1.5.0_04: Firefox yes, IE no.

An installation of jre-1_5_0_04-windows-i586-p.exe on XP SP2 is recognized by Firefox 1.0.4 but not Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2. (XP and IE are up-to-date with MS patches.) The following suggestions have proven unsuccessful so far:
In IE:
1. Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, choose "Use JRE 1.0.5_04 for <applet>" then restart IE; however, Tools, Sun Java Console still returns the message that "Sun Java is not currently selected as the default"
2. Uninstall JRE, then in Tools, Internet Options, Security, Internet Zone, Custom Level, select Prompt for "Download unsigned ActiveX controls," then reinstall JRE and reset from Prompt to Disable. (suggested by http://www.spicer.com/Product_Web/ViewCafe/VC_2D_Demo/VC_2D_Demo_FAQs.htm)
In Java Control Panel:
Advanced, Settings, <APPLET> tag support, Internet Explorer, checked and applied.
Assuming the installation executable is not corrupt, since Firefox recognizes it (about:plugins) as does Sun's test page while running Firefox, is there any IE setting, registry entry or other setting somewhere I must change? Both Sun Java versions 1.5.0_02 and 1.4.2_06 were recognized by IE.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated; I've struggled with this for days.

I think my problem was with IE6 simply not acknowledging the presence of the Sun Java Console, for some reason unknown to me, rather than its ability to run java apps, at least my "research and testing" today indicates this.
at
http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/index-1.4.html
the Applet tags demos will NOT run in IE, whereas the OBJECT and EMBED tags demos will. Not being a programmer, I'll assume this is for reasons related to html coding rather than indicating inherent problems within the java.
However...
at
http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.5.0/demos/plugin/applets.html
every demo app runs fine in IE.
The difference between Firefox and IE seems to be IE's specific lack of recognition and then launching of the console; with Firefox the "coffee cup" icon appears in the task tray and the small corner window I'm used to seeing when java apps launch pops up on my Web page identifying the correct version of Sun's Java followed by the several lines of code which I then "Clear" and "Close." No coffee cup icon & no java console with IE.
Learning, always learning; the more I learn the more I realize I don't know, as I think Albert Einstein supposedly once said.

  • Network confusion... Safari - NO CONNECTION, Firefox - YES?

For the past few days my iBook (G4) has been behaving strangely. Safari keeps saying it "can't connect to server" as if I'm offline, but if I try Firefox, everything works. This behavior occurred when I was connected wirelessly (connected to a new AEBS), so yesterday I tried a direct ethernet connection. For a while Safari loaded correctly, then the old problem returned when I tried to reconnect wirelessly.
Currently, no matter how I connect, Firefox works, and Entourage works (but will not load pictures in html emails). Safari does not, and when I try to run Software Update, it tells me to run Network Diagnostics (which in turn tells me ny network appears to be fine).
    Please HELP? Any ideas?
This morning I did an Archive and Install of my system (Mac OS 10.4.9), thinking that the most recent Security Update may have been the culprit, but the problems persist...
    iBook G4 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Safari uses System/User prefs for some things that Firefox uses it's own settings for, so we sorta know where the problem is.
Not sure this will help, but it seems it will since an Archive and Install replaces most System stuff, try trashing...
/Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences... the whole Prefs folder there.
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration... the whole SysConfig folder.
Reboot... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work.
Might also try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers:...

Problem solved by a web master at the URL.

  • QuickTime - Firefox yes - Safari no

in my 10.4.8 system, my 7.1.3 QuickTime player plays
videos when I am use my 1.5.0.8 Foxfire but not when I use
my 2.0.4 Safari (which I prefer)
    any thoughts ?

