  • How do I increase the width of the first column in the Terminal ls -l command?

    I am now running 10.9.x, but I've experienced the problem described in the question over the last several iterations of OS X.
    I use bash as my interactive shell. When I display the "ls -l" command in Terminal the output is often very difficult for me to scan, because the columns in which are displayed the several fields of the records for the listed files are misaligned (different left-hand first-letter starting points for left-aligned text-valued fields; different right-hand low-digit alignment of numerical fields).
    When I look more closely at the mess displayed in my Terminal window, it appears that the cause of the problem may be that no minimum width, or an inadequate minimum width, has somewhere been set or defined for the first column of each record, containing the file's "mode" string (permissions, etc.); for all records in which this string is of equal length, the succeeding columns for all fields in those records are themselves aligned.
    It has not always been thus for me in the Terminal with OS X, or else I might not dream that the world could be a better place in this one respect. But if I launch an interactive csh-shell instead of bash in Mavericks today, the columns of the ls -l command there align no better.
    I've found no help in the Unix man pages for the ls command. There is a COLUMNS environment  variable whose value is supposed to be used by the ls command to set the width of every column displayed, but this is not what I want to do, and in my shell "ls -l" seems to ignore the exported variable anyway.
    There is also an LS_COLWIDTHS environment variable that is described as setting column widths on a field-by-field basis, at least for some fields, but the the mode column is not included among those whose width is supposed to be adjustable, and my shell seems to ignore the value of this variable as well.
    I've looked in my rather simple ~/.profile and ~/.bashrc files for anything that I might plausibly suspect of producing or perpetuating this behavior, but there is nothing there. Any suggestions about how to remedy this problem?

    John,
    I would like you to perform a safe boot. On reboot, press and hold the shift key at the chime, until the grey horizontal bar appears. After you type in your password, press and hold the shift key again, then click the right arrow to login, and release the shift key when your desktop appears. Move the contents of your local ~/Library/Caches into the Trash. Reboot normally. Empty your Trash.
    Re-evaluate your Terminal behavior. If it now works ok, great. Otherwise, here are a sequence of screen shots of my Terminal preferences for comparison. I can use both Courier fonts without formatting issues. Click to enlarge. I use the free IR Black Terminal theme as a personal choice in OS X 10.9.4. In my ~/.bashrc file (triggered from ~/.bash_profile), I export TERM=xterm-256color, and invoke /usr/bin/tput init. Click on the following images to enlarge.

  • How to increase the width of the Crystal Report

    Hello All
    How to increase the width of the Crystal report template in the CR designer in .NET 2005 editor ?
    I need to design a report which has to accomodate more number of columns.So achieve that i need to redesign the report having more width.
    CrystalReports version 10.2.3600.0
    Thanks in advance
    Srivatsa

    HI Srivatsa,
    You can make a wider report by creating virtual pages. Virtual pages are the extra pages to the right of the main page that get created to accommodate cross-tabs that are wider than a single page. By inserting a cross-tab in a report then suppressing it, you can create a report that is multiple pages wide.
    Insert and Suppress a Cross-Tab
    1. On the 'Insert' menu, click 'Cross-Tab'.
    2. In the Cross-Tab Expert, click any field and move it into the 'Columns' box, and click any field and move it into the 'Summarized Fields' box. Do not move any fields into the 'Rows' box.
    3. Click the 'Customize Style' tab and select the following check boxes:
    " Suppress Empty Rows
    " Suppress Empty Columns
    " Suppress Row Grand Totals
    " Suppress Column Grand Totals
    4. Click the 'OK' button and then insert the cross-tab into the Report Header section.
    5. On the 'Report' menu, click 'Format Sections'. Click 'Report Header' and select the 'Underlay Following Sections' check box.
    When you run the report you will not see the cross-tab, but you will be able to scroll to the right and see multiple virtual pages.
    ====================
    NOTES:
    " As there are no rows to the Cross-Tab, it does not carry on to Page 2 and the virtual pages do not appear past the first page.
    " To increase or decrease the number of virtual pages do one of the following:
    - Limit the number of records for the field in the 'Column' box of the 'Cross-Tab Expert' using the 'Select Expert'.
    - Change the width of the 'Column' field in the Cross-Tab by moving the edges of the field.
    ====================
    How to Insert Fields on Virtual Pages
    You cannot drag-and-drop a field onto a virtual page, you can only do so on the main page. To get a field to appear on a virtual page:
    1. Insert the field on the main page.
    2. Click the 'Preview' tab.
    3. Drag the right edge of the field to the right, onto the virtual page.
    4. Drag the left edge of the field to the right, onto the virtual page.
    Hope this helps!!

    Shweta

  • How can I change the width of a column in a list of sharepoint 2010 ?

    How do I change the column width in sharepoint 2010 so the data displays properly in standard view?
    I open the list View in sharepoint designer,and change the width of the <td> ,but ,when I preview ,the column width don't change. what should I do?

    While they may auto adjust to what it thinks is a correct width, far too often it allocates way too much room and that causes lists with 4 columns to be much longer than they need to be and without the ability to adjust them, lists look strange.
    http://twitpic.com/23ro09/full is an example of the first column having been allocated too much room.

