Horror Show

My new laptop started malfunctioning within one week - the "1" key had stopped working. I called Toshiba, they told me that the disk drive would be erased during repair, so I opted to just have a computer where there was no exclamation mark. As time went on the situationi slowly worsened; "1"'s would auto-fill in fields, then other numbers, then the keyboard stopped working altogether. I hooked up an external keyboard, but soon enough that was no solution either - the computer would auto-fill nonsense text into any available field. I called Toshiba, they instructed me to return the computer at my expense, and I sent it off only to get it back with the computer unrepaired, a sheet with "Other" checked off and the word "Disapproved" next to it, and the Control key ripped off and taped back on upsdide down with masking tape. I called Toshiba, they told me that it had been determined there was a liquid spill, and that they'd sent me an email which I hadn't responded to. They were, apparently misspelling my name in the email address, which is odd since I get at least 20 emails a week from Toshiba hawking new product. I explained to the customer rep that I live alone, have no pets, hadn't removed the laptop from my home since getting it, and that I had never spilled anything on the keyboard. I was sent a packing slip to return it for repairs, and I said in a note that if they were going to email me about a spill that I'd like them to hang onto the unit long enough for me to contact customer service for another solution. Nine days later, and with no emails received, the computer was back on my doorstep - the only change was that they'd turned the Control key rightside up (still taped on with masking tape). Really a comedy. I called Toshiba this morning and was told that liquid spills are not covered by their warranty (oh, and also they'd sent me an email again, they say, to the wrong email address which I'd corrected for them after getting it back the first time). I'm going to call corporate headquarters when they open up later today. This is a nightmare.

  • Dreamweaver 8, html help + how to stop "styles"

I have and continue to encounter great frustration over 2 things I encounter when using Dreamweaver 8 which, I am sure, are very easily solved matters. In advance...I apologize for my ignorance and would appreciate any input provided:
    1. I want to use Dreamweaver 8 to create HTML that I can paste into eBay ads. What emerges is HTML code by Dreamweaver that has no images appear because the image tags are: <img src="images/project/desiredimage1.jpg"> rather than whats needed,
full path, such as <img src="http://www.mywebsite.com/images/project/desiredimage1.jpg">
The result is that I have to copy and past the produced HTML into Open Office word processor, do "Find and Replace" ALL instances of img src="images with img src="http://www.mywebsite.com/images
What can I do to produce HTML code from within Dreamweaver that already has the full path to an image rather than just PART of the path to an image?
#2 is that when I make a webpage (or even just update a page in Dreamweaver) and I change the size or color of FONTS Dreamweaver applies a "STYLE" and number to that color and size of font so the result is HTML that is now, in places, got more HTML code preceeding text than any of you would probably believe + over 200 "Styles" created.
Questions are: Can I build a webpage without these "styles" being applied.... just alter a font and/or size color without my doing so result in absurd numbers of HTML style tags being pasted in front of a given area of text and is there any rescue for a page that NOW HAS hundreds of STYLES created in regards to that HTML document and literally is so replete with HTML coding
    that its a nightmare
(example: <p align="left" class="style267"><strong><span class="style19"><span class="style54">text) and I can't even change stuff in some areas because the changes just don't take which I assume is due to the mountain of uneccessary HTML coding born of this use of "Styles" which I don't even need.
So...Bottom line is I just need to get Dreamweaver to produce HTML that has FULL image paths AND I need it to STOP with the "STYLES" tags....could it REALLY be that I am unable to change a font without this resulting in a new "STYLE" being created and an additional TAG for that new style being plastered before a line of text IN ADDITION to however many previous STYLE tags
    already were THERE??!!??
Its really dreadful and the HTML of my webpage is a horror show....I think its LOST as in can't be saved...will have to be totally redone because of all the TAGS 90% of which don't need to be there. All thats needed is the most recent tag which corresponds to the latest font style, size color CHOSEN
Please help me to avoid this in the future and to be able make HTML that already has full paths to images.
Dayum even this forum is hard bcuz I had to come back in and edit so that scrolling wouldn't be necessary.....
    to read my post!!!
This planet has definitely grown way complex REAL quickly

    1. For the image, why not type the full path into the link box in the property inspector
    2.  Those styles are appearing because you are styling the text via the property inspector.  You need to create a stylesheet, and create all your styles into that and link to it within the document.