If you see a QuickTime logo over your video player and are unable to play videos, make sure QuickTime isn't your default Flash player.
    To correct your QuickTime preferences:
    1. Open QuickTime Player.
    2. Click "Edit" in the menu bar.
    3. Click "Preferences," then click "QuickTime Preferences."
    4. Click the "Browser" tab. 5. Click "MIME Settings."
    6. In the "MIME Types" box, make sure the "Miscellaneous" option is unchecked. 7. Click "OK," "Apply," and "OK."
    8. Restart your computer.
I found this advice elsewhere and it fixed my problem so I am posting it for
anyone who has a similar problem - apparently not many as I didn't get any responses

  • Not able to get the full screen in Youtube with latest firefox

    Hi All,
I was using the FF 3.0.10 came with ArchLinux pacman. Recenty I downloaded the latest FF from mozilla website and put that in /opt/firefox. I am able to do all other things in it except watching the full screen flash video from Youtube. The browser stucks when I click on the full screen option. But that is working fine in the old browser ( Gran paradiso ). I am not able to find the root cause of it. An idea ?

  • Formatted HD, but have backup of all the folders and files of Firefox. How can I restore everything, including plugins, bookmarks and saved settings?

I have formatted my computer's HD because of a problem with Windows 7, the thing is that Windows 7 didn't start, so I couldn't backup my Firefox settings, bookmarks, plugins, themes, personas and etc. the right way.
I also don't have a Firefox Sync account.
What I do have are all the folders and files of Firefox, because I just created a new partition and installed Windows 7 again, what I'm having trouble is finding a way (if there's any) to restore everything from my previous installation to the new one.
I have searched for days on both Google and on te Firefox forum with no success, the only questions I found are about restoring a profile, but what I'm trying to do is the same thing that the Firefox add-on " FEBE " does, which is restoring everything to the previous configuration.
    Here's alink to the add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/pt-br/firefox/addon/febe/
I have tried copying, pasting and overwritting from the " .default " folder to my new installation of Firefox (yes, Firefox was closed), but when I opened it again, nothing was restored.
I every single folder and file Firefox ever created on my computer, this includes the installation folder (at Program Files), the profile (.default at AppData) folder, the Mozilla folder (ProgramData) and the Mozilla Firefox folder (also at AppData).
I also had the FEBE add-on installed, but like stated before, unfortunately I couldn't start Windows 7, forcing me to create a new partition to install a new copy of the OS.
    Thanks in advance.
PS. Sorry if I made the text too long and/or if I mentioned the same things twice, just trying to be thorough.

    Hi Sdarts,
I apologize for the delay in replying to your question, and I am sorry to hear that you are having issues restoring your Firefox user data.
Please see the following article, which explains how to restore your Firefox user data using a previously backed up Profiles folder, which seems to apply to your situation:
    * [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles Backup and Restore information from Firefox Profiles]
Please let us know if this solves your problem or if you have any questions.

  • Safari and Firefox

Does anybody have both Safari and Firefox on a Mac? I like Safari but occasionally I find a service I use that does not support Safari but recommends Firefox.

Yes. There are no complications from having multiple web browsers installed.

  • Xp home and IE already installed. Added firefox and javascript dropdown menus not working at all. Help please

I installed firefox on my laptop, vista and IE installed, and as yet have no problems. I decided to install firefox on my desktop with XP home and IE installed and it has created a problem. Before installing firefox I had javascript dropdown menus on my web site which I build and upload to my isp. Now I cannot get the dropdown menus to run at all on my desktop. I tried uninstalling firefox but it still doesn't work. Help would be appreciated even to get back to how it was before installing firefox.

Yes, there is a work around by doing a forced restore to a "new iPhone", and manually synching the apps, one by one. You still can't update or delete any of them without going through this again. The only real fix will be from Apple - hopefully in 2.1 which is rumored to be released later today...
If you read though these threads, you'll find some really excellent posts that will remind you of a 5 year old when he finds out that his new Batman suit doesn't make him fly.

  • Firefox no longer plays embedded YouTube videos - message "An error occured, please try later"

I've updated FireFox, cleared cache etc., but continue to experience this issue on several different sites where I have embedded YouTube videos. This issue has only just started happening - all was well a few days ago. They play fine with Chrome and Safari and I can also play the un-embeded version on YouTube in Firefox.

Yes, unfortunately, another user reported this a few days ago on his website.
Currently the only workaround is to click the YouTube button in the player to launch the video in a new window, and then manually edit the -nocookie out of the address and press Enter to load it on the real YouTube site.
Hopefully someone at Google/YouTube will figure out why this suddenly broke and fix it.
The other thread: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1050925 youtube-nocookie domain has problems in Firefox, but not in Google Chrome]

  • Can I save my "app tabs", so they load each time I open firefox?

