One issue that can cause this is using Nikon software to transfer or view the raw images that is older than the camera. This is known to corrupt the image and make the unrecognizable to Adobe software. You can reverse this corruption using a utility found here:

A way to test if this is the issue would be to transfer new raw images from the camera or card to your computer without using Nikon software, but instead using the OS apps like Explorer or Finder.

I have tried so many things including downloading the plug in and even DNG converting but would rather be able to open RAW files direct and not have to convert everything to DNG anyway as it is time wasting. The 100D is supported from ACR 7.4, which was released shortly after the camera came on market. ACR 7.x requires Photoshop CS6 to run, and won't work in the by now very old Photoshop CS4.
So your only option is to convert to DNG and open those in ACR 5.x / PS CS4. (or upgrade, of course, but I take it you don't want that).
EDIT: assuming Canon 100D.

At the moment however it can only read not write to Mac drives.
But it is free and maybe sufficient.

I can't open up a specific .psd file in Photoshop cs6.

     Well, there's a specific file I can't open. I've worked on it previously, but a week later, and it won't open. All of my other PS CS6 files are intact, and will open immediately. However, this one file takes so long to load (2+ hours) that I end up restarting my computer in order to work on all of my other things. The size isn't the issue, either; it's only 70 megabytes, as opposed to some of my more heavy-duty files that run upwards 200 megabytes.
     I'm thinking about opening it on another computer to see what happens, but I'm concerned about the fact that I can't open this particular file. I'm not sure if it's corrupted, based on the fact that it just sits on my computer and just tells me that it's loading.
     Is there something I can do to make it open, or modify the file? I've already tried defragging my computer and other things, and I'm at a loss here. I really don't want to start working on this from scratch, so I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Unfortunately, few have ever had much luck rescuing information from corrupted PSD files.