  • HP Mini 311 Blue Screen

I am on my second HP Mini 311 netbook running Windows 7 Home, with a Verizon internal wireless card.
Both machines have the exact same problem.  Blue Screen.
I found the following on the Verizon blog.
The problem is identicle to mine. Help please!
"I have an HP Mini 311-1037 netbook running windows 7, with a Verizon internal wireless card (HP un2400). I'm having intermittent crashes (BSOD) which always happen immediately after I terminate a wireless connection and then shut down VZ access manager. Basically, when I exit the program, the program window goes away, I see a smaller dialog box showing that the wireless card is powering down, and then the dreaded blue screen pops up. The error message code is BUGCODE_USB_DRIVERS. That error message seems odd since the internal card is not a USB device. However, when it powers up, I see a driver loading that is called "Qualcomm HS_USB_QDLoad So far, I've had 8 of these crashes. The event log always shows the same error message as the cause of the unexpected shutdown: bugcheck 0x000000fe (0x00000008,0x00000004, 0x852f05d4, 0x00000000) After the crash screen, windows tries to restart and fails. It then offers me the option of running a startup repair. That always fails. So then I have to do a system restore (roll back to an earlier restore point). That works, but it totally hoses up my A/V software. It then takes about 20 minutes to get that fixed. On balance, a real horror show. After the last two crashes, I discovered that if I decline to run startup repair, and just keep trying to do a normal reboot, then after the second or third try, it will start up OK without doing any repair or system recovery. That is also hard to figure out. HP technical support hasn't been very helpful so for. The HP support forum shows messages from a couple other owners of the same model net book who are reporting the same problem, so there may be a generic problem here. I tried updating the wireless modem firmware, using the latest download from HP. I was OK for 4 days, and then had 2 more crashes." .

I have had the same issue since I purshased the netbook last March. I have called both Verizon and HP in regards to the issue. First Verizon has told me that it is a HP issue and then i get connected to HP. I am on the phone with them for 5 hours cuz they want be to do re-do my network and other stuff. After a couple of days samething.  Call back and the samething. I have called 5 times already until I talked to someone two days ago in Verizon IT department. The rep told me not to use the VZ access program due to some issues they are having with Windows 7. I tried to use my netbook this morning and I got the blue screen again without using the VZ access program. So I dont know anymore. You really have to pull your teeth out to get the right help from both companies. I am gonna try and call again later today and see what happens. Why can't us the customers get the proper help and no wasting our time.

  • T400: Replace CCFL lamp or whole LCD?

    Hi everybody,
So my CCFL lamp on my T400 has pretty much died. I'm pretty sure it's not the inverter card due to the pink hue towards the bottom & the (lowering) hissing noise before the LCD shuts off. First noticed it would die pretty soon when the screen started flickering on dim settings.
At first I started to look for LCD assemblies (I have the Samsung panel one, LTN141WD-L05) , then told myself-dumb me! why not just replace the lamp (or both, since we there) since my LCD's doing just fine.
But then some people versed in laptops in general (but none had ever changed CCFL lamps before) told me I was better off changing the LCD assembly all together, since replacing the lamps is apparently a daunting & nerve wracking task. I'm not scared myself in replacing the whole LCD-I've change the LCD cover of a previous ThinkPad before and have disassembled this one countless times, including changing the CPU heatsink/fan unit-although never reaching the point of removing the LCD bezel (I did came close, when I had to check the hinges-but that's another story). And then, I don't think CCFL lamps are FRUs, and the HMM sure doesn't go into that territory.
    So, my question:
Has anybody ever changed CCFL lamps in a ThinkPad/other laptop? Is there even a guide out there ? (I'm still searching around for one)
Oh, and by the way, yes, my T400 is out of warranty (bought it in 2009, extended warranty expired in 2012)
Another detail: I live in Montreal, Canada, and I'd be happy to have it done by some local shop that would have competence in this. I mention local, because if I had to ship it I think I'd rather buy & have myself shipped a whole LCD unit instead. So I'm supposed to call tomorrow to my local Lenovo service center & a few approved service provider (from Lenovo's website) to inquire about their prices **and** turn-around time (again, if it takes a month I'd do either one of the repairs myself)
Thanks in advance, any feedback will be appreciated.
Edit: There's actually only one CCFL lamp in the LTN141WD-L05.
    ThinkPad T400 (2764-CTO): Windows 7 64 SP2 / T9400 2.53 GHz / 8GB RAM / 14.1" WXGA+ (1440x900) / ATI Radeon HD 3470 + Intel 4500MHD (switchable) / 320GB 7200rpm / DVD±RW / Intel WiFi 5300
    Past models: T40 (2373-PM1), 760C; other brands
    Solved!

