G-5/Tiger/IndesignCS/HP issue

I have an Apple G-5/2.0 Ghz with 1 GB ram. Purchased in November 2005.
Since using my new system (10.4.5), I no longer have the functionality of several features that come with the HP 4250N Laserjet printer I own.
The main feature that no longer works is the "Ram Disk" on the printer.
When this feature is "on" or on "Auto", the printer will only print out one page from the file I sent to be printed. After the initial page is printed, it prints out this error message:
Error: Unable to store job at printer
Reason: Insufficient disk space for this job
Solution: Delete some files from the disk before resending this job.
However there are no other jobs stored, and the file is only 1MB large.
I really need this feature, because without it, the printer doesn't count out my pages as I print. (printing page 1 of 200), etc., or collate files sent to it.
I have spoken with HP tech support and they were not able to resolve this issue I have. They updated my firmware and tried several other possible solutions, to no avail.
I have owned the printer for almost 9 months. I just recently switched over to a G-5 running 10.4.5. When I used the printer with my G-4 (10.3.9 Panther system) I had no problems at all.
Apparently this a G-5 or Tiger (10.4.5) system issue, not sure which, But both techs at HP said it was also an IndesignCS/Apple/HP combination issue.
Anybody else have a similiar problem??
Also I have an ethernet connection using bonjour networking.

I forgot one issue, everything worked fine also on the G-5 until I update to 10.4.4. Before, with the initial software that came with Tiger(10.4.3), everything worked fine.

Tiger Mail - Serious issues?

Hi all,
I have just recently emigrated to Tiger from Panther and immediately found some weird issues with Mail 2. Reading the other posts in this forum led me think there might be something fundamentally erratic with the app itself.
I use email several hours per day at work, and if I loose my emails, I basically loose evertyhing and can start looking for another job.
Here's what I've got:
1) Frequently (several times a day) I loose sight of ALL emails in the Mail viewer window in ALL mailboxes. It seems I have no emails of whatsoever. However, I might get a text on the top of the mailbox viewer saying, like: "0 messages, 10 unread". When I relaunch the app, all messages are back again. Knock on wood.
2) When deleting messages from local mailboxes, they disappear instantly. They do not end up in the Trash - On My Mac mailbox, as I guess they should. I've read other people having erratic behaviour on deleting messages or emptying the Trash (messages randomly disappearing, etc). Is this a variation on the same theme?
3) Mail has stopped reading some of my email account passwords from the Keychain, but prompts instead me to write (and remember!) them everytime I launch the app.
4) When upgrading from Panther to Tiger and launching the Mail for the first time, the app is supposed to import all the old mailboxes and the messages residing in them, right? Well, this just didn't happen. I got two POP accounts and two local mailboxes, which had most, if not all, of their messages lost after the upgrade. All the IMAP accounts, however, were ok.
I still have the previous Panther system as a back up clone on a FW HD. I duplicated the original mailboxes on the Panther disk and re-imported them using the "Import Mailboxes" command in Mail. To my suprise the messages were still not imported. I got an inbox of 2000+ emails, for example, and I got about 100 of them imported. I started to become hysterical at this point. The issue was finally solved by importing the mailboxes by selecting the "Other" box in the import window as a source of data, instead of "Mail", and voila, all thousands of messages were appropriately rescued.
(Btw, luckily I had duplicated the original mailboxes before starting to import, as my first import attempts had deleted / emptied the source mailboxes, even though the contents were not appropriately imported. If I had been trying to import directly from the original mailboxes on the Panther clone (not from the duplicates), I would have lost my emails for good.)
I've got several mailboxes (over 10 accounts + local archive boxes), and as mentioned, the email app is the most important daily tool for me, notwhitstanding all that creativity that is going on here with all the other fancier apps.
I wonder if anyone could give a helping hand? Any suggestions how to repair Mail 2? Or if Mail is beyond repair, which other email app would be suitable for heavy pro use?
I'd hate to start using Entourage or the like, but this scary and disappointing experience with Mail 2 has made be consider going non-Apple. Regrettably so.

