Macbook Pro 2.5 loose key

I just bought a new MBP over the weekend and I noticed that the brightness key (to make it go down) is a bit loose and not perfectly aligned. What should I do? Can it be fixed quickly in the store?

I would take it back right away.
If you check out www.ifixit.com, you will see that the keyboard is that hardest thing to replace in the new MacBook Pros. Furthermore, Apple has decided to make the keyboard and the unibody case a single replaceable part, which means that one broken key would cause the need to have the entire upper case replaced. Such a repair would prove costly and time consuming.
I would take it back for a new one, which I would examine in store.

PS:
I have assumed that your key has been broken. It may not have been. Check out other MacBook Pros at the Apple Store. If you see that there is a definite difference, then I would proceed, as I have suggested. I would prefer to have a new MacBook Pro instead of one that needs a new unibody case.

If it is within the warranty period, take it in to an Apple store genius bar for repair.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

John, please refrain from posting your personal email in these threads.  It is not necesary and all communication to you can be done directly in these forums.  Posting your email address can open up you to tons of unwanted spam, among other things.  Really all you can do is search the internet for them.  My suggestion would be to google "case for late 2007 macbook pro".
One will probably be very hard to find for a 6 year old model as it is on the borderline of being considered "vintage".  Ebay may be a good place to try too.

    Hi Tracy,
I'm guessing "ash" is the silver colored keyboard, the same color as the rest of the MBP? If so, that machine, with the optical drive slot on the front, is the older machine.

  • Will playing excessive need for speed  games on my macbook pro damage the arrow keys(i play using them) ??

hey guyz i wanted to ask whether playing excessive (1-2 hours daily) need for speed carbon on my macbook pro using the arrow keys to control the car damage the arrow keys of the MBP??
pls answer asap i am worried..

I don't think that you have to worry about arrow keys because they won't damage with their use (unless you hit heavily these keys). Using games, there are other things to worry, as the temperature of the Mac, but fans will turn on automatically when your Mac needs

  • Macbook pro 13inch,mid2010 qwertyu keys don't work after upgrade os x Yosemite

macbook pro 13inch,mid2010 qwertyu keys don't work after I upgrade os x 10.10 Yosemite. but it works on keyboard viewer. I'm not sure if it's hardware or software problem, how can I fix it?

    Hello there, kipolo.
Great job using the Keyboard viewer to troubleshoot your issue so far. The following Knowledge Base article provides a great checklists of steps to pinpoint the issue a bit further:
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond - Apple Support
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • MacBook Pro power adapters dying, keys frying, strange heat problem

I've got a very frustrating and mysterious major situation going on with my MBPro. I'm living in Peru in the jungle. I've got a basic electric hookup that's caused no problems for the few electrical devices I've got: small dorm-size fridge, a lightbulb, speaker system, iPhone, iPod, and, until recently a MacBook I had borrowed temporarily from a friend here. I recently visited the states and returned with my MacBook Pro which I need for work down here. Thusly my troubles began.
I noticed pretty quickly the power adapter got super hot, could easily fry an egg on it sometimes. One night I unplugged the Magsafe adapter from the MBP for safekeeping, slept, and in the a.m., the adapter (unplugged from the Mac but still plugged into the wall outlet) was terribly hot. Does this make any sense? It gets stranger & worse...
I used the Mac later that day and within a couple hours two of the keyboard keys stopped working for good (I was later able to remap these keys using a 3rd party program). The next day the Magsafe adapter stopped working. Certainly heat had something to do with it, despite the fact that MagSafes have built-in safeguards whereby they (should) shut down temporarily if overheated. But this sucker was dead.
A friend from the states visited me 3 weeks later and brought two more adapters ordered from Amazon.com, each a different generic brand that had good customer reviews.
The first, which looks just like a MagSafe, worked fine but died in a week. Again, it would get superhot not even plugged into the MBP (like the other one). I should note the MBP also was always hot to super hot. Also the large plastic square power hub of the adapter, even after it died, would get hot if plugged in, it just wouldn't power the Mac.
The other (3rd) adapter worked for awhile, and its rectangular power bar hub would only get a little hot. But the Mac would still get insanely hot, as did the very top of the adapter plug - the part with the teeth that go into the MBP. Within 2 weeks, the adapter wouldn't work unless I applied pressure on it against the Mac. Then it stopped working even with pressure applied.
Here's where it gets even stranger:
What I noticed was that the two outermost of the five teeth on the plug had been somehow pushed further in, such that they couldn't make contact with the MBP (I guess the pressure I was manually applying helped this for awhile until the teeth sank even much further in). How and why in the world did this happen?
Desperate, I brought the two adapters to an electrician, and had him combine the good teeth end piece from the previous generic Magsafe with the adapter whose teeth caved in. Viola, it worked...but just for three days. Amazingly the two outer teeth of the new hybrid plug ALSO retreated and couldn't make contact. Furthermore, I noticed some dried plastic juice gunk around them and concluded that the heat of the connection to the Mac was somehow mysteriously melting the glue around these teeth and also causing them to push further into the adapter more. I know: sounds almost impossible. But this is what happened, TWICE.
Obviously there is an overall problem here, one which concerns heat, among whatever else. It's hot here in the jungle. While my other appliances have had no problem, I've certainly noticed the fridge and speaker subwoofer system run hot. But the electricity reading is normal, and I have a current regulator stabilizing the electrical flow. And the previous MacBook (not Pro) had no problems. And yes the fans on the MBP work. And in general the electricity here works fine to run people's electronics, including some very large freezer units and plasma TVs.
I'm at a loss as to what to do and to how to identify the problem beyond "heat". If I don't get the MBP working normally I can, in effect, no longer be here as it's essential to my work. Therefore any help would be most awesome and greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    1) Make sure you have the right adapter type for your model of MacBook. There are 45w, 60w, and 85w adapters. Pro's either take the 60 or 85 watt.
    2) Most 3rd party adapters I have tried are junk, junk, junk. They quit working, have melted, have fried my macbook, and even caught on fire.
Now what it sounds like to me is maybe your are having an issue with a loose magsafe board. This was a big problem with the white macbooks( I realize that is not what yours is). The MagSafe board (part where your charger plugs into the computer) gets pushed in ever so slightly and if the connection between your adapter and the board is not precise it can cause issues of anything from overcharging and shutting off the adapter, overheating, damaging your Magsafe board, and making the adapter useless.  The best way to tell if it is this is if you have to wiggle your adapter to get it to charge correctly. (Note I have never seen the happen with the T-shaped MagSafe 1.0 but I wouldn't doubt it, but I know it happens with the MagSafe 2.0 L shaped adapters.)

