IRQ and SATA HD problems hangs computer
I tried installing AL 0.7 on my desktop. It has a Asus a7n8x-deluxe motherboard with one IDE HD and one SATA HD. It uses the Silicon Image chip for SATA. During the installation boot up process, the kernel detects the SATA drive but it later hangs when sending some commands to it and I have to reboot the computer by turning the power off then on.
I read a couple of other threads and have come to understand that I have to recompile the kernel. I'm new at linux so, what options should I enable or disable when compiling the kernel? Booting with arch-noscsi bypasses the problem but, I can't mount the sata drive.
I have a Maxtor 6 Y120M0 SATA drive but, I don't think it's the drive that's giving me a problem when installing AL 0.7. I booted up with AL 0.6 install cd and same problem occurs but, it doesn't hang like in 0.7. Here are some of the things that occur when booting up AL 0.6
1. Kernel recognizes SATA drive that uses Silicon Image chipset.
2. IRQ 11 is disabled (don't know exactly why). This occurs in 0.7 and 0.6.
3. The kernel tries scanning hdg.
Scanning hdg takes some time. At this point, in AL 0.6 it does this 2x and because it can't find anything gives up and continues with boot up process. I believe that scanning of hdg also occurs in AL 0.7 but, instead of giving up and continuing with boot up it hangs.
Are there some kernel options I can pass at boot up to disable scanning of hdg? Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this problem? I don't want to stick with AL 0.6 b/c I'm afraid same problem will occur when kernel is upgraded when I send comman pacman -Syu.

Problem:
The HD light will stay on and the system will hang randomly.
I've had nothing but trouble with this system. I originally thought that the Maxtor was faulty, so I got that replaced. Unfortunately, I still have the same problem.
My current onboard IDE config is as follows:
On chip ATA(s) - Native Mode
ATA configuration - S-ATA only
P-ATA keep enabled - Yes
P-ATA Channel Selection - Both
S-ATA Ports definition - P0-1ST / P1-2nd
I have, however, tried all possible combinations. Also enabled in BIOS is "APIC ACPI SCI IRQ", which seemed to decrease the frequency of hangs once enabled. The drive will hang the system anywhere - after saving settings and exiting BIOS, during POST, on boot or in Windows.
Is anyone else having this problem and is there a way to remedy it? If not, is this problem DRIVE or BOARD specific? Will there be a BIOS update to fix this issue?
The easiest way to reproduce this is to run 3DMark 2001 SE once in Windows - it doesn't take long for the drive to hang the system.

From a personal point of view I'd like to say that I do not think the PSU is to blame. Having had the drive replaced once I am now sending the new one back to the distributor again. The distributor says that they will again test the drive on another 865 chipset, which should ultimately determine whether or not there is a compatibility issue between Maxtor & the MSI board and/or ICH5. I'm getting it swapped for the Seagate 120gb SATA model which will hopefully solve my problems, but I'll keep you posted!

That is incorrect. I'm sorry that I did not clarify, but what I was referring to was voltage and NOT amps. I had posted the amps for each rail a little earlier, the +12V being rated 13amps.

I think there really is a need, , but hopefully we'll know soon.
(In fact, this is probably costing Maxtor quite a bit, seeing as distributors are forced to replace drives which may be perfectly OK... My distributor is using the "Powermax" utility from Maxtor to test for faulty drives, and both the drives I've tried now failed each and every test when I ran Powermax.)

I have played with various BIOS settings - without any results.
My CPU is not HT enabled and it is 533 FSB. Also, my board doesn't have the integrated promise chipset, so no I did not enable that nor did I install any drivers for that. I did, however, install the Intel chipset drivers. Unfortunately it's all irrelevant anyway since the drive locks up out of Windows as well .

