InDesign for wireframing websites?

Do any of you use InDesign for wireframing websites? I need to create a wireframe for a site. I was all prepared to do it in Fireworks. Fireworks has some fantastic features, but I need better PDFs than what it can export. (I tried every setting I could think of but PDFs created from my wireframes always looked fuzzy -- I guess Fireworks can't export vector into a PDF.) So next up: I was considering Illustrator. Then, I saw something on InDesign Secrets about how some folks use InDesign for wireframing. And I do know InDesign better than Illustrator. So wondering if I should try it that way. Do any of you use InDesign for that purpose? If not, got any recommendations for software for wireframing (something that will give me better PDFs than Fireworks)?

So recently I've created a REALLY basic wireframe using InDesign. I basically created the visual direction so my client could easily understand how the Web site would flow. In other words, boxes with page names and lines connecting them. It can be really simple if all you're trying to do is show the site's direction.
From there, we will create the in-depth visual layout for the splash page, home page and a global page (This is where I utilize Photoshop/Fireworks/Illustrator or Flash). This is where we will dive into color schemes, and layout schematics. In our case, this a site where we have no logo established, but have the overall concept in place, so that's why we haven't decided on an overall theme just yet. Still working out the kinks!!

If you're looking for the page curl that's a SWF feature. The SWF file can easily be placed into any webpage.

What benefits does Creative Cloud have for small websites?

I'm interested in Creative Cloud, but after looking through the information on the Adobe website it seems to be more for larger companies and websites. I currently run a small website helping organisations to register as charities (http://www.charityexpert.net/) and I'm trying to decide if this could be of use to me or not.

It honestly depends. Size is not the issue, in NYC though they will pretend its not so small to medium "agencies" can be groups of 2 to 5 people, with a few as 1 to 3 of them doing any design work at all.
That being said its really about what services you want to offer your clients as a vendor. Charaties can have a lot of needs in getting established, a website being only a small peice of that puzzle. A single individual with the right skills or experience can handle most or all of this for them however.
If you are a good designer and have an understanding of presentation, then learning the applications is the simple part, and Creative Cloud versions of the software keep similar interfaces and shortcut keys. What this means is that there is little work in simply learning how to execute a basic task, it is as easy as looking up a tutorial on Youtube.
You can leverage this to offer the following:
Create Logos - Adobe Illustrator
Create Print Marketing Collateral like Brochures and Business Cards- Adobe Photoshop & InDesign
Create simply websites that work on all devices. > Adobe Muse
Create graphics for online Social Networking Sites > Adobe Photoshop
Create basic Video presentations > Adobe Premiere
Create audio public service announcements > Adobe Audition w/ Stock Audio backgrounds from AudioJungle or iStock Audio
Create simple animated intros for youtube or video presentations > Adobe After Effects

At $50/month to have the capability to do any of these potential projects for multiple clients (none of which you should be charging less than $150 for), you have nearly unlimtied potential and very few restrictions. Your overhead even with stock purchases would be minimal and it may even motivate you to be more aggressive since you'd have this recurring expense.
So in my opinion for the market your client base exist in, its a matter of how much you want to offer and how deep you want to client relationship to go. There is no reason you could not be an Army of One for you customers with this setup in mind.

Preparing images for Dreamweaver cs3, using InDesign for templates

Hi, I'm about to start putting all my files together for my
website, but need to know in what form to save my images. I know
they should be jpegs or gifs, but what resolution, and what size?
Should I size them close to the size I want to see them on my
website? For example if I want to make a little linked (like a
thumbnail that you click on) image of a painting, and have the full
size image of that painting open up, should I save that image in
two different sizes?
Also, the tutorial I'm learning from says I can make a
template for use in Dreamweaver, with Photoshop or Illustrator, but
I'd rather use InDesign. Can I use InDesign files as templates in
Dreamweaver? If so, in what form should I save them?

it won't be of any practical use, except to print out and use
as a guide.
on the images, make them the PIXEL size they need to be in
the web page.
If you aren't sure yet what exact size they will be, make
them a bit
oversize. Then after changing the html display size of them
in dreamweaver
(click on the image, then press shift key and drag corner of
image to
resize) you can jot down the pixel size shown in the dw
properties
inspector, and resize the image in an image editor to those
pixel
dimensions. For a resolution, just use 72 ppi as a number to
put there.
It's the pixel dimension that matters.

ID CS5 for designing websites?

Hi there all you helpful people!
I have asked this question before - but it was a while ago and I wondered if things had changed for anyone.
Is anyone using IDCS5 for designing/prototyping websites?
I am a print and web designer and use ID for all my print work and FW for all my web work.
Increasingly I am getting more and more frustrated with FW - so many simple things that it does sooooooo badly compared to ID.
Now that IDCS5 has the ability to design in pixels there is the option to design websites in ID, however, it will not export to png format and I know that will make it hard for our coders to use.
Does anybody have any experiences of using it to design websites and if you do, what workflow do you use?

