Verizon is Capping Internet Speed/Service for "Unlimited" Customers

Some recent news has been brought to my attention by Verizon Wireless' customer service department, and I think that given the severity of Verizon Wireless’ continued breach of contract to Internet customers, this matter should be brought to everyone else's attention as well.
I originally purchased a Verizon Wireless USB Internet Card in 2007. I was offered a plan that entitled me to an “Unlimited Internet Usage Allowance”. I kept the same wireless Internet device for two years and never acquired any issues or concerns. On January 20th, 2010, I went into a Verizon store and was offered a free upgrade to the new MiFi Mobile HotSpot. I was told that I could test the product for 30 days to make sure that it worked to my standards and my Internet needs. It worked perfectly. I used it for multiple computers in my home, as well as work and travel.
My problem with the Verizon MiFi began on October 21st, 2010 when my Internet suddenly became extremely slow and unable to access any web pages without minutes of waiting. I continued to call customer service and go into the Verizon stores throughout the month in hopes that someone could find a ‘glitch’ and solve my issue of what soon became No Internet access. I did all this with patience and good faith, as I have continued to pay $60 a month for “High speed 3G” service. Two weeks ago, I took the MiFi device into the store and requested a new device since it became entirely defective. My new device arrived in the mail and I have still spent the last week going through the ring-around circus of Tech support and the only logic they can come up with is, "Either the device is defective or my computer is too old."  This is not the case, as I recently purchased a new laptop.
What I discovered was that Verizon neglected to inform me for the past two months that I had gone over my "undisclosed usage threshold" (Even though I pay for Unlimited Allowance) and now my internet speed has been capped and I am unable to access the Internet. I spent 4 hours on the phone yesterday and weaved my way into a small department called "AIT" which is supposedly a new sub-contracted company that is suppose to help negotiate my "situation". They of course are closed, and my numerous voice mails will most likely never be returned.
At this point, I am still paying for something that does not work, and Verizon has taken it upon themselves to decide "how often" I can use the internet. This was not disclosed to me in my contract that I signed in Jan 2010, when I continued my Wireless plan for "unlimited usage allowance."
I want everyone to be aware of this, before they head out this holiday season and spend hundreds of dollars on a Verizon Wireless Internet Device, and eventually will have to deal with the same nonsense I'm currently going through right now!

I started with one of the few unlimited plans back in 2008- They kept telling me to "hang on to it- cause it won't be around for long!" So I did and when I upgraded my device- everything worked great for 7 months. I started using it more frequently as a hot spot for more than one computer, we're talking email, web browsing and paying bills- Not Xbox360 for 24 hours a day or fownloading 10 videos a day!? I don't even know how to do that!?!
And the first month we went over- we got capped! Now it runs at about a quarter of the speed. Which was never disclosed to me. And to think- they market this MiFi 2200 as a hotspot for up to 5 computers??? I can only imagine how quickly people are being capped.

    Hi Brain,
what's version of SQL Server that you have installed and what's your operationg system version info?
If you are running SQL Server 2008, which is not supported on the Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 domain controll (DC), even on Windows Server 2003 DC, there are limitations. Microsoft does not recommend to install SQL Server instances and DC on the same server,
for more information, see Install SQL Server on a Domain Controller (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx#DC_Support).
There are some threads in the forum talked about installing SQL Server and DC on the same server, here are some for your references:

  • Verizon Fios business internet speeds. Higher then 150/35?

Does anybody know if Verizon offers anything higher then 150/35 business internet speeds? I called them on the phone and all I got from them is "Oh I don't know if there is anything higher you'll have to call this number" and It will not let me call that number if I don't have an account number. So does anybody on here know if they have anything higher then 150/35 for a fios line. I mean I would think they would its fiber?

No at the moment this is the highest bandwith they offer, not available in all areas even where fios is,it has to be ordered as a stand alone,no bundles offered, would require you to upgrade your ONT,and router.if you already have Fios.
You can now add it to bundles in those area that have it.

  • Detecting internet speed etc for video output

    Hi everyone!
We are putting some flash video on our intranet and would
like to figure out how to use action script to detect internet
speed and prob screen res to feed back video(s) compressed &
resized accordingly. Is that the right approach? I'm sure there are
some rules, regulations & industry standards out there to
follow... Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
Thank you so much in advance!
    Olga

download speed you can calculate by loading something into
your swf and using the getBytesLoaded() method and getTimer()
    function.
screen resolution you can access by using
    System.capabilities.screenResolutionX and
    System.capabilities.screenResolutionY.

