IMac 10.6.8 Build 10K549: Reinstalling OS or use as external monitor

I have an iMac 10.6.8 and I would like to reformat the harddrive and reinstall OS without the installation disk. I would like to do this, and use it as an external monitor so I have 2 issues.
1. I only have 1 GB of RAM, so I cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8. But if I could, can I open OS X Utilities by restarting the computer and holding option or Command & R. I'm not sure if this is possible.
2. To use it as an secondary monitor: Can I use Air Display after purchasing the client app on my iMac? I'm not sure if this can be done on devices besides iPads, iPhones, etc. Or is my best option to buy a mini display port to HDMI adaptor, HDMI cable, and a HDMI to thunderbolt adaptor?
Any advice or input would be greatly appreciate. Thank you in advance for your time!

1, You can reinstall without a disk if you first clone your entire system to an external drive using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper - you can then boot from the external and erase your internal and clone it back.
Command + R will not work on 10.6.8. That was introduced in Lion, but it only works with certain older machines because the needed firmware is only compatible with certain models.
EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs
You would also need to add RAM - 2 GB really is not enough, it will result in a sluggish performance; Lion and later should have a minimum of 4 GB.
2. Can't help with that except to say that an older machine will most likely not support Air Display.

  • Stop the iMac screen while using an external monitor.

I succeeded to play an .avi file in full screen on my 32" samsung lcd...but i would like to stop the iMac monitor while watching the avi. If i choose to stop the iMac monitor also the tv screen became black, and also if i start a screensaver on the iMac this will also appear on the lcd tv evenif i set up the external monitor as an extension of the desktop and not as a duplicate. There's a solution?
Tnx for the answers and sorry for my poor english

That one as well will dim both displays.
I have played around with this off and on for over a year now. The best that I have come up with is in this [Apple Discussion Thread|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5587803#5587803]
Sense then I have also found a way to dim the menu bar, but it was a little buggy to use all the time called [MenuShade|http://macapper.com/2007/10/17/menushade-dim-your-menu-bar>
Simply hide everything on the desktop as best you can and use a black desktop or photo image.

  • How do I use an external Monitor to access files on my iMac with a broken screen?

I have an 20 inch desktop iMac with a broken screen. It is the files on the computer that I wish to recover, after that, I can be on my merry way. Unfortunately, VileVault was on (Not my choice), and for some reason, when I target the disc image of the broken mac with a new one, ONE of the accounts "appears" to be completely empty. All of the accouts were running FileVault, but only one (mine) failed to be transferred because it is "empty". I refuse to believe that my files are actually all gone, because theoretically there should be nothing wrong with the CPU itself, just the screen.
Thus my goal is to use a monitor on my broken screen iMac and simply log in and access my files normally, and perhaps pull them out with a USB or something. I have a DELL monitor, and a DVI (The big hairy plug with screws I think) converter that works with my old iMac, along with the male/male DVI cord. However, when I hook it up, nothing happens. I have tried booting the old CPU while holding F7, and option as I read on a forum, and neither produced results.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to 1. Get the monitor to simply show what's going on on the mac? or 2. Pull out my files through some other means?
    Thank you.

If you have a second Mac computer, you may want to try to copy over as many files you can. One way is to use target disk mode.

  • How do I use an external monitor with 21.5 inch iMac?

I have a brand new 21.5 inch iMac and am trying to hook it up with an older 20 inch Mac cinema via Thunderport. Do I need a special cable. I saw none at my local Apple store. or will it work at all?

Use a Mini DisplayPort adapter for that monitor type.

  • Can iMac be used as external monitor for old Mac Mini?

I just bought a used Mac Mini PPC 1.4GHZ, 1GB Ram, 80GB HD. It will be shipped to my parents out of state but until then I need to configure it at home. Can I connect it to my iMac 20"?
In other words, is there any way to turn off the direct connect of the iMac's internal workings to the screen and have the screen used temporarily by a different computer?