  • Macbook Pro 13" screen loose

So I was just wondering if there is a simple way to fix the loose wobbly hinge without having to bring it in to Apple. I don't believe I have insurance or apple care. If there isn't a way to fix it by myself, anyone know how much it would cost to get it fixed?

Well, it all depends on what year/model your MacBook Pro is.  I have a mid 2010 Macbook pro and this guide is extremely useful.
    Goodluck!

  • Macbook Pro screen blacks out keys stay lit

The gist of it is in the subject
Pretty much without warning, does not have a preference for type of application being ran, the screen will completely black out. If sound is being play it either stops or begins to skip. The keys stay lit. The only way to bring it back is a hard restart.

  • MacBook Pro power adapters dying, keys frying, mysterious heat problem

Thanks.

    Oglethorpe,
I do have a current regulator or "stabilazador" here. The LED changes often from green (normal) to yellow (low). I don't understand why it indicates these changes in voltage if it's its job to stabilize them anyway. But anyway I bought it on suggestion amidst this crisis but it hasn't helped none, and even it gets hot sometimes, even when nothings plugged into it.
These generic adapters I bought both had a plethora of rather detailed good reviews (and a few bad) that seemed beyond the ambitions of counterfeiters.
In any case, I'm pretty sure the adopters are not at issue within my problem here. I'm starting to really think the electrical hookup is at fault, but thanks much for your input.

  • Macbook pro screen seems loose

we have two macbook pros in the house, the one we just bought, the screen tilts back about an inch further than the year old one. when the laptop is opened it seems the screen is loose, if that makes sense. it does not allow you to adjust the angle it sits at, i just falls all the way back.
i guess my question is i this normal for the new macbooks and can i tighten the joint up so it does not fall and gives me more flexibility with the angle of the screen instead of closed and all the way back.

This is the new laptop that has the issues? If so, don't try fixing it your self. Give a call to applecare since this should be covered by warranty.
Also, No laptops normally do not do what yours is doing.

  • Macbook Pro 3.1 looses power completely when battery at 6..9%

I recently got a new battery for my 2007 Macbook Pro 3.1. Whenever I'm running on battery, the Macbook gives me a warning at 10% remaining battery life and loosed power all of a sudden when reaching 6..9%. All work is lost, when I reconnect the charger cable the Macbook restarts completely and doesn't just wake up from sleep.
    Questions:
    - How can I calibrate the battery correctly if a complete shut down happens before reaching 0% (as I understand the calibration procedure I need to discharge the battery from 100% to 0% in one go)
    - Can a faulty PRAM battery cause this problem?
    - Can I check the status of the PRAM battery?
    Thanks for any help
    John

Shown below is the discharge curve of my A1275 battery (it contains 3 individual cells) vs. time. After 2h6min the hard shutdown occurs each time - at a 'remaining' capacity of ~300mAh.
The battery itself doesn't get calibrated to a lower value, it remains at some 5044-5090mAh when doing a calibration.
The true capacity seems to be only ~4600-4700mAh, but since the calibration procedure doesn't work successfully with this battery, the problem will persist.
Maybe there is a way to lower the battery capacity on purpose to a lower value. There might be a possibility with IO_reg.... (?)

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13' Loose Battery

I have a MacBook Pro with Retina Display 13' and I just figured out that when I shake it it makes a rattling noise. I figured out that it was the mid-right battery cell because I checked on iFixit. If anyone else has a solution to this problem or if it is serious than please respond!
    Thanks!

    Same here.
Apple Premium Service Provider said there is nothing to fix. Everything would be on the right place.
The battery can't be loose because it's adhered to the alu body.

  • Macbook Pro Airport Card looses connection if not running a continuous network ping

Okay, I have a crazy issue going on.
Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, soon after my Airport Card started disconnecting from any network and I would have to turn it off/on to get it working again and then it would die about 45 seconds later.  This repeats over and over.  I have found that if I run a continuous ping to something else on the network it will stay live and not disconnect.  So, my Airport Card will stay connected if I run a continuous ping, but without it it will die every time.  What the heck is going on?  Did Mountain Lion put something in the firmware on my Airport card that is messing it up?  I have done fresh installs many times and downgraded to lion and snow lepard and still the same issue.  Is my Wifi Nic just dead or is this some other issues like the antenna?  I have a new Wifi Nic in route from China but I want to make sure I finish running through all other possibilities before it arrives.
    Thank you
    Kevin Monette
