Numbers not fit for Serious Business Use

I run a small busieness with 8 users all using Macs (10.6.8) with 10.6.8 server.  Nothign dramatic, lots of small and medoum sized word procesing dicuments and spreadsheets.  We are long-time Mac users, I stayed with Appleworks for quite some time as we were used to it.  However over the last few years I have grown to like Numbers, and think it is quick and easy to produce very nice-looking output.
So long as you don't do anything complicated or business critical - I have found out the hard way that it just isn't safe for grown-up use.  The reason I say this is baed on my experience with a spreadsheet I have written to record all jobs quoted out and analyse our performance.   The basic data table is about 400 rows x 50 columns.  There are a few dozen analysis sheets many with lots of instances of some quiet complex formulae,  Numbers is creaking at the seams, it takes 30 seconds just to open the file.  But my big problem is, it is very easy to get results that are just plain WRONG.  After many hours of debugging I finally discovered the reason.  As this spreadsheet has been developed there have been quite a lot of formatting changes, notable between "automatic", "text" and "date", and between "automatic", "text", "number" and currency", and (I assume) that asa result of this Numbers doesn't necessarily interpret data as being the format that you think it is.  Here's an example:
The basic data recorded is jobs quoted out, including engineer, quote date, and amount.
One of the tables shows an analysis of value quoted per engineer per month, using SUMIFS.  This matches data on engineer initials and date.
The quote date is in a cell whsoe column is formatted as a date.
The quote amount is in a cell whose column is formatted as currency.
One engineer did a vewry big quote - and I noticed that thsi value was not showing up in the analysis table.
I selected each column in turn and set the format of the colium, this did not make any diference.
I cheecked (without changing anything) that the values for date and quote vaue were sensible -they were.
Then I retyped the data for date and quote value.  I retyped exactly the same values that were there before.
Bingo - now the analysis shows the correct amnounts.
The conclusion is clearly that that the carrency and date values weren't matching the SUMIF as expected.  This is undeniable.
It is a fact that retyping the data fixed it, one can speculate that the formatting of th cell had somehow become borked for some hiostorical reason, when new data was entered the format as forced to whatever the colium format was set to.  (we know from experience that even if you set the format for a column, individual cells in the colum can still have a different format if Numbers thinks this is what you intended)
The problem is that, whatever the reason, Numbers gave me the wrong numerical result.  The raw data was displayed perfectly Ok with nothign at all to warn me of a problem.  The error was silent.  Therefore, I cannot trust what Numbers is telling me.  I cannot think of any way to check whether or not this sort of error is occuring...it was jut chance that I noticed on this occasion.
In how many other placesis Numbers silently giving me the wrong answer?
What about hundreds of other Numbers spreadsheets that I have used for quoting jobs - how do I know that these are numerically accurate?
It is quite scary to have built up a big intellectual investment in Numbers, and then to discover that is is unreliable.
Apple, of course, do not respond to feedback from me requesting a contact.
Clearly no-one should be using Nukber for mission-critical applications.
What are the alternatives?   I have avoided Excel for many tyears, ever since I lost a few days' work when it corrupted a file for me!  but these days Excel is so well established and in common use that I guess it can't be that bad any more.....can it?  And I suppose that it can;t have the same sort of errors that i find in Numbers.....peopple woudl have noticed by now, wouldn;t they??
the real answer is that no one shoudl be using spreadsheets for busioness critical applciations - theyare just too dangerous, to difficult to get demonstrably right, too easy to break by accident.  When I can find time I am going to replace all the above with a Filemaker database.
Any thoughts or experiences from anyone else?
Any chance of this post not getting deleted?