  • Why doesn't Verizon offer any Contacts backup solution for prepaid customers?

So I used to be on a contract plan, had my branch office close down, went out of work, and ended up having my contract lapse (this was a couple years ago). After all the monthly service charges for two lines mounted up before Verizon actually shut off the service, combined with early disconnect penalties and the like, the final bill was like $1100.
I wasn't about to pay this, so I ended up switching to a prepaid plan. I understand that prepaid services naturally will carry certain limitations and restrictions of service as compared to contract plans, but one of the most absurd and ridiculous limitations is having no way to backup contacts, whether in general, or when switching devices (particularly from Android to Apple, or vise versa).
As soon as I switched to prepaid, the Backup Assistant feature designed exclusively to backup contacts stopped working. To add, the Verizon Cloud service is not available for prepaid customers. You would think as small as a vcf namecard file is to backup, that either 1) Verizon Cloud should be accessible to prepaid customers, maybe not to the extent of backing up photos, etc., but at least to backup contacts, or 2) enable the original Backup Assistant feature for prepaid customers to backup contacts.
I'm now switching from an Android device to an Apple device, and Verizon is offering me no solutions to backup my contacts, other than a customer service rep telling me I could try taking both devices in to a store to see what they could do, but promised nothing in regards to them actually being able to do it. Android to android is simple, as you can export your contacts to an external SD card, and then import them back in via the external SD. But when switching to apple device, you can't do that. There's also no indication I could import contacts from Gmail to an apple device.
Even after getting gouged with an $1100 collection debt from Verizon due to an unfortunate loss of job, I stayed loyal to them, continue to reach in to my pocket and send them money every month for the last 2 years on prepaid, yet I can't even backup my contacts? It's completely absurd.

if you have an iPhone you'd just do it through iCloud( I ssume ) and if you have Android you'd just do it through your Google account

  • Do you get 3g internet speed/service on an 8330?

I bought an 8330 on ebay that was hardly used...I like the phone a lot but the internet browser seemed slow and not very advanced and I noticed it doesn't display 3g on the screen.  I was eligible to upgrade and got the Bold 9650 and it displays 3g but I really don't notice the internet being any faster on it...so does the 8330 get 3g even though it doesn't display?
The 9650 is ok but not impressive.  I do like the theaded text feature in the 5.0 OS and the trackpad is easier to use, but the phone is heavier and the USB port is in an odd place on the lower right side.  It is much more convienent on the upper left side on the 8330 for use when charging at the same time.  I know the 9650 has a faster processor and 512mb and a 2gb sd card, but still i'm thinking my 8330 was just as good for what I need...

The 8330 is 3G capable. On devices previous to the 9650, 8530 and 9550 the symbol for 3G is different. It's displayed as EV. So when you see 1XEV that means you're getting full 2G and 3G service.
The speed of web browsing between the two devices is expected to be similar. However, on the Bold 9650 you now have WiFi - so if you connect via WiFi you should notice a little jump in your speeds.

  • Verizon Fios and internet connection issue for ONLY some of my devices

Lost my internet connection last night for about half of my devices (iMac, iPad, Kindle) but the funny thing is that the other devices are able to connect to the internet at the same time.
The Verizon Fios router is MI424WR with dual antennae.  I have a Time Capsule hooked up via ethernet to the Verizon router and am using the TC as a wireless access point.
As I am not computer knowledgable, could this happen if there was a firmware update on the Fios router?  Could the Fios router allow only certain devices access while denying access to other devices to the internet?  It seems that if only one device can access the internet, the system does work but there is a "gatekeeper" that is not allowing access.

No, you use the airport utility not Network Preferences which is your local computer setup.
Setup of the TC you need to select it in the airport utility.. on either a Mac or in a phone or ipad.
When you open it click on the TC and go to the edit tab and check all the details. eg the bridge is here.
Go to the wireless tab to setup wireless.
I recommend a change of wireless name if you do not use names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. do so.
See how you go without a factory reset but if that doesn't work then a reset is in order.

