OS 10.4.8 and MDD
With all the recent discussion on Macintouch about problems with OS 10.4.8, it seems most of the problems were with the Intel Macs. Has anyone experienced problems with Power Mac G4 MDD or FW800 and 10.4.8? I have not upgraded, yet and have been waiting to see what experiences others have had.

As a follow-up, I upgraded to OS 10.4.8 a few days ago and everything seems to be going well. It seems faster and no hangups. I used the repair permissions routine and installed with the combo download. I also disconnected all firewire devices, using the Wiebe Tech white paper recommendation, don't know if that makes a difference or not. I have upgraded many times without disconnecting them.
This forum has certainly helped me over the years. I hop it helps others as well.

I'm a bit confused on the question. It sounds like you just want to provide some navigational elements and expand your application past what the wizard creates and the answer is yes you absolutely can. Take a look at the sample application or any of the applications on the studio.

ADC displays, 10.4.11 and MDD
I've been running a dual 1.25 PowerMac G4 with a 23" Cinema display (ADC) for about 8 years now without a single hint of trouble. No room for the 23" ADC monitor on my desk anymore (making room for 30" w/MacPro), so I picked up a 17" ADC Studio display and wall-mounted it (actually, I have two of these).
Trouble is, my MDD G4 refuses to turn on with either 17" ADC Studio display connected. (LED only blinks once, machine never goes on.) The 23" Cinema works perfectly (as always) and a 15" ADC Studio display works, too. Both 17" ADC Studio displays work fine connected to an old G4 Cube, but both prevent my MDD from starting up. I always thought any Apple ADC display would work on the G4 MDD - no? What makes the 17" Studio displays different? Video card is the OEM ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (1 ADC, 1 DVI).
What am I missing? All four displays work, only the combination of MDD and 17" Studio display fails....?Tried to startup from a great old SCSI drive running OS9, Monitors CDEV set to proper resolution, etc.
Computer's power button LED only lights when pressed, nothing else happens.
It's a hardware issue, simultaneous with two identical 17" ADC Studio Displays? I have an ADC to DVI converter, but what's the point of trying that? So..... why do they both work perfectly when plugged into a (10.3) G4 Cube?! Maximum partition size for external hard drives with G4 MDD?
I have a Maxtor 300GB external hard drive. When I initially formatted it, I did so with 4 partitions because I knew there was a limit that G4s recognized with internal hard drives. Is that the case with externals as well or can I reformat it to be one large external drive?
Hi, what G4 model do you have? Only the Quicksilver 2002's and MDD's + MDD FW800's don't suffer from the 128GB capacity. In fact, in any of the above G4s, you can put up to 144 petabytes.

Powermac g4 shuts down during start up after installing Leopard and upgrade
I have a powermac g4 (agp), 1ghz, 120gig hd
I successfully installed Leopard. After install the updater came up so I updated the files. I think they were OSX update, quicktime, itunes, and a couple of others I can't recall. I was prompted to restart for updates and when I did it will get to the white screen with the grey apple and spinning wheel then it just shuts off. I have tried to start it up several times and it does the same thing each time. I can't start with the leopard disk since I can't get the dvd drive to open without it running. I've looked at other similar posts on this subject but don't see any that are similar to mine. Any help would be appreciated.Hi, Claire -

Couple of ways to work around that -
• Restart or boot the machine, immediately press the mouse button, keep it held down. This is a hardware command to the Mac to eject all removable media, which should open the drive tray. Insert the disk and close the tray, restart and press the C key.
• Try restarting or booting the machine, then immediately press the Option key (ideally before or simultaneous with the startup chime), keep it held down. This should bring up Startup Manager (a vivid blue screen with a few large icons showing). Once Startup Manager has fully loaded, press Command-. (Command-PeriodKey). This should open the optical drive tray. Insert the Leopard disk and close the tray; wait a bit for the drive to spin up; then click the circular arrow icon on the left. This will cause the machine to rescan the available buses and find the Leopard disk. Once that has displayed, click it to select it and then click the straight arrow icon on the right. It should now boot to that disk.

The fastest G4 (AGP), aka "Sawtooth", machine shipped was 500MHz. If your machine is 1GHz, then it has either had a processor upgrade, or it is a later model. It helps us to know which it actually is. These articles can help you identify it -

The fact that it may have an AGP graphics card does not make it a G4 (AGP), or Sawtooth, model - all G4's after the G4 (PCI) model shipped with AGP graphics cards, including the Quicksilver and MDD models. -

i Want to upgrade my powermad g4 MDDs grephics card, i had a Radeon X700 laying around and when i put it in , the system won't turn on, other garphics cards also do this, like the geforce fx 5200, it actualy turned on with a GF2 Titanium pc eddition, but how do i make the radeon x700 work on my mac, (i can flash the card if nessicary)
Some good comments. A couple of cards I've tried in both MDD867 (Nadav good call, they still rock!!) and MDD 125 (2MB of L3 Cache????!!)
ATI 9600 - 64MB from first gen G5 - similar to 5200 in age I guess.
I got one for $10USD, taped up pins 3 and 11 and core image cheap voila!! Far faster than the standard card ATI 9000.

