FCP Movie squeezed in quicktime

I've output a 720x486 quicktime movie from an 8 bit SD timeline. when I play the movie in quicktime, it is squeezed from top to bottom, even though it says it is 720x486. If I drag that same quicktime movie back into final cut, the perspective looks perfect.
Why is this? How do I get it to not look squeezed in quicktime? Is this a square pixel vs. rectangle pixel kind of a thing going on???

Yes, it's the non-square pixel issue.
If you are going to play the material from the computer, not video, convert to a 4:3 ratio (square pixel - eg 640x480)

  • Anyone knows a DVD player for TV which can play QuickTime movies /FCP movie

I am trying to find a DVD player for my television which can play a QuickTime or Final Cut Pro movie which is on a DVD. Do you know one ?
    I have a FCP movie (720 x 576 ) transfed to a DVD ( UDF format ).
I have tryed to play the DVD in many DVD plyers, but they all say " unknown file format "

playing them through AppleTV, can do the trick?
yes and no. The AppleTV is a terribly crippled product. Seems to have been launched with only a few of its capabilities enabled and then it sort of got forgotten.
Before investing in an AppleTV box, be sure to read the product reviews from the MAcintosh magazines and especially the PC magazines. You want to get objective information about this weirdly limited box.

I can't open any 60p .mov files in quicktime or FCP5.  Sometimes in QT the audio plays but not the video. Footage was shot on a JVC GY HM150 which is supposed to record in native fcp format.  Any ideas how I can open these files successfully?

Get ClipWrap2 and convert to an editable format for your version of FCP5.
    Probably DVCProHD will work

  • FCP movie vs Quicktime

Just curious what the difference is between exporting as FCP movie vs exporting as QT, for iDVD4, or any other application as they seem to be the same, mostly?

We've found another crucial difference. Might not be relevant to yor situation but here's my sad story:
FCP movies, like those that are created by captured clips, do not carry a file extension. They have an FCP icon instead. Exported QT movies usually carry a .mov extension but not always because you can decide not to include it.
An FCP movie that is uploaded to some servers will not be useable as an FCP movie, it acquires a generic Terminal-style icon. It's easily fixed by using an Applescript to append .mov to all files in a folder but 'tis ever so tedious.
This probably isn't endemic or wed be hearing much more about it, I assume it's our IT system's server geeks playing tricks on us.

  • Importing FCP Movie Causes DVDSP to Freeze

I have captured video from a Canon Mini DV GL2 to FCP. When I export the video using ANY format, DVC Video Pro, using current settings, or changing them, making self contained, recompressing all video or not... nothing matters... DVDSP locks up. The movie icon will turn black after I select the file to import as an asset, and then... the lovely little message "The Application DVD Studio Pro Quit Unexpectedly." This has only happened on the last two movies I've exported from FCP v5. I'm using OSX 10.4.8
I'm using DVDSP version 4. I"ve played these movies in other apps with no problem. I've resaved them with Quicktime.... no matter. No can import.

Well, sadly, I followed your string link, had high hopes. I changed the "Open With" to Quicktime, hid the general info, followed all procedures, to no avail. I can't even open the FCP movie in MOTION! It crashes too! Unfortunately, I can't go back to my previous version of Finder as I've updated my backup as well. Surely someone out there has overcome this problem??? I can't be the only one experiencing this can I be?

  • The size of my exported FCP movie is too big for DVD studio pro

    Hey,
I have been editing for 4-5 years now and have never had a problem with size of a project to put into DVD Studio Pro to burn. However, I just finished a 2 hour project in which exported as a FCP movie it is 23.97 gb in size. When i put this into DVD Studio Pro it makes it 4.8gb in size which just makes it too big for it to burn. I have tried changing the compression to no avail and just now decided to clean up the timeline so everything is on one track with nothing overlapping. (The problem was it was a 2 camera shoot so the first camera i had on the bottom track constant with the second camera on the top track when i needed it but still with the first camera underneath.) Do you think this could be the solution to my problem? If you guys could help me out it would be most appreciated!

