Server Admin causes servermgrd crash: "got an empty response"

Starting a few days ago, when one OSXS system is accessed with Server Admin, the servermgrd process immediately crashes. Could there be some file that somehow got corrupted? I've run 'repair disk' and 'repair permissions', and even did a full Disk Warrior run on the boot drive to no avail. No other changes or upgrades were done to the system to prompt this.
Server Admin[357] Server got an empty response (servermgr_info may have crashed)
crashdump[444]: servermgrd crashed
According to the servermgrd man page, this might mean that /etc/servermgrd/getsslpassphrase is returning a null string (which it seems to do when run manually). But it could also be that getserial_numberinfo() is returning null.
Is there some system file I need to regenerate?
Thx
The crash dump has this:

If anyone has any ideas about what I can do, if there's a file that I might check for corruption, something I might try reinstalling, etc., that would be great.

  • " NetBoot got an empty response"

    Hi
New to OSX Server and having trouble with NetBoot for imaging clients. Have 10.4.3 server. It worked OK on first set up, although had lots of trouble starting NetBoot service, it wouldn't start, then just started later by itself.
When I first set it up I imaged about 60 clients, but noticed after a few days that when I open up Server Admin it takes maybe five minutes for SA to "refresh" and find all the info to display for the varioius services. Have DNS, DHCP both running.
If I restart it seems to clear everything and SA freshes in a few seconds, but if left for several days even if I don't use Netboot for imaging, it reverts to the very slow refresh. Clients can log in OK.
Now after imaging a client, I usually have a major problem. Today SA took ages to refresh when started and came up with an error for NetBoot. On opening the netboot log there was nothing there. Later SA quit comletely. A restart of the server seemed to clear things a bit but later when I tried to image a client it hung on the blue screen before the activation window appears.
I have now switched NetBoot off to see if it stops the problems with slow refresh of SA.
Below are some of the log files. Can anyone tell me what is happening and what does "an empty response" indicate?

    Several questions come to mind.
    1) Why are you using auto-login on the server. Ideally the server should run headless without any user logged in on the GUI. I realize that's not always practical, but it raises questions about how you're using the server.
    2) Most of the problems sound like they're related to directory services since that's where the user accounts are stored. How are you using directory services? Is the server standalone? part of an Open DIrectory domain? Some other domain? a Directory Master itself?
    3) Why are you using Retrospect? It's one of the buggiest piece of tra^H^H^H software around. I don't know anyone that's using it successfully on Mac OS X Server, and I've heard of several people whose problems have disappeared once they remove the software. May or may not be your problem, but it's an easy one to test in the short term.

Your NFS mounts (and service) appear to be fine.
Looking at your screenshot, you have a much larger problem than NetBoot & DHCP. The whole servermanager daemon looks like it's failing to run.
You are probably going to have to get someone to diagnose it live, or take it to an Apple Store.

  • Print Server - servermgrd/cups/Server Admin resource usage

We are running a 10.6.4 server who's sole purpose is managing print queues. There are 30+ printers being managed. It seems that after a certain number of printer have been added, Server Admin seems to bog down considerably. Looking in activity monitor, I notice that when I click in Server Admin -> Print -> Job Status (or Queues) cupsd and servermgrd hit 90%+ cpu usage and the Real Mem counter for servermgrd will count up until all available ram is used. The amount of ram in the server doesn't matter. It will use 4/8/16 gb if it is installed.

    Hi Guys,
I'm the main Mac developer here at PaperCut ( http://www.papercut.com/ ). I've seen exactly the same problem on our test 10.6 systems in here. Never any problems with the older versions. With many printers (say 50+) occasionally attempts to browse the list of print queues in Server Admin caused runaway CPU. The processes that go crazy are cupsd and servermgrd. After a few seconds (or if you have lots of printers, a cup of coffee) it settles down. I can produce this on a clean system without PaperCut installed so it does not seem to be a function of PaperCut or the way we interface with the queues.
When I first saw this I did some sniffing around with dtrace. I didn't managed to dig up much but you can clearly see activity:
I've posted a few dumps here:
    http://www.papercut.com/kb/Main/MacServerAdminIssue
My gut fee is that it's a regression. servermgrd is probably calling into CUPS to enumerate printer configuration, etc. and it's doing it horribly inefficient?
Might be a good "bug" to report to Apple? I'd be happy to pass around the word to a few larger mac sites and ask them to support it if that helps.
When I have a few moments (i.e. when users stop reporting bugs!), I'll add some tracing to CUPS and see if I can work out what's going on.