Although you can "remote control" any Mac from your iMac20" through a network connection (using Screen Sharing in Leopard, or free VNC software in earlier OSX releases), you will need a real monitor to do the initial set up of the Mini - including the steps necessary to activate screen sharing.
The only iMac that had any video input ability was the original CRT Bondi blue iMac from many years ago. Your iMac has video output, but no video input.

  • Can i use my 21.5" imac as an external monitor for my macbook pro?

I have a 21.5" iMac (with Intel processor) that I'm trying to use an external monitor for a new Macbook Pro.  Both machines have a thunderbolt input.  I bought a Belkin mini displayport to mini displayport connector, but my macbook is not displaying on the iMac.  I saw videos online showing this done with the 27" iMac, saying you just needed to press Command+F2, but that is not working for me.  I can't seem to find any posts confiming if I can use my 21.5" iMac this way though.

  • IMac 27" flashes to white on startup, chimes, then goes to a black screen. It works fine on an external monitor. Any ideas how I can fix this?

I've got a late 2009 iMac 27". When I start it up, it chimes and makes all the normal sounds. The screen flashes white for 2 seconds, then goes black. The iMac starts up (if I use an external monitor, it works fine) but the screen remains black.
Weirdly, if I start it up on Bootcamp as a Windows machine, it flashes white, then flashes briefly a few seconds later on the Windows logo, then goes to black.
I've reformatted the hard drive and performed a clean install of Lion. I've got some Apple knowledge, so I've taken the front bezel off and checked for loose connections. Everything appears fine. All 4 diagnostic lights are on on the logic board.
I'm stumped. I don't want to splash out on a new LCD screen if it's the inverter or something else that's the problem
    Any ideas welcome!

Ah. I'm not able to run the hardware test because it only works on the main screen. There's no obvious way to switch to an external monitor when AHT is running, which is ridiculous if the hardware fault concerns the screen! The problem isn't with the backlight - there is no dimmed image on the screen, it is just off.
I'll just have to use it with an external monitor, I guess - which defeats the purpose of buying an iMac!
    Thanks for your help, though.

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks

  • Late 2009 imac with dead LCD; external monitor?

    Hello, all
I need some help.  The LCD on my late 2009 iMac has failed.  I took it into the Apple Store and they told me it was dead and it would be $500+ to replace it, which I do not have.
The machine is intact, however, other than that!  The Apple Store rep even told me that they tried it with an external monitor, to validate that the video card is working, and it worked fine.  Great news!
My question, however, is how do I get it to boot to an external monitor?
I have booted the mac in target disk mode, booted from that target disk on another mac, and changed the settings so that the display is mirrored onto a second monitor.  When I boot into the iMac, however, I get the Apple Logo and the "white screen of death" and the machine never finishes loading using the external monitor.  I need to know if there is some way to force it to use that monitor for the primary display.
Cheers all, and thanks for any help!

    Hello,
I'm wondering if boting from it's drive on the oother Mac didn't write some of the other Mac's Monitor info to it?
Instead of Mirroring, what if you make the external monitor the main one by dragging the Dock to it?
If you can ever get it to boot, this thread may be helpful if you want mirroing...

  • Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 build 10K549

    Hi,
My first question is how do you tell the flavor of mac os from the build e.g.snow leopard, lion, maverick etc ? The kernel build in system profiler says Darwin, is that what determines the flavor ?
My actual problem is apple tv icon is not showing on the task bar. However, apple tv is working fine with iTunes ?
I have mid 2009 Mac Book Pro Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 build 10K549 fully updated as reported by OS update utility in the 'About Mac' option. Any suggestions ?

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space

It's not Logic that can't find them, it's your Komplete apps, though if you did exaclty as you say I can see no reason why they can't.
Do you know where the apps installed them in the first place? I chose a non-standard locarion for mine, but I'm sure it installs sounds to your documents folder/native instruments/name of app.
Go into the prefs of each app and choose the library location button on the library tab and point it to the relevant folder in documents/native instruments and see if that works