Hissing comes from the inverter. Redness from the CCFL. Both must be replaced.
Having changed a CCFL myself on a T30 many years ago I swore never to do it again, and would advise everyone else to just flip the screen or an entire assembly. The chances of introducing dust specs between the LCD layers in the process of swapping the bulb are just way too high for my liking, and that's only one of the problems.
Secondly, Samsung screens are in general a horror show to change the CCFL on, regardless of the generation.
Lastly, T400 panels are rather inexpensive nowadays...
If you insist on a guide, here's the best one there is, at least in my opinion:

  • "don't have permission to see its contents"

    Greetings,
I'm really having problems with this Snow Leopard, and don't want to be agitated, or frustrated, but it's getting harder and harder to do so.
After installing on my 17" Macbook Pro, I was able to log in, fine, but was unable to do much of anything, as I was prompted to give a administrator password, but had no idea of what this was.
After trying every combination of my name (which has been my user name from before time), and pass work, I got it in my head that "this messing ain't cutting it."
After a bit of looking here on the forum, I was able to find out how to use my install disc to crate a "system administrator" account, and then, after restarting from my hard drive, I was able to go into the system preferences, find my users, and give myself permissions to act as an administrator (after this, I read several posts about how it's scary to crate an administrator account -- and it was -- but just tried to be strong -- channeling bit of strength from an alligator I once saw eat a big chunk of old truck tire, and just pressed on).
Now I should note that while I was log in as the (scary) administrator, I did seem that I was able to open folders without issue, however, when I logged back in as me (the monkey of wire), nothing much had changed, I could not open any folders with exception of "public" and something else like that...
The warning I get is ""don't have premission to see its contents" -- wow, I can't even look?
    Frightening.
And, what scares me even more, is that I can go back in my time machine and see things that I would like to bring forward, but when I try to, I'm told "this is part of OS X and can't be modified... " or something close to that... Don't worry about this issue right now, I think it might be tied to the "no permission" deal, but if I've lost those back ups... Well, we all know what that feeling is like, and I will be feeding parts of my grays anatomy to said "Alligator."
So, while I'm here, what about just going back to OSX plain old Leopard?
Can I do this if I do a reset to factory install?
Will that boot out all the snow?
And if so, what I fear is that I have already corrupted my time machine drive with a back up done while this Snow Leopard OS installed... Yeah, when I plugged in the drive to check what it's staturse was, the Macbook just jumped in and performed a new back up -- of this state of affaires.... Scary again.
I was thinking I might be able to go into the drive and erase this one (or perhaps two) backups, but then when I looked there is a document that's very new -- like just at the time this back up was being done -- and it's called something catalog, I think, and I have a gut wrenching feeling that to erase that would be the beginning of a horror show... So, let me not go there just yet...
Wow, that's a lot... Any help on this would just be awesome.
I honestly just rock out hard no my apple products, I'm a long time user, and always do things carefully and with thought, but this is very underwater frozen under the snow black water gator **** for me right this moment in time.
    Thank you,
    WM

