Start once, run everywhere in a cluster

Hi,
what are easy ways to perform the following tasks:
          1) How can I ensure that some funcionality is only startet once in a
cluster. And to complicate it. When the functionality isn't running any
more, start it at another member in the cluster.
          2) The oposite: How can I ensure that some code is run on every memeber
          of a cluster.
          Thanks for suggestions.

Let me answer the easy one first:
          > 2) The oposite: How can I ensure that some code is run on every memeber
          > of a cluster.
Use a Servlet with load on startup and use the init method as if it were a
          "startup class".

A little trickier. Coordinating work across a cluster is possible with a
combo of JNDI and/or JMS but it's not easy / foolproof. Sounds like you need
a coherent cache to share state across the entire cluster ;-)

  • What about "write once, run everywhere" with web services ?

    Hi all,
I'm very new to web services in Java (but not new at all in Java and not really new in web services).
I'm amazed of not finding a specification API for web services. It doesn't seem that I can write a web service (or a web service client) and run it under several "web services containers" (like we can do for servlets, JDO and pretty all java technologies). It seems - according to the tutorials I found yet - that if I want to make a web service that runs under Apache Axis, I must use org.apache.axis.* classes, and so on with WebLogic and other web services container...
It doesn't look like java style and I'm kind of confused...
could someone give me details ? am I wrong or something ?
    TIA

I think is not that bad.
You have two APIs in the jwsdp tool just for web services (JAXRPC and JAXM) and you can construct your web services and your clientes wit that. Once you compile with the tool and you get the WSDL and the model I think that you can deploy it in any container (I think)

Is HTML3,4,5 in conformance to XML or XHTML ? Or X-HTML ? Why is ther HTML and then XHTML. I didn't see SGML consortium.
This fissure or crack which seems to have caused a bumpy road for Web Browser producers is really annoying.
It won't cause problems is really dumb.
XML has been around for a decade or so . . .
So if I write XHTML code. Will older browsers show it ?
I felt like there is HTML and then there is XHTML.
HTML requires a DTD tag at top which is really weird if you ask a layman what that is. Some standard from really old days.
THen there is HTML transition standard, a 2nd , a 3rd... If it's a standard and everyone could write HTML code and be a public publisher or FREE speech.
Then certain keywords are deprecated in one version, another version it's good to show. Makes no sense what is going on with browsers and their best attempts to get close to a W3C standard.
    Shame.
They have strict, frameset, and then transitional versions of HTML, DHTML, or XHTML, XDHTML. What's the need for four or five more Standards. Not a standard even a Protocol now.

  • Can jdbc be written once but run everywhere?

    hi everybody,
i am using jdbc. Since for different databases, their sql statements are not exactly the same. So my jdbc program which is written for an Oracle database cannot run for a MySQL database. For example, in Oracle, i created a silly table like this:
    CREATE TABLE hello (
    id integer,
    primary key (id) );
but in MySQL, in order to create the same table, i have to modify my sql statement like this:
    CREATE TABLE hello (
    id integer primary key );
So , if i create such a table in my jdbc program, i have to modify my codes so as to migrate my jdbc program from Oracle to MySQL. For a java programmer who wants his programs to be written once but run everywhere, this is not a beautiful thing.
I dont know if SUN has provided some technologies to avoid this dependence. Perhaps SUN has defined a unified sql for java(jsql?) and make the translation from jsql into special sql of different databases a task of jdbc drivers?

    Hi,
This is a simple one compared to the lazy way that MS decided to implement Access database and the sql code. The wildacard * does not work from java programs where you have to use the %.
Fortunately, maybe, standards are improving, but be aware that you may have to know silly discrepancies until there is proper standardisation.
This includes the different spellings between English and American too.

  • HT1751 i bought a new, larger external hard drive. copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive. iTunes will not start or run unless old hard drive plugged in.??

I bought a new, larger external hard drive. I have my iTunes library on the external drive instead of C: drive, Using Windows 7.
I copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive.
iTunes will not start or run unless the old hard drive is plugged in.
If I disconnect the old drive iTunes shuts down.
    Any ideas. ??

    Hello kskip,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive.  You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.
You can find the full article here:

  • Maverick starting to run slow

    I've got a iMac with 8gb installed, a core 3.1GHz i7 processor.
There are 2 areas where the system is running ridiculously slow, when I start any app. The computer doesn't respond at all for 30 seconds+.
I've just timed the startup of Lexar's Image Rescue 4 program. From clicking it's icon in the dock it took 50 seconds before the icon started bouncing, 56 seconds for the app's flash window to appear and 1 minute for the main window to appear.
The other speed issue I have is open and save dialogs. Click Documents, for example, the gear wheel spins for nearly a minute before the folder's contents is displayed.
Once the programs have started they run fine, no problem. Once Documents contents have been displayed everything runs smoothly (unless you click to a lower level folder in which case that will be slow).
I can't guarantee it, but I think this all started with the last system upgrade, to 10.9.1 which I installed on 17 December.
    Anyone else getting this problem?
    Jack

