SCJP Studying problem

Hello all,
I am currently studying for the SCJP, however I am finding a MAJOR problem with studying. During the reading of the chapters, I manage to understand exectly what the book explains. I also experiment and try out things, however, when I come to make the small exam that each chapter offers, I get a very low mark. I would like to know if this is a typical thing that happens to everyone or if its me. Like for example.. I know an abstract class must be marked abstract and each method which is not going to be implemented must end with a semicolon and be marked abstract.... however I still manage to get the question wrong.. I feel I know the subject but during the exam, I flip.
Does this thing happen to any of you people? This is getting very boring and demotivating a lot!!
Thanks.. I need some CONSTRUCTIVE arguments or anything POSITIVE please :) (if you know what I mean hehe)

Learn to read and understand the questions as well as the material they cover.
Low scores if you know the subject under examination is almost always a result of not reading the question properly, either by being rushed (and thus not taking your time) or by a poor understanding of the language the questions are worded in (meaning English, not Java).
If you're also nervous (as you shouldn't be for a practice test in a book, but quite understandable during a real exam) things only get worse.

  • Example study problems for Labview

I've found 3 sample Labview study problems, on the NI website, that are intended to be used as practice tests for the CLD. These posts were the Traffic Light Controller, the Security System and the Car Wash problems.
Does anybody know of an area where I can find more LV example problems to practice with that are similiar in scope to these problems?

If you can solve the example exams that they provide in the 4 hour limit then you have a good chance of passing.  This means lock yourself in a room, start from scratch, and code for 4 hours straight and see what you have at the end of 4 hours.  It is not the same as programming 1 hour a day for four days.  Keep in mind that you need to read and follow the LabVIEW style guide to the best of your ability.  As it states on the sample exams:
    Programming style (15 points)
    Functionality (15 points)
    Documentation (10 points)
This means that you get 15 points (37.5%) to make it work.  If you don't do the documentation or have good programming style you will fail.  Based on my personal experience if you have less than two years of solid LabVIEW then the prep course would be a good choice.  This assumes that you have good programming style and use all that is recommended in the exam and LabVIEW style guide.

  • Need SCJP study guide for java 5.0 by katherine sierra pdf

I am planning to prepare for SCJP 5.0 , can somebody please send me pdf copy of SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide by katherine sierra . please mail it to me at [email protected]

Since Sun is unwilling to moderate this forum they should close this certification forum.
Because as I see it they are setting themselves up for liability here as various criminals, thieves and lowlifes like the OP and the last two posters congeal together in a mass of ethicless slime.
There is a well established co-relation between the population seeking certification and copyright infringement and intellectual property theft and this is dealt with appropriately on other forums through moderation.
Since Sun has never and will never moderate these forums they should remove this forum because otherwise it aids and abets these criminals, and I would argue actively condones this morally appalling behaviour.
I would urge readers of this thread to submit feedback on this matter, as I shall also do but additionally I will be sending an email to the marketing department at Sun.

  • SCJP Practice Question

I'm working through the McGraw Hill SCJP study guide for Java 5, and I don't much care for the following question:
    (page 159)
    5. Select the two statements that best indicate a situation whit low coupling. (Choose two.)
    A. The attributes of the class are all private.
    B. The class refers to a small number of other objects.
    C. The object contains only a small number of variables.
    D. The object is referred to using an anonymous variable, not directly.
    E. The reference variable is declared for an interface type, not a class. The interface provides a small number of methods.
    F. It is unlikely that changes made to one class will require any changes in another.
    Answer:
E and F are correct. Only having access to a small number of methods implies limited coupling. If the access is via a reference of interface type, it may be argued that there is even less opportunity for coupling as the class type itself is not visible. Stating that changes in one part of a program are unlikely to cause consequences in another part is really the essence of low coupling. There is no such thing as an anonymous variable. Referring to only a small number of other objects might imply low coupling, but if each object has many methods, and all are used, then coupling is high. Variables (attributes) in a class should usually be private, but this describes encapsulation, rather than low coupling. Of course, good encapsulation tends to reduce coupling as a consequence.
I would have thought A and E were the answers here. If the attributes of a class are all private, you're going to have to use accessors and mutators to get to them, which is a prime example of loosely coupled code. I disagree that "F. It is unlikely that changes made to one class will require any changes in another." is a proper answer because although it does cut right to the heart of the matter, it does not describe the mechanism through which this feat has been accomplished and leads me to believe that perhaps the class has been designed with likely future changes in mind such that they will have a low impact but other unforseen changes may cause problems.
Am I out of line here?
    If so, please enlighten me!
If not, ... yarrrgh! If there are questions like this on the exam, I expect to have problems with them. Any suggestions? How can I get my reasoning to line up with the test, at least for the day of the exam? ;)
Thank you in advance for any assistance!