When i create app tabs, I want them to save and load each time I open firefox.

Yes. The apps are still not saved between sessions. I am on FF4 RC and Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

  • When importing information from my Safari 5.1.10 to Firefox 34.0.5, will the information in Safari remain in tact or be deleted from Safari?

I would like a member of my family to continue to be able to use what they are familiar with until they are comfortable using and finding items in Firefox.

Yes, the data will be left in Safari (or whatever browser you import from). Firefox simply does a read only import.
Also, make sure Firefox is updated to 35 ([[Update Firefox to the latest version]]) and show your family member [[Get started with Firefox - An overview of the main features]] to help them get started :)

  • Shockwave Flash may be busy... BLAH BLAH BLAH... HOW can I fix this?

I am SOOOOOO sick of this issue.  I have posted asking for help,  advice and etc... in many different sites including THIS ONE, and no one  seems to know how to fix this. For about the last month or so, I have  had a problem with my adobe flash, or shockwave flash or what ever the  hell you want to call it. I say this last part because I have been told  they are the same, and I have been told they are different. Here is a  screen shot of the damn pop up box I keep getting, it also shows how I  am also often told that I need to install adobe flash to view something  even though I DO have it installed already.
The  issue: It seems like every couple of mins at times, my browser will  freeze, then after a few seconds to mins, I get the above shown pop up  box about my unresponsive plugin. Usually when I click the continue  button, after a few mins the page continues to work. This usually only  lasts a few mins before it freezes again and I get the pop up box AGAIN.  Sometimes it stays unfrozen for a while, and I have no issues but this  is very rare.  Now if I click the stop plugin option, this usually makes  adobe flash crash altogether, and I have to refresh everything.  Sometimes my page does not unfreeze at all, even after clicking the  continue button, my browser does not unfreeze, and I have to open my  task manager, and shut it all down manually. As for the other issue,  where I am told I have to download adobe flash to view something, this  does not happen EVERY time I try viewing something, but it does happen, I  would say maybe 2-8 times out of 10 it happens. It has happened while  trying to view videos, commercials I get while playing games sometimes,  or many other things, I am saying this because I want to make sure you  understand it is NOT just when I am on facebook or something, I just  happened to take the screenshot above while on FB when it happened this  most recent time to make this post here with.
Ok  so I have tried a LOT of things to fix this. I more then once tried  uninstalling and then reinstalling adobe flash, I did so following the  instructions for a CLEAN INSTALL as I was directed by someone else to  try. In case the issue was something to do with my anti virus, or fire  wall or etc... I have also tried uninstalling, then reinstalling while  my windows firewall was turned OFF, as well as my anti virus turned off.  I have tried uninstalling my browsers as well, then reinstalling them  AFTER reinstalling adobe.
According  to the flash checker thing on the adobe site itself, I DO have the most  current version installed, I also checked the page to see if it was  supposed to be working properly, and according to your site it said my  adobe flash WAS working fine, the images and etc... displayed fine. All  of my browsers and etc... are also ALL up to date. I have made sure that  ALL of my adobe products are up to date, the reader, active x,  shockwave, etc...
I  have tried everything and yet I still keep getting this message box,  and often enough I get the message saying adobe needs to be installed to  view something. I had not installed anything, nor had I made any  changes to my comp or system prior to this problem starting, though if I  am not mistaken, I think I HAD just upgraded to the newest version OF  adobe at the time, this was over a month ago now...
I  also want to add, so that I don't start getting suggestions to do so...  I do not have a virus on my comp. I have checked and rechecked my  system using a few different programs like windows defender,  malwarebytes, my anti virus Avast!, Spybot Search & Destroy,  Microsoft Safety Scanner and possibly other ones as well, and none of  them have ever found any malware, adware, or viruses.
As  for my system and info: I mostly use firefox (yes most recent version),  however recently I did download and try using Google Chrome in order to  find out if this was a firefox issue or something, as someone suggested  once. I encountered the SAME pop up box, and message while using Google  Chrome, as well as while using IE, which tells me even more this is not  a "browser" problem, but more an adobe/shockwave/flash or whatever  problem. I have windows 7 home premium on my comp, it is the 64-bit  operating system.

