Installing a newer version of iOS on an older touch

I have an older touch and apps will not install complaining they want a newer version of IOS
my old touch is 16 GB so there is some room for more software
it comes with iOS 2.2.1 and I see no reason it cannot be upgraded to a newer version of iOS

All new apps created with Apple's latest SDK require devices to be running iOS 4.3 or greater. It is no longer possible to create apps that are compatible with 1st or 2nd generation iPod touch (or the iPhone or iPhone 3G). You'll see on the App Store that all the nw apps being submitted and updated require iOS 4.3 or greater.
If you really want to continue receiving app updates then you should consider selling that iPod touch and getting a newer one. Complaining to developers who are no longer able to make apps for your underpowered 5-year old iPod touch will prove fruitless.