I found a solution over on Macrumors forums, though it's not for the faint of heart. The solution starts at post #36, about halfway down the page:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=417647&highlight=ACL&page=2
As I suspected, this is a Terminal / Unix / Command-line procedure, and anyone uncomfortable with it should probably just take their Mac to the Genius Bar at their local Apple store. That said, below is the procedure that worked for me (I'll make it easier for those who don't want to read the whole thread on macrumors.com).
Also, the first procedure is ONLY FOR HARD DRIVES/VOLUMES WITH ONE-WORD NAMES. If you have two or more words in the name(s), the procedure is slightly different, and I've listed that below the first procedure.
*1. Open an application in your Utilities folder called Terminal.*
This is the Unix part of Mac OS X that does not have a GUI (graphic user interface). Think of it like working in DOS (or BASIC), if you're as old as I am. It's also a bit like a word processing program, only much more powerful.
You type a command (_EXACTLY, character for character, space for space, as it is shown in the example_) and then hit ENTER or RETURN to execute the command. After the first ENTER/RETURN, you will probably have to enter your account password (or an administrator password if you're not logged in as such).
You won't see any characters appear as you type your password, (the cursor remains in the same place) but continue typing it and then hit RETURN/ENTER.
    2. In Terminal, CUT AND PASTE the following lines +one at a time+ (obviously replace "Volumename" with the name of your volume). Make SURE you include spaces where there are spaces. And those are ZEROS after "chflags" and "chown", not Oh's.
Hit RETURN/ENTER after the "Volumename", and watch your HD's icon on your desktop after each command. In my case, the little padlock disappeared first, then my custom icon was restored, and then it was just blink blink every time after. But it works!!! REMEMBER, THIS FIRST PROCEDURE IS ONLY FOR VOLUMES WITH SINGLE-WORD NAMES:
    *sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/Volumename* <HIT RETURN/ENTER HERE> (don't type this part in Terminal.
    *sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/Volumename* <HIT RETURN/ENTER HERE>
    *sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/Volumename* <HIT RETURN/ENTER HERE>
    *sudo chmod -N /Volumes/Volumename* <HIT RETURN/ENTER HERE>
BUT if your volume's name includes one or more spaces like this: "My HD Backup", then you must write the command like this (Notice the spaces :
    sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/firstname\ secondname\ thirdname\ fourthname\ fifth etc.
    sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/firstname\ secondname\ thirdname\ fourthname\ fifth etc.
    sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/firstname\ secondname\ thirdname\ fourthname\ fifth etc.
    sudo chmod -N /Volumes/firstname\ secondname\ thirdname\ fourthname\ fifth etc.
    or like in my example:
    Quote:
    sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/My\ HD\ Backup
    sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/My\ HD\ Backup
    sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/My\ HD\ Backup
    sudo chmod -N /Volumes/My\ HD\ Backup
That should do it! Hope it works for everyone with this problem. Thanks to "IEatApples" on MacRumors for the solution!
For anyone who cares, here's what another MacRumors user (angelwatt) said these commands actually do:
    1. chflags 0 removes all flags from the file(s)
    2. chown 0:80 ensures root:admin (owner:group) permissions so the system can access the files
    3. chmod 775 adjusts file permissions so you and your group have read/write/execute permissions
    4. chmod -N removes the ACL (Access Control Lists) from the named file(s)
    Cheers!
*disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any mucking up this does to your machine due to mis-types by you or me. But pull up your bootstraps, be brave, this works!

  • Problems downloading Lion 10.7.4

I'm trying to download Lion 10.7.4.  I've tried 3 times.  The Lion icon on my dashboard does nothing, just has a msg that says "waiting".  Has anyone else had this download problem?

Final Verdict from Apple Download URL itself for 10.7.4:
    4 and above: 117
    3 or lower:      82
Not particularly the rosiest of endorsements.
--Only speaking for a select audience of iMac 6,1 users below--
    Already have LION installed:
I'll just flat out tell you...DON'T.  Run away, far away. Stay with 10.7.3 until another update.
Otherwise If you are a type person that doesn't perform a restorable mirror back up prior to updating, there is more than minor probability you may regret not doing so.  See my previous Post reference links.
    Running Snow Leopard:
Same as above...wait till 10.7.5 or somehow find a 10.7.3 install.
    Regardless of the LION version:
I personally have installed LION.  It's not a total horror show, and I reap the benefits of the new features such as iCloud and seamless transfers of iPhone's PhotoStream not in Snow Leopard.  It is slower, be warned. Even with MAX ram of 3GB installed.
    Final personal soap box comment:
I had ended up with two iMac's, a 6,1 and Early 2009. Had I kept the iMac6 (which I graciously gifted) I would have just upgraded the iMac9 and would have gone though the motions of reinstalling Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on the iMac6,1, the performance impact bothered me that much.   ...but.... had I only one iMac and it being 2006, I would have left LION on.  So the features outweighed performance impact in that one model scenario.
Steady yourself for the worst possible performance hit after upgrading to LION, and you will be delighted that not soooo bad.  Expect miracles from your aging 2006, disappointment ahead.

  • Problems with Friday the 13th update.