Hi Luke,
Chances of the post surviving or being deleted depend mostly on an interpretation of whether it fits the terms of use for Apple Support communities.
I cheecked (without changing anything) that the values for date and quote vaue were sensible -they were.
Then I retyped the data for date and quote value.  I retyped exactly the same values that were there before.
Bingo - now the analysis shows the correct amnounts."
I suspect that the previous change you mentioned may have altered the Date and Time value (the 'date value' you name) into something Numbers did not recognize as a Date and Time value when the column was reformatted to Date and Time, show date only. Retyping "exactly the same value as was there" displayed would remove any extraneous bits, permitting recognition as (the date part of) a Date and Time value, and allowing Numbers to recognize the row as one that should be included in the SUMIF. The case might be similar for the quote value in that row, although I think this would be less likely. If you changed both before checking the result of that change, there's little chance of discovering what caused the amount to be disregarded in the calculations.
"There are a few dozen analysis sheets many with lots of instances of some quiet complex formulae,  Numbers is creaking at the seams, it takes 30 seconds just to open the file."
Numbers is not speedy, particularly with quite complex formulas (and many of them). Part of the issue in Numbers '08 and '09 is that every change in a table triggers a recalculation of the whole table. That issue has been at least partially addressed in Numbers 3, where the recalculation appears to not extend to the full tableeach time there's a change, but to only th cells affected by the change.
"...Excel is so well established and in common use that I guess it can't be that bad any more.....can it?"
Excel has been "well established and in common use" for many years now. That alone, though, can't be relied upon as definitive evidence that "it can't be bad;" only that many copies of it have been sold and installed, many people use it, and files saved in a format it can open can be opened and read by many people. Whether it's "good" or "bad" (or should be described in more emphatic terms toward either end of this range) depends on the user, her purpose in using it, and how well that user feels it fits that purpose. (My personal take on it is that Excel does the jobs I've used it for well, but that I have used it infrequently enough that I have not learned where things (text size, data formatting, etc.) are found.
But I'm not you, and my needs are not your needs. The standard advice applies: Use the tool that fits the job. That's fairly common advice in these discussions.

Barry

  • It's Official BT HomeHub 3 is not fit for purpose!

Having struggled with BT HomeHub 3 both Series A and B since April and May it is now official.  BT have completley resigned their responsablityies and promises of supplying the latest technology and lightening speeds if you use their HomeHub 3.  They will still stand by their contractual obligations over speeds but fall back on the old chesnut that speeds are dependent on other factors but only if you are using a network cable to your hub.....
Technical Support told me in July that I would be better off getting my own hub at a cost to myself as they couldn't help me.  Recently I tried the BT hub again and speeds vary vastly from WiFi and Cable:
    Wifi:-
    Cable:-
I contacted Technical support and they confirm that they know of the issue, but haven't told customers, but they have referred the matter to Open Reach as they are their hardware supliers.
They knew of the issues from May 2012 so why is it now October and the issue has not been fixed.  They still advise that because of their failure I should go and buy £140 worth of my own kit to replace their sub-standard kit.
I wonder if Trading Standards have heard of the issue and the Advertising Standards Agency have seen their 'Big Boy' Adverts?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    DavidM,
Thanks for the offer but I have spent over 10 hours on the phone about these issues since April and have it been confirmed by second line support in India that the hubs are not fit for purpose.  I am an IT Professional myself and am probably a pain in the side for your first line as they are only script readers not IT people.  Once I had run my own tests on the hub, Db, Frequency hopping etc... I knew it was the hub and not the setup.  One of BT Support's problems is they don't support Linux.... only Windoze and Mac...  Strange as the hubs and all your routers, servers etc. use Linux but they obviously don't understand that serious computer people, generally, only use Windose to fix client's front end issues or if a client insists on it.  Anyway, second line support did understand and the issue is confirmed officially as of yesterday.
"Buy your own hub as ours don't work as advertised"
There is little point in contacting you to go round the roundabout a few more times it is just that many of your customers have these issues and they are banging their heads in frustration as not all appear to suffer the issues.  OpenReach are no doubt dragging their feet on the issue as it is a very expensive mistake unless a firmware update can fix it.

  • Not Fit for Purpose in the 21st Century

    BT
As someone who is on one hand fortunate enough to live in a semi rural area, and also unfortunate enough to live in a semi rural area. I have no other option open to me to use any other network (and I mean network) than BT's.
Having to suffer copper pair over a 4km line to the exchange is one thing. However over the past decade yes 10 years nothing has been done to the line or exchange that warrants me paying full price for a service that is no different to how it was late last century.
I therefore state that your network that "does" carry Voice as well as data is not "Fit for Purpose". I know you will continue to ignore the crys from the rural community for even ADSL2 to be implemented so we can at least try to get better data thruput.
We are now well into the 21st century yet I have to suffer last century technology.
    1) Why should we as rural customers be subgected to higher cost. Yet still see no benefits of higher costs?
    2) Why is it difficult for you to recify problems when all voice and data is carried by BT network?
    3) That you continue to supply services that is not possible for all you customers to take advantage of even though I as a rural customer (with no other options) pay money to ?
    4) Do you believe that "POT LUCK" on your exchange when moving is an acceptable response in the century?
You can no longer hide behind the fact you believe it is "Fit For Purpose" when the purpose of providing a connection has moved away from a simple POTS to much more than that. And this has been so for well over a decade.
It is no longer acceptable just to say "sorry" when more and more every household and busnesses rely on a stable and fast connection speeds.
I and many others feel more and more ripped off and left behind in your cavalier attitude to your customers in areas that you know full well have no other option thyan to use your outdated and frankly poor network.
Please answer these questions without once saying "Sorry" as it no longer washes with me and many others.

