How do i check what's taking up all of my space on the macbook air?

Hi,
I've only just got the macbook air 2012 with 64gb of space and now it seems that i have run out of space..Apparently i'm using 54gb and i just can't see how thats possible, because i've only download atleast 2 apps and got iphoto and imovie.
Also i haven't got mavericks because i don't think i have enough and i just don't see how i've run out already?? How can i check how much i have left and whats taking up all the space?

Hi DanZeMan,
Click on the Apple in the upper left-hand corner, then on About This Mac>More Info, then on the top of that window, click on Storage. It will show you a graphic indicating what is taking up your storage:
Cheers,

  • How can I check what version of Java Web Start is installed on the client ?

    hi,
Can anyone tell me how can I check what version of java web start is installed on the client and display a message if the client has not the good version ?
    I mean:
I'd like all people running my application use java 5 and if someone using java 1.4 try to run the application get a nice screen telling him to download the latest version of Java Web Start.
    Is this possible ?
    Thanks in advance.

Of course, I put this on my jnlp file,
    <resources>
        <j2se version="1.5+"/>
        <jar href="..... "/>
</resources> But even with that, it doesn't display a nice message but a kind of exception instead.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How can I determine what is taking up my hard drive space?

I have a 55GB hard drive with 6.83GB of free space remaining. I find it hard to believe that I have 50GB of space used. How do I find out what is taking up the 50GB of disc space? I manually run the sudo daily, weekly, monthly jobs so I don't believe it's log files, etc. Thanks in advance.
    Mike

Case in point; in my iPhoto Library I have Thumb64.data, ThumbJPG.data, Library.iPhoto, etc, can these be deleted?
    No. Leave it alone.
    All Log files?
    Yes.
What about the Library\Caches directory; can all of this data be deleted without impacting application or system performance?
    Yes.

  • Time Machine: What's taking up all of that space?

I have a 500Gb External Hard Drive, partitioned in halves for Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner.
Recently I had a main hard drive failure. CCC saved my bacon (Oh yes. It's worth having!). The local Apple Boutique restored all of our info to a new 1Tb drive from CCC on the external drive. When I brought the computer home, I popped into Time machine a couple of times to retrieve a few bits of recent info, as CCC was about three weeks old.
On approximately the third visit to TM I noticed that it was only showing a few days of information instead of the year or so that was there previously. At the same time, TM began showing an error message that "This backup is too large for the backup volume.". Although it only shows a few days worth of info to draw from, it says that only 103Gb are available of the 232Gb in that partition.
I'm doing a Disk Utility disk repair right now, but are there other things I should be looking for?
    My system is:
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac5,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          1 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          IM51.0090.B09
      SMC Version (system):          1.9f4

Thanks Ralph. That is a very useful page.
I found the cause of the problem: A common cause of this is restoring all your data, either to the original internal HD or a replaced one,  depending on the restore method and what version of OSX you're on.  In some cases, everything restored is treated as new, so must be backed-up again.
So TM is recognizing the restored data as new info and wants to stack it up on top of itself again. That explains why there isn't enough room.
My new question is this; the quick and easy would be to erase all of that old TM backup from the partition and start over. Is here no way to change its mind about duplicating all of that data and have TM carry on as normal? With my crappy and intermittent memory it would be nice to be able to go back into TM if something suddenly comes to mind along the lines of, "Hey! Whatever happened to that 'thingy' that we had last fall? I would like to have that again but it got deleted along the way somehow."

  • How do I find what is taking up all the space in my iMovie library?

If I find the my iMovie library in Finder, it's total size is a reported 15.59GB and, as far as I can tell, I cannot open it in Finder to see what files are taking up that space.
If I look at my iMovie library in iMovie, it apparently contains one event, which contains one movie.
If I select the move as then go to File -> Reveal in Finder, I can see all the folders and files associated with the event and they come to a grand total of 5.95 GB.
So, how do I find out what movies, clips or projects are taking up the other ~ 10GB in the iMovie library folder?
    I'm using iMovie 10.0.5

When I did that, I could still only see the same contents as shown in the third screenshot above. However, minutes after doing the "Show package contents", iMovie seems to have figured out that it didn't have 15GB of data in its library after all and updated its size accordingly. So, problem solved for now but I still find iMovie to be painful to use and I will probably avoid doing so as much as I can.

  • I just noticed Private browing option, has this been downloaded or automatically added? I dont want my kids up to no good, as how can i check what they're looking at? Can you delete the private browser?