Thanks! Writing print management software is not the most exciting Apple project, but it is very rewarding when you get good feedback

  • Print Queue Management via Server Admin not working

We have Xserves (10.5.8) running the Print Service for queue management to our printers. Clients print through the server just fine.
When the printer jams or is otherwise paused, print jobs pile up in the queue as expected. The queue can be seen and managed by logging into the server, going to Server Preferences/Print & Fax and selecting the print queue.
However, when the queue for the paused printer is viewed within Server Admin/Print, the queue shows as empty and therefore can't be managed. We want to use Server Admin for this function because:
    1) Server Admin can be run remotely on a workstation, so no login to the server required.
    2) We can assign Print Service management rights to select non-admins so they can manage the queues.
Any ideas on why Server Admin fails to show spooled jobs? Is it working for anyone else?
I am using Server Admin version 10.5.3 which are the latest available that comes with Server Admin Tools 10.5.7. We had been running 10.5.7 on the Xserve and it didn't work then either.

Here's a bit more information about our setup and our experiences with Apple's CUPS implementation:
On the server, all printer queues are set up with only lpr and ipp sharing enabled with the PPD setting for each printer set to Generic Postscript. We found that setting the PPD to the printer specific one on the server caused problems when clients tried to use printer specific options, like paper tray selection, etc.. The selection would be undone, apparently because the driver on the server would override the previous settings. Using Generic Postscript allows the client PPD settings to go through unmodified. Our printers are general a mix of HP LaserJets and some Sharp Copiers.
All clients use lpd to the server queues with the printers' actual PPDs configured. Using ipp is superior in that printer feedback (jams, out of toner, etc) makes it back to the clients, but ipp only works when the client, the server, and the printer are on the same network. If the ipp client is not on the same network, the client spooler immediately goes into a paused state and the print job is stuck on the client.
Using lpd to the server queues works reliably, but there is no feedback to the client. Jobs disappear from the client queue and go to the server, appearing to the user as a successful print. If the printer is down, there's nothing they can see or do about it.

  • Web service has sent an empty response

    Hi,
Its a soap to soap scenario .I sent a request using altova xml spy and got an empty response.
There is no xi message in sxmb_moni .
The sender soap channel is running and shows no message in runtime workbench.
The receiver soap channel   status is  "channel started but inactive /uninitialised"
Can you tell me how to proceed?
    thanks a lot,
    Ramya

The soap request now goes to XI
    How?
Virtual Interface Method >mt_request::http://eu3cg/pi/security< not supported
Check if the message structures included in MI, Mapping etc are proper....the error says that the adapter is not able to parse the mt_request ....so there is some error in configuration.
If this doesnt help then explain the steps that you have implemented to create/ configure this scenario.
    Regards,

  • AFP quits repsonding, servermgrd crashed on Server 10.4.8

My system, XServe G4, running a clean install of Server 10.4 updated to 10.4.8 via Software Update, running file sharing and web services. Recently Users could not authenticate to the server, they saw a msg stating waiting for authentication and the spinning beach ball. I looked in the AFP logs and the the logins were clearly being recorded. I have our server set to disconnect all idle users after 60mn except admins and users w/open files. I tried to force disconnect every connected user and received an error msg from Server Admin about an afp plugin. Subsequently AFP service was shown as stopped and I could not get it to start again either from Server Admin or the terminal. I looked at the system.log and there I saw servermgrd had crashed:

  • Server Admin refuses to connect, servermgrd runs but no ports are open

Server Admin refuses to connect to server when run locally or remotely. Upon investigating, servermgrd seems to run but when I run network utilities and port scan the server, neither port 311 or 687 are open. All other services appear to be running fine. No firewall is running. Server Monitor also has the same problems but WorkGroup Manager seems to work fine.
About 3 weeks ago, I had the problem and after trying many things, I did a clean install but the problem has reappeared after a few days/weeks.
At some point, servermgrd was crashing with a message about NSURL.... (lost and forgot the exact message).
-Tried to remove all the files in /private/var/servermgrd/
This solved the crashes but it now runs without opening the ports. After starting, it doesn't run away and consume any CPU.
Could not locate in system.log, console.log and servermgr.log any error messages indicatind something is wrong with servermgrd.
The log does show that server names are coherent.
Apr 18 23:06:31 server-1 servermgrd: servermgr_dns: hostname and DNS entries for this server are synchronized
    - Tried rebooting.
    - Tried running servermgrd with various flags, including alternate port but nothing happen. In fact the alternate ports do noot seem to get open. Even passing faulty options, it runs without complaining !
    - Tried to reinstall the admin tools
    - Tried to remove keychain paswords entries
    - Tried Disk Utilities repair permissions.
Searching the posts, found somebody talkingabout servermgr_ctl
I'm starting to suspect some hardware failure (RAM).
Any suggestion how to test the ram.
    Running out of idea.
    Desperate for solution.
    Background
    OS X Server 10.4.9
Server Admin version Version 10.4.7 (157.8)
Xserve Dual G4 with 2 GB ram.   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ok, I ran memtest 4.2 and discovered the ram was failing, In replacing the dimm, they started working again so it may have been a mis-seated dimm module or some oxidation on the contact. My file system was already corrupt despite it being a fresh install. Then I checked and notice that the file com.apple.servermgrd.plist in Library preferences was gone. Either I stuppidly deleted it trying to fix the problem or it was hosed by the memory/file system corruption. Anyway, I copied it from another server and Both Server Admin and Server Monitor are now working.
    SOLVED.
PS: in view of this event, once I'm satisfied the memory issues is solved, I'll do again a clean install. Who know what else was corrupted.

  • Server Admin crashes and cannot save mail server changes

    Problems:
    1. In one account, Server Admin crashes on startup.
    2. As a workaround, I created another account where SA does start. However, in this account it disconnects from the server any time I want to save changes to the mail settings. Nothing gets saved.
    Questions:
    a. Can this have happened because I earlier deleted mail accounts in SA without going through curadm?
    b. If so, will deleting the accounts in curadm solve the problem?
    c. If not, what could have caused this sorry state of affairs?
    Thanks in advance.

I didn't mention before that after deleting the .plist file, the mail server would no longer accept incoming connections. Restoring the old .plist file and restarting the mail server didn' t help, so I went back to my backup. Then I had to restart the amavisd demon manually to get the mail queue started.
I hope that the rewritten ServerAdmin in 10.5 will be a bit more robust...

  • Problem in Server Admin: cpu and network graphs not updated or empty after lion server update

    Hi!
Just for archive purpouses because i've already solved that!
After upgrading from OSX Server 10.7 to 10.7.1 my CPU and Network graphs in Server Admin stop being updated.
In 24h the graphs where blank (disk usage graph seem to keep working).
First i read about "what is the application responsible for this"; it's called ServerPerfLog, and you can see if it's running that way:
         # ps ax | grep ServerPerf
If you don't see anything else than your own "grep", that means that no application is running, no data is being collected.
         41324 s000  R+     0:00.00 grep ServerPerf
A positive response for this (meaning that the service is running) should be something like that (2 lines: your grep and the service app itself):
         94   ??  Ss     0:04.71 /usr/libexec/ServerPerfLog
         41344 s000  R+     0:00.00 grep ServerPerf
Later i read about "where is the config file for this service app", and you can find it here:
         /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.ServerPerfLog.plist
If you edit this config file, check that the "Key > Disabled" is set to "False"
         # vi /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.ServerPerfLog.plist
            <key>Disabled</key>
            <false/>
After that, i try to launch the service that updates this graphs again, by hand, performing the following command:
         # sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.ServerPerfLog.plist
And the service got launch!!! yeeeepa!! i see a first update in graph data.
Also the "ps" query reply that the service was running!!
The bad things came a day after, when i saw that the graphs stop again....
I check if the service was running executing again the "ps" command, and that show me that the service was stopped again; no ServerPerfLog process was running.
But r e l a x, because the process hang because of a permissions problem.
You should know, I run "Repair permissions" within "Disk Utilities" over the running system disk, eeee... voila!
I hope that helps someone to get his fancy graphs back!
    Regards,
    t

You are God like!!! Wooo hooo! Thanks bud!