    a_c_g_t,
Unfortunately there does seem to be a few issues that may hinder or try to slow the progress in improving services at your exchange.
Firstly at a footprint of approx 386 property then BT Wholesale may not yet see any commercial benefit of upgrading the exchange to the 21cn network. Also if it's a small "shed" exchange (We have some round us that are just like a garden shed) then it may not be able to house the new equipment in it's current state.
Again your exchange has not been unbundled by other ISPs/CPs which would allow them to install their own equipment at the exchange, possible again down to commercial reasons or there isn't enough space in the exchange to install the equipment or the backhaul infrastructure isn't their or won't currently support it.
Parts of the exchange area is "Under Evaluation" under the Connecting Devon & Somerset BDUK programme, though other parts are out of the programme.
Also having a look the exchange area it seems to be mainly Exchange Only lines over a large-ish sparse area, meaning that FTTC may not be justified as not a big enough percentage of properties will be able to get FTTC (if lines were re-routed, a PCP cab built and a DSLAM cabinet installed and linked to that PCP). Again re-routing the lines may be less cost effective than alternative solutions (eg FTTP, though again may not be cost effective, or a wireless solutions may be a better idea).
Also if the exchange is too small to house the new infrastructure or the backhaul network isn't up to scratch then the fibre may come from a neighbouring exchange, however at the moment there doesn't seem to be that many exchange in the area that have fibre.
In your case I would contact your MP (and get neibours and villagers to do so to) regarding trying to get fibre or at least the 21cn network (ADSL2/2+) in your exchange area.
I would also try to contact Connecting Devon and Somerset via https://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/contact-us/ to see if they can give you any more info as to if your area is within scope and is a NGA area, if not to see if you can arrange a community meeting with them, the village and your MP.
In the sort term, is their any fixed/non-fixed wireless providers in the area? or satellite broadband?
Hope that all makes sense and is slightly helpful.
    Best of luck

  • Transaction launcher not working for custom business role

    Hi Experts,
I am facing a very weird problem where the transaction laucher define for BOR transaction is working for one business role(Z business role Customized one) but its not working for other business role (Z business role).
to emphasize further we have the code:-
    case ls_attributes-object_type.
        when lc_z23 or lc_z25.
          lv_logical_link = lc_ZITISU.
        when lc_BUS2000115.
          lv_logical_link = lc_ZITERP1.
        when others.
          lv_logical_link = lc_ZITERP2.
      endcase.
      l_if_navigation = cl_crm_ui_navigation_service=>get_instance( me ).
      IF l_if_navigation IS BOUND .
Navigate to transaction launcher using link id
        l_if_navigation->navigate( iv_link_id = lv_logical_link ).
      ENDIF.
in this the logical link is is lc_ZITISU whenever this BSP application is called from both the business roles but in  one the window opens up for BOR transaction whereas when we login again using different business role the code is the same as given above. I mean the sam logical link id is used and navigated to but window is not opening for transaction launcher as it happens for the previous business role.
Request your help to resolve this issue.
    Thanks,
    Rajwin

    Hi,
I tried by applying the PFCG role id of business role which was working to the business role id of the one for which it wasn't working and then try testing whether the transaction launcher is triggering. But the transaction launcher screen is still not opening even after doing this.
Probably there's something else too which is causing the problem. Request your inputs on this,
    Thanks,
    Rajwin

  • IOS4 not fit for purpose (at present..)