I think you're making a general mistake you have to come to terms with before you attempt the exam. You're reading stuff into the statements that aren't there. You must learn to consider the statements just as they stand and don't modify them in your mind.
    For example,
If the attributes of a class are all
private, you're going to have to use accessors and
mutators to get to them,That's not what the statement says. It says all attributes are private, nothing else.
it does cut right to the heart of the
matter, it does not describe the mechanism through
which this feat has been accomplishedWho said mechanisms must be provided? The statement cuts right to the heart of the matter as it stands.

  • Wanted: A Few Study Buddies

    Hello,
I'd like to take the SCJP 1.4 on January 13th. I've worked my way through most of the Sybex Complete Java 2 Certification Guide (Programmer's Exam), and this morning I purchased the WhizLabs 1.4 mock exam simulator.
    See: http://www.whizlabs.com/scjp/scjp-1.4.html
It costs $39.95 and they have a money-back guarantee: if you don't pass the SCJP, they refund your money. After taking the assessment test (there are over ten other tests, for a total of over 600 questions) and talking with some friends who have taken the SCJP, it appears that if you can do the WhizLabs tests, you'll do great on the actual SCJP.
If you're comfortable with Java and want to get certified in a hurry, I'd like to invite you to help a small group of us study for the next two weeks, every night, on IRC. To do this, you'd need to buy the WhizLabs SCJP simulator (it generates a machine-specific key so it's impossible to share), or at least bring sample questions from free mock tests to our jam sessions so that we can clarify confusing points and improve our skills.
My hope is that certification will help a bit in this incredibly tight job market, but beyond that, so far, studying for the SCJP has been a great way to learn things about the language that I might not otherwise have found out about for a very long time. It forces you to take a disciplined and systematic approach and is hopefully a good starting point for the SCWCD and SCJD (study for one of which will begin on
    January 14th ;-) ).
If you'd like to be part of the group and have the stamina to study a LOT (eat, sleep, breathe Java) over the next two weeks, please give me a holler in e-mail. I'm going to e-mail everyone who is interested tonight with the details, once we know how many people we'll have.
Also, for those of you who are interested, I'm the lead for the Skribe Open Source web journaling application currently under development. If you're interested in working on a very cool project, please have a look at http://dev.noumenaut.com. Also, since we have a forum dedicated to SCJP study, if you're interested in being study buddies, please go ahead and sign up so that you can access the forum and we have a common place in which to post messages, in addition to being able to have nightly jam sessions on IRC.
    Thanks Very Much!

"and want to get certified in a hurry"
Remember to tell that to all potential employers as they'll learn to appreciate the SCJP even more.

  • SCWCD for the Java Platform, CX-310-083 Book

    Hi everyone
Can you recommend a good book for SCWCD CX-310-083.
I've search on the web and found a couple:
    1. Head First Servlets & JSP, Second Edition
    2. Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam Study Guide.
I'm looking for a book which isn't to old, want to buy it.
I also want to know if some recommend going first for the SCBCD or the SCDJWS.

I am currently reading the Head First Servlets and JSP book in preparation for the SCWCD. It's written by Sierra and Bates, they wrote the previous SCJP Study Guide books and Sierra develops some of the exams.
Also, if you find a good book for either the SCBCD or the SCDJWS, please share. The books that are out there for SCBCD seem out dated (cover EJB 2.0).

  • Password required for pdfs normally read under Windows

For some pdfs which I seamlessly open under Windows, I get password prompt and finally without password they do not open.
I noticed that there are additional security options set on these documents, but still they do open in the Reader under Windows.
    How to open such files?