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:

In particular, you may want to take a look at the following article (also referenced in that thread) to learn what you might have done before migrating to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problems to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON'T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Although it seems you've successfully imported your old mail, it looks like you've done that without fixing whatever was amiss in your Mail folder as a result of the failed conversion, and I bet it's all a mess now.
The following procedure is an example of how to fix conversion problems in the Inbox of a POP account. Similar procedures can be used to fix conversion problems in other mailboxes:
1. Quit Mail.
2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn't need to have an .mbox extension.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
5. Move the mbox file out of INBOX.mbox and into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. This file contains all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger (maybe even some messages that had been deleted).
6. Move any strangely-named Messages-XXXXXX folder to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or a re-indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn't work as expected. If you've been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox file only. Now, proceed as follows:
8. Open Mail.
9. The account's Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that's not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that's on the Desktop. Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move to the account's Inbox the messages that Mail failed to convert properly, and delete those that did get through and, hence, are duplicates now.

If all is well and you're not missing anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.

Tiger HD mounting issue

Have a PPC 933 with an issue mounting its main hard drive. I was able to boot it in OS 9 mode, so I went to renstall OSX Tiger. The install (archive and migrate mode) failed. The drive will no longr appear on the desktop.
Disk first aid tries to rebuild the catalog b-trieve, but fails.
Any thought on getting this device to be visible again?

Do you mean the First Aid tab of OS X's Disk Utility or the OS 9 Disk First Aid program? The latter is not entirely compatible with a drive to be used with Tiger.
If you haven't tried Disk Utility, boot your Mac from the OS X installer disk & instead of doing the install, select Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu & run its "Repair Disk" step.

Tiger Woods 08 issues

I can not get my Tiger Woods 08 to play... i have been researching the issues with the graphics cards and found NO solution... i have a MacPro 2.66MHz with 2GB of RAM with a X1900XT (512MB VRAM) and the game will not start up... i get a splash screen with a notice my video graphics card is not supported... but my system exceeds the minimum requirement... anyone else have any luck with a MacPro (Dual-Core Intel Xeon)?
I already did the patch also... and NO help from EA Sports or Apple ("contact vendor")... the forum there is also upset at no answers from EA...

unfortunalty at this time i would have to say yes. The support from EA is just not there for this game. The biggest mistake is that this is only encoded for the mac, not a new build. So i think that is why there are so many problems happening right now with EA mac titles

ive just started using the mail client that accompanies OS X Tiger. ive been
trying to format my signature. the logo that i include doesnt seem to be
showing up when the email is received at the other end. it shows up just fine
as i compose the message. any thoughts?

Panther and Tiger and other issues

deep breath...this is going to be long and detailed, but I am hoping someone here can help me since AppleCare has not been able to figure it out and I am at a loss now. I have been in the iPhoto forum but apparently the problem is much larger than one app.
We have a iBookG4, purchased from a Mac Store in Sept. 2004. It has been to AppleCare 4 times for various problems and 2 hard drive crashes that we have had to do reinstalls ourselves here at home, the most recent repair this past week. When we got it back Wednesday, it only had Panther loaded--we had been running Tiger for over a year--frustrating, but OK, as I had the orginal Tiger disk so I re-installed it. Proceeded to hook up our external and began loading all the pics and music back on the laptop. It would not open our photos, saying we needed to use the newer version of iPhoto. We had been using iPhoto 5.0.4 since March 06. As I looked further Garage Band and iDVD were also missing completely, which we previously had, and I am sure there are others, I just noticed these two since I use them the most.
So I start all over: reinstall Panther, do the Software Updates, then reinstall Tiger, do the Software Updates, twice in the past two days. I also downwload the iPhoto updates from the Apple site, but they do not recognize the iPhoto 4 as valid to update from. I called AppleCare today and after several tries at various things, he asks me to do exactly as I have done twice already. I humor him and do it, of course it doesn't work.
When Tiger is loaded, I am still missing GarageBand, iDVD, iWork and the iCal icon is there but whe I open it is is not recognized. We had all of these apps working fine before it was sent in for service last week.
Now the questions:
1. There are 2 Software Install and Restore disks that came with our laptop, but it never asks for the second disk to be loaded--it only loads one disk. When I put in the second disk, it only has the Using this disk.pdf in several languages on it. Shouldn't it ask for the 2nd disk and is that probably where the Garage Band and iDVD are?
2. Why would the install disks not reload all the applications as we had them orginally, or is this related to Question #1 and there is something wrong with those disks?
2. I saved our entire hard drive to the external--did that not include the applications, therefore our iPhoto 5 is lost?
4. Is there any recourse with AppleCare, in that I know to save my files but would expect they would return it with at least the same operating system as when I sent it in?