K8N nForce 4 (CK804) and SATA drive problems

I have a K8N Neo MB with a 4 port sata and RAID. It seems that it is not stable with sata drives at all.
I had at first 2 120G SEAGATE drives. I kept getting random hangups from windows AND linux. I thought it was a problem with one of the drives to I booted with one of them at a time and worked a bit... it seemed the problem went away.
but later, after a week or so, it seems everything comes back again. same problems with freezes and hangups.
when windows for example freezes, and i press reset. at the boot screen, the POST would hang up at the step which detects the SATA drives. it would stay like this foreever.
I would have to totally shut down power for a few seconds and boot again.
I tried working with pata drives and its totally great and stable. no problems. if i install a sata drive with the pata, i get the same hangup problems.
i bought another seagate 80gb sata drive just to make sure that the older 120gb were not a problem. it worked for me fine a t first, but started to do exactly the same afterwards
i tried to access the drive from linux in order to trace the access pattern of the drive and get a sense of what was going wrong. Here is the syslog from the kernel messages.
any help with that issue is highly appreciated. thanks

Firefox and PDF download problems -- hanging and failures
I am working in Windows XP and Firefox 12.0.
We post our multi-page newsletter to our website in PDF, and then use a list to send a link to access it. When attempting to download using Firefox, the document will download all or part of the first page, and then hang -- sometimes in perpetuity, and sometimes with infinitesimally slow progress.
It works just fine in Google Chrome.
I tried disabling all of my plug-ins, including Adobe Acrobat (9.5.1.283). I left them all disabled, but re-enabled Adobe. No joy.
I disabled Adobe and tried a straight-up download, then open with my local reader. No joy.
What is going on, and how can I fix it?
My Acrobat 9 Standard is 9.5.1 that I'm using to create the document in the first place.
What can I do to fix MY system to get it to download and, more importantly, what information can I give our members to use so that they can successfully download it?I personally open PDFs in the stand-alone Adobe Reader rather than in the browser, but everyone has their own preference.
Have you experimented with Firefox's application tab settings?

In the search box on that tab, type pdf and pause for the list to be filtered. You should be able to toggle between viewing the PDF in the browser or launching it externally. I have mine set to "Always Ask."
Generally speaking, when you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
If you host the PDFs on a site you can't actually visit, access the View Cookies dialog from this page and change the host name at the top of the box to the correct host name to access the relevant cookies.
Then try downloading again. Does that help? -
my 2009 macbookpro has begun running very slowly, apps freeze and pages hang ... i've run EtreCheck and there are problems but don't know how to sort ... ran CleanMyMac and freed up about 30GB of space but didn't help ... ran AdwareMedic so that's been sorted but the other issues that came up on the EtreCheck I need help with however i can't figure out how to paste the results on this page

Problem with NEO2 and sata controller card

Hello. I have a strange problem with my controllercard. I wrote this text to InnoVision suport and they send me files and bios updates for a whole week and it was still the same problem. And then i tried the card in an older computer and everything worked fine.

It's still the same problem in my computer. The older computer had a MSI moderboard with a VIA chip and i have a nForce 3. InnoVison said i should talk to you about this problem. I have 3 harddrives but i use this controllercard because i want to have my computer overclocked and then i can't use 2 of the sata ports as i think you know.
I would be very thankful if you could help me with this problem.

Think you may try with a disk lower than 48bitLBA need (137GB barrier), eg a 120GB disk

Btw: I looked at innovision and their drivers in download area are very old.
Get the latest SIL3112 drivers for XP here:

And remember 3112 is sata150 only , so it's not sure it will work with your drive at all .
Anyway it should be set to fixed sata1.5G with jumper - not certain the controller can autonegotiate
without trouble. You cannot have command queing enabled either , disk support only NCQ and controller TCQ
so having command queing set ON will cause major conflicts in data transfers. -
Boot problems with IDE HD and SATA HD on K7N2-Delta L
I'll get right to the point.
I have an PCI SATA Controller Card in my system (using a K7N2 Delta-L motherboard, BIOS v5.7 with an Athlon XP 2800+ and Corsair ValueSelect 512MB DDR400 RAM on a single stick). My system works fine in it's original configuration of drives (CD-RW drive only drive on IDE bus, and SATA drive only hard drive). However, upon installing my IDE hard drive from my old computer, the system will no longer boot right. I am connecting the other IDE HD as Slave on the CD-RW's bus, as I'm reserving the second bus for bigger and better things such as a DVD burner, and speed isn't too important for this hard drive as it's just my MP3/data I don't need in a hurry drive.
In the current configuration, all three drives are detected properly (CD-RW and HD detected on the IDE detection screen, and the SATA drive detected on the SATA card's detection screen). However, after the SATA detection screen, the system just stops. The cursor is still blinking, but nothing comes up.
Both hard drives are Western Digitals (IDE is a ATA100 Western Digital 60GB at 5400 RPM, and the SATA is a Western Digital 36.7GB at 10,000 RPM), and the CD-RW is a HP CD-Writer 9100. I have Windows XP installed on both hard drives (first partition of the IDE, which is divided into two), but considering the system doesn't even attempt to boot I don't think that's an issue. I've gone through and tried enabling and disabling "Boot Other Device", but still no love. My boot order is set to Floppy, CD-ROM, and SCSI, which works fine when the SATA drive is in there.
Any idea what's up? I can provide more information upon request, as I'm sure there's something I forgot to mention that's important.
Thanks.Take a look at this link, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=71384, I think you both have the same problem. It seems that a sata drive doesn't like having an ide drive in the system that has an active partition.
Do like Wonkanoby suggest, reformat the ide hard drive and make sure that it's not set to be the active partition in the system. Boot with a 98 boot floppy if you have to so you can format the ide drive to fat32, once you can boot up using the sata drive you can use xp disk manager to convert the ide drive to ntfs. -
Problem description:
Computer takes a long time to fire up. Spinning ball is seen during start up, sometimes when login dialog box, and sometimes after entering login password. My mac freeze often, especially when using Lightroom…. Help is much appreciated!

iPad IOS 7.0.2 and Mountain Lion 10.8.5 Calendar colors do not match between computer and device. Problem did not exist until updated IOS arrived. Colours change of their own free will despite being corrected on both iPAD and MacBook Pro. Any answers?

Go to your hard drive, enter library, go into users, and go into launch agents and delete the thing above. Empty the trash and restart. -
Itunes asking me my billing verification again and again on the same computer. I don't know why it behave like this. Anyone can solve my problem?

1) Open iTunes and sign in to the iTunes Store.
2) Select "View My Account" from the Store menu.
3) Enter your password and click the View Account button.
4) Click the Edit Payment Information button.

6) Click the Done button at the bottom of the page.

After you are able to download the free App try updating the billing information as usual. -
My wife had an iPad for a year and synced to our computer with no problem. I recently received an ipad2 and when I tried to sync using separate apple and iTunes passwords, under her computer user name, it appears I over-road her account and synced all her apps with my apps on my iPad. I then set myself up as a new user on our computer and tried to sync. I now get the error that my iPad is synced to another library. How can I start over without erasing all my data on the iPad?
Go back to her login. Unless you deliberately erased apps, they should all be there, both yours and hers! Then, you need to set up each iPad separately. You will notice that they have separate names for that very purpose.
There is no problem with multiple Apple IDs on the same iTunes on the same computer except... Apps are permanently associated with the ID that was originally used to obtain them. If you choose to update an app from inside iTunes and you're logged into the "wrong" ID, you must log out and back in again.
On the bright side, you can configure either or both iPads to sync with apps and music and movies, etc. from either or both IDs. Further, if you choose to update the apps from the iPads themselves, there is no need to log out/in. The device handles that. All you need is the correct password. In my case, I use the same password for both IDs to make things easier. -
Computer AND iTunes don't recognize my iPod touch. Comp thinks it is a camera or something. iTunes won't bring up devices at all. I've already uninstalled iTunes and QT and reinstalled after problem that happened when I updated iTunes - updated iTunes completely demolished my computer's ability to recognize the sound card and computer had NO sound at all. I had to uninstall iTunes, QT, AND my sound card and reinstall them all. Sound worked fine, but now I can't sync my iPod. Computer recognizes that "something" is hooked up (thinks it might possibly be a camera) and I get that "open with" window. In "my computer" it shows that there is an "iPod" connected, but it is pictured as a camera. In iTunes my username is no longer appearing (although account info is there) and NO devices whatsoever get listed. There is nothing wrong with my USB ports or cable. And of course Apple won't help anyone unless you pay them to. ... I am getting beyond P/Oed!!! You pay hundreds for a product and all you get are headaches with their stupid bug infested software and no support at all.
Can anyone out there help me clean up this unbelievable mess Apple and iTunes has created in my computer?

