UPA to PCI brige performance
I'm writing a device driver for a custom PCI device and need
200+ MBytes/Sec through the PCI bus. I am using an Ultra450 with
one of its 64 bit/66Mhz busses (528Mbytes/sec). Problem is that the
bridge chip disconnects when each 64 byte boundary is crossed by my
DMA controller. The overhead incurred to restart the transfer (all hardware) burns about 80% of the bus time. This disconnect behavior is documented in the U2P user's manual. I have run the bridge in each of
its three modes with basically the same result(CONSISTENT DVMA,
STREAMING DVMA, and MMU bypassed)
1. Is there any way around the disconnect behavior?
2. A good part(half) of the overhead happens after my DMA controller
addresses the bridge (DEVSEL active) but before it is ready to
transfer (TRDY active) even on STREAMING DMA reads from the bridge.
Is there any way to make the bridge ready faster?
3. Are there any existing PCI devices out there on any Sun platform
capable of soundly beating 100 MBytes/sec?
Hello Robert,
Thanks for your explanations. I also understood the purpose of the PCI-to-PCI bridge.
I have actually two PXI 1045 chassis used in two similar configurations.
I initially did not see the resource problem when using my first rack equiped with 6 PXI cards (1 MXI link and 5 DAQ cards), since everything looked fine within MAX and I had access to all I/O channels under LabView.
It is when I setup the second chassis fitted with 10 cards that I discovered that cards 7 to 10 had a resource lack. This rack is linked to an identical HP PC as the first configuration.
There was also a resource lack for the NI trigger routing module and one PCI-to-PCI bridge.
The first configuration had the first resource issue conerning trigger module and PCI-to-PCI bridge.
We tried to use the chassis with another old Dell computer running Win2K, and it worked fine. So it is probably not a rack fault.
I guess MXI-4 needs a driver, since it adds these bridges that need I/O memory resources.
We use the last Bios for the HP workstation. I really do not understand why the cards have this resource problem, and how to investigate further.

I'm considering purchasing my first Mac. I've been a *NIX user since 2006 with the exception of the many hours I enjoy installing updates for an OS I don't use and renewing anti-virus subscriptions all so I can use a mobile phone.
What has me sold is the performance of the PCIE drives, and I would potentially find the default OS tolerable. The problem I am concerned with is the really BAD, deceptive marketing regarding the read/write speed of the 128 size. I refer to the 312.9MB / s write of the 128GB SanDisk found in the 13" vs the 676.7MB / s write of the 256GB Samsung found in the 15". I would return the purchase if I ended up with the lower speed so would like to avoid that hassle for all parties.
What is the story on this with the current model? Same goes for Macbook Air, haven't decided between the two but I hate to take a performance hit when replacing a very old laptop. Money is an issue, I'm limited to the 13" versions, and the 128 drive - unless I go with the Air. Again, same PCIE SSD or flash in these two devices? Didn't get an employee to acknowledge there was a difference after dragging myself to the Apple store. My local store did have the 256GB apple ssd sm0256f in the 13" model, only wish there were a way to confirm all came that way. It will be worth the paying of sales tax for that. It is out of my price range, but when looking at benchmarks of that particular dirve... wow.