What specific model G4 do you have? The designation "Power Mac G4 version 2.1" is insufficient to identify it, since v. 2.1 has been used for several models, including both Quicksilver and MDD machines. The CPU (machine) speed can help narrow it down. This Apple KBase article can help identify it -

...I get a "the software can not be installed in this computer" message.
That message is often returned when a disk set that came with a machine is used on a different model. The disk sets that come with a machine are usually specific to that model; they do not have a universal installer, so rarely are able to install on a different model.
You should be using a retail (separately purchased) disk set for Tiger (OSX 10.4). -

I've seen and read a lot about using atx power supplies in the g4 MDD. Found some with a 20 & 24 pin connector. Even found extensions from 20 pin to 24 pin. So besides the rewiring and I know it wont fit in the stock location but rather by the speaker and above the cd/dvd drive, Which model/ brand fits?
I've have yet to see anyone list an actual ATX model and/ or brand that fits?
Love to know which one so I don't have to buy and test fit many, or are they all the same size?

None of them "fit", though they can be stuffed into the MDD case.
All ATX PSU's are of similar size, as that is part of the ATX standard.
Interesting to note that there aren't really any performance updates, heat comparisons, etc. with these mods. The ATX PSU is not designed to compliment airflow through the interior of the MDD case.
The linked individual did note, and rightly so, that there are PCI card issues, as the ATX case encroaches into the space where PCI cards are when the side panel is closed.
Also note that without a separate 28v power supply, ADC port equipped cards will not have ADC function.
Another problem often reported with modified QS and MDD machines, is the loss of power to the firewire bus on the logic board. -
I was reading some of the threads regarding the mic port on the MDDs (because I can't seem to get mine to work with the mics I have). Turns out the old Apple talk mic isn't compatible (no prob). Used 2 other newer mics, doesn't work (but they work on my...ahem...PC). Then I read something about "mic preamps" that you connect your mic to, to boost the voltage going into the port. But these are expensive, and completely pointless for day to day use.
No ordinary mic will work in the in-line port. Why is it like that with these MDDs. My older G4 never needed anything like that? I plugin any mic, and boom, it works.
I also read about iMic. But that connects via USB. So what's the point of having that line in port if you can't use it. Unless, of course, your willing to dish out some cash for preamps. All I want to do is talk with friends on-line via webcam, and use voice recog apps.
Anyone have a simpler alternative to get a mic working on this system? Perhaps a mic that's built specifically for the MDD.

G4 MDD Dual 1GB, 1.5GB ram, LG DVD-RW + Superdrive Mac OS X (10.4.8) 80GB, 120GB, 2x 250GB HDs, Radeon 9000 128MBWell, after some searching for these "mics with their own power supply", I have found out there is no such thing. The closest answer I've gotten is plugging a mixer (using a 3.5mm jack to RCA audio input jacks) to the available input port. And then plugging any old mic to that mixer/audio board.
That or the iMic. I don't like speaking ill will of Apple, and rarely do. But boo to them for this. Something as simple as using any mic (as you could with previous G4s), now becomes an expensive (not to mention unnecessary) venture.
Just wondering why Apple did this, and only for the Quicksilver and MDD models? Other than the obvious "cash cow".
Looks like I'll have to get a USB mic. The question now, is will ANY USB mic (not headset with mic) work on the MDD? -
Power Mac G4 (Dig Audio) Can't install OS 9.2.1
I'm having an issue with trying to install OS 9.2.1 on a PM G4. I boot from the CD, but when I get to the actual install phase, it stops and gives me a general error. The Disc itself is clean and I know it works (used it on my iMac G3). I'm using a freshly formatted HD.
I just had to replace the logic board battery, I don't know if that had anything to do with it. Is 9.2.1 even able to be installed on this mac? I also try OSX 10.3, but I get a broken folder icon. Hardware test says everything's peachy, but nada.
Strange thing, when I first boot to the OS9 CD, it tells me that there's a problem with the CPU. Does anyone know of a test that I can run from say an external HD since it only has one DVD drive?Nicholas Chase wrote:

I haven't make an 9.x installer in so long, I've forgotten. Basically you want to clone it say to a disc image (add the bits you need), then burn the image. There are special tricks in 9.x because you have to make sure the cloned system folder is blessed. Hopefully other in this thread who know the details will step up to answer that part.
I emailed Sonnet about the problem, but I have yet to hear back. If they can tell me which processor I have in here (if the system profiler is even telling me useful info about the cpu) I can get the right firmware update an it. problem one mentions some software needed to get proper reporting of the CPU speed.
Problem is I can't find the mentioned "Metronome" utility. My guess is that it's included in the "Crescendo/Encore Processor Upgrade Software". That's not a firmware update, looks like OS level support software.
If you can't get a stable Mac, do NOT try to upgrade the firmware of the CPU. That's asking for trouble; you could end up in a worse position than you are now, e.g. a messed up upgrade.
Sonnet tech support is pretty good, I've dealt with them in the past.
There may be a sticker on the card that can help identify the card. Indeed it may help to know which exact model is in there and what it looks like. With recent Sonnet upgrades, the heatsink is already attached as a single unit -- that's typically a good think since you don't have to worry about the heatsink/chip interface (thermal paste, etc). There was a time with some Sonnet's where you would reuse the existing heatsink; I'm not sure if those were ever available for the DA but raises issues of whether thermal paste/grease was properly applied.
For the moment do NOT attempt to remove the heatsink, you've gotta be sure which model you have before moving on.

I'm still pretty new to macs, but if the course of futzing with this one I've learned quite a bit. Still not enough to make an installer.
Just a question, but where did you get this Mac? Did you know ahead of time that it had a CPU upgrade in it? This sort of thing can matter, which unfortunately you found out.
I've done a lot of upgrading (incl. CPUs) and tinkering of a G3, DA, and MDD G4s. So some of the issues that can arise I still have somewhere in my brain -- I'll see what I can do to help you through this. Whenever I've done CPU upgrades, I've always kept the original CPUs just in case. In fact my DA 733 still works because I kept the original parts; the upgrade I stopped working at the end of last year. The seller of the Mac didn't happen to give you the original parts? -

FDMEE BefImport script for SQL source
Hi Experts ,
I am new to FDMEE and trying to implment it for our process which should pull the data from one of the SQL view and load into Essbase. I am trying to use the Open Interface table and hence trying to builde BefImport event script with help of admin guide exmple. I know i am missing manythings in following scripts but i m not sure about it , can anyone please help and guide me to build a correct befImport Event script please !!

Unable to load data from FDMEE staging table to HFM tables
Hi,
We have installed EPM 11.1.2.3 with all latest related products (ODI/FDMEE) in our development environment
We are inprocess of loading data from EBS R12 to HFM using ERPI (Data Managemwnt in EPM 11.1.2.3). We could Import and validate the data but when we try to Export the data to HFM, the process continuously running hours (neither it gives any error nor it completes).
When we check the process details in ODI work repository, following processes are completed successfully
COMM_LOAD_BALANCES - Running .........(From past 1 day, still running)
EBS_GL_LOAD_BALANCES_DATA - Successful
COMM_LOAD_BALANCES - Successful
Whereas we could load data in staging table of FDMEE database schema and moreover we are even able to drill through to source system (EBS R12) from Data load workbench but not able to load the data into HFM application.

I just bought a PowerMac G4 from eBay. I'm new to Macs and so far I haven't found much info on this model. It is an M5183, 733MHz, 512MB. I would like to upgrade the CPU. What are my options? What should I look for on eBay?

You select your Mac model and the brand of CPU upgrade you are considering and get a number of user reports on how the install went and how it works.
NOTE: When you select your Mac model, you probably should choose "Apple G4 AGP Slot" unless you know you have a dual processor model.
You might want to ask in the Apple forum for for older G4 desktops (yours is older than the late FW800s and MDDs covered in this area) to see if someone else has already performed such an upgrade on a machine like yours:

I'm a little confused about which model you really have at this point. The M5183 number returns a Powermac G4 (AGP graphics) that had a 400, 450, or 500 nHz processor. I wonder if yours was already upgraded once (doesn't affect future upgrades).
Look for extra stickers on the back and see if any have "M" numbers that end with capital L's, a slash (/) followed by another letter (example: M7825LL/A, M7825LL/B). Those may help narrow the search.
A good resource for Apple Specs and how they were configured is the MacTracker database. Its format is more consistent than Apples' specs sheet format, making it easier to cmpare models. It's free and it's here:

You can also run System Profiler (do "About this Mac" and click "More Info.." in the resulting window. On the first screen is "Hardware Overview." Copy/paste that (without the serial number) into a post here and that should precisely nail down your model.
