It is true that the only way to sync your Mac with iCloud is to upgrad. You need to be running OS X Lion 10.7.2 or higher in order to sync your Mac with iCloud. Once all your devices are signed into the same iCloud account and you have turned on your iCloud data syncing, you will be able to keep them all in sync using iCloud. You will still have to sync with iTunes to manage your iTunes media such as music, movies, podcasts, etc. You will have the option to either continue backing up automatically with your computer when you sync with iTunes, or to back up your iOS devices automatically to iCloud every 24 hours (as long as they are connected to wifi and your chargers).

There's no such file in Mac OS X version of Skype. But there's a directory for your Skype user account in /Users/%current_user_name%/Library/Application Support/Skype/
try:
quitting Skype
renaming old folder
signing into the Skype

Enough RAM, CPU, Disk space and yet the Beach Ball rolls on

No app Not Responding
No huge draw on CPU cycles
Permissions repaired
Disk defragged
AND YET, I open up a Word document (not just a specific one), or I start up an application, or I change a Calendar date...
And I get a Spinning Beach Ball for several seconds (a lifetime)
What gives!?!?
This is embarrassing.

When you checked that, did you change Activity Monitor's "Show" option from its default of "My Processes" to "All Processes?"
If not, then you would not see where the big hitters in the over-eating of processor cycles reside.
If you did have AM thus set, then what you decribe sounds like you may have installed a third-party anti-virus/internet security software package or one of those awful "I'll clean you Mac" programs.
Try with the WD drives disconnected. WD bare drives are great but their enclosures are abysmal. I had one on both a PowerPC G4 tower and my i7 iMac and it dragged down the performance of the computer. I ripped open the cheap WD enclosure and installed the perfectly good bare drive in a enclosure from OWS and it works flawlessly without making my computer feel like its got syrup dripping inside.
I don't see an iMac with a 3.8Ghz i7 processor. What does "About this Mac" in your Apple menu say about your processor?
If there are no AV or cleaning apps installed and you comptuer is still in warranty, I'd think about making an appointment with the Apple Genius bar.

I have a MacBook Pro, it recently started freezing upon startup. It would get to a blue screen and just sit there. I've tried booting in safemode to run disk repair and still doesnt help. If I do manage to get past the blue screen, it still freezes

If I manage to get past the blue screen, and open up youtube on google chrome, it will freeze before it loads youtube. I've tried safeboot and disk repair, nothing seems to work. I even tried to factory reset it but it wont connect to my internet when I reboot with power + option.. any ideas?

This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.

Just wondering if everybody having the same issue as me?
Example 1:
Under Sytem Preferences --> Keybaord --> Setting set to "All Controls" it works fine until I restart my Mac or Log Off then IN.
It happend to me under Keyboard and Language & Text Preference Only
Is getting quite irritating now.
I have realize that it only happen to my Mac with FileVault Turn On.
On my other MacBook with FileVault Turn Off it does not have the above issues.
Currently Running on Mac OS X Montain Lion 10.8.4
Under a MacBook Pro Core i5
Just wonder if there anybody out there with the same issue as me or have a solution.

Select "Library" from the dropdown, then "Preferences" folder.
Look for this file.
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Right click the file and select " Move To Trash" from the contextual menu.

Yes that makes sense, however have you updated it at My Apple ID before trying to change it in your system preferences > iCloud settings, you must do that first.

With journaling, I have found that my computer is saving a large amount of data, logs of all the changes I make to files; how can I clean up these logs?

For example, in Notes, I have written three notes; however if I click on 'All On My Mac' on the side bar, I see about 10 different versions of each note I make, it saves a version every time I add or delete a sentence.
I also noticed, that when I write an email, Mail saves about 10 or more draft versions before the final is sent.
I understand that all this journaling provides a level of security, and prevents data lost; but I was wondering, is there a function to clean up journal logs once in a while?

Are you using Microsoft word? Microsoft thinks the users are idiots. They put up a lot of pointless messages that annoy & worry users. I have seen this message from Microsoft word. It's annoying.

When you copy information via edit > copy, command + c, edit > cut, or command +x, you place the information on the clipboard. When you paste information, edit > paste or command + v, you copy information from the clipboard to your data file.
If you edit > cut or command + x and you do not paste the information and you quite Word, you could be loosing information. Microsoft is very worried about this. When you quite Word, Microsoft checks if there is information on the clipboard & if so, Microsoft puts out this message.
You should be saving your work more than once a day. I'd save every 5 minutes. command + s does a save.

Your first going to have to remove all your personal data off the machine to a external storage drive, do not use TimeMachine when it asks as this will copy the entire drive and is unnecessary at this time (also takes too long).
You need to drag and drop copy your personal data folders (Music, Pictures, Movies etc) to a external storage drive, once done, unmount and disconnect this drive.

Next your going to follow the Zero Erase and install method for your OS X version, either 10.6 or 10.7, here
How to reinstall just OS X or erase/install OS X
10.7 requires your AppleID and password to install, so make sure to have that ready.
Once you reboot your into the real setup of OS X, which will require your name etc, so it's now your machine.
Install your programs, iLife package is only free for the owner of the machine.
If you have the 10.6 machine specific disks, then it's on there.
If your using 10.7, then you'll have to purchase it from the App Store.
Last, return your files from the storage drive, consider setting up a TimeMachine or clone on the external drive.

Thats the problem I bought it from a very large thrift store. i went back asked the person where I bought the computer he said we can not give you the password. I thought buying it there was a good idea because not only was it a nice deal but it was like I was maknig a donation. I know that i messed up because i do not have the installation disk. Can't change Desktop background in System Preferences

Hi. When I try to change my desktop background, either by right-clicking on the desktop or by opening System Preferences, the screen for Desktop options is blank. None of the options show up, grayed out or otherwise. While in System Preferences, if I click on Screen Saver, everything there works fine. But the button for Desktop becomes grey and I can't click on it.
I've tried Repair Permissions and this didn't work. I've seen similar posts here, but they don't seem to have the same problem I do, nothing freezes up, the Desktop screen is just blank. Do you have any ideas?

1. OK, let's try some more trashing: 1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
2. Open your Home > Library > Caches folder, then trash the following two files therein:
- com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
- com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
3. Trash the file
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
4. Trash the file
com.apple.systempreferences.xxx.plist
in your Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, where xxx is an alphanumeric string.
5. Empty Trash.
6. Launch System Preferences and see if the problem is resolved.2. You wrote"I still have my Desktop Pictures folder."I presume you mean the Macintosh HD > Library > Desktop Pictures folder I cited previously. How about the contents of that folder? It should contain five folders:• Abstract

4. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see if it's isolated to your account. Do you have a second user account defined on your system? If so, log in to it and see if the problem happens there. If it does, it is probably a system-wide problem. If not, it is something with your user account. If you don't have a second account on your system, you can create a new one using System Preferences > Accounts. See "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Adding a new user account to your computer."
5. Immediately after the problem occurs — i.e. you open Desktop & Screen Saver preferences and either cannot select Desktop or Desktop is blank — check the ends of these Console logs for clues. Let's see if console can tell us if the Desktop preference pane is corrupted.
6. Do you have any personal Web space? If so, can you take a screen shot of the problem and upload it to your personal Web space? If so, post a link back here to the image. It may help if I can see what you're seeing, though I think I understand it from your description, "a picture is worth..." etc.
7. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
8. To what was / is your Desktop image presently set? One of the Apple collections or images? Something from your iPhoto Library?
FYI: I number my points so you can respond by number.

If you are going to re-install, make sure you have 1 or preferably 2 full backups using Time Machine and/or a clone.
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