Often there are disks with software to be installed after OSX is installed. You don't use these disks during the install process, but after you boot OSX. Have you read the "Using this disk.pdf" file? If Garage Band and iDVD are on that disk they would be the versions shipped with the computer, not the most recent versions.

Some systems were shipped with two sets of disks, a restore set that restores everything that was shipped on the computer's hard drive, and an install set for just OSX. The OSX disk would be used for Disk Utility and password resetting.

It depends on how you did the save.

If they had to replace the hard drive, installing the operating system that was shipped with the computer is not unreasonable. Installing the latest version could cause problems for some customers with older software, and not all customers have paid for later versions

There are no free or automatic updates to newer versions of iLife. If your computer came with iLife 4 you have to buy iLife 6.

Tiger - Mail Attachment Issues -

I am sitting next to a friend, he is running a Macbook with Tiger installed on it. In the Apple mail application he is having problems with attachments.
If you send one of any file to him PDF, DOC, TXT... The file will open just fine.
If you send multiple files of any kind ONLY the first file will open up. The others report;
Error couldnt open file
By that I mean, Send 5 PDF files, only the first of the 5 files attached is viewable the remainder do not work. Error code above.
This has been going on for over a YEAR...
I have not gone into settings yet but I am pretty certain it is an AOL email addy.

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

Tiger Server firewall issues - forwarding protocol 47 (GRE) for VPN access

Hi everybody,
I'm trying to allow VPN access to my Mac Pro running 10.4.10 Server. I've allowed the TCP and UDP ports, but the sticking point is this: the client tries to connect but I get a bunch of these in the firewall log:
Deny P:47 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(address initiating VPN) 10.0.100.222(MacPro local address) in via en0
After doing some research I figured I needed to allow protocol 47 (GRE) and so tried to add a rule via the "Advanced" tab for firewalls in server manager. I click the + button, select allow, leave the other field, select GRE, and then select from:any and to:any and the in dropdown. When I try to save and activate the rule, however, it complains that there is an error and that all subsequent rules are skipped. I've tried all the possible variations (within my parameters, of course) but it won't work.
Manually inspecting the /etc/ipfw file shows the rule added but without a specification for the GRE or protocol 47 part. i.e.:
add 1050 allow from any to any in
(This looks a little like a server manager bug to me, but I digress)
So I tried manually editing the file in /etc/ipfilter but no joy.
Being somewhat new to OSX I am getting flustered. Am I completely misunderstanding something here? While a search on "VPN GRE firewall" turns up about million hits, none seem applicable to my situation. Thanks in advance.

Try using the "Services" tab, selecting "any" (for example) and configuring the rule there.
The "Advanced" section will allow you to add rules that don't already exist, but there is already a rule for GRE so that might, possibly have something to do with the error you're getting.

Upgrade to Tiger issue

Trying to upgrade to Tiger from Panther, with the Apple Retail DVD Backup DVD-R Install DVD. I have already upgraded my G4 Powerbook from this DVD, which now runs Tiger with no issues. When I insert the DVD into the G5, then mount the install stuff to the desktop, then click on the install icon, then go through the process, the computer then restarts and shows the progress wheel spinning for about five to seven minutes, then shuts the system off. I don't want to loose what exists on the computer, so I can't erase and clean install. Are there any other options to installing from this DVD??