I have NEVER had an issue with Apple. Love my iMAC and (until the new OS) loved my 3GS.
However, since upgrading it is running considerably slower. Opening App's take a good 10-20 secs longer at times and it is 'jerky' and seems to stick when I perform normal, day to day operations (text, e-mail, contacts etc)
Today it had trouble with the unlock AND, on two occasions I was unable to answer a call as the touch screen was just unresponsive.
Yes, I know people (the majority of the time) will only post if they have something bad to say BUT, this appears to be a BIG problem for many people who have updated to iOS4.
Apple need to be made aware of this and deal with it ASAP. Make me wonder how much pre-testing there actually was? At present, it's not really 'fit for purpose' and if there is anyway to downgrade back to the previous OS, I would without hesitation.
An update to address the issues would be appreciated.

I was under the impression that (in the UK at least!) the EULA is irrelevant as your statutory rights would take precedence. The _Sale of Goods Act of 1979 as amended in 2003_ states:
    14. Implied terms about quality or fitness
    (1) Except as provided by this section and section 15 below and subject to any other enactment, there is no implied term about the quality or fitness for any particular purpose of goods supplied under a contract of sale.
    (2) Where the seller sells goods in the course of a business, there is an implied term that the goods supplied under the contract are of satisfactory quality.
(2A) For the purposes of this Act, goods are of satisfactory quality if they meet the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking account of any description of the goods, the price (if relevant) and all the other relevant circumstances.
(2B) For the purposes of this Act, the quality of goods includes their state and condition and the following (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods—
    (a) fitness for all the purposes for which goods of the kind in question are commonly supplied,
    (b) appearance and finish,
    (c) freedom from minor defects,
    (d) safety, and
    (e) durability.
If something therefore becomes 'not fit for purpose' one would assume that it's a simple matter of mentioning to Apple/your mobile provider that it's in breach of the act above and a solution needs to be found before you contact Consumer Direct about the process for the Small Claims Court.

  • IChat AV - not fit for purpose

I love Apple stuff. I love the way stuff just works.
But iChat AV is the fly in the ointment. The sand in the vaseline, the worm in the Apple.
Take a look through this forum and see just how many people can't even make a connection. This is just unacceptable, If iMovie failed with an obscure message every time you connected a camcorder, it would get fixed. Garageband does not need a two page explanation of which keyboard settings work. iDVD does not spontaneously fail claiming that the user did not insert a DVD.
iChat needs re-engineering to make it more robust - or at the very least it should provide more help when it fails.
Networking is tough. Firewalls make it tougher.
Yep it is. But Skype works through almost any firewall. It makes only outward connections. iChat could adopt a different model of networking and avoid the problem which makes it so unreliable. I want iChat to work in a hotel room. I need it to work behind an office firewall. Telling the user to open ports on the router is NOT a solution.
"Hello, it that the hotel manager? Dude could you open some ports in your firewall? I need to say goodnight to my kids."
Telling the user to check preference settings in Quicktime should not be necessary either. It's an Apple product - it should not need technical support.
iChat does not explain what the problem is.
If iChat is going to require the user to indulge in router voodoo, it should have the courtesey to diagnose the problem.
    Instead we get:
"user did not respond" - hint - he did.
"insufficient bandwidth" - hint - there was plenty
    and so on.
We need: "port XXXX was not open for incoming UDP traffic."
We need a "diagnose connection" button.
I have a degree in computer science. If I can't get it to work, what hope is there for the rest of mankind.
Test addresses - what are they good for?
Apple should provide test addresses that mean something. I can connect to appleu3test01. I can watch the video! My buddy can connect to the same server. We both see video. Yay - We both have working iChat configurations. Until we connect together and blam - "user did not respond".
Poll - When is this going to get fixed?
    1) Never - iChat is only for home use with people with Airport routers. It works for them - everyone else can swivel. Sorry.
    2) Soon - Apple is licencing the Skype technology and creating a super sexy skype client with HD Video!
    3) Never - Apple knows that when Skype 2.0 finally appears with video on the Mac - everyone will migrate and iChat can be phased out.
    4) Real soon now. The next version of iChat will feature an "order new router" button.
If you think this post has merit, please respond and someone might notice.
    Glyn

