Finder crash in yosemite - no icons on desktop, no access to the application at all
Hi, I'm experiencing problems with Finder after updating to yosemite. I can't acces the finder application at all and there are no icons showing on the desktop either. Here are the crash messages from terminal when trying to open/relaunch finder:

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup. Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting.

MitchI had the same problem and I found the fix, thanks to Francine on your post:
I went into "/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items" and into "/Library/Contextual Menu Items". I archived the contents of each, dropped the archives onto the desktop (in case I wanted them again) and trashed the contents of those 2 folders. Restarted and everything worked great getting the contextual menus up again on Finder items using Control-Click. I then replaced the appropriate archive into the "/Library/Contextual Menu Items", unarchived it (hoping to find the culprit item) and trashed the archive, restarted and again all worked fine again. I then repeated the process with the "/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items" folder and again restarted and again everything worked fine! So found no culprits and the contextual menus work as they always did before the problem.

My phone crashed and has an icon showing a usb cable and the itunes emblem. when I connect to itunes it does not recognize my phone and treats it as just iphone. when I try to restore about 9 to 10 minutes into the restore the phone turns off and then on and then loses the connection with itunes and at the end of the download it just asks me to restore it again.
Be prepared to lose everything on your iPhone but it should be backed up in iTunes so you can restore from your backup.

Why even unchecked my crash reports are sent? I have to manually edit the 'application.ini' file at every updates! This is unacceptable for the user's choice!

My iPod touch was recently stolen and I have been trying to find it on iCloud but sadly it has not connected to the internet at all so I have not been able to track it.What should I do?
- If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
- You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
- If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
- Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
- There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it.
- Apple will do nothing without a court order

Does anyone have a similar problem and know how to solve it?1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Finder crashes and restarts when Adobe PDF documents are accessed.
Recently I've been having problems with my Finder crashing (window closes and the dot under the Finder icon in the Dock goes out) and restarting (dot under the icon in the Dock comes back on). The problem occurs when I select an Adobe PDF document in the Finder. I use column view. If I click once on a document to see the Preview information in the next column, or if I double click to open the document, the crash and restart occurs. However, it doesn't happen for all Adobe PDF documents. If the icon next to the document name in the Finder shows the first page of the document, the problem does no occur. But if the document icon remains the Adobe logo, the problem occurs.
I'm running Os X 10.5.5 on one of the early iMacs. Other than regular Apple updates, the only software change I've made recently is to install Adobe Flash Player.Here's an update.
The problem seems to be confined to the Finder when Column view is selected. When List or Icon view is selected there is no crash and restart. When Cover Flow is selected the Finder crashes and restarts, but the pattern seems a bit odd. It crashes when some folders or subfolders are selected, but not others.
In Column view the problem occurs for some Adobe PDF documents where the document icon is the first page. It occurs for all PDF documents where the icon is the Adobe logo. -
How to remove Application icon from system tray on uninstalling the application

Could you pls help me? i reinstalled my computer and the Safari Icon has a ? mark on it in the dock, I pulled it out and it disappeared, I checked for this icon in the application folder but couldnt find it there. I think that your Mac detects your hard disk, but the problem is that your new hard disk doesn't contain any operating system, so your Mac doesn't find any bootable partition and you see a question mark.
If your Mac came with DVDs, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, just install Mac OS X. If the hard disk isn't prepared to install Mac OS X, you will have to erase it using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html -
I need to reinstall my apps but the desktop CC manager says the apps are all still installed
I have been dealing with some problems with my computer following a power failure. I have had the hard drive replaced and the OS reinstalled by a technician. I reinstalled my Adobe apps a few days ago but I am still having some issues. The technician has suggested that I trash all my adobe files and download and re-install. The desktop CC manager still show that all the apps are still installed and won't let me download again. I downloaded the adobe app cleaner and ran that but the CC desktop manager still shows the apps listed as installed. Could you please advise me on the best way to solve this problem? Thank you.

Instead of moving the apps to the trash you should properly uninstall them.
To uninstall the application in Mac
Finder ---> Applications ---> Utilities --->Adobe Installers --->Uninstall all the releant Adobe apps.
Launch Creative cloud desktop ---> sign out ( from preferences) --> sign back in
It will start showing you the option to install those apps.

I downloaded the most recent version of Firefox as requested. No Firefox icon appears
to drag into the Applications folder. I tried twice with no luck. The old version remains.
I am on a new Mac. I will, when this works, be updating my older Mac as well.The thing in your download folder is a "disk image." You have to double-click it and it will place a white "disk" on your desktop. It should also open a window with a Firefox icon and your applications folder. Parallels Desktop does not run - the application parallels desktop quit
Keep getting the popup error "The application Parallels Desktop quit unexpectedly" Ignore report or relaunch. I have reinstalled parallels numerous times to no avail. I have reported this issue numerous times to Mac over the last couple months and nothing yet.
Is the application conflicting with something or does it just not work. I have also went to the parallels website and got the latest version.
Any help or guidance greatly appreciated.I had the same frustrating problem. I found the answer here and it worked perfectly!
First I ran the uninstaller from my original Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac cd and got rid of the application completely.

As per directions, I repaired the disk permissions.
Then as per the directions, I downloaded the build 5608 which is a Parallels Desktop 5608 application installer.
Lastly, you should know that I did NOT follow the directions for the terminal section. I was not comfortable messing around in there. I skipped it, ran the Parallels Desktop 5608 installer and I was up and running very quickly. Even though I skipped the terminal step, it works perfectly. I think it's because the uninstaller had already deleted the files that were referred to in the terminal directions.

G4 crashed and now no icons on desktop
Sorry if this problem has been posted before, I searched and didnt discover it....
So my office (video production company) has a Final Cut Pro system with a G4, dual 1Ghz, 1GB RAM. Normal issues from time to time, nothing major. We have a few firewire drives hooked up to it, as well as a RAID (8 drives, 400GB total, MaxArray).
I was editing today, rendering...and the system froze. No biggie its done it before. I tried to restart, and when it booted back up, it seemed to start fine, desktop wallpaper came up, except nothing else did! All i can see is the wallpaper and then the clock and volume controls in the upper right hand corner.
I did a hard shut down, restarted and the same thing. Everything Ive tried has the same results. Zapped the PRAM/NVRAM, started it in SafeMode...
Im at a loss...HELP!!!!

G4 Mac OS X (10.2.x) Dual 1Ghz, 1 Gb RAMI can actually access the Disk Utility from the dock ( i created alias a long time ago) and I have checked the disks, repaired permissions, etc.
Ive also deleted the finder preferences file thru single user.
The computer starts up fine, no error messages, just no finder.
Today, I created a new account and logged in with it, and the same thing happened--dock shows up, can access Disk Utility, System Preferences (and even Safari opens up) but no other programs will.
At the very least I need access to some files on the desktop so i can figure out a way to get them off the machine in case I need to do a reinstall. Anyone know of a way to access files without finder? -

I'm trying to make a photo book using iPhoto 09. I get an error message stating no themes are available. I've read online to look in my application support folder but there is not listing for iPhoto there at all. I don't know where to go from here. I've tried reinstalling the software.
