  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\.p65\ShellNew\Filename  #####  C:\Windows\ShellNew\PageMaker.p65
    Invalid File or Folder  #####  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\.pm6\ShellNew\Filename  #####  C:\Windows\ShellNew\PageMaker.pm6
Why it references PageMaker.6 & 6.5 I've no idea. Is that a clue? Most of the other errors reported relate to "Speech\Engines\SR\en-US" for some unknown reason.
I have spent many hours running it in all the provided compatibility modes, all to no avail. I have even tried running it on my Win XP Pro machine but it crashed there too.
So I'm wondering if there's an error in the pub itself. It will often balk at some point when converting (currently a 36pp pub) to PDF. I remember seeing a PM menu command to "check publication for layout errors" or some-such, when PM would beep if an error was found. Can't find it now, though.
I see there are many of you in this forum having problems running PM 7 in Win 7 and beyond, so did anyone ever discover a fix?

So I'm here on behalf of a customer. They are running Windows 7 Home edition. They have been using this program on this computer since they bought it in 2012. This was prompted by them being unable to use PM6.5 any longer so when they bought the new computer, they contacted Adobe support and through a series of misinforming emails the customer was able to buy PM7 and then an installation disc was sent to them. From then until this morning they were able to use PM7 without any issue. Yesterday a tech had gone out to clean up her computer because it was so infested the customer could no longer do anything without the computer locking up or flooding itself with ads.
Scouring these forums I've seen, more times than I care to count or recollect, people saying that they've gotten it to work on WIn7 and that it was never built to play Win7 in the first place. That's fine and dandy, but no one is saying how they got it to work. I'd love to know this as the customer seems unwilling to change to InDesgin. While I haven't had the "its a real possibility you will have to change" conversation with them, part of the misinforming email mentioned above was Adobe trying to force her into InDesign and she caught it before payment and switched it to PM7.
I've run this program in every able compatibility version both as user and admin. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software running the install as user and admin multiple times. After the first installation it installed PMv7.0.2, which is the most recent version I believe. Installing the associated software, adobe distiller, doesn't help either. During the installation I get 2 errors: one telling me the unInstaller didn't install so I may not be able to unInstall this product, and another telling me that there was an error creating the registry set. The installer then continues its process to finish and I'm still unable to open it.
I'm toying with the idea of setting up a virtual XP machine holding only this program so the customer can use it whenever she needs to, but if I can get this running another way I'd love to do so.

  • How to move Acrobat 7 Professional from old Win XP machine to new Win 7 machine?

I've been using Acrobat 7 Professional for some years on my old Windows XP computer and recently bought a new Dell WIndows 7 64-bit computer.  Although I no longer have my original installation disk, I did copy all the installation files to my old machine (and copied them to the new one).  When I tried to install the program on my new computer I get the error message "Serial Number Invalid."  The number I used was the 20-digit number that appears when I click "About Acrobat 7.0 Professional" on the old machine's program.  Why won't it work?  What am I doing wrong?  BTW, Acrobat 7 has worked fine for me up until now.

    do not copy/migrate/etc adobe programs.
properly install them using the adobe installation files.

  • Few Win client machine throws up (only port 1521) ORA-03135 Error

    Hi Everyone,
We have been encountering a strange issue with the client --> database connectivity.
    Oracle Database Server 11.2.0.3 (64bits) Single Instance - AIX 6.1 (64 bits)
    Oracle Client 11.2.0.3 (32 bits) - Windows 2008 R2 Standard (64 bits)
Two windows client machines disconnect from the database server while running a script. The connection hangs when the script is being executed with just the cursor on the screen. After a while, it throws up the ORA-03135- connection lost contact error.
The same script works fine from other windows machine perfectly even on VPN and having different versions of oracle clients installed on them too. Have tried following up a number of KB articles. Have tried setting up sql.net timeout parameters on the server as well as client accordingly. Checked firewall settings with network team. Even tried opening up all firewall ports for test purposes but still the issue persists.
Oracle Support suggested a number of troubleshooting steps and one of the step was the following:
".....Try changing listener port instead of common port 1521. Many routers including Juniper handles Oracle default listener port 1521 specially and thus might impose traffic limit."
Quickly we tried changing the listener port and also the firewall guys changed the port to 1522 from existing 1521. As soon as we did this, we were able to run the scripts fine from both the machines clearly indicating a stable connection. We tried reverting back to 1521 and encountered the same issue.
Anyone aware of this peculiar issue? All help will be really appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi Helios,
I have gone through the documents earlier and the respective sql parameters has been set. But again, the problem is ONLY with 2 of our windows client machines and that too when the db listener port is set to default 1521. Our network team confirmed that all the SQL related ALG filtering has been disabled. The Intrusion Protection System (IPS) is also disabled as default between the client - database network VLAN.

  • Has anyone been able to install WLS 6.x on a Win 2K machine with Java?

I'm having a nightmare of a time getting WLS to install. 5.1 runs and installs

Isn't there a 'noinstall' option like the previous product versions?
    I'm running win 2000 sp1 (pre 2) I've tried removing ALL my jdk's, but when I
try to install, I get a flicker of the installation window, then nothing.

    Try this:

set PATH=c:\jdk1.2.2\bin;%PATH% (can use other 1.2 or 1.3 JVM)
    set CLASSPATH=

try to install, I get a flicker of the installation window, then nothing.