First of all, it's rather an odd date for Verizon to update the Thunderbolt firmware, don't you think?
Secondly, I have had nothing but bugs since I did the update and am a bit perturbed by the fact that Verizon has released this. It appears to me they released it only for their benefit and not the users. They now added a message when tethering the computer to a laptop saying basically you're an idiot if you think you are going to get this free. They also added that to the hotspot feature.
As far as fixes, from their summary, they said they fixed something about the weather widget, well mine doesn't update correctly now when it should and it did before the update. I have to remove the widget then add it to get the weather to update for my current location. They broke it, not fixed it.
Internet connection mode: worked great before. Now it not only give's me their nag message about having to pay when the promotion is done but the phone internet goes down when I've disconnected the USB cable and won't come back up until I cycle the power on the phone. Hey, it use to work flawlessly and now it's buggy.
So my conclusion is a) the only reason for this latest up date is about Verizon and not about the customer. b) Verizon has no regard for their customers and rather release a shoddy firmware update that has more problems then the original only to update their revenue base.

4G LTE network still flaky as french pastry. The browser now randomly reporting network failures and then crashes. The UI is not as smooth as before and the battery life is still the same.
So what the hell exactly was this update supposed to fix besides the weather widget and a bunch of the Verizon bloatware apps that I don't want anyway? If this phone is going to turn into the horror show I had with the Blackberry Storm 2 it replaced, then I am going to have a real problem. I wonder if Google knows how badly their name is getting dragged through the manure by VZW?

  • LG L246WH 24" LCD won't allow selection of native resolution

I have a 20" Cinema Display (connected via a MiniDisplayPort to DVI Adatper) and an LG L246WH connected to the GT120 in my new Mac Pro - System profiler sees it as:
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 120:
Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 120
    Type: Display
    Bus: PCIe
    Slot: Slot-1
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 512 MB
    Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0640
    Revision ID: 0x00a1
    ROM Revision: 3386
    Displays:
    L246WH:
    Resolution: 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz
    Depth: 32-Bit Color
    Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    Rotation: Supported
    Television: Yes
    Cinema:
    Resolution: 1680 x 1050
    Depth: 32-Bit Color
    Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    Rotation: Supported
But the LG's native resolution is 1920x1200, not 1080. My MacBook Pro drove it happily at that resolution, but the GT120 seems to see it as a 1080p device only. How do I go about getting the Mac Pro to recognise it properly?

I am having very similar problems and it is a complete nightmare.
    from another post
Just bought two great monitors from Fujitsu/Siemens. 26 Inch Each.
Also I got the MacPro with a.m- graphic card. This is a horror show. And it does not work.
I have them hooked up with DVI. Each work fine on their own with their max resolution which is full HD - 1920 * 1200.
So when I hook both up the main will show the gray apple boot screen. As soon as Login Window appears, both screens will go black and I have to power cycle the mac as I cant see a thing. If I boot into safe mode, one monitor will come up. If I set that to - 1280*720 and do a reboot - this time into normal boot. The 1280 * 720 screen will appear but the other will remain black. If I open display prefs. and set the black screen to 1280*720 I can use em both. Goes without saying that such a setting aint no fun and totally useless on a 26Inch screen.
Soon as I try and set any of the screens to native max size - the go black on reboot.
I dont know what to do. At all.
Hooking those displays up on my old harpertown 8 core - is working fine.
The specs of the graphic card states that I should be able to run that setup.
I am pretty disappointed in this. Any help would be appreciated.

  • What's the deal with the CC menubar panel?

What's the deal with the CC menubar panel? The tab to the apps are gone -- looks like it wants me to update the panel itself rather than list my installed apps. I've been on CC for about a month, is this common? Thankfully I can still open all apps normally, but the internet seems to think the "CC Way" is a horror show.
Do you guys have trouble after updating the updater? All this talk of running "the cleaner" (a mafia term?) and reinstalling everything with each version bump is kinda scary. It could be that people only post online when things go wrong, and 95% of people update just fine. But since I'm new I guess I'd want some reassurance before committing to a night of Cleaning and Reinstalling...
I'm one of those people who think app updates very 12 to 18 months was just fine (and stable). Would it be harmful to ignore updates for a few months? Lets see, I have a healing brush, smart objects, a blob tool, pretty good 3D in AE, ID seems to handle type pretty well… there's really no reason to update every month is there?
    -- Jim

Has anyone had a normal non-cleaning install of this week's update?

