Version control with concurrent InCopy and InDesign packages

Hi there,
If Editor A uses the "Forward for InCopy" option to create and send an InCopy package (.incp) to Editor B, and then erroneously uses the "Return for InDesign" function to create an InDesign package (.indp) before the Editor B has returned the new version of the package, can the superflous .indp file (that will never be used by anyone) be safely deleted?
The goal is to receive a new .incp file from Editor B and to treat it as the current version of the assignment, even though a .indp was accidentally created in the interim.  Can we simply delete the .indp file or are there other complications that we need to consider?
Thanks.

Excellent, thank you!  I just wanted to be certain.

  • Version Control with Clearcase

Will anybody tell me how to use clearcase for version control with Jdeveloper? I use clearcase for version control and Jdeveloper as IDE. What are the configuration changes to be made to link jdeloper IDE to clearcase repository so that I can checkout files from clear case directly to Jdev IDE and check them in directly to clear case version control repository.

    Hi Srinivas,
Integrated support for Clearcase is coming in a future version of JDeveloper.
In the meantime, you can use the checkin/checkout custom addin to drive clearcase.
Download the custom addins package from:
    http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev/info/CustomAddins.31/CustomAddinsJD31.zip
    Then have a look at
    http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev/info/CustomAddins.31/CustomAddins.html#CheckOutIn.Java
for instructions. You will need to alter CheckIn.bat to change the following line:
    put -S+_V -U %1
    to
    cleartool ci -nc -identical %1
And alter CheckOut.bat to change the following line:
    get -l -Q -S+_V %1
    to
    cleartool co -nc -reserved %1

I have a PC running Windows XP (yes an antique) with CS3 Photoshop and InDesign and lightroom 2 (yes all antiques). I have acquired a PC running Windows 7 with no programs. I also have a MacBook pro  with full CS5 suite. The programs were already loaded with I got it as a gift. Question 1. If I find serial numbers used to download programs to the old PC, can those CS3 programs be put on the newer PC. Question 2. I really want to put CS5 suite on PC machines. Is that possible? Especially since my MacBook is showing some hard drive problems.

You should be able to get the CS3 programs installed and running on the new pc since CS3 is spec-ed for Windows 7 Service Pack 1.  Downloading the programs does not require a serial number.  You can find them here:  Download CS3 products  but you will need the serial number to activate the programs.  You might be able to find that thru your Adobe account online.
You will not be able to install the CS5 Mac version on a PC and you won't be able to trade it to a PC version either due to it being an older version.  Trades are allowed only for the latest version (CS6)

  • InCopy and InDesign files viewing differently

I am currently running a project to change a magazine publisher from a Quark platform to an InDesign and InCopy workflow. One problem that keeps occuring is that when an editor manually alters the paragraph style to make the copy fit in InCopy, (ie, altering the tracking and/or leading), this change does not show when the same file is opened in InDesign.
For example, a heading that an editor has reduced tracking -5% to make fit into one line in the InCopy file, will still look like two lines when the InDesign file is opened. This is particularly dangerous for pages of text, as we keep losing lines from the bottom of the page and this can be easy to miss during output for press.
I've checked, and all staff are following workflow, and updating assignments - so it's not human error (as far as I can see).
Is this happening to anyone else? And is there a fix for it? The only one I can think of is to add more paragraph styles with different trackings etc, but this is not ideal and does not cover all the variables.
We are using CS4, and the Snow Leopard platform – Please help!

As an update to this, I have found what I believe is the cause, and, hopefully a fix, to this problem.
    The cause seems to be that in the original Quark template, the font has a horizontal scale setting of 95%. When the template is converted to InDesign, everything looks fine. However, the font doesn't seem to be recognised as a true font, and this has resulted in the word and character spacing looking completely different between InCopy and InDesign. This has been causing problems such as;
    1. Headings showing in one line in InCopy but flowing onto two lines in the InDesign file
    2. Body text showing completely different spacing throughout - causing uneven window and orphans and resulting in paragraphs being in different places in the InDesign and the InCopy files. This has made it impossible for the editors to fit copy on page.
Note that any written changes by the editor (ie, change to the words) has worked fine.
The fix seems to be to go back to the original template in Quark, and make sure all the font/text settings in the paragraph and character styles are set at 100%. Then make the template conversion again. I have run some testing this afternoon, and everything seems to be running ok now - touch wood!
Thought I'd send an update anyway in case anyone has the same problem.

I have a CC student membership for one year, but I can only download trial versions of for example illustrator and indesign (30 days). How do I solve this problem?