Hi! First off I surely wouldn't be trying ANY disk that didn't have its data backed up as you're just asking for trouble and if the data is important to you then it's Russian Roulette. You mentioned in the name of the disc the word "backup"? That wouldn't be a part of an install disc. Installing on more than one computer unless you're using the family pack would be a violation of the licensing agreement. Tom

Encoding issue for file manager

I am using the ditto command to duplicate a file. This file has unicode filename and as per http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1173.html I am first normalizing the name to kCFStringNormalizationFormD and then converting it to utf-8 before calling ditto on it. This all works smoothly but when I try to get the FSRef using the original unicode name I get fnfErr. Dosn't the API CFURLGetFSRef convert the string to kCFStringNormalizationFormD? Or is there any alternate for ditto on Tiger.

no encoding issues if i use xml (xlf or xliff) bundle as xml supports utf-8 encoding.

Disk Migration from Tiger-based iMac to Leopard MacBook

A friend just bought a new MacBook (with Leopard). She wants to do a disk migration from her G5 iMac (running Tiger). Any issues I should know about when doing this? Or should I upgrade the iMac to Leopard before doing the disk migration?

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC
System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies
Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries

In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:

Tiger Installation Discs

I'm not sure if this is considered the proper place to put this thread, but it seemed like the most logical location.
I have a MacBook Pro that I bought nearly a month ago now, and it's been working beautifully. I recently got a program, and in the installation guide, it said to intall X11 to be able to put the software on my computer, saying that it was on the installation discs for OSX Tiger. The issue is, when I took out the OSX installation discs, it turns out that I have tow copies of Disc 2, as opposed to a copy of the first disc and one of the second. Is there any way It'd be possible to be sent a copy of the first installer disc? Thanks in advance for any help.

Alright, that helps, but I searched for a phone number and it didn't turn up any results, and looking through the booklets that came with my laptop didn't grant any enlightenment either. Is there something I'm missing?

MacBook downgrade from Leopard to Tiger.

I purchased a MacBook this month with Leopard installed. Leopard was causing some problems so I cloned it from another MacBook running Tiger 10.4.11. Since then the MacBook freezes when it sleeps. I have to press the power button to restart. When it does sleep only the hard drive sleeps the display remains lit.iMovie askd for aquartz Extrems and tells me I do not have a proper graphics card. It works fine in Leopard. There is only one display resolution - 1280 x 800. Should the MacBook be able to run properly in Tiger. Any suggestions will be well appreciated.

Having been with the Mac since late System 6, I've found that I've had to upgrade a couple programs with each OS version and had to update quite a few more - particularly hard hit are scanner and printer drivers and utilities that operate(d) at a low level. Pre-OS X, extensions tended to require upgrades when the OS version changed. I've not seen all that big a difference since the switch to OS X.
The switch to Intel has entered into the mix with a large number of companies making Intel native applications available only through upgrades which probably makes it feel that recently we've been forced to upgrade more software. And Apple has made some big changes to printer technology which broke quite a few printer drivers. As to iLife - I started this year at work running G4 iMacs at my desktop. The iLife version was whatever shipped with Jaguar (except for iTunes) but I was running TIger with no issues. And while I'm running Leopard on my MacBook I still haven't installed the new iLife on it - just haven't gotten around to it. iMovie and iPhoto are just fine - never use iDVD so I can't speak to that.

Annoying bug in finder....how is possible that this thing was not noticed?

I can understand that is not possible to see all the bugs, but this is kinda bothering me, because is not exactly a bug that require a lot of efforts at all....here we go, maybe you know about it so iw ould love to know when it will be fixed.
format an USB disk as "apple partition map" (not GUID or boot), now copy a lot of stuff on it (20-30-50 Gb, doesn't matter once that you have more than 5 Gb and you are dealing with a lot of files or packages, and you will see that everything goes fine.
Now copy FROM the USB drive to anywhere else... now start to cry, because you will see messages from finder, saying that an error has occurred and the file is unreadable (-36); then the bar of the copy window stay stuck on the screen and you need to restart finder to make it work again.
a workaround is to copy small quantity of data...but if you deal, like me, with big data moving and stuff like that you wikll understand that is not possible to loose hours to copy stuff one by one, instead of select the entire folder and wait that it will copy.
It works from USB to USB (apple partition map), same from computer to USB (apm) but not on the other direction, so can't be the drive, and i've tried with another USB drive formatted with GUID and it works fine in both directions, while when you format it in APM it won't work form USB to computer (or any other device).
I've updated to the latest 10.5.1, is still doing it.... hoping that 10.5.2 will fix the issue, and please don't tell me to move 2 Tb of data somewhere else because i need to format my disks as GUID and not as APM would be too much to take LOL
BTW, every computer that is sold after Oct receive free leopard even if it does not came with it.... now i wonder if you do the same with the computer bought in september, since i spent money for a mac pro that came with tiger... would be really nice since you put on it all the latest software (ilife 08 and iwork 08) to have also Leopard, since is a business machine that cost 3k and not a toy like a pc that cost 500 dollars