  • Tabbed panels, Tooltip, IE6

I have a tooltip on the second panel of tabbed panels.  Works fine x-browser and renders fine in IE6.
However, when the tooltip fires (and only then) the first paragraph (<p>) of the second panel goes blank (looks like it just changes font color to black, my bg is black), and so does the paragraph (<p>) on the first panel.
I cannot see how to fix this short of removing the tooltip.  I'd rather not.
Anyone know a fix?  Or how to force the color back (if that's the problem) from black?  Or (horrors) show user a failure message?  I'm totally lost here and dependent on your help.
Come to think of it (for other reasons), what is the best method to send a popup message to user -- such as browser not supported?  IE5.5 for example.
    Thanks.
    Greg

    Thanks.
    http://www.petsatlanta.com/Pages/aboutustab.html
Problem only in IE6.  Note that tabs Pet Sitters and Office Staff each have tooltips.  There is no issue until user hovers over one of the tool tips.  Then the first paragraph on tabs Company and Pet Sitters vanishes...sort of.  If I highlight it, its there, just not visible - looks like the font goes black.
    Thanks.

  • Flash video - behaviour when buffering stops

I've started using progressive Flash video on one of my sites. The objective is to provide subtitling for foreign learners of English. It works well, subtitles jump around on full screen, but that's just cosmetic.
However, one of my testers reports that periodically the playback stops, and you have to press the start button to continue.  The desired behaviour would be à la YouTube, where it pauses, the buffer fills, it continues. I've only seen this problem once on my system.

    So, can I ask
    1.  With progressive flash video, what is the expected default behaviour when the playback hits the end of the buffer because too little data is being downloaded - is it supposed to recover and continue automatically ?
    or
    2.  If not, is there a known fix ?
My goodness, it's a black art Flash Video !  Here's a link where maybe you'll see the problem.

... and if you don't you can enjoy the famous bit of the Rocky Horror Show !

  • Lightroom 2.0 wont start

I am having trouble getting LR 2.0 to start on my PC. After downloading and installing it and then attempting to run it, it wont start. In the Windows Task Manager under the Processes tab "lightroom.exe" shows up but it never actually starts.
What I've tried so far to fix the problem.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it 3 times.
I've run Registry Mechanic to clean up my Registry.
I've disabled my Antivirus program during the download and install process.
    I'm on a PC
    4 gigs of RAM
    2.67 Ghz processor
    512 Video Card
My system runs CS3 and LR 1.4.1 just fine.

    Nailed it !!!!!!
Thanks to Lee Jay (a REALLY big thanks) for this tip as I have already blown about 8 hours on this problem and was faced with a re-build of some sort if I couldn't resolve it.
Some additional information for others .... I experienced exactly the same thing as Steve; I spoke with Adobe 3 times and escalated to a more senior tech. Their recommendation was to try running LR2 from a new, Admin account. This worked - but was a hopeless suggestion as I have a 'rich' environment established under my existing Admin account and migrating that was going to be a horror show. Also, who wants 2 Admin accounts .... and on ... and on.... I did try running LR 2 from my normal Admin account with the new account's creditionals (you can set that up in a shortcut) but that was problematic as all sorts of small things did not reference properly; Show in Explorer did NOT work; Edit in Cs3 had problems ... etc When LR would invoke Firefox for HELP - I had no bookmarks as FireFox would run in the new account's space, etc.
Then I found Lee's suggestion and tried it. However, deleting the prefs file did NOT solve it ... same problem. However, I COPIED the preferences file from the new account, where it did work, to my regular account in the locations specified and, voila, I am running.
So, my tip would be ... create the new admin account; run LR2 and establish the preferences; quit the program in both accounts; then copy the prefs from the new acct over to the Preferences folder in your original account. These are in Documents and Settings/.....
This link is the page from the FAQ that discusses the locations of the various folders....pasted here for quick ref as it took me a couple of minutes to find it.

  • IPhoto Back-Ups From Time Machine/Time Capsule Are Useless.

I use iPhoto constantly and I use a 2TB Time Capsule with Time Machine on and nothing omitted from it's back ups.
When trying to recover my iPhoto library today with Time Machine using both the Time Machine Interface and the Finder, I kept getting incomplete albums that were missing photos, even if they were versions created after the photos were imported. I was stumped.
A little research uncovered this support article from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4116
    Summary:
+iPhoto libraries are not backed up by Time Machine if iPhoto is running during the back up process.+
Oh No. I leave my iPhoto application open constantly.
I bought the best MacBook Pro money could by with 8GB of RAM so I could have multiple applications open for my design work which can sometimes have me grinding away for hours, if not days on multiple projects, all using iPhoto and Photoshop.
There is no "Save" function in iPhoto. Does this mean I am supposed to periodically quit iPhoto, perform a Time Machine back up, then restart iPhoto?
Does that sound reasonable to anyone?
This is an absolute horror show for me.
If anyone knows where freshly imported photos go if they don't end up in the iPhoto library's back-up because iPhoto was running while the back up occurred, I would love to know. Is there a photo-limbo?