    H Windyriver,
For a large number of people using iChat with PC buddies there are no issues.
The people posting here are the ones that come across problems.
    <hr>
Slightly on the more general theme.
Most people want something that works like a web browser.
Most people accept that not all web pages work properly without always knowing why.
The Browser companies claim all sorts abut their particular Browser and how compliant it is.
Ask any Web designer if they have to allow for different browsers doing different things ?
Look at HTML and CSS code that needs to be different for IE on a PC Or this one that needs javascript to do in some browser that others don't need.
It is a concept change that is needed.
iChat is more like an On-line game. It needs your equipment to be set up to allow it to work.
What most people ignore is that SO does AIM
AIM 5.5 and 5.9 instructions and
    http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html
Apple and AIM have a contract for allowing .mac names to work on the AIM service --
So why doesn't the new Triton work with iChat ?
AIM/AOL are the people re-doing their app. Whose problem does that make it ?
AIM for moving the goal posts ?
Or apple for not keeping up ?
Remember that iChat is a third party AIM client. Apple have already made it work with the AIM and Jabber services.
    It's not all bad news
I have a G4/1Ghz Dual at the bottom of the specs for multichat with only a 64VRAM card and 256RAM in it.
My interenet connection is 1Meg down and 256k up.
This upload speed is below the iChat min for multichats But I can.
The min speed for an internet connection for any 1-1 video chat is 100k but the connection will often highligh that you have dropped below this and the chat is still connected.
Ecamm.com are out there busy pushing the boundaries of iChat specs and other Add-ons.
Please keep posting constructive comments and posting them to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html
Remember it may be easier to say
" Can I have a routing log in the iChat error messages ?"
Rather than "iChat does not work it's your fault !!"
The people on these boards are other users willing to help ofr at least offer up ideas that will help the situation you find yourself.
We do not work for Apple.
We won't always say whether we agree or not with any satements about the product.

  • Why are Apple Maps so terrible? Not fit for purpose, an absolute disgrace!!!

I am pretty furious about the extremely poor quality of the Apple Maps and I really don't believe that they are fit for purpose and should not have been launched with iOS6.
Maybe they work in the US but in the UK they are terrible, London looks great, but everywhere else is a blurry mess, and even major cities such as Nottingham where I live are unrecognisable, covered in a blanket of cloud!
Come on Apple, this is not on either get it fixed or get Google Maps back.
I am seriously hoping that Google launch a Map App.
I have been a long term Apple fan, currently have an iPhone 4 (5 being delivered tomorrow) and and iPad 3... but I will reconsider future purchases if iOS is not sorted... don't even get me started on YouTube!

  • Service item not relevant for pricing if used with higher level item catego

    Hi,
We have a service item e.g S900 with Item category ZTAD.
This line Item automatically creates a Service Order.
Requirement is , if this service item is used with an Equipement Item,
    Item 10 --> Equipment
    Item 20 --> Service
--> There would be price required for the Equipment ( Condition type ZPRO - Mandatory )
--> System should not ask for the price of Service Item, as it would be inclusive in the Equipmetn charges.
--> In short if the Service item is used as Sub item with Equipment, it is not relevan for pricing.
I tried copying ZTAD and creating a new item cateogry which is not relevant for pricing...would that be the correct approach, but facing several issues related to Automatic Service order generation.
what could be possible ways to achieve above.
    Regards
    Trupti Deulkar

    Hi,
System will ask the price for  item category TAD bcoz service also chargble,in your case insted of TAD use TANN as free,
You can define based on your higher level item category  for Ex : OR + Normusage(Blank)Higherlevl item (Blank)= TAN
you can config like this  ORNormUsge(Blank)  + TAN = TANN
like this you can do it this correct way or els you can manually enter the item catagory (TANN) at sale order line item level.
    Thanks

  • How many drive replacements before computer considered not fit for purpose

My Optical drive on my £2500 MacBook Pro has failed for the 3rd time and whilst I am sure my local Mac centre will fix it again I am beginning to feel that my Macbook Pro isn't fit for purpose.
Has anyone else managed to have one replaced for repeated Optical Drive Failures?
    Cheers
    NIck