What is the PCI bus performance of the 1422?
I'm currently using an IMAQ PCI-1422 to acquire images from a camera. The image size is 1280x1024 @ 8-bits a pixel. Currently the camera can only run freely at 20 fps. So this data rate is roughly 26 MB/s. The IMAQ card seems to be able to acquire these images at that rate. However, I need to be able to retrieve these images into system memory at the same rate. At this time, I've only managed to retrieve the images at around 12 fps which is about 16 MB/s. Is this all I can reasonably expect from this card? There is no other activity along the PCI bus except for perhaps minor updates to the video display.
I'm acquiring images using a Grab. I use a callback on the Buffer Done signal to trigger an acquisit
ion running in another thread. Actually, I'd prefer to the acquisition in the callback itself, but I am uncertain as to how the callback is implemented and what I can and can't do in a callback. Is there documentation somewhere that I'm missing?
Oh yeah. I'm using MSVC++ and Windows 98.
ThanksI tried the example and removed the clipping the ROI to the size of the canvas and also took out the image plot to make sure we would get accurate times. I get the same frame rate with that example as I did with my own code (around 12 fps). Also, I neglected to mention that for my own code I placed calls to timers just before and just after the call to imgGrab, and the time difference is what you would expect: about .083 seconds (average) to retrieve one frame.
I know nothing about the internal structure of the PCI-1422, but considering that we are retrieving images from the same SDRAM memory that is being used to acquire images, are we seeing some sort of bus contention on the PCI-1422 itself? Also, the camera I'm using is an evaluation board, and I have access
to the schematics and should soon have access to the CPLD design. So I can verify the design of the camera itself. I'm glad to hear that you expect to be able to transfer at 45MB/sec. That probably means that there is something not quite right either in the camera interface or perhaps in the computer system being used. But if you have any other ideas, I'd be glad to hear them.
Thanks for the response. -
PowerMac G3 B&W and Radeon 7000 PCI Low Performance :(
Hello guys. Lats week I bought Radeon 7000 PCI Mac Edition for my B&W. In my B&W I've got G4 XLR8 400@500MHz, 320MB RAM in Micron modules, Radeon 7000 PCI ME, USB 2.0 card on NEC chipset, ATTO SCSI PSC card witch system disk connected to it. When I put this Radeon to B&W I was not impressed at all. I installed all drivers for OS9 and 10.3.9 I also installed 10.4.8 for some tests. First I try visualizations in OS9 in iTunes 2.0.4 and I've got only 19fps in Panther with iTunes 7.0.2 effect are similar about 14-23fps. The best things happened in Tiger frame drops in DVD Player was noticed by me and iTunes visualizations are also very slow. On my old Beige G3 266MHz and older Ati Radeon PCI ME I've got about 40fps in iTunes 2 in OS9. I don't understand this situation my old machine with I sold almost two years ago was faster then my B&W G4 with Radeon 7000 ME witch I'm using now. I also tested this card in my PowerMac G4 AGP and in OS9 results was the same.
Do you have some idea how to resolve this or maybe I've made a mistake somewhere or maybe this is normal thing for this card ?
One more thing I installed the the ATI Radeon 7000 card after I had installed the system on B&W and G4 AGP.
B&W G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)"On my old Beige G3 266MHz and older Ati Radeon PCI ME I've got about 40fps in iTunes 2 in OS9."
If your Beige had an original Radeon Mac Edition, that is a more powerful card than the Radeon 7000. -
I have a MSI K8N NERO4 PLATIMIUM board, and in the bios there is a menu called:PnP/pci configrations, and in there, there is a menu called maximum payload size, where i can seclect some numberes 128,256,512,1024,2018,4096,what does that means and what is the best settings,i have a asus Nividia geforce 600gt 256md display card
Hello !!
This has something to to with the PCI-E Buswidth, higher numbers increase PCI-E Performance but can make the system unstable.
If your system works fast and stable let this item alone.

