MacBook Pro responding slowly, beachball, Console errors

Hi everyone.
My friend has asked me to look at his MacBook Pro; he's been having troubles with various applications and the machine responding slowly in general.
Machine's specs:
15" MacBook Pro (Model 4,1); 2.4 GHz Core2Duo, 4 GB RAM, OS X 10.6.3
Symptoms:
According to him, the "sbbod" would show up when opening many applications--didn't seem to matter which ones. I haven't been able to replicate the behavior in his user account or in the new one we created for me to use for testing.
What I have noticed are errors like this in Console (this is just a small sample; the same messages are created for nearly all applications opened):
5/14/10 12:46:21 AM smcFanControl[430] Incompatible applications: app=com.eidac.smcFanControl2, targetApp=com.apple.Safari
5/14/10 12:47:01 AM firefox-bin[442] Incompatible applications: app=org.mozilla.firefox, targetApp=com.apple.Safari
5/14/10 12:47:01 AM [0x0-0x3f03f].org.mozilla.firefox 2010-05-14 00:47:01.885 firefox-bin[442:903] Incompatible applications: app=org.mozilla.firefox, targetApp=com.apple.Safari
5/14/10 12:50:49 AM Adobe Reader[456] Incompatible applications: app=com.adobe.Reader, targetApp=com.apple.Safari
The applications seem to function normally, but there is a delay in opening them. I don't understand the error message, so if anyone has insight, I'd love to hear it!
Troubleshooting steps taken:
1) Tried second user account to see if Console messages appear--they do.
2) Used Disk Utility to verify hard drive--all OK, no repairs needed
3) Applied the 10.6.3 v 1.1 COMBO update--no change
4) Reinstalled Safari, since each message mentions Safari--no change.
5) Verified hard drive has plenty of free space (294 GB free of about 500 GB)
6) Verified amount of free RAM--1~2 GB free at all times
7) Used Smart Utility to check integrity of drive--all OK.
I'm honestly stumped by this one and will be grateful for any advice!

Gonna pass the "solved" star to you, since the suggestion you made is essentially what the gentleman said at the Apple store.
What we ended up doing, since something had gone terribly wrong with the Applications folder, and the system in general, is what he called a "manual merge," which involved the following:
*Copying the entire home folder to an external drive formatted HFS+
*Erasing the internal drive, then installing Snow Leopard.
*Creating a "test" user account with a different name than the original home folder
*Installing available updates to SL
*Changing permissions on the Users folder for the admin group. Permissions were changed from "read only" to "read & write"
*Dragging the original home folder into the Users folder.
*Once the original folder had finished copying, entered System Preferences and created a new user account using the short name from the original as the new account's name.
*System Preferences requested to use the home folder that already existed, which is what was desired.
*Changed permissions on the Users folder for the admin group back to "read only."
*Re-installed desired 3rd-party apps.
The entire thing was kind of a hassle due to slowish FW transfer speeds (took about 3 hours for the 180 GBs of data to transfer off the hard drive to the external, but only 1.5 hours to transfer back after the reinstall) and a few copying errors.
End result: Performance greatly improved, applications no longer jamming, and no data lost. My friend is quite happy.
Thanks again for the input--it helped me get on the right track!

I reconnected the original powered hub that I thought probably caused the problem and this time it shut down the whole computer. When I rebooted everything now works perfectly. The system reset. I tried another powered hub and it didn't have the same effect so the old one is heading for the bin and with fingers crossed all systems are now working perfectly. Trying to reset PRAM or reset the SMC didn't work but causing the same power issue did. Thanks for your input though. It did get me to think what was the original cause.

  • Macbook pro runs slowly even with tons of free memory??