I had multiple fails but also some other problems - I'm not sure if that helps, but they did swap the machine, so it is possible. But you need some luck in finding the right person to help you in the Apple Store.
I bought a Macbook Pro in 2007... put simply, it was a total lemon. 2 superdrive failures, the screen went, logic board, keyboard, plus RAM problems. And Apple would simply not replace it. Repair after repair. Back and forward to the Apple Store, wasting days of my life - and getting that "scratched record" response that they wouldn't replace it was so frustrating.
In the end, I just got the right employee at the right time, and I'm afraid its as arbitrary as that. The guy worked in the Regent Street store, and he had dealt with me a few times. He instructed me to come back with all my repair paperwork (so make sure you keep all yours). So I came in with 6 repair documents and they swapped the machine. It was a final Superdrive failure that triggered the eventual swap.
Alas the next machine did not fare much better - TWO MORE Superdrive failures, a keyboard, case and two screens. Rubbish.
I just bought (reluctantly) a new i7 MacBook Pro - and guess what - Yep, the optical drive DOESN'T READ CDs!!! Spits them out. Straight out of the box and AppleCare are telling me to take it into a store to get it fixed.
Seems that quality has dropped through the floor. I hope you get sorted out.

Tools Advanced setting is on auto spell check but has not worked for months - yes it had worked, probably for years. Looking at gmail for an auto spell checker I see that it leaves that to one's browser - Firefox.

Your More system details list doesn't show the en-GB dictionary.
If you do not have the en-US locale then check that you have a dictionary installed (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and selected.
You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.<br />
Also make sure that [X]"Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick.<br />

    Hi Gurus,
Checks are maintained manually. I have maintained check lots for payments for each bank to ensure that the check number matches with the physical checks. Check number 123456 is used for withdrawal of cash. However When I am posting a check receipt entry in FBCJ, the check number is not being picked from the check lot.

Cr. HDFC Bank.    No check number is shown in the document generated.
When I make a payment to the vendor from F-58 the system is picking up check number 123456 for vendor payment.
Is it possible to pick up the check number from the check lot while making contra entries for cash withdrawal from Bank?
    How to resolve this issue?
Should I remove the check lots numbers? If yes, How to enter the check numbers to match the Physical Checks?
    Please Help.

  • Transaction launcher not working for custom business role in WEB UI

    Hi Experts,
we have maintained a link for activity reports in web Ui which triggers a program Z_CRM_TIME_REPORT . we have maintained the logical links and assigned them to the custom business role. when we run the program in SE38 in GUI its working fine but we are facing the problem when we click the link in WEB UI we get a different screen related to BP and not the activity report.Kindly suggest what are the configuration need to be tested.
    Thanking you,
    Deepa

My guess would be that the parameter stated in the logical link (navigation bar customizing) that you use is incorrect. This should be the name of the transaction launcher definition you have maintained.
Otherwise, check the transaction launcher wizard to see that the report is maintained correctly.
    Hope this helps.

  • Fitness for Shortest path using a genetic algorithm

    Hi.
    I have this problem:
I'm doing a program that has a map and two points. the map has wall that are not valid positions.
I have used a A* algorithm to calculate the shortest path and is working fine.
now i'm implementing a genetic algorithm to solve the problem but i'm not having sucess.
My genetic operator are directions (left, right, up and down).
I'm not being able to find a goodfitness function to solve the problem.
can someone tell me a god function or here I can found information about that?
I have been searching on google and I have not yet had sucess.
I have tryed two diferent fitness tecniques:
    - add 1 for each step and if it finds a wall or gets out of the map add the maximum value (mapsize*mapsize).
    - the other one is add the valid steps and if it finds a wall or gets out of the map add the number of necessary steps to gets to destination. the valid steps has a weight of 30% and the necessary steps has a weight of 70% (i have tryed to use diferent weight).
    Can someone help me?
    thanks

How about adapting your TSP code as follows. Your graph G(V, E) has two special vertices: v_s and v_d (start and destination). Let a candidate solution consist of a permutation of V\{v_s, v_d}u{v_m} where v_m is a new marker vertex whose purpose is to allow you to treat part of the candidate solution as irrelevant. Given candidate solution v_0 v_1 v_2 ... v_n v_m v_n+1 ... the weight is c(v_s, v_0) + c(v_0, v_1) + ... + c(v_n-1, v_n) where c(v_a, v_b) is the cost of the edge ab.

  • E75 - Not fit for purpose!