EvieAfter three completely wasted days trying to figure all of this out I finally got it fixed - on my own - by reading dozens and dozens of rogue posts in indie forums from people that refuse to dish out money to have a company TRY and advise possible fixes on their own glitches.
(here's a novel idea - fix the glitches Apple. Or - don't send out updates filled with bugs in the first place)
Everything (several applications) had to be uninstalled in a very specific order and then restarted , then it all had to be verified with manual deletions of leftovers, and emptying the recycle bin, then another restart, then iT had to be reinstalled again and the system restarted again, and two more update downloads. Holy!!!
I love my little iPod touch, but I honestly must say, when this kind of thing happens (and it has several times now when I try to deal with iTunes or Apple), it makes me want to flush it down the toilet. -
My Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, had hard drive failure so I had to borrow a friends similar machine to access my iPhoto library ( 523 GB) on a 1TB drive after editing the photos and after exporting one folder of images the program quit and then asked me to repair which I tried hung up at 99% and would not open the event thumbnails . I have tried everything even trying to transfer the particular event from that library to a new library using iphoto manager just so I can export my project and send but still no success as it is telling me that it is getting no info from the library, I changed permissions on the drive ..still no success . I restarted Iphoto and it took hours to show the images but all events thumnails said "0" and it shows all the event cover photos as a gray photo with a palm tree in it or something . I tried rebuilding again this morning and the new library says "0" photos and a library size of 7.3 mb
I got my own Macbook 17in back yesterday and downloaded Mountain Lion to my machine and Iphoto 9.3
I tried to open the library which is 523 GB of images that used to work fine before getting an error message saying it needed to be repaired. I tried opening it with Iphoto 9.3 via I photo manager which told be that there were inconsistencies in the library and it needed to be repaired I chose that option and it is now the following day still "rebuilding thumbnails" since last night . This is a huge problem I have missed project deadlines and my income is severely affected by this situation of not being able to access my work. What can I do to fix this, access my files and export my overdue project at this point ?Terence I find it surprising that you would say use Iphoto Manager after saying that I used it to rebuild using it took me to 99% of the way and just hung. I even spent my $20 and got the latest version 3.8.3 which was supposed to remedy these issues. See below my email to Fat Cat software the makers of Iphoto Manager:

asks you to rebuild or repair the library then IPLM stops at 99% leaving

Its days later and the support at Fat Cat software emailed me asking a question and are apparently just as floored as I am with this malfunction ..I hope they are working feverishly to address this as my conclusion and solution is as follows :
Using the older version of Iphoto Library Manager when my machine asked me to upgrade and rebuild instead of the first aid function in Iphoto 9.3 did not help but actually corrupted my library and downloading the latest version did not help remedy it either. What I should have done and am now doing is using the Iphoto first Aid function in Mountain Lion and Iphoto 9.3 using option command to rebuild the entire library. So far it is working with no hangups ...it is now rebuilding image version number 6715 and counting with 33000+ images to go ..if this solution really rebuilds then that is the ONLY way to go with this issue which has cost me a lot of time and money in missed deadlines , lost income and lost business . Iphoto and Iphoto Library manager are normally great in what their purposes are and in ease of use and function but whenawry with compatibility in version software issues arise things go terribly awry and the tedious painstaking fixes available that go for days on end just do not cut it. -