    Hi,
I've seriously tried to follow everyone's advice on how to keep your Macbook running efficiently, even so I have serious problems with it. For one thing, Microsoft Office programs run more slowly on my Macbook Pro than they would on a PC from 1995. If I open Word or Excel, it takes at least 6 minutes to load, and then functions ok (most of the time) but if I try to save a file, graphics wig out and typing the name of the file, it's like each letter is processed 3 seconds at a time after taking a whole minute to understand what I'm even typing in the first place. I use Google Chrome (no, safari doesn't run any faster) and I sometimes have issues with that. Finder also! It takes so long to click around my folders because my computer responds so slowly. It also sometimes wigs out when I try to jump between desktop screens. And actually even the mouse cursor decides not to respond for a few seconds.
I have 411 GB (out of 500) of free memory. I don't run multiple apps at once--usually I will run Chrome and Word, and then if I absolutely must, also Excel or Powerpoint, but I really try to use at most 3 at a time, and then I still have these severe problems. Sometimes I only have Word open and I still have these problems. My desktop is not cluttered; I clean it out regularly so I have like 5 files on there, pretty much all screenshots. My downloads folder does not have a billion files in it; it has accumulated some but I do make an effort to clean it regularly so there really isn't much. I don't have tons of music or movies or pictures or anything on my computer, and I also clean out my deleted files in the trash regularly.
That being said, I'm not an expert on computer maintenance (because I always seem to have these issues), so maybe there are other things I haven't tried that people could recommend? I'm pretty sure that my RAM or CPU (I don't know the difference because I don't know much about computers) are being overexhausted, because sometimes I can actually hear the fan going off because my Mac is trying hard to process stuff (this happened 5 minutes ago when I had nothing but Chrome opened but I restarted and now it's quiet again). But I don't know how to check RAM or CPU usage on my Mac? And since I don't run that many apps anyway I don't know how to resolve this problem.
Is there anything else I can try? Some other folders I should clean out? If so, can you please explain where to find these folders on OS X Yosemite? Because I used to be a  person, but I bought this Macbook Pro a year ago and I still have trouble navigating. Or if you think I should take this into the apple store and have it looked at, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance. \

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • 2012 Macbook Pro running slowly since mavericks update

Since updating to Mavericks when it was first released my macbok pro has been running very slowly. Starting up apps takes longer, hangs occur when switching between apps or even browser tabs, when i close the lid the laptop won't go to sleep but instead heats up and i can't listen to a song on itunes the whole way through without several 20 or so second pauses. I have tried repair permissions (this oddly improves performance when its running), resetting NVRAM/PRAM. resetting SMC and a Hardware test but nothing worked/ no problems identified. The problems still occur in safe mode and when i added a new user. I also removed any apps or software that could be causing it such as chrome but this didn't help.
Similar problems occured the last time i update the mac, though they were much more severe and lead to the hard drive being replaced at the apple store. It had been running smoothly until the mavericks update.
After looking at similar posts i took the liberty of providing the following information:

    Hi Somajoe,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you have tried a lot of good troubleshooting steps. Since the behavior persists in safe mode and a new user, and you have effectively ruled out third party software conflicts, I recommend reinstalling Mavericks next:

  • Macbook Pro running slowly, bad crunchy(?) sound, and now shuts off randomly

    Hi there,
I have an early 2011 13" Macbook Pro running OSX 10.8.4. For the past six months or so, my computer has been running relatively slowly. I brought it into a shop, but the guy couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. In the past two months or so, the sound has been terrible, whether it's watching youtube videos or listening to something on itunes or playing a game. it will sound fine, until like 30 seconds in when it will go all crunchy and garbled and terrible sounding. I don't know how else to describe it. Just now, my computer randomly turned off in the middle of me playing a game, and at first it wouldn't turn back on. I'm a little freaked out by that, as I'm a graduate school student and my computer is my life. I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong with it. :/
I've attached the crash report from the shut down here. Does anyone know what this means? Thanks for your help!

  • Macbook Pro Running Slowly and Pinwheeling a lot

I have been having an issue with my macbook pro running very slowly lately. Everything just feels slugglish, and sometimes menus and other programs take a while to respond. I have 4 GB of RAM, and I just feel like things are running too slow for a computer with a Core2Duo and 4 Gigs of RAM. I have snow leopard installed.
Also, the computer came with 2GB, but I upgraded to 4 myself. I did not buy the memory from Apple though, I bought it directly from crucial. Is it possible the memory has gone bad or something. I really don't know what to do.

Do you still have the slowness problem when running OSX from the DVD (not running AHT)?
Is this symptom occasional, or all the time?
Most of the classic problems causing slowness that can be user fixed have been covered, but it does not mean totally eliminated.
The hard drive can still be intermittently bad despite the SMART status. I would put the original RAM back, and boot from an external Firewire hard drive with my backup HD clone. If you don't have one, you should - you might need it sooner than you think. This test can confirm if your internal HD is causing this or not.
I suppose it's also possible that you've developed a software problem and reloading OSX might help. This is quite a lot of work without a backup clone or Time Machine backup. You may have to take it to a technician if you don't feel up to doing this.