Can you delete the private brower option

That has been a feature in Firefox since Firefox 3.5 was released in June, 2009, it's not '''new'''.
Sorry, that feature can't be "removed" without breaking a security part of Firefox, and the developers didn't provide a "switch" to allow parents to turn it off. What's even worse it that there is a Bug filed to disable Private Browsing when the Parental Control's that are built into Windows Vista and Windows 7 are turned on. Nothing has been done to fix that Bug in almost 2 years since that Bug was originally filed. <br />
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=471658 <br />
Hell, there hasn't even been a comment posted in that Bug in almost 7 months. I have done everything I can do as a support helper to make the developers aware of how important this Bug is for parents, based upon parental feedback here - that has been accepted as ''' "Thanks .... So it's on average 2 requests for this per week." '''
In all honesty though, even if that Bug is fixed a child can just delete their browsing history in any browser quite easily; sure you'll see that it has been deleted, but you still won't know where they have been. You really need to install some Parental Controls on that PC that tracks the web sites that are being visited outside of a web browser, and can only be accessed with a password.
I don't have any recommendations for that type of software, as I haven't needed it myself. Never had any children, and if I did even my grand-children would probably be old enough not to need monitoring like that.

  • How can I tell what is taking up all my memory?

My macbook has around 75 GB of memory and I have around 5 GB free.  I don't keep large amounts of music or pictures/videos on here. I don't have a ton of apps either.  I have a dropbox folder that is around 6GB.  How can I figure out where all the space is being taken up?

Well, start by highlighting everything in Macintosh HD.
Then on the keyboard hit Command + i, or just right click on a folder / sidebar, and click Get Info, 1 by 1, or all at once. Your choice.
This will bring up the Get Info, telling you the size of the individual folders.
You can then move into the biggest one & narrow it down even more.

  • How do I identify what is using up all my disc space?

    Hi,
I am about to run out of harddrive space, and am trying to identify where I am using up all my capacity.
Is there a good utility that I can use to identify candidate files to move over to an external harddrive? Or if not a utility, what do folks in the forum use to keep their 500G drive as clean as possible?
    Thanks,

Try OmniDiskSweeper, WhatSize, or Grand Perspective - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • How do I reliably back up all of my data on a Macbook Air?

    I Have a 2009 MacBook AIr running OS 10.6.7
I have begun to recieve some erros about the harddrive and when I went to verify the disc - the disc utility reported errors and that I needed to repair my drive.
The institution where I work has imposed the installation of PGP (pretty good protection) software (recently purchased by Symantec) on all Mac laptops.  I have heard of the PGP software causing disc errors to a point where none of the data is recoverable.
    Two questions:
    1.  How can I un-install the PGP software - this way I can repair the drive and also upgrade to OS-10.7 (PGP does not support Lion at this time).
    2.  Perhaps more importantly - how do I make a complete backup (bootable clone would be ideal) of the Macbook air - so that I do not lose any of the data on the computer?  I am afraid to turn it off as I am not sure if it will even turn back on again).
Thanks in advance for your expertise and your willingness to help out a fellow Mac user.
    Have a great week.

    Answering your second question, first.
Download Carbon copy Cloner from Bombich.
Prepare an external drive using disk Utility with a GUID partition large enough to hold the entire contents of your startup drive. Format with Disk Utility as Mac OS Extended, Journaled. Check in Disk Utility. to make sure the partition uses a GUID Partition Table.
    Launch Carbon Copy Cloner
Choose the volume that you want to clone from the Source menu
Choose the properly formatted volume (Mac OS Extended, Journaled, GUID Partition) from the Destination menu
Select "Temporarily archive modified and deleted items" ("Maintain a backup) from the preconfigured settings menu
    Click the Clone button
Test the cloned image by booting to it by starting the computer, whilst holding down the "option" key, then select the volume you just cloned to. The computer should boot to that drive. After you are at a desktop, I think it is a good idea to change the wall paper to something unusual and striking, so you know that this is the clone. Play around with the cloned boot to make sure everything works. Dismount (eject) the internal HDD, so you know everything you are doing is independent of the internal drive.
There are numerous iterations and implementations of PGP. Is this a simple stand alone app that can be removed by moving the application in the application folder to the trash? Or is it a background systemwide  encryption/decryption scheme for the entire disk?

    Thank you so much

If you want seperate accounts for managing apps and purchasing content, basically yes, you need two account and would need to repurchase. However, if you just want seperate ID for iMessgae, icloud and such, you can do that and still continue sharing the same Id for apps and itunes.