some things don't make sense here. please clarify.
Standard DV is roughly 5 minutes per gig, so that means that you have just about 2 hours of video, ok, got that. Now it's the two track thing that gets me.
Are you saying you have 4 hours of footage, the same thing from two cameras, and you're trying to set up a multi-angle DVD?
If it's just that you used two video tracks to edit, then NO, it is not your problem. It's still only 2 hours, the video will be mixed down to one track upon export from FCP to quicktime.
My suggestion is, instead of bringing a quicktime file directly into DVDSP, use compressor. I believe they have a preset in compressor 2 for a standard 120 minute DVD. IF you're project is truly less than 120 minutes, than that should be fine. If not, then you may have to manually make your own setting and lower the bitrate.
    So the workflow is:
    -open sequence in fcp
-file>export>quicktime movie... (you can uncheck "make movie self-contained" if you want it to export faster and you plan on keeping your original capture footage around)
-export your movie to a directory of your choice with a name of your choice.
    -open compressor (in applications)
-drag the quicktime file you created into compressors main window, this will set it up. Now specify the export setting (120 minute HQ all files either 16x9 or 4x3 dep. on project) and specify a location for the files to be created. I strongly suggest that you use the HQ (High quality) settings in compressor. It's much slower to process, but much better quality.
-with a 2 hour movie it should take a really REALLY long time to compress, so I'de say do it over night.
-when compressor is done, you should have 2 or three files. a .m2v file a .aif file, and a .ac3 file. The .aif is your PCM audio, much better quality than the .ac3, which is dolby 2 channel. However, the .ac3 is a much smaller file with a lower bit rate, so if the .aif makes the DVD file size too big, you can switch it out for the .ac3
-Finally, open up your DVDSP project, drag the .m2v, .aif, and .ac3 into DVDSP and use the .m2v for the video track and either the .aif or .ac3 as the audio (as mentioned above)
-the good news is, your DVD media is already rendered, so when you go to build your DVD it will go much, much faster!
By the way, I recommend you go to file>advanced>build do not do a burn and build.
I find it best to build the VIDEO_TS folder on a hard drive and then use a program like toast to create a DVD (using toasts from VIDEO_TS option). This method also allows you to go back into DVDSP, make tweaks, and reuse your VIDEO_TS folder, not having to rebuild the whole thing each time.
Remember, 120 minutes on a single layer DVD is going to render fairly low quality no matter what.
If you have a newer mac and a dual layer drive, you may want to cough up a few bucks and get a dual layer DVD-R, then you have over 8 gigs of space to work with, perfect for HQ 2 hour footage.

  • 6gb fcp movie into 2 gb qt

    hello out there
    i completed a 31 minute fcp movie
    frame size 720 x 480
    audio:48khz 16 bit
    quicktime compression settings =
    compressor : ntsc - ccir 601 /DV
    compression type: dv/dvcpro ntsc
    scan mode: interlaced
    aspect ratio: 4:3
i exported using qt [no converstion]
resulting file is 6.64 GB -
How would i get it down to 2GB to send a digital preview movie file to festivals either via
    "withoutabox" or "shortfilmdepot"
whose size limits are 2GB. i would like to use up all the size for best  possible quality result.
this is the first  time i have attempted to use the compressor and i'm not sure at all how to get the best quality
    within size limit.
could i also just use the quicktime conversion to get a highquality 2gb movie from the 6.64 master?
if so would i do that within fcp
also: should i de-interlace?  in fcp render settings? and/or the compressor settings
and also what about the noise reduction filter in the compressor settings? the
ambient sound is quite present  in the movie but also composed music and i was wondering wnat the
noise reduction filter does to quality of music.
well any advice would be greatly appreciated,
    thanks!
    celia

Use these settings for a start.
    File>Export>Using QuickTime Conversion.
In the window that opens click the Options button and in the new window (called Movie Settings) click the Settings button.
    The window below will open.
    Set everything like that.
If you wish you can deselect "Frame Reordering" and if you choose "Faster Encode" it will encode in about half the time with little or no loss of quality.
Click OK and you will be returned to the Movie Settings window.
Click the Size button and then from the Dimensions menu button select Custom and insert the frame size you want.
Click OK and you will be returned to the Movie Setting window.
In the Sound section ensure that AAC has been selected.
Click OK and then Save the sequence to a suitable place.