  • Extending network halves internet speed only for iPhone/iPad

I've got an Airport Extreme (model just before dual-band) and an Airport Express, both with 802.11n support. I'm using 802.11n (b/g compatible). When I set the two up to extend my wireless network either through WDS or the "Extend a Wireless Network" feature, my internet connection speed (as measured by Speedtest.net) drops by approximately half, but only on my iPhone 4 and iPad.
I'm aware that extending a network can affect total throughput, but in my case I have 6Mbit DSL so from my OSX machines I see a measured speed of 5Mbit, well below the max throughput of the network. However, running the rest from my iPhone or iPad right afterwords results in a speed of only ~2.6Mbit.
Changing the Airport Express to "Join a Wireless Network", instead of extending it, immediately restored the iPhone and iPad to the connection speed of the OSX machines (again, as measured with Speedtest.net).
Has anyone else seen this behavior, or even better, have you found a solution?

I now realize that there are some settings to limit content on your iPhone and iPad through "Settings", "General", "Restrictions".  I've turned them on and will test it out.

  • Palm Pre Plus: why have it Verizon if it`s no good for your customers?

I have a Verizon Palm Pre Phone and it is the absolute worst phone I ever owned and I have owned mobile phones back when you needed a operator to place the call., I have had this for for 3 months with 3 warranty replacements in 3 weeks the first two phones would not build a palm profile account phone 3 and 4 the verizon system does not recognize the  phone`.the s ESN I have spoke with both Palm and Verizon`s techs for hours with no help I have been blind transferred back and forth hung-up on by a verizon supervisor and the best help I can get is  suggested I buy a new phone. What about this phone Verizon phone  it`s 3 months old and still under warranty.  I have not had a working phone since 11/27/10 there customer service stinks for a guy who spends 500.00 a month. You are not the only game in town.

Unfortunate to hear your stories re: the palm pre plus.
On the flip side, I have had my phone since Jan 2010 and have had NONE of the problems you guys have mentioned.
To be honest, do not rely on verizon tech support re: palm webOS devices, as either they werent trained by palm when the devices were released, or they didnt pay mind to learn the ins and outs of webOS devices.  you'll get better tech support from palm, or even better from fan sites such as precentral or webOSroundup.  verizon is all into android these days, so if you have an android device, you will get much better tech support from verizon.
re: backup- the webOS devices are the easiest to wipe clean, or "doctor" your phone when you want to bring the device back to its factory default, and/or sell the device.  Its also the easiest to "hack" or "homebrew" which interestingly enough, is supported by hp and palm, unlike other platforms.  "homebrewing" is as easy as installing apps on your phone.  homebrewing should also NOT void your warranty.  "Overclocking" on the other hand, while a great tool for palm devices and also as simple as installing an app, WILL void your warranty because you are now affecting the hardware of the phone directly.  Do so at your own risk, though to be honest, it makes the phone SOOOOOOO much faster its hard to be without.  To  each their own.
Re: contact backup, I would recommend that you do NOT use the default palm profile to back up my calender, contact, and other entries, until HP or PALM one day allows you to access this info in the cloud or on desktop sync software.   I would recommend instead using one of the free syngergy services such as google or yahoo, or alternatively use third party software to sync with outlook or even palm desktop.  This way, all of your contacts, calender entries, and emails will ALWAYS have a backup stored somewhere else, and can easily be synced back to your webOS devices if you ever need to "doctor" or reboot your phone from scratch.
    Hope this helps.

  • Should apple introduce a pre order service for existing customers?

    Hi
After buying a large number of apple products I as wondering if Apple should start letting us loyal customers get first option on new devices, with iPad 3 not a million miles away I don't think it's right that people can buy them and them sell them on eBay for a profit when we miss out.
New customers are always good but it's people who buy 3 or 4 producs that keep it all going

This is a pre-order to be received on or around the 10th. These orders, though, will be filled before Feb 10 orders are filled, and are therefore more likely to have enough stock to satisfy demand.

  • I have Verizon FiOS service for phone, internet and TV but I only have one TV hooked up for it for just basic cable service with no DVR and no need for widgets.  Can I use an Airport Extreme as my router and not use the FiOs router?

I want to use an Airport Extreme as my router.  I currently have a Verizon FiOS router.  I have Verizon for phone, internet and TV.  However, TV-wise, I just have a basic service for one TV with just a regular box.  No HD, no DVR.  Don't need access to a menu, widgets, on-demand.  Can I eliminate the FiOS Router and just use the Airport Extreme and still have phone and internet?