If there is no billing issue,
Creative Cloud applications unexpectedly revert to trial mode | CS6, CCM
If you use Photoshop at all, you may need to install the latest update to resolve this issue. See this blog post for more information:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2013/01/photoshop-13-0-413-1-2-updat es-now-available.html
If you do not have Photoshop, then try the solution that others have mentioned previously:
Open the Adobe Application Manager (AAM).
If applicable, let AAM complete any automatic updates and restart itself.
Sign in with your Adobe ID. (Optionally, you can close AAM at this point.)
    Open a CS6 application (e.g. InDesign CC).
If prompted (e.g. you get the trial screen), click "License This Software" and sign in with your Adobe ID.

    Hi,
You must suffer from buffer busy waits.
When a buffer is updated, the buffer will be latched, and other sessions can not read it or write it.
You must have multiple sessions reading and writing that one block.
Recommendation 2 results in fewer records per block, so less chance multiple sessions are modifying and reading 1 block. It will also result in a bigger table.
The recommendation doesn't make sense for tablespaces with segment storage management auto, as for those tablespaces pctfree does not apply.
Buffer busy waits will also occur if the blocksize of your database is set too high.

  • Sharepoint 2010 and InDesign Packages - HELP!

I am part of an in-house creative team and our company is implementing SharePoint to replace our local network and external resource server. While this is great for marcomm documents, excel files and product photos, it's opened up a pandoras box for InDesign packages and to a lesser extent, Illustrator files.
Before we could store worker files on the local network and when an ad was finalized post a PDF to our external resource server for publications, vendors, dealers and distributors to download. If someone wanted the worker we would zip the package and send it to them.
Now with SharePoint we will utilize "private" and "published" controls which will enable us to need only ONE document location, serving as both our local network drive AND our resource (dealers and distributors will have login access rights to anything checked "published.") This creates somewhat of a problem when making InDesign worker files accessable, as they would need the entire package - fonts, links & file - in order to download a workable file. From what I understand there is a "download dependent files" option within SP, which would make all files - links, fonts, etc - download with the selected InDesign file.
So here is the question: how do you enable people outside the company download the worker packages without:
    1) them downloading in random bits and having to explain to them how to re-assemble the document, links, etc
    2) having to duplicate files over and over again by creating seperate packages for each ad, catalog, poster, brochure, postcard, etc.
So far the SP company facilitating the design & development of our SP system has said the solution is to create a zip file with associated PDF for each creative. That seems like a total waste of space with over redundancy and is 10 times more painful than our current workflow. Add in 5-15 resizes for the same ad and you've created quite a mess.
Does anyone out there have experience with this? There must be a solution...

    Cory,
You may ask in the InDseign forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/indesign/indesign_general

  • Applescript and InDesign: Packaging/exporting -- can you help?

I found and tweaked a droplet script that isn't quite working right. I tried and failed to learn to do this myself. Any help is greatly appreciated! This is for InDesign CS6 -- you don't really need to know InDesign in order to help (at least I don't think so).
For the moment, I simply drag multiple InDesign files (for this example, "filename1.indd" and "filename2.indd") onto the droplet. InDesign packages them separately and outputs PDFs into each output folder. The problem is that it's creating too many folders and not putting things where I want.
Another thing: when InDesign packages a file, it creates a "Instructions.txt" file for each package that I need deleted. I'd really like this added to the script as well. Is it possible?
    Current output (messy!)
    Desired output (perfect!)
    "exports" folder
         "filename1" folder
              filename1.pdf
              "filename1" folder
                   filename1.indd
                   Instructions.txt
         "filename2" folder

                   Instructions.txt
baseFolder <--- directory of original files
         "filename1" folder
              filename1.indd
              "PDF" folder
                   filename1.pdf
         "filename2" folder
              filename2.indd
              "PDF" folder
                   filename2.pdf
Here's the script I have so far:
property baseFolder : (path to desktop as text) & "exports:"

do shell script "mkdir -p " & quoted form of POSIX path of macFolderPath
         return macFolderPath & ":"

  • Version Control with DB

I wonder if some version control like SourceJammer, Prowler can be used along with some relational database in Java Application.
I am looking a requirement where along some relational data, I need to store some xml data as well and plan to use LOB feature of Database as most of the database are XML enabled. But I also need to display version history of those and get appropriate version and diff between version i.e. standard version control features along with check-in, check out. Open source solution is required.
At present, it is something like
    Java Application -> O-R Mapper -> DB
    Now needed some thing like:
Java Application -> O-R Mapper (should be here or before DB?) -> Version Control -> DB
Any thoughts, pointers/directions will be useful.
    Thanks in advance.