In my experience, you will have great difficulty exporting everything your coder/developer requires from InDesign. Once designed, typically your developer will need individual images for each section and hex color codes - both of which are not easy to get from InDesign alone.
I have used InDesign for 'Prototyping' a website but more for the functionality and to show several pages but the design was 100% done in Photoshop. Basically I exported a JPEG from PS of every page in the website that is different and then imported that into InD - one JPEG per page. I then overlayed buttons on top to show the menu working and when clicked, navigated to those pages via InD buttons "Go to Page" function. The buttons themselves can have a gradient overlay so it looks like they are being hovered over. It gave a rather simple example of how the website would finally function and was saved as a PDF so all reviewers could see it.
InDesign was also used for the style guide which was then sent to the developer, which included all hex codes, text styles and dimensions.

How do I use an Edge Animate project with SVG files in InDesign for DPS output?

Is there any way to include an Edge Animate web content using .svg files in InDesign for output to DPS?
Edge Animate works great with InDesign, except for when you're using SVG files. I've worked with SVG files on the web successfully (writing .htaccess files and such), but it seems like InDesign doesn't like them.
This is pretty important because I don't want to have to design multiple renditions on the DPS suite. Currently I have it setup as a PDF format (DPS) and that scales all of the vector-based type perfectly. It would be wonderful if the animations could also be in a vector format so that when the iPad (3) users see the designs, they will scale naturally through the PDF framework.
Any advice would be invaluable.

You can do this using a meta refresh but the problem is you have to add it to the html file for the page very time you publish changes.
A better way is to create a splash page and upload it to the server outside of the folder produced by iWeb. Example HERE.
The meta refresh is added to the head section of the html file...

The delay time in seconds is marked in blue and the URL to the redirect page is in red.

How to configure httpd.conf for multiple websites on one webserver

So, right now I have my primary website on a pay-for domain. A friend of mine wants a website and I want to host his and my sites on the same server. For his website, I'll use a DynDNS address.
So, pretty much, I want to be able to go to my domain and get my site and go to his domain and get his site. I've spent hours trying to get VirtualHosts to work, but haven't gotten it to work yet.
PS. In Apache, I have User set to Administrator (my user name).

First, set the user back to www or whatever it was. To do namebased virtual hosting, you'll need to change two things. The first is to add a NameVirtualHost directive to /etc/httpd/sites/virtualhostglobal.conf
This is one of the VirtualHost stanzas from my Linux box, you just have to adjust the paths for your machine:

ServerAlias mydomain.com
ServerAdmin [email protected]
DocumentRoot /usr/people/httpd/html/www

How can I implement my vision for my website?

Hello, I'm having a lot of trouble reaching my goals for my website using Muse. I do love Muse, it's allowed me to lauch pozzswim.ca and get some content up which I would have never been able to do before having no coding knowledge, but it's is only about 30% as functional as I want it to be.
My vision:
There are 2 sections to my site which the current version of muse would make very difficult to do: a blog and a news page. I want these two things streamlined and hassle free so I can upload new content on the fly as it happens no matter where I am.
If a user were to navigate to my /video-blog.html page what I want them to see is a neat, chronologically organized view of the blogs I've done with a breif description and a thumbnail. Clicking on the blog title/thumbnail/description will take the user to a new page with the full blog and the video from youtube I've uploaded for it plus a section for comments using livefyre and links to other blogs. There will also be a headline on my homepage with the most recent 2 or 3 blogs I've done.
If a user were to navigate to my /news.html page they would see a well organized chronolgical view of all my news items. My news items are usually short updates and links and won't require their own pages but will need to be formatted in an easy to digest way. I would also have a headline on the homepage for the most recent news items.
The homepage headlines should update automatically as I post things, and blog pages and news articles should be able to be created without me having to do everything manually in Muse.
Implementation:
I'm sure this is possible, but how can I do this and still use Muse to design my site? I know it requires a content management system, but how can I integrate one into the static content created by Muse? Options I've looked into are wordpress, joomla, and business catalyst but how do I use those with what I already have?
I could just create a pure wordpress site, but that would mean leaving Muse and the design freedom it gives me and learning a whole new system which I wouldn't have time for. Business Catalyst I wouldn't be too thrilled about as I would have to pay 3 times the hosting cost to get their blogging features plus I would have to migrate and I like my current host.
So how can I do this?

Help, how do i find out the host server for a website i have inherited

hi i inherited responcibilty for a website, simply because
there was noone else avalable. i have dreamweaver cs3, but only
about 2 weeks worth of knowledge and experience. I was given info
ie. ftp address and username etc, so have been able to download the
website to my home computer, and have been making updates, now
however i need to find out more about setting up a test server so i
can use dynamic pages, specifically for collecting form
information, collecting donations and selling art work. i will need
some information from the host server to start with, but am unsure
as how to identify and contact them, can anyone help me please. I
am sure it is rudimentary, but the information is essential.
also as a side note, could anyone tell me how to find out
where the websites domain name is regestered ( other than
contacting the original designer, as that seem quite impossible)
because i get the feeling that if all else fails i may be able to
move the website to another host ( not that i now how yet, or even
how to select or find a host) please let me know if any of my
assumptions are wrong.

Hi,
To find out about the host, go to register.com and look up
the domain name.
When it gives you results, it'll say that the name is already
taken, but it
will let you do a 'whois' on it.
Those results can give you some info such as the server DNS.
That may let
you figure out the host.
Sometimes the technical contact in the whois, is the host as
well.