I know that it will increase my wireless coverage in my house but will it increase the speeds?
Not sure what you are asking here.  The AirPort Extreme is only going to be as fast as the Internet connection that it receives.....which is 75/75. It cannot take a 75/75 connection and make it go any faster.
If you locate the AirPort Extreme in an area where you need more wireless signal coverage, the AirPort Extreme would deliver 75/75 in that area.  But, keep in mind that the AirPort Extreme must connect to the FIOS router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
If you are asking if the AirPort Extreme can wirelessly connect to the FIOS modem router, and extend the FIOS wireless network, the AirPort Extreme would not be compatible with a FIOS product for that purpose.

  • Verizon Fios Slow internet no support from from verizon customer services

It looks like nobody seems to care bout your problem as long as they have your money.
Here I'm almost a year with verizon FIOS internet and cable.
Has not been able to enjoy for a whole month,  Been calling verizon for resolution almost every single night.   Verizon send disgrunted technician to your house that do nothing, only check cable and signal when it has been stated on their system that it has been checked at least 60 times in the last 10 month.
You request them to send somebody to check your ONT and they seems to ignore your request.
when you try to cancel they give you the run around even if you are not in a contract as ME.    I'm not in a 1 year or 2 year contract.  What I'm recieving from verizon cannot be called a service.   Why is so difficult for me to cancel this horrendous nightmare so i can go to provider who want my money.
I'm Paying for 50/20 internet speed
my download speed is 1.2 megabit to megabit on my lucky nights.      My upload speed is from 3-7 megabit never been higher than 10 megabit

  • Verizon Internet Speeds

    Dear Verizon,
My parents pay for this verizon plan for our home and wireless devices. I love verizon becuase of the products and services it provides, but I really have a few areas of confusion. First, we pay a TON of money every month for "up to 75 down/75 upload speeds". What I do not understand is why I am getting 15 down and 18 up WHEN WE SPECIFICALLY PAY TO HAVE FASTER SPEEDS. I live in an area very capable of getting those speeds, and when I go online to try to find a phone number where I can call someone to help, I literally cannot find anything but this forum.
This brings me to my second question...
If Verizon really cares about customer feedback and making sure their customers are satisfied, then how come they LITERALLY HAVE NO WAY OF CONTACTING THEM WHATSOEVER. An automated machine only includes the options that is convenient for their employees to answer (and simplistic preanswered questions/topics), so it gives them the leverage when trying to fix an easily fixable problem. If I can describe my problem in one sentence and I'm just a college student, Verizon engineers/ professionals should have the time and minimal expertise to listen to me so we can get what we pay for. Thats it, I'm not even demanding undeserved services, I WANT WHAT I PAY FOR.
And this is a company worth 303 BILLION DOLLARS. That is 45% of the United State's national deficit as of 2013 (est. 680 Billion)

Here are a couple of points for your consideration:
    1. Although this forum is monitored by Verizon administrators (or whatever you want to call them) they seldom show their faces here.   There is no form of techincal or general support offered here except that which other Verizon users (like me) offer.
    2. You will find many postings here about problems with overall Internet speeds. The bottom line is there are many causes for this; some are the fault of Verizon, and some are not.  Again, in general, if you want to measure your upload and download speed you shoudl do it from a hard-wired computer and definitely not a WiFi connected one, and you should do it when no one else in your home is using the Internet for anything.  This includes a PC running something like Carbonite or anything else doing "background" data transfers.
    3. You will also find many posting here about people having problems with or being disappointed with Verizon's customer service. As  long time Verizon customer myself I've come to the conclusion that this is just a fact of life. My sense is that, in general, people dislike telecomm companies almost as much as they dislike insurance companies.  But that's just my impression.
    4. In general I've found FIOS to be the best quality service available in the US - outside of the special fiber networks Google is installing in limited locations. Verizon service is, of course, quite expensive. So as the saying goes, "You pays your money and takes your choice." Verizon is well known for offering better deals to new customers than it offers to existing ones; again, this has simply become a fact of life.
    5. On the few occasions I've had to deal with Verizon tech support people I've always been happy with the results. It is not easy to reach them, but it is possible.  The automated phone system will ultimately get you to a live person, but it does take a while.  My best results have been finding a local tech in a truck working somewhere else in my neighborhood.