Doyou want version control of the scripts that you use to create databases, or do you want version control of the objects in your database.
The former was descibed by another poster (i.e., wincvs). Alternatively, your data modeling tool should provide that type of service. For example, if you are using Oracle Designer then your data models can be versioned.
The latter type of versioning is supported by Oracle workspace manager and the new 10.2 releases of Oracle Content DB and Oracle Records DB. There's also versioned tablespaces in 10g.

  • Version Control with JDeveloper application using ClearCase

My team is evaluating J Developer to see if
it matchs our requirement. We want
to know how we will be able to use Clearcase
as version control tool with our Java or JSP application developed using JDeveloper.
We understand that J Developer will help us
to create a zip file for deployment. Do we need to check in/out that zip file, zip/unzip the zip file, look for the file
that we want to change, and then make change to it?
If so how Clear Case knows which files in that zip file has been changed and what changes have been made?
Currently, we use Clearcase to check in/out
every single file, one at a time. We don't know how it will work with a zip file.

  • Version Control of APEX Pages and Shared Components

    Background:
My organisation has a large customer base and over the last 2 years we have migrating from a forms to an apex user presentation layer. We have had a number of customers live on the apex front end for close to a year now.
Our current method of releasing apex objects is at the application level (ie applications are exported for version control in PVCS and then released to Test etc). We now want to investigate exporting pages and shared components individually. Hence, I have a few questions:
    1. If I export a page and this is checked into PVCS and I forget to export a 'List of Values' shared component. What happens when the page in PVCS is created in another environment (ie Test). I guess the ‘Page Import’ would still succeed but the reference to the ‘List of Values’ would be some large made up number.
How would we detect the missing dependency after import ?
    2. Regarding New or Changed Templates. Once again, if a page references a new template and is then exported, checked into PVCS and imported into test but the template is missed for migration to test, would the import succeed but the template reference would be broken, like in number 1.
    3. How can Application level objects be locked (reserved) when undergoing modification.
Any comments would be appreciated especially if there are any sites using pages and shared component exports for version control and releases.
For anyone who's interested, the method we are thinking of using is:
..Page Export script will be version controlled
..ALL the shared component export scripts will be added to 1 main SQL script
Hence we only end up with 2 configurable objects in PVCS.

    Nigel,
    1. If I export a page and this is checked into PVCS and I forget to export a 'List of Values' shared component. What happens when the page in PVCS is created in another environment (ie Test). I guess the ‘Page Import’ would still succeed but the reference to the ‘List of Values’ would be some large made up number.
For component export/import, the source and target worskpace ID and application ID must be identical. You can achieve the workspace "sameness" by exporting and importing the workspace from one database to another, thus preserving the workspace's numeric ID, aka security group ID. Similarly applications must be exported/imported/installed without changing their IDs in the installed-into instance. More fundamentally, the application you import/install components into must be an identical copy of the source application with respect to the internal object IDs, allowing only for differences that incent you to migrate changes from a higher rev level of the application into a copy that is at a lower rev level.
As to the specific question, if you copied a page but didn't copy an LOV into the target application then if the LOV referenced by the page already existed in the target application then page would simply reference the existing, perhaps down-level, LOV in the application. If the LOV did not already exist but had been newly created in the source application, then the target application page would contain an invalid reference and would produce a runtime error.
How would we detect the missing dependency after import ?
I don't know of any reports that would tell you this. There are several types of omissions that you need to watch out for, not all of which can be detected by inspection of the target application in isolation.
    2. Regarding New or Changed Templates. Once again, if a page references a new template and is then exported, checked into PVCS and imported into test but the template is missed for migration to test, would the import succeed but the template reference would be broken, like in number 1.
    Yes, same case.
    3. How can Application level objects be locked (reserved) when undergoing modification.
There is no provision for this as there is for pages.
For anyone who's interested, the method we are thinking of using is:
..Page Export script will be version controlled
..ALL the shared component export scripts will be added to 1 main SQL script
Hence we only end up with 2 configurable objects in PVCS.
So you propose to have one script of all pages and another script for everything else? I'm not sure I got that right.

  • How to implement poor-man's version control with TSQL queries

I have a table called Project. Each row completely describes a project and has a username, project name, project description and other numeric parameters that contain all the data about the project.
When multiple rows have the same username, this means a user owns multiple projects.
Now I want to implement a poor-man's version control for my users by adding a new integer column called version. When a user wants to save a new version of his project, the version is incremented and a new row is inserted into the table.
Some projects will have 1 version, others will have a dozen or more.
By default, the user should see a data grid of projects where only the latest version of the project is displayed (including the version count) and all the older versions of each project are ignored.
How do I write a TSQL query to populate this data grid (and ignore every version except the latest versions of each project)?