ESATA 6g, USB 3 on PCI, real world
I am looking to buy a
CalDigit FASTA-6GU3
2 Port USB 3.0 & eSATA 6Gb/s Host Adapter
to put in my 2008 Mac Pro PCI slot to run an external Blu-Ray writer and hard drive enclosure off the eSATA ports.
Looking for info on what real-world Gps/Mbps the Mac Pro PCI slot can actually handle -- it is great if the card is 6Gbps eSATA & 5Gbps USB3.0 -- but the bottleneck is what the PCI bus can move (also limited by what the hadrdrive and writer can actually read/write).
I read on the reviews that the Mac Pro PCI bus can only perform tops 500Mbps (slightly above Firewire 400Mbps).
I also read the actual PCI card performance was limited to 250MBps due to its PLX chip design.
As USB2.0 is based on 480Mbps -- I have to wonder what all these numbers mean.
Can anyone put this into layman's perspective -- why put a 6Gps eSATA and USB 3.0 card in a PCI slot that is limited to 250Mbps?Bytes will come to byte you if you think they are bits.
Kilobytes was the same issue. Or gigabits and bytes.
10 bits to a byte basically. sometimes 8 bits if there is no check bit.
Wikipedia is your friend, more so than Google. And there are dictionaries online of tech terms.
Some poeple come here talking about their MacPro except that they don't know what a 65lbs Mac is and my guess is there are a dozen notebook users asking.
The Sonnet E4P ~$250 w/ 4 x eSATA ports is nice for adding direct connect to SATA devices, more than enough bandwidth.
Your Mac has those four internal SATA2 drive bays. Those are all on a single shared controller bus, so while in theory you can get 275MB/sec max from each, there also is NOT full 1GB let alone 1.2 (1200MB/sec) but rather 750MB/sec - more than enough for most disk drives still. Only when you got to SSDs that it was more apparent.
Here is what your Mac's Serial ATA drives and bus are offering in bandwidth performance, sortof.
180MB/sec is about the max of 4TB enterprise drive, or WD 10K latest VelocityRaptors.
SATA2 SSD was about 275MB/sec also, and 450-500/550 (max, writes are often less with SSDs, reads tend to do very well, but it is the very high I/O's per second that they shine, along with lowest response time in seeks being 1/1000th - instead of being 4-12 milliseconds you are into less than 1.0 nanoseconds.
Geeks were happy with a Base2 numbering - binary 1's and 0's and base16 whereas Apple and others now wanted to change one gigabyte from being binary 1024MB and turn it into 1000MBs. The dumbing down of math, specs, and the i-ification of consumer devices. iDevice, iOS and consumers that never liked those 1024 binary and hex based numbering system. -
PCI-to-PCI bridge confilct under Win2000
I tried to install the PXI-1000B chassis under Win2000 through MXI-3 interface without success. From the device manager I found that there is a yellow question mark on a standard PCI-to-PCI bridge. It reports that there is a conflict in IO-port range assignment which was pre-occupied with the other device. But I can not find the device. There is not any other device which uses the same IO-port area. And from the advice of knowledge base, I have edited the registry of my video adaptor(NVidia,AGP), but failed to detect the PXI-cards. The MXI-3 optimization works well(It does not report any error and whenever I run it, the LED of the chassis blinks.). But the devices in the chassis do not show in MAX and device manager. I can find
two more PCI-to-PCI bridge from the device manager. One is occupied by the AGP video adaptor(PCI bus 1). The other is on the PCI bus 2. A new PCI-bridge was shown after I inserted MXI-3 card, which was linked to the PCI-brige on bus 2 as subsidary, which reports the conflict. How can I solve this problem? The attachment is MXI3.log after running the optimization software.

Flash videos suffering from intermittent "micro-freezes" in animation
Hello, I have been having issues lately with the latest version 12.0070 flash plugin causing flash based videos to have what I call "mirco freezes" or mircostutter, where a frame in the video freezes for a like a few milliseconds every so often. I ran DTC latency checker and got in the low 100's of microseconds of latency which is normal, even with no video playback. CPU usage is at 10% or less during video playback. I have done complete uninstall of flash, including the registery entry removal and folder removal, but even with fresh install, whether it be ActiveX version for IE or the plugin version for other browsers, still has the microstutter issues during video playback. I also upated all drivers and disabled hardware acceleration. For a final test, I disabled startup items with Msconfig, but I still get the microstutters in flash videos................So here is all I know to do is post my PC info and process monitor log file in the hopes that some bright computer programmer on here can see what is going on.......