I started out as a happy chappy when my company decided to ditch the Orange SPV650 (Win Mobile) and go with a good quality Nokia device.  I mean longer battery life and a smarter looking phone is a start.
So I get landed with 30 x E51 and 30 x E75.  Both phones will need to communicate with our 2003 Exchange email system.  The E51 with the MfE package installed have worked perfectly.  The E75 is a different kettle of fish.  In fact I would probably get more out of a kettle of fish.
So what problems am I getting with the  E75?
MfE - Says it's connected but will not show any activitiy for several hours.
MfE - When it does get email, it is very slow and can cause the phone to "just reboot". I understand there might be a memory leak.
I leave the phone on overnight and return to find that the timezone has changed from UK to Algiers.  Why??
Messing with Wifi settings causes the phone to crash.
After configuring MfE it can take at least 3 minutes to power on the phone.
Of the first 8 phones I have configured 2 seem to work ok but the rest are buggy as hell.  It seems to me that the user who uses email and calendaring heavily has no hope of a stable phone.
This is all on firmware 100.48.78.  When can we expect new firmware?  I'll try it if it has any possibility to improve this abortion of an OS currently on the phone.
Please Nokia, please can you take a look and sort it out.  What looks like a good business phone is let down on it's stability and inability to communicate to me what the device is doing.  If you look at the MfE package installed on the E51 it tells you where it is in the sync process.  The E75 just says it is connected.  Why did you have to build MfE into the firmware?
Very dissapointed with Nokia and it seems to have confirmed the stories I have heard about shoddy software QA.
    Now who wants 30 x E75 phones?

Some updates to the ongoing saga with this E75 phone.
    1.  A phone call to Nokia Care asking if there are any upcoming fixes for this phone was fruitless.  The supervisor says that Nokia will not directly support companies with less than 200 phones.  Our only chance is to visit a local care centre.  A phone call to the care centre and the employee is unsure if there is anything that they can do.  They would like to see a phone but no guarantee on a fix.  All I want to know is if a new firmware is imminent.
    2.  MfE works well if you are logged into your workstation.  As soon as you logout of your PC the MfE sync fails.  Here is a snippet of logfile taken from the phone showing it working and then the user leaving to go home.

    How weird is that??
    3.  The phone is great when you first start using it.  It becomes a completely unstable phone that crashes at random times once you configure MfE.  With MfE configured, a phone powerup takes over 3 minutes, you get memory low messages at powerup, menus take an age to draw and the screen can freeze at anytime for a good 30 seconds.  It's unusable.
    4.  If you remove the MfE configuration then the phone returns to a good working device.
It looks like a good business phone and our Management like the size, shape and styling.  If only MfE worked.  Why did Nokia have to integrate MfE into the firmware and **bleep** it all up.
    5.  I have tried RoadSync instead of MfE and this works as expected.  The phone is good and fast.  All email, contacts, calenders and tasks work correctly and our heaviest user accounts have not caused the phone any memory errors.  But why should I have to pay $50 for RoadSync when MfE is free and has better intergration when it works?
Please Nokia, sort out this phone.
We have until the 8th August to accept or reject this phone from our supplier and at the moment we are rejecting unless a fix is imminent.

  • Adobe FormsCentral RoadMap/Life Expectancy - Planning for Critical Business Use

Adobe FormsCentral is quite a nice little interface to use, however my worries lie in it functionality for businesses that may try to rely on it to record critical day to day movements.
I plan to commit some time to building such tools and love the ease of use with FormsCentral but I worry that what we have may be all we can expect because it is essentially built with a dying IP... Flash...
I would love to see a feature roadmap in order for me to make a stronger commitment to Adobe vs Formstack - I would eventually have 35+ users in one building alone subscribing to adobe but Formstack seems to be the way to go (viewing results on both iOS and Android devices etc).
Is there a roadmap to at least guarantee the life expectancy of Forms Central?
Is there something more concrete we can look forward to as far as mobile technology goes?
Our business operates on a mixture of both Apple and Microsoft machines and iOS/Android mobile devices - Me, I have more OS X/iOS device than i do windows/android.
If I had of known about Formstack, I probably would've gone with that before he adobe product as the features are more promising - Any feedback would be great!
    Thanks!!!

    Hi Colin,
We'll try and answer your technology and roadmap questions
the best we can, but as you probably already know, as a corporate
policy, Adobe does not publicly disclose timing, dates, etc.
If you have specific questions regarding scaling, features,
etc. (such as the topic on recordings which was posted a little
    while back), let us know.
    Regards,
    Fang