I've upgraded from Tig to Leo; could be possible that this is the problem, but even in this case i would expect that an upgrade, if offered as option, should be able to let the machine to work without flaws like this one...honestly is not acceptable at all, especially from your company.
And please: add the discussion link on the Leopard page in the support section...it took me 20 minutes to find a way to go in the discussion forum (had no idea if there is one, since is not mentioned on the Leopard support page), and is even harder to find a link to post a bug or to send a message to the dev team about issues like that.

BTW i am glad that i was able to test-drive Leopard....now i know that i can stick with Tiger until the issues are resolved
At the moment the only way that i have to copy files is using the console instead of finder:
ditto -V -rsrc [source] [destination]
with this command you can copy entirely the files (works differently from cp and is specific for mac, since is a dev tool from apple included in any MAc OSX); so if you have issue like mine you can use this command in terminal and you will be able to copy stuff that won't copy using finder.
BTW now i know that there is a direct url at discussions.apple.com; before i was simply going in the specific software/hardware section and clicking on the link "visit the discussions here", while on Leopard page (and also on other pages, like imovie or itunes), there is no link to the discussions, so if you are not so smart you are basically not able to find the discussion forum site

In Praise of the Quicksilver 2001 - 867 MHz

Yes, I have newer machines but this one has been working very, very well for over six years and I decided that I was not going to let it go and not give it the Leopard treatment. I find it amazing how well it is working with all the current system updates, a process that would cripple any older PC. I was a little concerned to find that now this machine is at the bottom of the Leopard food chain, but I did a backup on an external if I had to find my way back to Tiger.
Over the course of time I made some changes. I swapped out the 32 MB ATI Graphics card for a 128 MB model three years ago (Core Image as software though); I swapped out the 60 GB hard drive with a 120 MB model (largest this machine can take); and I added a PCI (SATA) card that allowed me to install a 250 MB internal as well. I also added an Airport (not extreme) Card to connect to the local network. The machine was built with 1.12 GB of RAM.
The installation seemed to go well, about an hour or so overall (I believe this machine has a 4x DVD read). Of course I had the issue with the Login based on 10.1 or earlier and found this right after my login after the installation. I had to do a new keychain, but (although a little inconvenient) it was fairly easy to do.
The first thing I noticed is that the icons for the PCI card connected drives had changed. Before they looked like the main hard drive, now they are orange and are similar to the FireWire attached drives. Everything seems faster than Tiger, and that is quite impressive on an over six year old machine. Safari is snappier than ever. Mail is fast as well. I don't miss the Spotlight delay while typing at all. Quick Look and the additions to viewing files in the Finder work fine and are very useful.
My menu bar is not transparent (not enough GPU power?), so for some detractors this may be a good thing, but it doesn't detract from the use at all. I'm a left-side dock person and I liked the original design that looked like when it was on the bottom, but the current configuration is OK and the lights for active programs are very easy to see. It seems to be using up more RAM than previously, but I'll have to keep watching that and see if it's overall or just certain things.
Overall my rating of this effort is a big success, and I'm sure I'd find it harder and harder to live without Leopard each day if I did not upgrade this machine. I'm not expecting this machine to act like a top of the line model, but with it's new spots, this mature machine has a lot of life left in it!
Some things I've tried so far (not in great detail, just briefly):
Photoshop CS seems to work.
Filemaker 8.5 seems to work.
Rise of Nations seems to work (maybe a tad slower in some respects, but barely noticeable)
Word seemed to work, although it seemed a bit cranky when initially highlighting text and moving windows.
Still bonding with Stacks, seems useful but requires some mindset adjustment, but it is faster than having the Application Folder in the Dock and holding it down for a menu of the contents. It would be nicer if you just saw a folder though and not the first application icon in the dock.
Spaces are definitely Cool!
Preview (4.0) has an odd crash after adjusting colors and trying to save
Disk Utility (11.0) takes a while to repair permissions and only give the rotating status bar while doing so.
So here are some thoughts from the bottom edge of the Leopard territory -- and they are good! And I still have a lot of testing to do yet.