How well does a new Mac Pro work with Adobe Premiere CC 2014
I'm trying to spec out a new Mac Pro so I can edit 4K footage from a RED camera. I currently edit using Premiere CC 2014. I've heard all kinds of bad stories with the new Mac and Premiere and was wondering if anyone has had a good experience. These are the specs I'm looking at for the mac. Thanks in advance.
Those AMD Dxxx and drivers as well as it may take a product cycle for Adobe if they are interested in the 6,1 customer base.
Dual AMD PCIe 7xxx and above even in dual setups, or of course you can throw one or two nVidia GTX 7xx into those silver "oMP" 2009-2012s (the 2008 just lacks good decent PCIe GPU performance with good graphic cards).
Also the way the nMP will 'share' and throttle to limit itself to 450W and its thermal design so that both GPUs and the processor are not both given full reign (they do when running Windows 8.1 natively - 8.1 because that is the "oldest" version supported with drivers and booting via Apple). -
Despite my server running fine on a fresh Solaris U1 install, I get a ton of warning messages during bootup that I thought the developers would like to know about.
Here is the relevant info from my messages file:

It then repeats all the way to ID 128 and then does the same for SYMHISL1.
PS - Thanks for amazing product. Love my new Solaris webserver. No, haven't found a solution yet only because it isn't a priority as my Solaris server fully functions perfectly so far.
I don't think it is related to the NIC though as you suggest. You might just not have a supported NIC hence why you even see it? -
Is DisplayPort an input as well as output on macbook pro?
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 17" and i know that it has Thunderbolt/DisplayPort. i know the cinema displays use displayport input and the macbook can provide the output signal for an external monitor, however i want to do just the opposite and use my macbook pro screen as a display for my xbox360. I was looking at the Atlona DP300 which converts and scales a 1080p HDMI signal to a 1920x1200 resolution output in the form of display port, however im trying to find out if my macbook pro could accept this signal. the maximum resolution of my screen is 1920x1200. if this is possible, what software would need to be used since i know the input would have to actually be through the operating system as the screen will not operate independently.
thanks a bunchHi a,
That's an interesting question. On the Thunderbolt page (http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/) it says "Which means you can connect external devices like . . . video capture solutions directly to MacBook Pro or iMac — and get PCI Express performance," and lists "Video Capture: Blackmagic UltraStudio 3D, Matrox MX02." Note that BUS 3D is "only $995," and the MX02 only twice that much!
So, it sounds like the potential is there, but I think you've asked the operative question: "what software would need to be used?" And I suspect that at this point in time, although the hardware potential is there, the software to control exactly what you want to do, with the hardware you want to use, is not.
Somebody's always got to be the first one to try something, so maybe s/he already has and will post here. If not, and you give it a try, I hope we'll hear from you. Good luck to you. -
Problem of Initialization of MXI-3 card
Hello,
I try to initialize my PXI-1002 chassis, with a PCI-MXI-3 in my computer. But it doesn't work.
My configuration :
-PXI-1002 Chassis
-NI PXI MXI-3 8330 and NI PCI MXI-3 8330
-Win 2000 Pro
-Dell GX260
-MXI-3 Soft ver 1.1 (I also tried with the ver 1.15)
-PXI Chassis Initialization 1.0
-NI MAX 3.01
My procedure of installation :
-1 Installation of NI MAX
-2 Installation of MXI-3 Soft ver 1.1 (and reset of computer)
-3 Installation of NI PCI MXI-3 8330 linked to NI PXI MXI-3 8330 in the PXI-1002 Chassis
-4 Turn on PXI Chassis
-5 Turn on Computer
-6 Dialog Box :" A MXI 3 was not detected in your system. Please verify power and link status..."
The LED (Power and Link) of PXI and PCI 8330 MXI 3 are good (green state).
MAX don't "see" any PXI chassis.
My computer don't "see" the PCI 8330 MXI 3 card. That's why I can't communicate with the chassis.
If you have any idea...
PS : I don't have another chassis or card to test my current hardware.Hello Breizh,
Apparently you did the installation correcty.
One question, wich resources do you have in your PXI chassis (DAQ board,...).
Is your version of Windows 2000 OS is out of date, if not, please update your system. I will recommend service pack 4.
Most of the time PCI-PCI brige problems are due to BIOS system.
Could you check on the DELL website if your BIOS is up to date. If not download the latest version of the BIOS.
Please let me know if theses recommandations helps you solve your problem or not.