  • Server Admin Crashes on Launch

My SA now started crashing on launch.
The crash log shows access violation (EXCBADACCESS)
    in apple.ServerAdmin.IPFireWall
    Problem: I don't use Apple's firewall (didn't work).
I have tried to fix permissions and to delete the SA plist file to no avail.
I CAN launch SA if I first log in as another user, then start SA and log in
    as the admin to SA.
Any hint as to how to resolve this will be appreciated.
    Allan
    PS.:
When SA was not crashing, it had problems with disconnecting when trying
to write email list settings. I just noticed that this problem was reported
    back in 1994. It's now 1996.

    I'm having the same problem.
Try this: When the OS asks you to close or re-open the application, select re-open. It will crash again. Then select another dialog comes up and click Try Again. It will use new settings. You may now be able to work with the application. However, once you quit the application it will crash once you open Server Admin again.
That's the problem I have. I'm thinking of removing all the files Server Admin uses and re-install just Server Admin.

  • Server Admin hangs... error with servermgr_smb, says plug-in crashed

Whenever I run Server Admin and connect to the server, there is a very long delay before loading up the services and then stalls on Windows. An error window displays everytime. I am not running Windows sharing and this service should be turned off. I'm not sure where to go from here. Here is my system logs for this event:
Oct 12 22:05:35 web /usr/share/servermgrd/cgi-bin/servermgr_smb: [6900-a000b2a4] SIGALRM: process timed out

The error message that appears after Server Admin tries to load up is:
Try to refresh the view (209.147.120.141/Windows). Report the problem to the administrator if it persists. (“servermgr_smb” server-side plugin may have unexpectedly quit)
I have tried deleting the preferences file for Server Admin, I have tried replacing the servermgr_smb script in the cgi-bin folder, I have tried replacing the servermgr_smb bundle... I'm not sure where else to try and I haven't found much pertaining to this topic. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix? Any help is appreciated.

I looked at the logs again and am still getting these same error messages:
Oct 16 15:30:14 web /usr/share/servermgrd/cgi-bin/servermgr_smb: [16259-a000b2a4] SIGALRM: process timed out

I'm also finding these errors in my servermgrd_error.log files:
[Sun Oct 15 20:37:06 2006] [error] [client 66.243.213.30] script not found or unable to stat: /usr/share/servermgrd/cgi-bin/servermgr_p69

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to start looking?

  • Server admin needs com.apple.servermgrd.plist - which is not on my mac

Hi, I've installed server admin 10.5.7. It tries to connect to my server then says "there is no server available at the address you entered". Found a topic in the forums that says I need to run /System/Library/LaunchDaemons /com.apple.servermgrd.plist but it is not on my mac. Can someone please tell me where I can download it, or even post the contents (it's a gob of xml).
    Thanks much for any help.

Chances are that there is something wrong with DNS or something else on your network. plist files are files that are created when you run apps. Can you provide more info on how you set up the server - has it worked before, is this a new instal, have you verified that your server/network is working properly aside from this issue?

  • Server Admin (servermgrd) SSL

Greets, I have a need to control the ciphers used in the ssl communication on port 311 by servermgrd. The Apple 10.5 command line manual says "You can change servermgrd SSL encryption options by editing the com.apple.servermgrd.plist configuration file located in /Library/Preferences/. " but no guidance is provided for the plist file. Anyone have an idea on the syntax?

Okay, I took the files from my backup and anything works again
My question regarding how to access files became also answered: If someone is as stupid as I, all volumes can be accessed from /Volumes directory... my apology is that I have overseen it
Anyway, if you have made similar experiences with SSL and "Server Admin", maybe there is a way to prevent this strange behavior in the future ?