Well, it's been a month with Leopard and I like it very much, but on this machine I not quite "sold" as of yet. I'm hoping future updates round off the rough edges and put the past spark into all aspects of the machine.
I really like Spaces, CoverFlow and QuickLook.
I really don't like the Preview Crash, Disk Utility Speed and Indication, Hunger for RAM, and the "Little Stall".
The Preview crash still happens when adjusting and trying to save, but this is happening among a large number of different machines so it may be with the GPU and Leopard coding.
Disk Utility still takes longer than Tiger in repairing permissions and the graphical indicator of the task is still not fully corrected yet.
RAM seems to be more of an issue than it ever was with Tiger. I've got 1.125 GB well within the requirement, but at times it seems to get taken up more frequently than under Tiger. While running Tiger I never had to check what was using what RAM with Activity Monitor. It seems that more stays active with Leopard as with Tiger the active was always somewhere between 25% to 40% of RAM, and the inactive was at least that much or more, but active would slim down and inactive (less yellow than blue - on Activity Monitor standard colors) would increase, but never any slowdowns with this scheme. With the same amount of applications running in Leopard, the yellow (active) will work it's way up to half with very little blue (inactive). Over time if you leave the machine on and sleep more RAM will kept getting taken up. From my observations it seems to be Safari, which starts out at about 50-80 MB for five tabs, but overtime and surfing it will balloon up to over 300 MB and it makes more sense to quit and restart Safari to get back more RAM. I thought it might be related to Spaces, but I turned it off and the RAM usage was the same. I always expected Leopard to use more of the RAM, but I think there must be some optimizations that can be done to make better use of what is available and to curtail Safari's thirst for memory. Make no mistake, Safari is a great browser; and is my number one choice.
The "Little Stall" (using a Seinfeld-esque slant at naming) is also a result of Leopard I'd like to see the last of. While running the new screen savers "Shell" or "Arabesque" or using any of the iTunes Visualizer (including the original), the effect will run for about three seconds then they're be a "little stall" of about half of a second and it will continue for three seconds and on. It almost seems like there is some disk usage or caching involved and seems odd as I have 128 MB of Video RAM (ATI Radeon 9000 Pro). Could it be that even with 128 MB that Core Image is being done as software and not hardware is causing the the "Little Stall"? I find that hard to believe that this is how the effects are supposed to work on a machine with a non-programable GPU, since there are a number of machines that are well within Leopards requirements that have non-programable GPU's. How many iBooks and other machines are out there with 32 MB GPU's of the same type? I'm hoping that future updates will bring us updated ATI drivers that allow Leopard to take advantage of the same things Tiger could without issue.
All that said, I have Tiger on a backup drive with a complete backup of the drive when I did the upgrade, and I booted up in it the other day to update my Mail if I decide to take this machine back to Tiger and concede on Leopard. As I was working in Tiger, it was as good as I remembered, but in the end I was really missing some of the Leopard features. So I'm keeping Leopard (updating Tiger mail as a fail safe) and hoping future updates will take the Leopard experience on the Quicksilver 2001 - 867 MHz to where it needs to be.
So in the end, I'm a bit torn between what I had, what I have, and keeping hope for what I will get in the end. I'm a few tweaks away from true happiness, but the wait is excruciating.... I know I'm not alone, so let's hope the tweaks and fixes come fast and furious.