Dear Joel, I'm not an expert but I believe that it is simply impossible backing up something on progress; in other words since TM works through an incremental back up of the file, I think it's mandatory to stop working on a file before the copy of it is performed, that's to say you must close iPhoto.

  • CS6 font selector is a UI fail

Please put the font selection menu in the Character tool panel back the way it was in CS5, where it showed a dozen or so fonts in the drop-down and I could actually scroll through the list with the mouse scroll wheel or the dropdown's scrollbar -- exactly as the one in the quick Control toolbar at the top works (why are they even different?) -- instead of this horror-show font menu that opens up the entire height of my monitor and has to be navigated by moving all the way to the edges and watching it scroll hair-pullingly slow.

I'm so glad I found this thread! In some way I'm glad it's not just me that finds the font system in illustrator completely and utterly infuriating.
This program is 25 years old, any other software house would be bending over backwards to make their program the best it can be and this is the system they're happy to let users struggle through? It's unbelievable.
It's not like it's a donationware program wrtitten by a single developer.
I think Adobe should be embarrassed with the functionality of their program. I watched a few videos on the new features of CS6 and it was basically people saying 'this function is a bit better than it used to be' going crazy over breadcrumbs.
I've seen 'Adobe will not admit they're wrong/have any weakness' a few times here and there, well it's about time they started listening to the people that have to work with their program because it's not good enough.
I don't expect to have to wait whilst the fonts slowly tick by and with them moments of our lives, it's a major inconvenience. I don't expect to have to click random places on my screen to get rid of a pop up/drop down menu, the program should know that if I have been adjusting a value and then click on the direct selection tool I want the direct selection tool, close the entry box instantly.
Why do I have to double click the color swatch? Why, when I've selected a path and hold my finger on the left arrow key (to nudge) am I whizzing through the file, edit, object, type.... bar?
Why does the color mode not stay on HSB? Who regularly uses RGB to adjust colors anyway? Put a color wheel in,  go on, it won't kill you. People love flexibilty.
Why do gradients have to be rasterized when using 3D? Just shift the path and change the gradient angle for me.
Why isn't there a fillet tool?
Why don't you change the tone of the buttons so the different selctions are clear? (Select, create, manipulate etc).
When it comes to text selection in a project why are my only options - a tiny line that's fiddly to click on or a giant invisible box that covers everything? How about if I want to select the writing I could just click on the text?
Why can't we drag the words for data boxes like in photoshop? (eg:opacity) that's a great feature!
And why can't we have gradients on text?!
Adobe: because text is not actually a path and gradients can only be applied to paths.
Right, so write your way around the problem, make it so when a user selects the text tool, types some text and presses enter the program makes a temporary path which remains until a user double clicks the text (at which point the path is returned to proper text) and makes an adjustment. When they have finished adjusting they hit enter and a new temporary path is created.
Basically, there's a lot of little tweaks they could make that would have a big effect on the overall experience.
It's easier to ignore the little things but sometimes you just have to roll your sleeves up and get it done.
That feels better (lol) and breathe......
    Ohhmmmmmmmm

  • IPhoto '11 Deletes All Albums, Events And Photos From iPad after Sync

In addition to many of the other issues mentioned on this thread, today I synced my iPad for the first time since upgrading to iPhoto '11. After syncing, all the photos, events and albums except for "Imported Photos" were deleted.
In iTunes, the iPad is set to sync albums and events from the last 12 months.
iPhoto '11 has been a horror show for me. I use iPhoto daily and am currently in the process of downgrading via Time Machine.
I understand that as a professional photographer I should be using Aperture or Lightroom, but I've just always felt comfortable with iPhoto.

I really wish I hadn't jumped on this the first day. I need to wait a little bit and read the forums. Had I done this, I would've done a complete clone of my photo library prior to this. now I've lost a few months worth of photos, which *****. And there are people in a lot worse situations than I. Lesson learned.