The  site will NOT let me post in the  "flash player" forum. When I open the  list of forums to post in, I see  flash player listed, but it is grey  in color and you can not click on  it. Under the scroll box that gives  you the choices of forums to post  your question in you see this:
"Why are some locations grayed out?                                                This means that you can view content in these locations, but may not   have access to post to them. Or, the content type you've chosen is not   available there (i.e. trying to put a blog post in a project where  blogs  are turned off). Also to move content to "Your documents",  "Private  discussions" or "Your Videos" you have to be the author."
So   tell me HOW the hell am I supposed to post in that forum, when it is   not letting me?  I have had   this problem since back in April, I have tried posting to get help and   all I get is complaints I posted in the wrong place, and it is the SITE   that is not letting me post in the right place.

  • How am I supposed to get help with a browser hijacker when I cannot contact no one and every single option in the knowlege base concerning this doesn't work?

I have some spyware on my system that neither my malaware bytes, comodo antivirus, spybot search and destroy, and a few others I've tried, can detect. The piece of spyware is a browser hijacker that keeps hijacking my firefox homepage and nothing I can do will get rid of it.
the problem only happens in firefox and no other browser is affected. basically my homepage gets changed to the following:
    http://www.ggle.org.uk/index.php?hp=1&OVKWID=firefox
Yes there are numerous options about this in the support section but none of them work. I have tried everything and I do mean everything and each time I restart firefox the bloody thing comes back. I've reset the pc - works until you close down the browser and restart it. I've gone into my profiles, i.e. user/AppData/Mozilla/firefox and deleted the .js files, parent.lock files - comes back on firefox restart. I've searched the registry the best I can. I have even put an entry into the Hosts file in syst32 and that has afforded me partial success in that I now get a 404 instead of the pesky and irritating jaamla search page. I have even gone into the About:config settings and wiped the url but no matter what I do it always comes back on restart and it's only with firefox.
This is something that firefox needs to look into and not assume that just because there are a few answers in the support section that they all work, because all of the options appear to work until firefox is restarted.
It even comes back after a complete uninstall and wipe - I am at a loss at what to do and where to go next. Please help!

I think the next step is to use Windows 7's auditing feature to figure out what processes are touching the file other than firefox.exe.
This is somewhat arduous to set up, but here's what I did. I have Win 7 Pro and I don't know whether this works on other versions.
    (1) Open the Event Viewer to the Security log
Start menu > Control Panel > System and Security category > Administrative Tools
This should launch a folder of shortcuts. Double-click Event Viewer. If Windows objects, you may need to right-click> Run as Administrator.
In the left pane of the Event Viewer, click Security.
    (2) Enable object auditing
In the Administrative Tools folder, double-click Local Security Policy (or right-click > Run as Administrator).
In the left pane, expand Local Policies and click Audit Policy.
In the right pane, double-click Audit object access and turn on both success and failure and OK the change. (screen shot attached)
    (3) Enable auditing on prefs.js
Right-click your prefs.js file > Properties, click the Security tab, then the Advanced button. In the Advanced Security Settings dialog, click the Audit tab, then the Continue button. (screen shot attached)
Click the Add button and type Everyone, then click Check Names. After you click OK, you should get a dialog with numerous checkboxes. Clicking the Full Control box for each column should select everything. Then OK that. (screen shot attached)
    (4) Test
Change a preference in Firefox that updates prefs.js (for example, you can change your home page). Then when you switch over to the Event Viewer, you can click Refresh on the right side (or choose a different category such as Application and then Security again to refresh the list), and you should find a listing in the File System task category for "a handle to the object was requested" for prefs.js, showing firefox.exe to be the active process. (screen shot attached)
    (5) Assuming the test works, exit Firefox and watch for any other process touching the file.
When you're through, you probably want to turn this all off again, since it does use cycles in the background.