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be pertinent.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: You copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, proceed anyway.
Below are instructions to enter a UNIX shell command. It does nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The command will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but it's really a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user, and the affected user is not an administrator, then please run the command twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The administrator is the user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time. If you can't log in as an administrator, just run the command as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    clear; PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(grep [^[:blank:]] "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; a=$(id | grep -w '80(admin)'); [[ "$a" ]] && sudo true && r=1 || r=; { [[ "$a" ]] || echo $'No admin access\n'; [[ "$a" && !     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. The line you pasted will disappear.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter your password, the command will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear.
You can then quit Terminal. The output of the command will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V again.
    Please note:
☞ This procedure is all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted. When typing it, you won't see what you're typing. Make sure caps lock is off.
☞ Remember to post the output. It's already in the Clipboard when you see "[Process completed]" in the Terminal window.
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

  • Recommended way to start db on oracle10g asm in cluster

We have a oracle 10g asm instance running on Solaris 10 cluster. During maintenance activity, we shutdown the database using cluster but startup of the database is carried out by DBA & not thru cluster. We then start the cluster service of the database after the manual startup. Is this fine & we can continue this practise or the recommended way is to start db thru cluster?

you can enable the database to startup automatically and test it by adding the asm database in the Oracle Clusterware.

  • ITunes just started to run very slowly on windows XP

As of today, iTunes has started to run very slowly, on starting, on selecting a song, on any kind of moving around the interface. I can select a new song, it will play, but it takes about 10 seconds for the rest of the graphics to catch up (i.e. for song info to change, or the speaker icon to move to the next song etc). I cannot control what my virus software is doing (corporate computer locked down) but I can tell you it's been fine until today Wednesday 16 August. Running XP, on a Core Duo new Dell Latitude.
It also takes ages to load now. I tried removing the library, re-installing, updating etc. No avail.
I note that today I just had a big Windows update done.
Dell latitude 620   Windows XP Pro   Core Duo

Any recent changes to your anti-virus/firewall, anti-spyware, anti-adware or other protection software? (Updates, new versions, etc.)
It sounds like some sort of scanning is going on before these things open.
I started having overall slower computer problems when I downloaded and installed the instant search feature that's part of Office 2007. Once I uninstalled this add-on things started moving along a little faster.
But, if you have a large iTunes library it does take a while to load and open the program--especially if it's not part of your startup routine. The iTunes store page loads are a bit more of a mystery--unless you have a firewall scanning issue causing some interference.

  • When I download itunes, it says that Ipod Service failed to start. I checked the services under task manager and when I try to start it, it says access denied. How to I get access and for the ipod service to start and run?

Please help. My ipod classic could not be recognised by itunes when I connect my ipod to PC. Previously it has been recognised before I updated. This was a while ago now and so I removed all apple files and re installed the latest itunes but am having the same problem.
When I download itunes, it says that Ipod Service failed to start. I checked the services under task manager and when I try to start it, it says access denied. How to I get access and for the ipod service to start and run?

Some anti-virus programs (e.g., McAfee) have this rule that can be invoked under the "maximum protection" settings: PREVENT PROGRAMS REGISTERING AS A SERVICE. If that rule is set to BLOCK, then any attempt to install or upgrade iTunes will fail with an "iPod service failed to start" message.
If you are getting this problem with iTunes, check to see if your anti-virus has this setting and unset it, at least for as long as the iTunes install requires. Exactly how to find the rule and turn it on and off will vary, depending upon your anti-malware software. However, if your anti-virus or anti-malware software produces a log of its activities, examining the log may help you find the problem.
For example, here's the log entry for McAfee:
9/23/2009 3:18:45 PM Blocked by Access Protection rule NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe \REGISTRY\MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\iPod Service Common Maximum Protection:Prevent programs registering as a service Action blocked : Create
Note that the log says "Common Maximum Protection: Prevent programs registering as a service". The "Common Maximum Protection" is the location of the rule, "Prevent programs registering as a service" is the rule. I used that information to track down the location in the McAfee VirusScan Console where I could turn the rule off.
After I made the change, iTunes installed without complaint.

We solved this by increasing the number of open files, by adding the following in the /etc/security/limits.conf
    * soft nofile 50000
    * hard nofile 50000

  • Macbook Pro starting to run slow

Hi everyone, I have a macbook pro that is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with a 2.4 GHx internal core 2 duo and 4 GB of memory. I have had it for 2 years and its starting to run slowly. When it first boots up it seems to take forever and also when it shuts down. Also the programs are running more slowly. I bought an external hard drive and moved the bulk of my stuff onto it hoping that that would help, but it didn't. I have 186.57 GB available on my computer. I have a virus protection software and have ran it to see if maybe it has a virus but it doesn't find anything. Is this normal for it to start running slowly? Any tips on what I can do? I have considered updating to Lion but I have heard that it doesn't run very well on macbook pro and am also concerned that even if I buy it the harddrive will still run slowly.
    Thanks!