Yes, I am interested in this as well. I purchased a PDF document (SCJP Study Guide) for $30 from ePlanetLabs.com. The content is excellent and I began reading it on my PC.
Then I got the Nokia 9300. And, being on-the-go, I decided to move my e-book to it. The reader on the 9300 asks me for my password; which I provide and it accepts.
But most of the book is garbled in the reader. The only thing that I can read is the reminder on the top of all 40 pages:
SCJP 5.0 Certification Study Guide for Sun Certified Programmer
IMPORTANT NOTE: We did our best to develop this product. We are not responsible to meet highest quality of any one's high expectations. You purchased this eBook with your own risk and with your own interest, so we are not responsible for any of your dissatisfaction or concerns. Thanks for your purchase.
Well. This is nice. Adobe Reader is free. Nokia 9300 is a cost-item. And so is my eBook. But neither Adobe, Nokia nor ePlanetLabs will accept responsibility for being able to actually *use* my eBook.
It doesn't stop there, however. I ordered a book (in PDF) from campusebookstore.com; again, it reads fine on my PC. But on my Nokia 9300, Adobe Reader (1.1 Build 08202004) reports:
    --------- snip -------------
    ERROR:
This file is encrypted using an unsupported PDF encryption scheme.
    --------- snip -------------
I went back to my PC to determine what the file's properties are... and Poof! I cannot open it on my PC. Adobe Reader (7.0.8) reports:
    --------- snip -------------
    CANNOT OPEN DOCUMENT
This document cannot be opened because its ownership has not been established on this computer.
    (O) I own it and I copied it to this computer or restored it from a backup
() Someone else gave it to me and I would like to own it
    [Obtain Ownership] [Cancel]
    --------- snip -------------
Somewhere along the way (during the past 7 hours which I have spent trying to solve Adobe issues) I used the Adobe DRM Activator and apparently corrupted the initial Activator which was installed with my eBook. What frustration!
At this point in the technology... it seems that normal books are best; at least until Adobe can simplify life for the end-user with the same zeal which it has for protecting the sellers of eBooks.

  • What is ValidAssert()?  Why can't I find docs for this class?

I'm reading the Osborne SCJP study guide for Java 5. In the section on assertions, there is a line of sample code that reads:
assert (x == 1) : new ValidAssert();What is ValidAssert? I can't find the javadoc for this class on the Sun site, and I don't get any helpful results when I Google this class name. Can anyone tell me what I've missed here?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Sounds like the study guide defined it themselves and forgot to tell you about it!
There are two forms of the assert statement:
    assert booleanExpression;
assert booleanExpression : messageObject;I usually use the second version like this:
assert x > 0 : "You dummy! x is supposed to be positive and here it is "  + x;But you could define a class whose toString method formats the assertion error message.
That would be handy if you want to factor the message details out, if you
want to use message bundles to localize the messages, etc...

    Thanks,
RyanRyan, you already posted the same question here, then why are you posting the same thing in someone else's completely unrelated topic.
Coming to the original topic, A book like "SCJP Study Guide by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates" or "A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification by Khalid Mughal & Rolf Rasmussen" is a good source. In addition to that you can try free or commercial mock exams. The Kathy Sierra book comes with 3 sets of mock exams, don't know about Khalid Mughal book. Inquisition, Examlab are one of the few free mock exams...

  • Stupid question (but please answer)

    Hey all,
I have a question, it is probably extremely lame, but please resist laughing at me.
I have a desk in my house that I love to study, problem is that it is in the direct sunlight in the morning. Will it damage or warp my LCD display if I put the computer there near the window? I often leave my Acer there, however, it has a plastic body not an alumium one.
    Thanks,
    Stu

I doubt it will damage it; but a general rule is to keep LCDs (or any electronics) away from direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

    String<String>gt; on line 21
    and
putting multiple statements on the same line, like 21 and 22. Is this some kind of multiple assignment?
am I being stupid or is the code wrong?
many thanks for any help.See all the "gt;" and "lt;" thingies in your code? It seems that there went something wrong with your copy-and-pasting. Please try again.

You can try, but the iPhone warranty terms state that Apple "may" restrict warranty/service to country of original purchase...key word here is "may".
