No styles or effects in PSE 10

I installed an action in my PSE 10 It did not work and kept layer styles and photo effects from showing up. I deleted the action--still not showing up so I reset my computer to a time prior to the installation--still no styles or effects. What is wrong?

You need to delete the
ThumbDatabase.db3
at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0
and
MediaDatabase.db3
at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0\Locale\en_us
Then start the pse 10 editor and wait for the effects database to rebuild, which can take some time, like 20 miniutes sometimes, so just let pse 10 run until it's finished

Well, I don't know where windows explorer comes in, but you want to take the .asl files (you must unzip them if they're in a zip file), and put them into C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photosho Elements\8.0\Photo Creations\layer styles. Then you will need to delete the file MediaDatabase.db3, which is in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photosho Elements\8.0\locale\en_US. When you next start PSE give it time to rebuild this file before you do anything (when you see the icons reappear in the effects panel, it's done).

PSE 6 - Lost Layer Styles & Photo Effects

I am running PSE 6 on two computers. For some reason, I cannot access layer styles or photo effects in the Editor on only one of the computers. I have run the "repair" function within the software - no fix. I have restarted several times - no fix. I have reset Tools - no fix. (You'll notice I get more desparate as I go along ... ) I have re-set Program Preferences - no fix. I have even tried copy/paste with the files from the working computer to the non-working computer ... C: Program Data/Adobe/PSE/6.0/locale/en_US copying both Photo Creations and Photo Creations Metadata. Nope, that didin't work either. I've searched google for a solution to no avail. Nothing happened (that I know of) to "upset" the program. I am running PSE 6.0 on Vista 32 bit.
Please help??!

I know you said you did a copy/paste job on the folders but try renaming the mediadatabase.bd3 file and rebuilding it.

Note: The application data folder is a hidden folder...but you already know that since you did the copy/paste. I've seen a few post that indicate it might take 10 minutes after launching for your styles and effects to rebuild.
You might also try holding in the Shift key as you launch elements. In older versions, this made the preview cache rebuild...not sure if this is still true but worth a try. Again wait about 10 minutes after launching to see if your effects and styles rebuild after launch.

Missing thumbnails in effects panels - PSE 10 - PC-Win7

The individual thumbnails for filters, layer styles, photo effects, all effects are missing. This happened previously and I reinstalled PSE. They appeared.
This evening earlier, the filters (did not pay attention to the other 3) were showing but now nothing appears in any of the 4 categories. I have reset the panels without success.
The thumbnails for 'contents' appear to be okay.

Matrix Style title effects

Does anyone know how to get a matrix style title effect and whether it can be done in Livetype or Motion, or is there a good plug-in for it?

There's no accounting for taste. The first Matrix was great. The other two...just showing off...story severely lacking.
But I have to agree with Randy...BATTLEFIELD EARTH was truly a pile. As was BATMAN & ROBIN with The Gubernator Arnold.
But are we going to turn this into a thread of what was the worse movie ever made? Hmmmm....

Styles and Effects Effects

In the Styles and Effects palette, under Layer Effects, we seem to have lost
the WOW NEON styles.
Short of a reinstall, does anyone have any suggestions how to get these Wow
Neon effects back?

I am going to hijack Beth Haney's answer to another question as she explained it so well, but I do want to credit her.
You don't say what platform you're using, so I'll give the instructions for both.
With Elements closed, click on the start up icon then make a QUICK grab for (Windows) Control, Alt, and Shift keys or (Mac) Command, Option, and Shift keys. Hold all three down until you get a screen asking if you want to delete Settings. Say Yes. If you don't get that screen, you didn't get the keys depressed fast enough, so keep trying. A new Preference folder will build as Elements continues to launch.
Since this is "new" behavior for an installation that's been working properly for a long time, it's possible that folder became corrupted. That's pretty common and can cause all kinds of mysterious things to happen. If this doesn't correct the problem, repost and add information about the kind of system you're using.

There are also brushes included in PSE10:
The effect on the photo left is the Assorted Brushes...Crosshatch 4 (#48) clicked once with the default settings, then changed the angle to 56d and clicked again.
The effect on the photo right is the Assorted Brushes...Starburst Large with its size increased to 119pixels. Without moving the cursor, increase the opacity of the effect by clicking again....

Problems with effects in PSE 10 (was from cappy pappy)

I have an IMAC and use PSE 10 for my photoshop. I have several Florabella add ons that I use and was trying to add some new ones last night. So I went through the usual steps but when I went from photo creations to photo effect there was no photo effect screen. It goes straight from the screen with photo creations to the list panel. Maybe I accidently deleted something. Can anyone know how to fix this?