  • How to increase the width of the drop down list box in SSRS multi value parameter

    Hi,
    I am using SSRS 2012. I have a parameter, which accepts multi value.
    The width of the drop down list box is very small, and the user need to scroll to the right to view the complete view of the content in the list box. But, if I don't use multi value then the length is good.  Kindly suggest how to I increase the width
    of the list box when it set to multi value parameter.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mahalengam Arumugam

    Hi Mahalengam,
    After testing the issue in my local environment, I can reproduce it. When the values for a single parameter are too long, the drop-down list of the parameter will automatically enlarge to an appropriate size. While the values for a multiple parameter are
    too long, we need to scroll to the right to view the complete view of the content in the list box in SSRS 2008. But in SSRS 2008R2 and SSRS 2012, we can directly drag the black control at the bottom of the list box to control the size.
    The following screenshot is for your reference:
    If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.
    Thanks,

    Hi Katherine,
    Thanks for your reply. I understood we need to drag the list box to a maximum size to view the contents.
    But, this seems an additional task, i know this is a limitation in the current version of SSRS and hope it will be resolved in the next versions.
    Thanks for your efforts,

    here is the issue
        " how to change the width of the column in web templete?" is there any chance  to change
    thanx in advance

    First use the Active Cell property and set the row value to -2 to change an entire column. The attached image shows how to set the background color of column 3 to green. I don't understand your comment about column size. It doesn't matter how wide or narrow a column is. Using the Cell Background Color property, the entire cell is colored. If you are having difficulty keeping track of the number of columns, thats a different issue.

  • How can I increase the width of the 'mail composer' box and put the attachment box (at present on the right) below it?

    The width of the 'mail composer' box is too narrow so that with my email program half the buttons are missing.
    == All the time

    Thanks for your swift response.
    I understand the difference between the web browser and email program.
    I have just started using Firefox from IE and IE displayed the new mail page full width.
    Firefox displays the reading web page full width but not the compose mail page because of the layout with the attachment box to the right of the box where you write your mail.
    I was hoping that there was a way to customise and change the layout.
    Is that possible?

  • Need to fix the width of a column in interactive report

    Hi,
    I have a column named 'Comment'. Its have a huge data due to which the lenght of that column in interactive report get increased. I need to fix the length to a desired value.
    I used following code in Region Footer:
    <style>
    table.apexir_WORKSHEET_DATA td[headers=COMMENTS] {
      _width: 300px;
      min-width: 50px;
      max-width: 300px }
    </style>
    Its solved the problem by fixing the width of the column but the column is not showing the full data now. It is hiding most of its part to fit it in that column.
    Please give some idea.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    I believe you will want to add a height specification to allow for multiple lines.  And you may want/need to specifiy how you want lines to wrap.
    Add (for example):
      height: 60px;
      white-space: nowrap;
      word-wrap: break-word;
    There are defaults and several options for white-space and word-wrap.  You may want to look them up and give them a try for comparison.

  • Adjust the width of a column in a report.

    Hi,
    How can we adjust the width of a column in a report.
    We have a report with around 10 columns.
    out of the 10 columns 1 column has a width of 500 char..
    we want to display only the first 150 chars of that column with 50 char on first line,next 50 on second line and last 50 on third line.
    i have tried using the the substr and <br> in the region source but it takes 3 lines by default even if it is not of 150 chars .I want to display it in 3 columns if it of 100+ chars.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Using the col tag is the more proper way of fixing the width of a column.
    If you don't want to use the col tag, you should change your expression to:
    &lt;table style="width:500px"&gt;
    Firstly, you should use the unit of length (ie, "px") for any non-zero value and secondly because we are being encouraged to use the style attribute whenever possible as, as I understand it, this will become the standard.

  • How to change the width of the whole portlet layout?

    Dear all,
    As we know, now the width of portlet layout has set to 100%. But there is a new requirment from my customer that the width of the whole portlet layout view must be set to 750px.
    So I tried to edit the css file and I found a block:
    #pt-portal-content-view
         margin-top: 0px;
         width: 100%;
    I tried to change the width to 750px, but nothing happened.
    I want to know the way to change the width, thank you all!
    Regards,
    finall
    OK,I have found the place to do it:
    .portalContent          {
         display: block;
         width: 750px;
    I set to 750px,then it works.:-)
    But another question, how to make the content align to the center? I tried a stupid method, add margin-left:
    .portalContent          {
         display: block;
         width: 750px;
         margin-left: 120px;
    In 1024 X 768, it's ok, but it don't work well in 800 X 600.
    When I set the all content width to 750px, I tried the three columns view, the portlet still run over the border.If there is any way to control this? thank u in advance!
    Regards,
    finall
    Edited by finall1980 at 02/01/2007 10:09 PM

    Try this:
    .portalContent {
    display: block;
    width: 750px;
    margin: auto; /* for properly-implemented browsers */
    text-align: center; /* for IE 6 */
    As for running over the 750px, there's nothing you can do about that other than actually narrowing the columns AND making sure that your portlet authors don't produce content that's too wide.