  • Macbook Pro 13" slowly freezing

I have a Macbook Pro 13" late 2011 and have recently experienced problems with it suddenly freezing up. There is normally no problem while running somewhat heavier programs such as Garageband with multiple tracks and plug-ins. Mostly it's while I study and listen to music or watch a movie the media player just stops dead. Not entirely crashes but slowly it will work itself into a more and more frozen state. It starts of with just one program freezing and the others working a while longer but they will also eventually (in say 1-2 minutes) start freezing up. As I said it is not a problem with running my macbook too hard (checked the activity log and both the ram and the CPU has more than enough free space to work without any problems).
I have reinstalled Lion two times the last couple of months as I first thought it was a software problem but now I'm not so sure. I've also tried the Hardware Check that comes with my computer and it says everything's fine as well as the disk utility app says my hard drive is fine.
Would be most grateful for any advice about what to do. I am really worried that it is my hardware that is about to die and as I am a student I really wouldn't afford handing it in somewhere or buying a new computer.
    /Martin

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • 2010 MacBook Pro: Freeze w/ NVDA kernal error. Hardware fail or software problem?

Hundreds of complaints about the hardware design flaw which Apple never addressed in their 2009 model year computers, wherein the GeForce graphics card overheats and causes constant crashing, is here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/27865920?tstart=0#27865920
How about the same sort of problem in a 2010 MPB running OSX 10.6.8.  Screen locks up, case is very very hot, need to use the Power Key to shut down.  Since they never solved the 2009 problem, they probably used the same flawed design in the 2010 computers.
I have to keep this computer going as long as possible. I've used Macs exclusively since my Mac Plus, but 21st Century Apple is a stinking crappy company, which has ****** with me too much.  I won't be buying anymore Apple products.
There seem to be no driver updates for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and OSX 10.6.8.
Lately I get one or two freezes a day, always when browsing in FireFox (latest rev, which is 36.0.4). Need to shut down with power key. The hardware test on the Applications disk says my machine is OK. Is my hardware failing, or is this some software issue with FireFox? Or is OSX 10.6.8 simply too old to keep up with Flash and other web page crap?  Can I slather a bunch of conductive grease inside my case to get more heat flow to the case itself?

The logic board is failing and would have to be replaced if you want to keep using the machine. Apple would probably decline to service the machine because of its age. The part may no longer be available.

  • Macbook pro gives 'no airport driver' error after applying latest update

So I applied the latest security update this morning, rebooted and now my macbook refuses to finish booting into gui mode. It says 'no airport driver' and tries to do something 10 times (takes awhile) but then doensn't finish booting and drops me into a console where it says 'compname/I have no name!#' and the whoami command hangs!
Luckily I have boot camp with windows on this mac and I'm posting from the windows side right now. Everything works fine from the windows side (wifi, etc).
So anyone else have this problem? Or have any ideas how to fix it? I'll reboot in a bit and write down the exact error messages hoping it will help.
I really would not like to reinstall mac os if I don't have to, tho this seems to be the only way to fix this.

BTW some more info on this machine, its a macbook pro model A1150, 2.0ghz 15" core duo w/ 2gb ram, 120 gb hd, etc.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
I'm seeing similar problems loading the airport driver on my macbook pro though it doesn't stop me from starting up OS X. Originally I only discovered the problem because my machine would intermittently boot up without the airport status icon in the menu bar. Checking the network settings I saw that airport was off and there was no option to turn it on. Digging further I found that there wasn't even an airport card listed in the hardware inventory in the system profiler. Checking out the system.log in the Console app I found the following sequence of errors:
    Feb 25 21:45:05 localhost kernel[0]: ath_attach: devid 0x24
    Feb 25 21:45:05 localhost kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: 5
Feb 25 21:45:05 localhost kernel[0]: ar5416GetEeprom: Failed crc in geteeprom
Feb 25 21:45:05 localhost kernel[0]: unable to attach hardware; HAL status 7
    Feb 25 21:45:05 localhost kernel[0]: start [/SourceCache/AirPortDriverAtheros5424/AirPortDriverAtheros5424-221.46/m35b/src /driver/AtherosController.cpp:464] loaded unsuccessfully
A few lines later I also see the "No Airport Driver Found" message.
I'm not sure exactly when this problem started happening because I usually just leave my macbook pro connected to my network via an ethernet cable. I don't use the airport often but it's pretty annoying when I need it and I can't get it to start reliably.