  • Burning a FCP movie file

Hi, this is probably a basic question but i am very new to fcp as usually use imovie&dvd!
I have a very short sequence which i exported to QT and is now a fcp movie file not avi which seemed like an inferior quality file.
Am having huge difficulty burning this to dvd - have tried twice in toast basic and although the movie plays and sounds perfect in the preview, when the disc mounts and plays the image is perfect but the audio is only a piercing squeal.
Tried to burn through the finder but the disc wouldn't verify and it gave me an error code.
To avoid too many coasters i was wondering if anyone has any idea what I'm doing wrong to get this distorted audio once burned?
    big thanks in advance

Without a doubt, DVDSP will give you a much better product.
But, if you simply need a quick burn to DVD, you can also use iDVD.
Render your movie and do an audio mixdown in FCP, then... Export Quicktime Movie / current settings / self-contained (or not, if you'll be burning from the same system) / don't recompress all frames.
Once the file is exported, just open iDVD and drag the exported movie file into the interface. There's a setting to make it 'first play', but I don't remember where.
    Burn away.
You can also utilize the other features of iDVD...slideshows, themes, etc.

I'm running snow leopard. The try to open any .mov file in Quicktime, and I get an error message that says, "The document xyz.mov could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that Quicktime player understands. I'm a recent upgrade to Snow Leopard.
    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • HT3775 I am trying to open a .mov file in "Quicktime" and it keeps saying it doesn't support the file.

I have made a movie in "Final Cut Pro X" saved it as a .mov file and "QuickTime" won't open it. It keeps saying that it doesn't recognize the file. Ironically there is another .mov file right next to it on the flash drive that opens just fine. I do notice that the one it does open looks like a little black box with a 'play' arrow button in it when I run the curser over it, but the one it doesn't open has a 'Quicktime' 'Q' in it.
I try to eject the flash drive and it says "Final Cut Pro X" is still using it, then it shows me a window that shows 6% progress. I am thinking maybe the movie is still loading. I really don't know.

    Try VLC.

  • How do I export FCP movie to a WMV format (Windows Media Player friendly)?

I am puzzled. How can I export FCP movie to a WMV format or Windows Media Player friendly?
    Thanks in advance.

You need a third party app to do this... AVI is the only format that you can export from FCP that's windows media friendly... WMF's can be exported with flip4mac... http://www.flip4mac.com Probably the best of the apps...

  • Try to open mov file with quicktime, says can't open pdf files.

    Hi to everyone,
Suddenly I try to open a mov, any mov file, with quicktime 10.4 and some times opens the finder and nothing more, some times says that it cannot open one pdf document ( a document I actually have but never try to open with QT). some times QT says it canot open some png or jpg file.
But I double click mov files. And the incoherence is permanent, I mean that for the same movie file says it can't open the same pdf file, and in other file the same png, or the same jpg.. it depends on the mov file I try to open.  Like if somewhere, somme kind of cache, adresse or reference is wrong.
this is the text of one of those messages when I double click a mov file:
"The document “phoenixRoomfillerB_v001_0104.jpg” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “JPEG image” format."
And if I try again and again, at some point QT open only the finder window.
The weird thing is that on the finder window i can see the preview and play the preview. and the same mov files play well with VLC. And if I copy the mov file to my desktop it plays well unless QT start to open only the finder window, if that happens it does not work anymore with any file.
The files are on an external drive with 3 partitions.
And I make all the possible cleaning that I can:
I am the administrator of the imac and I am the only one to use it.
I am the owner of the volume
I use disk utility to check and everything is ok
I use onyx to clean as much as possible, cache, boot, volume structure, smart status, home folder permissions, kernel, extensions, QT components, etc. and everything works fine.
    Imac 27 inch late 2012.
    Intel 3.4 GHz  i7
    32 Gb Ram
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
    thanx.

Try QT v7.x which is located inside your Utility folder.

  • Can't open .mov files in quicktime anymore

I can't think of any system changes that I've made recently but a few days ago I was able to open .mov files with quicktime and now I can't. I get the following error when I try to open one. Error -1856: an unknown error occurred (filename.mov) I've uninstalled quicktime, rebooted and reinstalled with no luck. I've searched these forums and googled the error number but can't find anything. Does anyone know what might be going on? Thanks.

Actually, I can't open anything in quicktime anymore. I've tried opening avis, mov, mp4 and m4a files... all give the same error message and number. I've reinstalled both qt and itunes but no luck.

  • Hide the title bar of a movie window like QuickTime X

Love the feature of QuickTime X of not showing the title bar/the control bar of a movie window (still waiting for Pro version, though. Is it coming out at all?)
I'm wondering if anyone has figured out a way/tweak to hide the title bar of a iTunes movie window like QuickTime X.
    Thanks.

What child window are you referring to? Do you mean a browser window opened with web.show_document?
If so, you can use javascript to hide browser toolbars and so on. Search the forum for some javascript examples where windows are opened with toolbar=no.