Ti4200 128mb instability... ???
i've read in one of the reviews of ti4200 128mb that ti4200 series cards are unstable... is this true based on the experience of those users who use the card???
** i've been using the card for less than a month but i don't see any sign of instability still... how bout other users???What review?
I never had any unstability with any GF4 on my system.
I have seen it quite often on others and systems I had to bang my head and spent countless hours trying to get things working properly. And it's all GF4 cards by several maunufacturers, I could even say it goes back farther than GF2's...what about ATI?
I have a workstation that had NT4 and an Nvidia Riva TNT 2, it had more problems than anything I have ever used, it was simply a defective card as I noticed my other workstation identical in every aspect, never had a problem.
Usually it's on a system that someone upgraded from an earlier version of MS/OS and didn't do a clean install or just simply don't have any experience with computers. A system that was just built and thrown together without any consideration as to how to populate PCI slots, perform due diligence on hardware compatability.
Of course there is the VIA issue, and the Powersupply issue, and the many correct and incorrect ways to load OS and system drivers. What about the n00b? ...ohh I kinda said that didn't I... 8o
I am in no way trying to say it's all from inexperienced users as it happens to everyone at some point and if it hasn't yet, you'd better pack a lunch just in case! Make sure it's non perishables
Thank the stars we have forums and news sites!
"NeverEndingStory"
So that's my take, I don't think it's just the 4200 series.
It is one of the better overclockers and a decent bang for the buck in my opinion.
Sorry, I was bored -
P67A-GD65: failed BIOS update, no more post
Hi,
I had updated my P67A-GD65 (B3) to the new 4.3 BIOS, after using a much older one, based on the description for improved PCI-E performance. The experience was a nightmare though, and not only could I no longer overclock in the BIOS (nor the Control Center software), but my video card, a Radeon 7870, became highly unstable. I had backed up my BIOS before this, and proceeded to downgrade to it from the BIOS utility. It gave me a warning that the BIOS file was not for my motherboard, which i understandably ignored, since that was what it had been running before. Lo and behold, the machine will no longer post at all and I have just about thrown in the towel.
I did some searches here and cleared the CMOS via the jumper, and tried the recovery tips I saw regarding booting with the CTRL-Home keys pressed, but no sign of life at all. I live in Brazil, so sending this for tech support will mean some weeks and shipping abroad. Before I do that, does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

I Think MSI must advise all users that some procedure of flashing are dangerous, like "in Bios" and "in Windows".
MSI should simply remove from official site these flashing possibilities.
Perhaps I exaggerate, but it is not normal that the flashing procedure fails with official tools.
I think the fact their new BIOS is so problematic is a much worse issue than this failed flash problem that killed my computer. I did not mention that after all those problems I described with 4.3, I actually downgraded to 4.2 to see the exact same problem. It was at that point that I chose to move back to the older BIOS family which led to the present standstill. -
GD45-8D - Question before bios flash
Hey,
Got a problem where my computer is more slow than it is supposed to be in heavy instances (3D applications) so need to try updating my bios.
I know how but i currently have 7760vA7 Bios installed but latest is 7760vC2 and says in the BIOS update SOP-documentation "Updating System BIOS version with Intel ME 7 to BIOS version with Intel ME 8"..
First it is C instead of A in the update name, does it matter? However the real question would be, is my board compatible with this update? (also regarding intel ME.. not sure if i have it or not and if that might be a problem too)
Better be safe than sorry and ask first.

GTX680 4gbBeen like this since i built the computer about six months ago but it is only something i noticed when using 3D application software or alternatively games i suppose too (havn't tested it too much with games though).
Same result with ATI HD7970 card so don't think it's the graphic card itself but perhaps the new bios (if compatible) could maybe work due to the pci-e performance fix but could be something else too i suppose.
The reason i know it is more slow than it is supposed to be is i have tried scenes on more or less the same sort of a computer (same kind of i7, 32gb ram, same type of graphic card GTX680 but completely different motherboard though)