Hello and thax for responding.
No, that was one of the first things we tried.
My helpful guy in the store went into Terminal and tried to figure out why all the files were tied to Administrator and needed Root password to move or delete.
Even the folder that he created via Terminal (he added a folder just to see what happended) got the + mark after it and was there by not able to move or add files into, without admin password.
I also used the 10.6 startup DVD to go in and try to reset the ACL for my internal SSD drive, but that did not seem to help either.
There is something about these files and disk that is not giving my Macbook permissions to change the info.
Can also maybe be good to know that before the disk crashed, I managed to use time maschine to back it up. I hooked up the disk to my computer, added another backup disk and backed up my Internal MacBook drive together with the (about to) crashing disk. Then I copied the info from this time machine disk on to the New Drive.
What I believe I need is to re-write the permissions on the disk so that not only admin are allowed to change the info but I have no idea how to do that.
Hope this gives you a little more of a clue what´s is going on and that you have an idea how to solve it.

Lighting effects in PSE 12

I recently upgrade from PSE 9 to PSE 12. I like the difference in the user interface but cannot find Lighting Effects in Filter/Render.
Is it tucked away somewhere else.

FM style DHTML effects? (RH 7.01 update)

Hi - I just updated RH7 to version 7.01 (via Adobe Updater).
One improvement in the readme caught my eye:
"Frame Maker style with DHTML effects when mapped to a
RoboHelp style do not retain DHTML effects on mapping." (of course,
this means that the update is supposed to fix this issue...)
Jain, or anyone else, can you explain in more detail how to
use this feature? That is, suppose I want to map some FM text to an
expanding hotspot in RH. How would that be done?
Related perhaps - is there a way to mark up FM text so that a
pop-up text box in RH could be created automatically during
conversion?

BTW, the update addresses several issues that will be of
interest to members here.

Please consider the following features of RoboHelp.
RoboHelp allows a user to map styles present in source FM
document to RoboHelp styles present in fmstyles.css.
Also, one can apply DHTML effects on a CSS style in RoboHelp
using RoboHelp style editor. There is a set of DHTML effects which
RoboHelp provides.
By combining the above two operations, one can achieve
applying of DHTML effects on text imported from FM document in
RoboHelp.
Here are the detailed steps to achieve this
1. Open Style Mapping dialog during Add(for Technical Suite
only) or Import or from properties dialog of added FM document.
(Style Mapping dialog can be invoked by clicking the Edit button
for Style Mappings under "Style Settings" dialog/tab)
2. Click "Styles" button. Style Editor dialog opens.
3. Create a new style or modify an existing style.
4. Open DHTML effects dialog using the "Format" button.
5. Apply the available DHTML effects.
6. Click OK to close the DHTML effects dialog.
7. Click "Close" button to close the Style Editor dialog.
8. Map the required FrameMaker style with the newly
created/edited style.
9. Click OK to close the style mapping dialog.
8. Complete the Add/Import in case of a new document or do

How to use keyword tags effectively in pse 8

No matter what I try, have not been able to make keyword tags work effectively. Have followed all directions from books and others. Even customer support was not able to help.
The problem is that tagged photos will not show up by themselves. All other photos in the catalog open at the same time. The tagged photos sometimes show a blue circle with a white check mark through it. All the other photos show a red circle with a slash accross it in the upper left hand corner of the photos.
Customer support says that that is how the program works. I don't believe it!
Wold uninstalling and reinstalling pse 8 work?
Any other suggestions?

Would you consider suggesting a work-flow for someone who is just starting out with Organizer? (As an aside, if you are familiar with Picasa, would you give your opinion about the relative merits of Picasa and PSE Organizer?)
In all honesty, I can longer recommend the Organizer -- it's buggy, slow, hard to use, and Adobe shows little inclination for fixing bugs that have been around since PSE 6 or earlier. (I use it because I have large catalogs dating back to Photoshop Album 1.) See my review:

As for alternatives: At the low end, many people are satisfied with the free or almost-free programs: iPhoto, Picasa, Windows Live Photo Gallery (which in my opinion is better than iPhoto). These are fast and easier to use than PSE and can handle thousands of photos. For more sophisticated users with larger catalogs, many people like Lightroom, Aperture, Imatch, Idimager, and ACDsee Pro.

Newbie question: how do I create a bokeh effect in PSE 8?

I am having trouble getting a blurred background effect in a portrait. Could someone please tell me how to do it. I've attached the example I am working on. All I want to do is to blur down the bricks behind the man's head, but I cannot seem to do it by creating a duplicate layer and then using the blur filter. Thanks for any help you can give.

The steps you describe are correct, so it sounds like a problem with the program. Is this a new problem or has it always been that way? Do you have this problem with other Blur tools or other Filters, or just the Gaussian Blur? You might want to post another forum topic titled "problem with Gaussian Blur"; more users are likely to read and respond to it.
You might try resetting the preferences file. This often corrects PSE problems which pop up for no apparant reason. I don't know if this works in PSE8, but there is how to do it in previous versions: Press and hold Option-Command-Shift immediately while starting PSE. The timing is critical; you may have to try this several times. A dialog box will pop up with the question "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements Settings file?" (or similar message depending on the PSE version). Click YES.

Special effects with PSE 10

Using PSE 10 is it possible to create a silhoutte effect? I would also like to create a multiple exposure effect. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

For the silhouette, if you mean a black figure on a white background, make a selection of the figure, fill the selection with black, then use Select...Inverse to select the background and fill it with white.
You'll have to explain more precisely what you mean by a "multiple exposure effect".
